Abstract:Summary form only given. The maximum reach of ultra-longhaul on-off keying transmission systems is mainly limited by the three length dependent parameters: CSNR degradation, nonlinear (NL) signal distortion, and fiber polarization mode dispersion (PMD) (in the case of 40 Gb/s per channel systems). The penalty arising from nonlinear effects depends strongly on the link design, while the penalty caused by PMD is related (in the case of linear signal propagation), to the intrinsic fiber PMD and the specific signal modulation format. It is the goal of system engineering to allocate adequate margin for each penalty source such that the system range is maximized under the constraint that the total penalty is covered by the link budget. Here we show for the first time that under certain circumstances the total penalty from nonlinear effects and PMD can be less than the sum of the two individual penalties. Indeed, we demonstrate that a PMD pre-distorted signal suffers less nonlinear signal perturbations. Ultra-longhaul 40 Gb/s systems (per channel) will need PMD compensation even when running over low PMD fiber. Thus, a post compensation of the pre-PMD distortion requires no significant add-ons in the system architecture.

Abstract:In this study, we designed and fabricated a cable accommodating 4-core and 7-core multicore fibers (MCFs). Fiber characteristics including attenuation, dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) during the cabling procedure were measured and analyzed. We observed a significant degradation in PMD for MCFs, particularly for those outer cores proximate to the cladding. Thus it requires longer taps of MIMO equalizers to sufficiently equalize at the receiver for reliable communications at the subsea distance. To assess the PMD impact on outage performance with limitations of MIMO equalizers’ taps, we developed a C-band 8000-km submarine transmission model which was calibrated with measured parameters during cabling, for qualifying 4- and 7-core MCFs in practical use. Simulations performed on the calibrated model could predict the outage performance for ensuring the communication reliability. More than 2-dB SNR margin is required to prevent the PMD-induced outage with using 300-taps MIMO equalizer at the receiver. Based on these comprehensive tests and simulations, we emphasize the importance of carefully managing PMD and ensuring adequate system SNR margins during the practical cabling and deployment of optical MCFs submarine cables.

Abstract:Intra-channel nonlinear effects impose a major limitation to system performance in high speed optical transmission.These effects,which are usually referred to intra-channel four-wave mixing(IFWM) and cross-phase modulation(IXPM),may cause amplitude and timing jitter and lead to serious transmission penalties.The paper discussed causes and several factors of intra-channel pulse interaction.Analysis and numerical simulation derive conclusions as follows:To suppress intra-channel nonlinear effects,phase modulation is superior to amplitude modulation,and post-compensation of dispersion is superior to pre-compensation,especially for large launched power.In addition,the duty cycle of pulse has an optimum value for a certain launched power.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring technique that is insensitive to chromatic dispersion (CD) utilizing a polarizer and a low-speed detector for an 80-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying (pol-muxed RZ-DPSK) data channel. Measured RF power increment of 16.2 dB, which is insensitive to 0 approximately 100 ps/nm CD, is measured in the presence of the increasing differential group delay (DGD) from 0 to 12 ps. High-speed components are not required for monitoring the PMD on the pol-muxed data channel, which means that the proposed technique is potentially applicable to the higher speed pol-muxed data channels.

Abstract:We investigate polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) impairments in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) signals with optical polarization demultiplexing and direct detection. We find that the time alignment between the bits in the two polarizations has a significant impact on the PMD impairments, and PMD impairments also depend on the bandwidth of PDM signals, whereas PDL impairments have little dependence on the relative time alignment between the two polarizations and the signal bandwidth. We show that with a proper configuration of the polarization demultiplexing, the PDL-induced crosstalk between the two polarizations can be completely eliminated. The combined effects of PMD and PDL are also studied, and we find that, in the presence of concatenated PMD and PDL, the impairment from one effect does not enhance that from the other. Abstract:With the increasing signal rates of a long-haul backbone dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) transmission system, e.g., from 100 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s and even to 800 Gb/s, optical path impairments simultaneously become more severe. Harmful factors being formerly insignificant become noticeable, e.g., nonlinear phase noise (NPN) on main DWDM channels induced by the cross-phase modulation (XPM) from the low-speed optical supervisory channel (OSC). Field trials show that a greater than 5.13-dB penalty can be observed on the shortest channel of 400G DP-16QAM-PCS over G.654.E links, which greatly degrades the overall transmission performance and limits the maximum reach. In this paper, we propose a dual-OSC structure with opposite signals to compensate for performance degradation caused by OSC-induced NPN. This method involves no extra digital signal processing (DSP), which is not only simple but also applicable for universal signal rates. By experimental demonstration, a 1.32-dB gain in Q (dB) for 200G DP-16QAM transmission over 1618-km G.652.D can be done, almost achieving the same performance as the no OSC case.

Abstract:This work proposes a novel direct-detection polarization division multiplexed OFDM scheme without the need of dynamic polarization control at a polarization-diverse receiver, and the proposed scheme is robust against polarization mode dispersion. Setting the frequency difference between two polarization-orthogonal reference carriers as one subcarrier spacing, possible signal fading can be avoided, and the corresponding interference from adjacent subcarriers is eliminated by a novel MIMO algorithm. The penalty caused by high channel matrix condition number can be decreased by inserting empty tones among subcarriers, and the polarization-dependent OSNR penalty at the BER of 10⁻³ is <3.6 dB with an empty tone inserted every 8 subcarriers. Moreover, the numerical results demonstrate the 16 × 10³-ps/nm chromatic dispersion and the 300-ps differential group delay will not induce additional penalty.

