Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is an advanced, highly developed optical wireless communication (OWC) technology that can simultaneously provide lighting and high-speed wireless data transmission. A VLC system has several key advantages: ultra-high data rate, secure communication channels, and a lack of interference from electromagnetic (EM) waves, which enable a wide range of applications. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been considered the optimal choice for VLC systems since they can provide excellent illumination performance. However, the quantum confinement Stark effect (QCSE), crystal orientation, carrier lifetime, and recombination factor will influence the modulation bandwidth, and the transmission performance is severely limited. To solve the insufficient modulation bandwidth, micro-LEDs (μ-LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) are considered as new ideal light sources. Additionally, the development of modulation technology has dramatically increased the transmission capacity of the system. The performance of the VLC system is briefly discussed in this review article, as well as some of its prospective applications in the realms of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT), vehicle communications, and underwater wireless network applications.

Abstract:Visible light communication based on LEDs has been of great interest in recent years, due to its advantages such as license free, human‐eye comfortability, confidentiality, immunity to electromagnetic interference, etc. To further develop LED visible light communication, researchers need to understand each component of visible light communication systems, including devices, circuits, and modulation technologies. Specifically, to increase the transmission speed and transmission distance of VLC systems, the transmitter, receiver, and communication algorithms of the system play significant roles and should be improved in the correct direction. This article aims to briefly introduce principles, progress, and perspectives of the devices, circuits, and modulation technologies, which help to provide some opinions of development direction for future LED‐based visible light communication.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:Continuous advancements in visible-light communication(VLC)technology have paved the way for future high-capacity communication links that can simultaneously provide data transmission and illumination.VLC is being accepted as a potential complementary technology in 5G networks,and standardization efforts through IEEE 802.15.7 are on their way.Today,vehicular networking applications have become increasingly complex with tight power and performance requirements.Consequently,devices and systems that can meet diverse vehicular networking applications are in great demand.In this article,we discuss three alternatives for vehicular networking applications in(1)LED-photodiode-based active VLC,(2)VLC with a multicamera array receiver,and(3)passive VLC based on decoding information from optical backscatter.We also present our recent experimental and modeling work using our camera-based and passive VLC prototype implementations.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) based on LEDs has been a hot topic investigated for over a decade. However, most of the research efforts assume the intensity of LED light is constant. This hypothesis is not true when Smart Lighting is introduced to VLC, which requires LEDs to adapt their brightness based on the intensity of natural ambient light. Smart lighting saves power consumption and improves user comfort. However, intensity adaptation severely affects the throughput performance of data communication. In this paper, we propose SmartVLC, a system that can maximize the throughput (benefit communication) while still maintaining the LEDs' illumination function (benefit smart lighting). A novel Adaptive Multiple Pulse Position Modulation (AMPPM) scheme is proposed to support fine-grained dimming levels to avoid flickering while maximizing the throughput under each dimming level. SmartVLC is implemented on off-the-shelf commodity hardware. Several real-life challenges in both hardware and software are addressed to make it a robust real-time system. Comprehensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the system performance under multifaceted scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that SmartVLC supports a communication distance up to 3.6m, and improves the throughput achieved with two state-of-the-art approaches by 40 and 12 percent on average, respectively, without bringing any flickering to users.

Abstract:We introduce three formats, based on advanced modulation, that improve transmission. These formats are quasi-balanced detection orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing(OFDM), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation, and single carrier-frequency domain equalization(SC-FDE). We determine the feasibility of these schemes for improving transmission in a VLC system. We analyze the principles of these three modulation formants and provide experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2×2 MIMO real-time VLC system based on 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation. The system was achieved by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and silicon substrate LEDs. The effect of attenuation of the attenuator in transmitter and receiver, the aperture diameter of the received signal, code rate and different modulation order have been investigated in our experiment. The experimental results show that our real-time VLC system can transmit over 2m distance for an overall 5Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), as an interdisciplinary paradigm, spans various technologies from basic device sciences to system engineering. Micro-size light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs), because of their excellent spatio-temporal capability, are promising candidates for use as transmitters in versatile high-capacity VLC systems. Novel luminous material, fabrication process, and optical structure were successively employed for further increasing the electrical-to-optical (E-O) bandwidth of these micro-LED devices. In addition, multi-color and multi-structured micro-LEDs are enabling multi-modal and heterogeneous VLC systems with clear advantages over previously-studied point-to-point architectures. Herein, we discuss solutions for >1-GHz micro-LEDs. With the deployment of the next-generation VLC system in mind, we then provide perspectives into how micro-LEDs can assist the VLC evolution beyond the fifth-generation/sixth-generation (B5G/6G) era.

