Abstract:We introduce three formats, based on advanced modulation, that improve transmission. These formats are quasi-balanced detection orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing(OFDM), carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation, and single carrier-frequency domain equalization(SC-FDE). We determine the feasibility of these schemes for improving transmission in a VLC system. We analyze the principles of these three modulation formants and provide experimental results.

Abstract:In the nearest decades, the rapidly increasing demand of wireless connectivity has resulted in the ubiquitous deployment of wireless systems as well as heavily congested wireless spectrum. Owing to the various inherent advantages, such as spectral and bandwidth relief, no healthy concern, high security, low cost, and low interference with Radio Frequency (RF) waves, visible light communication (VLC) has been an emerging optical wireless data transmission approach that can act as a good complement to and substitute for Radio Frequency. How to achieve a high-speed data transmission is a key problem to be solved in the VLC system. This review mainly focuses on the enabling technologies for high-speed VLC systems, including novel transmitter architectures, blue filters and advanced modulation, and equalization technologies. And the inherent advantages, potential applications, and some issues of VLC that need further study are presented as well. Finally, a comprehensive survey on the recent developments and the key contributions by research groups involved in the field of high-speed VLC is provided.

In this paper, we summarize the latest progress on high-speed PAM-VLC systems including phase shifted Manchester coding, Nyquist filter, weighted pre-equalization, multi-band access, and hybrid time-frequency domain equalization, which supporting VLC high data-rate and high spectral efficiency over indoor free-space transmission.

Abstract:We are seeing a growing use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) in a range of applications including lighting, TV and backlight board screen, display etc. In comparison with the traditional incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, LEDs offer long life-space, much higher energy efficiency, high performance cost ratio and above all very fast switching capability. LED based Visible Light Communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Depending on the transmission distance, we can divide the whole optical network into two categories, long haul and short haul. Visible light communication can be a promising candidate for short haul applications. In this paper, we outline the configuration of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions consisting of advanced modulation formats including adaptive bit loading OFDM, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP), pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and single carrier Nyquist, linear equalization and nonlinear distortion mitigation based on machine learning, quasi-balanced coding and phase-shifted Manchester coding. These enabling technologies can support VLC up to 10Gb/s class free space transmission.

Abstract:Visible light communication(VLC)has gradually become a research hotspot in satellite communication owing to its significant advantages.For example,VLC provides rich and unlicensed spectrum resources,high transmission rates,strong security,and resistance to electromagnetic interference.Laser VLC devices exhibit high emission power,strong resistance to radiation,and a narrow laser beam divergence angle and are expected to be used in high-capacity long-distance satellite communication link transmissions.In this study,we implement an integrated 40-channel wavelength division multiplexing(WDM)laser VLC system,utilizing 29 visible light wavelengths.The system employs discrete multi-tone(DMT)bit loading modulation and the Levin-Campello(LC)algorithm,achieving a total transmission data rate of 418.3 Gbit/s.To the best of our knowledge,this represents the highest data rate achieved in laser VLC using WDM to date.To address the issues of bandwidth limitation and high-frequency fading in laser VLC systems,this system employs digital pre-equalization technology.Based on the signal characteristics of the system,a corresponding Zobel network is designed to enhance and reduce the energy of high-frequency and low-frequency signals,respectively,thereby improving the overall communication performance.The experimental results reveal that digital pre-equalization significantly enhances the laser VLC performance.This system demonstrates the significant potential of laser VLC in high-capacity satellite communication.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) technology is one of the key technologies for future mobile communications. The current research on VLC mainly focuses on indoor communications. Little research of VLC was conducted in outdoor high-speed mobile scenario. This paper establishes a high-speed mobile VLC model for high-speed train communications, where a single-input single-output (SISO) system and a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system are considered. We explore the impact of the Doppler effect on this high-speed mobile VLC model and apply adaptive modulation to achieve the maximum spectral efficiency under the required bit-error-rate (BER) and optical power constraint. In the MIMO VLC system, singular value decomposition (SVD) based adaptive modulation and zero-forcing (ZF) based adaptive modulation schemes are investigated. Simulation results are provided to verify the performance of different schemes.

Abstract:High-speed light emitting diode (LED) based visible light communication (VLC) system is restricted by the limited LED bandwidth, low detector sensitivity, and linear and nonlinear distortions. Thus, single-and two-cascaded constant-resistance symmetrical bridged-T amplitude hardware pre-equalizers, carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation, and a three-stage hybrid postequalizer are investigated to increase transmission data rate for a high-speed LED-based VLC system. The schemes utilized by the hybrid postequalizer aremodified cascaded multimodulus algorithm, Volterra series based nonlinear compensation algorithm and decision-directed least mean square algorithm. With these technologies, we successfully implement high-speed CAP32, CAP64, and CAP128 VLC experimental system over 1-m free space transmission with bit error rate under the hard decision-forward error correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). System performance improvement employing these key technologies is also validated through experimental demonstration. With the superposition of each stage of the hybrid postequalizer, system performance will be improved. And utilizing two-cascaded hardware pre-equalizer will provide more accurate channel compensation than a single pre-equalizer.

Abstract:We have proposed a new scheme to reduce the common-mode noise in the visible light communication system. We implemented the simulation based on the new PAM-OFDM structure through MATLAB and tested the performance of VLC channel according to several different specific schemes. Our simulation results validate the high performance of the new scheme for reducing common-mode noise in the VLC system.

