Abstract:Downward solar radiation (DSR) is a crucial parameter in the modeling of surface radiation balance. It is the basic driving force of surface biological and chemical processes and the fundamental source of human energy. Photosynthesis of plants and surface drought are directly related to the DSR. In this study, based on the in-situ measured DSR in agricultural regions of China, two DSR products, i.e. the high-resolution surface solar radiation datasets over China (HRSSR) and the DSR product from China land surface data assimilation system (CLDAS), were validated. If the in-situ DSR is seriously contaminated by clouds, it will bring great uncertainties to the evaluation. In order to take the effect of cloud into account, a method for cloud screening was proposed and used in the study. Before removing the in-situ DSR which is influenced by cloud contamination, the lowest RMSEs are 143 W/m(2) and 145 W/m(2) for HRSSR and CLDAS, respectively; the highest RMSEs are 250 W/m(2) and 201 W/m(2) for HRSSR and CLDAS, respectively. After considering the cloud contamination, the lowest RMSE values decrease to 116 W/m(2) and 94 W/m(2) for HRSSR and CLDAS, respectively; and the highest RMSEs decrease to 198 W/m(2) and 167 W/m(2). Therefore, it is necessary to take the cloud contamination into account in the evaluation of the DSR product.