Abstract:Due to spectrum shortage, visible light communication (VLC) has gradually been regarded as an important alternative and reinforcement in wireless communication field. Micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) are ideal high-speed light sources for VLC due to its significantly improved modulation bandwidth. In this review, the developments of high-speed micro-LEDs in VLC are discussed. While expounding the unique advantages of micro-LED, we also point out the existing problems and challenges. On this basis, we review the outstanding achievements in bandwidth improvement, and also look forward to some promising directions for future research.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), primarily based on light emitting diode (LED), supports the information transmission and networking through the existing infrastructure of the illumination network.The constellation optimization and the power resource optimization were investigated under lighting constraints with multiple LEDs for indoor environment.Moreover, the optical intelligent reflection surface was also researched to regulate reflection channels dynamically, improving both the transmission data rate and the coverage of the VLC system.In the meantime, the preliminary study revealed the flicker effect of low-frequency modulated optical signals on the human body, and the results suggest that the LED photo-biological effect should be considered comprehensively in the future signal design.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) systems leverage solid-state illumination devices to create high-speed communication links. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been considered for these intensity-modulated/direct-detection (IM/DD) optical channels, however, it suffers from high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Moreover, the implementation of linear, power-efficient, high-current, wideband drivers is challenging. In this paper, the concept of spatial summing is developed where wideband, high PAPR OFDM signals are partitioned into many low-PAPR narrowband signals that are transmitted from multiple LEDs. The signals from different LEDs are allowed to sum in space before being detected by a conventional OFDM receiver. Spatial optical-OFDM (SO-OFDM) is proposed in which filtered subsets of carriers are emitted by each LED. In addition, low-PAPR optical single-carrier FDMA (OSC-FDMA) is developed where different collections of LEDs act as virtual users in a multiple-access scheme. The different variations of SO-OFDM and OSC-FDMA are compared to conventional DC-biased optical (DCO) OFDM and are shown to achieve lower PAPR and more robustness to LED nonlinearities leading to error rate performance gains at high signal-to-noise ratios.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a current technology which allows data to be transmitted by modulating information onto a light source. It has many advantages over traditional radio frequency communication and up to 10,000 times larger bandwidth. Existing research in visible light communication assumes a synchronised channel, however, this is not always easily achieved. In this paper, a novel synchronised intra and inter-vehicle VLC system is proposed to ensure reliable communication in both inter and intra-vehicle communication for Infotainment Systems (IS). The protocol achieves synchronisation at the symbol level using the transistor-transistor logic protocol and achieves frame synchronisations with markers. Consequently, the deployment of the protocol in both inter and intra-vehicle communication presents numerous advantages over existing data transmission processes. A practical application, where VLC is used for media streaming is also previewed. In addition, various regions of possible data transmission are determined with the intention to infer forward error correction schemes to ensure reliable communication.

Abstract:As wireless communication rapidly evolves and the demand for intelligent connectivity grows, the need for precise sensing integrated with efficient communication becomes paramount. While traditional Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) methods have laid foundational groundwork, they grapple with environmental limitations and significant propagation losses. Visible Light Communication (VLC) emerges as a trans formative solution characterized by its high-speed transmission, minimal latency, cost-efficiency, and seamless installation. This paper introduces the Lighting, Sensing, and Communication (LiSAC) concept for VLC and systematically reviews the technical aspects, such as channel characteristics, modulation techniques, and system design. Specifically, this paper presents the evolution of the LiSAC system, its integration with other communication technologies, its applications in various fields, and its challenges. At the end of this paper, we outlooked LiSAC in the future, in which high-quality communication will integrate pinpoint sensing accuracy.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has gained great interest in the last decade due to the rapid developments in Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) fabrication. Efficiency, durability and long life span of LEDs make them a promising residential lighting equipment as well as an alternative cheap and fast data transfer equipment. Appliance of visual light in data communication by means of LEDs has been densely searched in academia. In this paper, we explore the fundamentals and challenges of indoor VLC systems. Basics of optical transmission such as transmitter, receiver, and links are investigated.