Abstract:Recently, sparse mode-division multiplexing (MDM) scheme has been proposed and experimentally verified to support long-haul MDM transmission without intermodal multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) processing, in which only multiple non-adjacent linearly-polarized (LP) modes in weakly-coupled few-mode fibers (FMFs) are utilized as active channels to achieve ultralow modal crosstalk. However, suffering from inevitable coupling among active modes and idle modes, signals may be exposed to distributed impairment in form of inter-mode interference (IMI). In this paper, the generation mechanism of IMI effect is firstly theoretically analyzed. Then numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the impact of IMI accompanied with distributed modal crosstalk (DMC) in sparse-MDM systems. Experimental setup for measuring IMI intensities of 3 non-degenerate LP modes (LP 01 , LP 02 and LP 03 ) in a weakly-coupled 10-LP-mode fiber is established and the measurement results agree well with the theoretical square-law relationship. Finally, the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty related to IMI effect is experimentally investigated for 60 km 3-mode FMF transmission, the experimental results of which show that IMI effect may be a major impairment of sparse-MDM systems. This work is beneficial to practical applications of long-haul MDM techniques.

Abstract:We explore the potential of chromatic dispersion and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) mitigation using Viterbi equalization in 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) and differential quadrature phase-shift keying (NRZ-DQPSK) systems. We show through Monte Carlo simulations that using Viterbi equalization improves the performance of NRZ-OOK, NRZ-DPSK and NRZ-DQPSK receivers. For NRZ-DQPSK receiver with a Viterbi equalizer, the chromatic dispersion tolerance is about 5000 ps/nm and the 1st order PMD tolerance is about 160 ps at 3 dB OSNR penalty.

Abstract:With the extension of the spectral exploitation of optical fibers beyond the C-band, accurate modeling and simulation of nonlinear interference (NLI) generation is of the utmost performance. Models and numerical simulation tools rely on the widely used Manakov equation (ME): however, this approach when considering also the effect of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is formally valid only over a narrow optical bandwidth. In order to analyze the range of validity of the ME and its applicability to future wide-band systems, we present numerical simulations, showing the interplay between NLI generation and PMD over long dispersion-uncompensated optical links, using coherent polarization division multiplexing (PDM) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Using a Monte-Carlo analysis of different PMD realizations based on the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, we show that PMD has a negligible effect on NLI generation, independently from the total system bandwidth. Based on this, we give strong numerical evidence that the ME can be safely used to estimate NLI generation well beyond its bandwidth of validity that is limited to the PMD coherence bandwidth.

Influence of Equalization Enhanced Phase Noise on Digital Nonlinearity Compensation in Nyquist-spaced Superchannel Transmission Systems

Abstract:In digital signal processing (DSP) based coherent optical communication systems, the effect of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) will seriously degrade the transmission performance of high-capacity optical transmission system. In this paper, we have investigated the influence of EEPN on 9-channel 32-Gbaud dual-polarization 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-64QAM) Nyquist-spaced superchannel optical field trial by using electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and multi-channel digital backpropagation (MC-DBP). The deteriorations caused by EEPN on the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and achievable information rates (AIRs) in high-speed optical communication systems have been studied. The system performance versus back-propagated bandwidth under different laser linewidth have also been demonstrated. The SNR penalty due to the distortion of EEPN achieves similar to 5.11 dB when FF-DBP is implemented, which informs that FF-DBP is more susceptible to EEPN, especially when the LO laser linewidth is larger. The system AIR versus different transmission distance under different EEPN interference using EDC-only and MC-DBP have also been evaluated, which show that there is a trade-off on the selection of lasers and back-propagated bandwidths to achieve a target AIR.

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in long distance fiber-optic link imposes a fundamental limitation to the capacity of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. Solving the inverse-propagating nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is in principle a fundamental methodology to mitigate fiber nonlinear impairments. However, solving multi-channel coupled NLSE is too complexed to be implemented commercially. It is of great importance to compensate for nonlinear distortions in high baud-rate WDM systems based on the information of one single target channel. In this article, we experimentally study fiber nonlinearity mitigation in an 8 × 512 Gb/s (64Gbaud) polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) Nyquist-WDM system with 960 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) loop transmission. The digital back-propagation (DBP) algorithm based on the target channel is applied, which can compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity. The inter-channel nonlinearity of cross phase modulation (XPM) induces nonlinear polarization scattering and nonlinear phase noise, which are partially correlated over adjacent pulses in high baud-rate systems. We propose an advanced nonlinear polarization crosstalk canceller (NPCC) with a novel decision feedback (DF) update strategy that is called the DF-NPCC, which incorporates the iterative process of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm and can thus mitigate the correlated nonlinear polarization crosstalk and nonlinear phase noise. Through nonlinearity mitigation, the DBP together with the DF-NPCC can achieve a 0.77 dB Q 2 factor promotion. The DF-NPCC can suppress the remaining nonlinear distortions after the single channel DBP, which corresponds to a 0.36 dB Q 2 factor improvement due to inter-channel nonlinear mitigation. Our work indicates XPM distortions can be mitigated with low complexity digital signal processing such as the DF-NPCC based on the single channel information, which provides an attractive solution to compensate inter-channel fiber nonlinearity in high baud-rate Nyquist-WDM systems.

Abstract:Using the degree of polarization as feedback signal to detect the polarization m ode dispersion (PMD) variation in the fiber links, an experiment of dynamic adap tive PMD compensation in 4×10?Gb/s optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) tr ansmission system is reported. The PMD compensator consists of a polarization co ntroller and a variable delay line with four degrees of freedom. Based on the va riable step-size peek search algorithm, the performance of the PMD compensator i s assessed in the eye pattern of a received signal. It is shown that the maximum compensated differential group delay is 25?ps, i.e. one bit period, and the co mpensation time can be less than 50?ms.
