Abstract:In this study, we designed and fabricated a cable accommodating 4-core and 7-core multicore fibers (MCFs). Fiber characteristics including attenuation, dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) during the cabling procedure were measured and analyzed. We observed a significant degradation in PMD for MCFs, particularly for those outer cores proximate to the cladding. Thus it requires longer taps of MIMO equalizers to sufficiently equalize at the receiver for reliable communications at the subsea distance. To assess the PMD impact on outage performance with limitations of MIMO equalizers’ taps, we developed a C-band 8000-km submarine transmission model which was calibrated with measured parameters during cabling, for qualifying 4- and 7-core MCFs in practical use. Simulations performed on the calibrated model could predict the outage performance for ensuring the communication reliability. More than 2-dB SNR margin is required to prevent the PMD-induced outage with using 300-taps MIMO equalizer at the receiver. Based on these comprehensive tests and simulations, we emphasize the importance of carefully managing PMD and ensuring adequate system SNR margins during the practical cabling and deployment of optical MCFs submarine cables.

Abstract:Summary form only given. The maximum reach of ultra-longhaul on-off keying transmission systems is mainly limited by the three length dependent parameters: CSNR degradation, nonlinear (NL) signal distortion, and fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) (in the case of 40 Gb/s per channel systems). The penalty arising from nonlinear effects depends strongly on the link design, while the penalty caused by PMD is related (in the case of linear signal propagation), to the intrinsic fiber PMD and the specific signal modulation format. It is the goal of system engineering to allocate adequate margin for each penalty source such that the system range is maximized under the constraint that the total penalty is covered by the link budget. Here we show for the first time that under certain circumstances the total penalty from nonlinear effects and PMD can be less than the sum of the two individual penalties. Indeed, we demonstrate that a PMD pre-distorted signal suffers less nonlinear signal perturbations. Ultra-longhaul 40 Gb/s systems (per channel) will need PMD compensation even when running over low PMD fiber. Thus, a post compensation of the pre-PMD distortion requires no significant add-ons in the system architecture.

Abstract:With the extension of the spectral exploitation of optical fibers beyond the C-band, accurate modeling and simulation of nonlinear interference (NLI) generation is of the utmost performance. Models and numerical simulation tools rely on the widely used Manakov equation (ME): however, this approach when considering also the effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is formally valid only over a narrow optical bandwidth. In order to analyze the range of validity of the ME and its applicability to future wide-band systems, we present numerical simulations, showing the interplay between NLI generation and PMD over long dispersion-uncompensated optical links, using coherent polarization division multiplexing (PDM) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Using a Monte-Carlo analysis of different PMD realizations based on the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, we show that PMD has a negligible effect on NLI generation, independently from the total system bandwidth. Based on this, we give strong numerical evidence that the ME can be safely used to estimate NLI generation well beyond its bandwidth of validity that is limited to the PMD coherence bandwidth.

Abstract:Using the degree of polarization as feedback signal to detect the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) variation in the fiber links, an experiment of dynamic adaptive PMD compensation in 4×10 Gb/s optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) transmission system is reported. The PMD compensator consists of polarization controller and variable delay line with four degrees of freedom. Based on the variable step-size peak search algorithm, the performance of the PMD compensator is assessed in the eye pattern of a received signal. It is shown that the maximum compensated DGD is 25 ps, i.e. one bit period, and the compensation time can be less than 50 ms.

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate 10 GBaud intensity modulation direct detection pulse amplitude modulation 4 transmission over 48-km single mode fiber (SMF). Look-up table predistortion and chromatic dispersion precompensation are employed to mitigate channel bandwidth constraint and nonlinear impairment. At the receiver side, decision-directed least mean square and cascaded multimodule algorithm are employed to improve the decision precision. By combining these techniques, link budgets of 5.3 and 4 dB are achieved at bit error rate of 1 × 10−3 for the back-to-back case and after transmission over 48-km SMF, respectively.

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in long distance fiber-optic link imposes a fundamental limitation to the capacity of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. Solving the inverse-propagating nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is in principle a fundamental methodology to mitigate fiber nonlinear impairments. However, solving multi-channel coupled NLSE is too complexed to be implemented commercially. It is of great importance to compensate for nonlinear distortions in high baud-rate WDM systems based on the information of one single target channel. In this article, we experimentally study fiber nonlinearity mitigation in an 8 × 512 Gb/s (64Gbaud) polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) Nyquist-WDM system with 960 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) loop transmission. The digital back-propagation (DBP) algorithm based on the target channel is applied, which can compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity. The inter-channel nonlinearity of cross phase modulation (XPM) induces nonlinear polarization scattering and nonlinear phase noise, which are partially correlated over adjacent pulses in high baud-rate systems. We propose an advanced nonlinear polarization crosstalk canceller (NPCC) with a novel decision feedback (DF) update strategy that is called the DF-NPCC, which incorporates the iterative process of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm and can thus mitigate the correlated nonlinear polarization crosstalk and nonlinear phase noise. Through nonlinearity mitigation, the DBP together with the DF-NPCC can achieve a 0.77 dB Q 2 factor promotion. The DF-NPCC can suppress the remaining nonlinear distortions after the single channel DBP, which corresponds to a 0.36 dB Q 2 factor improvement due to inter-channel nonlinear mitigation. Our work indicates XPM distortions can be mitigated with low complexity digital signal processing such as the DF-NPCC based on the single channel information, which provides an attractive solution to compensate inter-channel fiber nonlinearity in high baud-rate Nyquist-WDM systems.

Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion is becoming major system impairment in high speed and long distance optical fiber transmission systems. As the bit rate climbs from 10 to 40 Gb/s per wavelength division multiplexed channel and beyond, optical pulses are increasingly distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect. We report on polarization mode dispersion compensation experiments in 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s optical communication systems. The polarization mode dispersion compensator used in the experiments is a compact variable differential group delay element base on concatenation via six magneto-optic polarization rotators (Faraday rotators) of six YVO4 birefringence crystals whose lengths decrease in a binary power series. Feedback scheme is used to optimize the performance of polarization mode dispersion compensation, using degree of polarization as the feedback signal. In the experiments in 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s optical transmission systems, eye-diagrams and bit error rate curves of the code sequences before and after polarization mode dispersion compensation are analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that the polarization mode dispersion effect induced by the polarization mode dispersion emulator is feasibly mitigated. Separate experiment to reshape the 39 ps-pulses distorted by polarization mode dispersion is also carried out. The incident optical pulses with width of 39ps are broadened and distorted by polarization mode dispersion effect and then reshaped by the polarization mode dispersion compensator. The relationship between the feedback signal degree of polarization and differential group delay is also analyzed.

Abstract:We investigate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) impairments in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) signals with optical polarization demultiplexing and direct detection. We find that the time alignment between the bits in the two polarizations has a significant impact on the PMD impairments, and PMD impairments also depend on the bandwidth of PDM signals, whereas PDL impairments have little dependence on the relative time alignment between the two polarizations and the signal bandwidth. We show that with a proper configuration of the polarization demultiplexing, the PDL-induced crosstalk between the two polarizations can be completely eliminated. The combined effects of PMD and PDL are also studied, and we find that, in the presence of concatenated PMD and PDL, the impairment from one effect does not enhance that from the other. Abstract:Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is becoming major system impairment in high speed and long distance optical fiber transmission systems. As the bit rate climbs from 10 to 40Gb/s per channel and beyond, optical pulses are increasingly distorted by 1(st) and higher order PMD. We report on the experimental mitigation of pulse distortion due to 1(st) and higher order PMD effect based on one tunable differential group delay (DGD) element, which is a compact concatenation via six magneto-optic polarization rotators (Faraday rotators) of six YVO4 birefringence crystals whose lengths decrease in a binary power series. Two different experiments are carried out, with and without an electric polarization controller set before the tunable DGD element. Optical pulses with width of 41ps are broadened and distorted by the PMD emulator which generates 1(st) and 2(nd) order PMD with mean magnitude of 30.28 ps and 483.31 ps(2), respectively, and then reshaped by the compensation device. Degree of polarization (DOP) is used as the feedback signal, which is significantly increased from around 0.15 to around 0.85. The experiment results show that pulse distortion due to 1(st) and higher order PMD is successfully mitigated.

Abstract:>Polarization dependent loss (PDL) has been recognized as a critical issue because various inline optical components may have nonnegligible PDL effect that interacts with polarization mode dispersion (PMD). We investigated the impact of PMD-PDL interaction on degree of polarization (DOP), which is the most commonly used feedback signal in PMD compensation. The simulation results of a 40-Gb/s NRZ code optical transmission system show that the maximum PMD increases from approximately 40 ps to more than 45 ps, while minimum DOP declines from approximately 0.6 to approximately 0.2. The interaction of PMD and PDL also induces residual PMD underestimation of 5-8 ps, which causes degradation of PMD compensation performance.

Abstract:A 40-Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) return-to-zero (RZ) transmission experiments in cluding a dynamic polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation was reported. The dynamic PMD compensator is made up of two-stage four degrees of freedom (DOF). The first stage adopts polarization controller and fixed time-delayed line. The second stage is variable differential group delay (DGD) element. The PMD monitoring technique is based on degree of polarization (DOP) as error signal. A novel practical adaptive optimization algorithm was introduced in dynamic adaptive PMD compensation. The experimental results show that the performance of the PMD compensator is excellent for 40-Gb/s RZ transmission systems with the large DGD. With this compensator, a significant improvement of system performance can be achieved in the eye pattern of a received signal. The first-order compensating ability of the compensator is greater than 30 ps. The second-order compensating ability is greater than 200 ps2.The first-order optimum compensating time is within 10 ms. The second-order optimum compensating time is within 24 ms.