Abstract:A major limitation of existing visible light communication (VLC) systems is the limited modulation bandwidth of light-emitting diodes used in such systems. Using adaptive modulation to improve the spectral efficiency for radio communications has been well studied. For VLC with various physical layer schemes, however, how adaptive modulation works is not well understood yet. The goal of this paper is to provide an in-depth analysis of the achievable spectral efficiency of adaptive modulation for three different schemes for high speed VLC: dc-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM), asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM), and single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). We will show that in the low signal-to-noise ratio region, the ACO-OFDM-based adaptive modulation scheme outperforms the other two schemes. SC-FDE-based adaptive modulation achieves a better performance than the DCO-OFDM-based scheme, and it is much simpler than the other two schemes.

Abstract:LED replacing fluorescent and incandescent lamps for lighting has become an obvious trend.The feature that LED can be used for both illumination and communications makes visible-light communication(VLC) become a hot point in recent years.With the rapid popularization of computers and smart devices,the bandwidth and coverage of access networks need further improvement.VLC technology is a promising communication technology for high speed data transmission to break through the bottlenecks.A main challenge of this technology is the limited modulation bandwidth of white LED.Researchers have proposed a variety of techniques,such as equalization technology,blue filtering,high-order modulation formats,discrete multi-tone(DMT) modulation,wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technology,and multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) technology,to extend bandwidth and increase transmission speed.The principles and performances of those techniques are analyzed and discussed to provide a reference for future researches.

Abstract:Due to spectrum shortage, visible light communication (VLC) has gradually been regarded as an important alternative and reinforcement in wireless communication field. Micro-light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) are ideal high-speed light sources for VLC due to its significantly improved modulation bandwidth. In this review, the developments of high-speed micro-LEDs in VLC are discussed. While expounding the unique advantages of micro-LED, we also point out the existing problems and challenges. On this basis, we review the outstanding achievements in bandwidth improvement, and also look forward to some promising directions for future research.

Abstract:We summarize the latest research progresses applying machine learning in VLC systems. 2.7Gbit/s CAP64 VLC transmission based on a high-power 1-Watt phosphorescent white LED over 1.2m-free-space is demonstrated. As far as we know, this is the highest data rate using a high-power phosphorescent white LED.

Abstract:In recent years, high-speed visible light communications (VLC) have been identified as an essential part of communication technologies for next generation wireless network owing to the increasing demand for faster data transmission speeds. VLC offers the unique advantages of ultra-high data rate, unregulated and secure channels, free of EM interference. Compared with the LED-based VLC system, laser-based photonic systems are promising for compact, droop-free, and high-speed white lighting and VLC applications, making them ideal alternatives for building ultra-fast optical wireless data link. Besides the potential for achieving high data rate free-space communication links, i.e., the Li-Fi network, laser based VLC, or visible laser light communication (VLLC) technology can also enable underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC) for many important applications. This paper summarizes the recent progress in high-speed laser based VLC devices and explore VLLC-enabled networks, systems, and applications. I will describe state-of-the-art VLC transmitter and receiver technologies. Novel designs to overcome the inherent limitations will be covered. Finally, the innovations in VLC systems for industrial IoT, vehicular communication, and underwater wireless networks applications will be discussed.
Hybrid Multi- And Single-Carrier Modulation Approach For Visible Light Communication

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), as a promising alternative to the next generation wireless communication technologies, has drawn extensive research interests. In this paper, a novel hybrid intensity modulated direct detection (IM/DD) communication system is proposed, which integrates the multi-carrier and single-carrier modulation to enhance spectrum efficiency and support different qualities of services (QoS). In the proposed method, the negative hybrid asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NHACO-OFDM) is proposed based on the conventional HACO-OFDM scheme, and then HACO-OFDM and NHACO-OFDM signal are combined with on-off keying (OOK) for simultaneous transmission. Simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid transmitted signals can be recovered completely at the receiver with higher spectrum efficiency, meanwhile the proposed system can support multi-service requirements and adapt to the different receivers with various complexities.

Abstract:Speed is an important indicator of a communication system, and providing high-speed wireless access is also a significant advantage of visible light communication. At present, the transmission rate of Wi-fi is about 100 Mbit/s, and the power line communication is basically at this rate and even lower. Compared with traditional wireless access technology, visible light communication can realize more high-speed wireless access due to its potentially huge bandwidth.

Abstract:Next-generation visible light communication (VLC) is envisioned to evolve into a high-speed and multi-user system. In this work, a 75-µm single layer quantum dot (QD) micro-LED was fabricated, packaged and used to experimentally demonstrate a 3-meter QAM-OFDMA VLC system affording multiple users with a 1.06-GHz modulation bandwidth. The OFDMA system realized data rates of 1.2 Gbps and 750 Mbps with a BER of 0 and 3.6×10−3 for two independent users with a 1:1 bandwidth ratio, respectively. Additional sub-carrier allocation strategies and scenarios of 2∼6 users have been further evaluated, and all proposed strategies reach the sum-rate of beyond 1.41 Gbps while satisfying the forward error correction (FEC) criteria.

Abstract:In this paper, recent advances in underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) are reviewed for both LED- and LD-based systems, mainly from a perspective of advanced modulation formats. Volterra series-based nonlinear equalizers, which can effectively counteract the nonlinear impairments induced by the UWOC system components, are discussed and experimentally demonstrated. Both the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed Volterra nonlinear equalizer in UWOC systems under different water turbidities are validated. To further approach the Shannon capacity limit of the UWOC system, the probabilistic constellation shaping technique is introduced, which can overcome the inherent gap between a conventional regular quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format and the Shannon capacity of the channel. The experimental results have shown a significant system capacity improvement compared to the cases using a regular QAM.
