Abstract:A novel hybrid gel electrolyte has been synthesized by self-assembling of 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl pyridine (PyPS) cation and the heteropoly anion. The results of FTIR spectra and XRD patterns indicate the synthesized hybrid gel electrolyte [PyPS]5SiMo[Formula: see text]VO[Formula: see text] possesses lamellar structure with [Formula: see text]-spacing of 2.09[Formula: see text]nm. The electrochemical stability potential window is up to 3[Formula: see text]V. Ionic conductivity of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] was observed above the phase transformation temperature under ambient condition. The conductivity enhances with increasing temperatures.

Abstract:A series of vanadium-substitutive polyoxometalate-based ionic liquids, [PyPS](6)PW9V3O40, [PyPS](4)PW11VO40, [PyPS](4)PMo11VO40 and [PyPS](7)P2W17VO62, bearing sulfo-group grafted ammonium (PyPS), are transformed to reversible thermal-response gel-type compounds. Interestingly, these geltype compounds exhibit an obvious increase in their conductivity during the reversible phase transformation, which means that they are a novel series of reversible thermal-response gelation electrolytes. The relationship between the component elements of the polyoxometalate-based ionic liquids and their electrochemical performances has been studied. The Dawson-type compound ([PyPS](7)P2W17VO62) has a higher conductivity than the Keggin-type one ([PyPS](4)PW11VO40) with the same number of vanadium atoms in the structure. What's more, the W-containing compounds ([PyPS](6)PW9V3O40 and [PyPS](4)PW11VO40) have higher conductivities than the Mo-containing one ([PyPS](4)PW11VO40).

Abstract:A novel polyoxometalate gel electrolyte was synthesized by 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl-3-methyl imidazolium (abbreviated as MIMPS) and H5SiW11VO40. The synthesized gel electrolyte was successfully characterized by infrared spectra (IR), ultraviolet spectra(UV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Theresults of the characterization indicate that existence of Keggin structure heteropolyanion in the tungstovanadosilicate-based ionic liquid gel. The change from crystal to amorphous was observed in the XRD patterns, before and after the cation (MIMPS) added.

Abstract:A series of polyoxometalate-based ionic liquids (POM-ILs) electrolytes has been synthesized by self-assembly from a heteropoly acid H7SiW9V3O40 and N-methyl imidazolium-1-(3-sulfonic) propyl (MIMPS). The POM-ILs electrolytes were characterized by FTIR, UV and XRD, and the results reveal that the POM-ILs electrolytes possess a typical polyoxometalate-based ionic liquid structure. Furthermore, the substitution effect of these compounds has been investigated. The thermostability and conductivity of the POM-ILs electrolytes increased with the number of protons in compounds increased.

Abstract:Acrylonitrile-sodium styrene sulfonate copolymer/layered double hydroxides nanocomposites were prepared by in situ aqueous precipitation copolymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) and sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) in the presence of 4-vinylbenzene sulfonate intercalated layered double hydroxides (MgAl-VBS LDHs) and transferred to acrylonitrile-styrene sulfonic acid (AN-SSA) copolymer/LDHs nanocomposites as a proton-conducting polymer electrolyte. MgAl-VBS LDHs were prepared by a coprecipitation method, and the structure and composition of MgAl-VBS LDHs were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. X-ray diffraction result of AN-SSS copolymer/LDHs nanocomposites indicated that the LDHs layers were well dispersed in the AN-SSS copolymer matrix. All the AN-SSS copolymer/LDHs nanocomposites showed significant enhancement of the decomposition temperatures compared with the pristine AN-SSS copolymer, as identified by the thermogravimetric analysis. The methanol crossover was decreased and the proton conductivity was highly enhanced for the AN-SSA copolymer/LDHs nanocomposite electrolyte systems. In the case of the nanocomposite electrolyte containing 2% (by mass) LDHs, the proton conductivity of 2.60×10−3 S·m−1 was achieved for the polymer electrolyte.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) was synthesized in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectrum revealed that dodecyl sulfate (DS) anions were successfully intercalated into the interlayers of LDH. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/LDH nanocomposite membranes were prepared by mixing the DS intercalated LDH with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in N,N ’′-dimethylformamide solution followed by the solvent evaporation. The nanocomposite membranes were further swollen with a H 3 PO 4 solution in ethylene carbonate-propylene carbonate to obtain the proton conducting nanocomposite gel electrolytes. XRD and transmission electron microscope results showed that LDH particles were well-dispersed in the polymer matrix and partially intercalated by polymer chains. The proton conductivity was highly enhanced in the nanocomposite gel electrolyte systems. In the case of the nanocomposite gel electrolyte containing 7.40 wt.% LDH, the proton conductivity increased by about 2.5 times compared to pure PVDF gel electrolyte.

Abstract:A new vanadium and molybdenum-substituted quaternary silicon-containing heteropoly acid H6SiW9MoV2O40 center dot 15H(2)O has been synthesized in this paper by the stepwise acidification and the stepwise addition of elemental solutions. The structural feature and hydration of this product were characterized by IR, UV, XRD and TG-DTA, and its proton conductivity was measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The result of EIS shows that H6SiW9MoV2O40 center dot 15H(2)O is a solid high-proton conductor with a conductivity of 6.01 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 22 degrees C and 80% relative humidity, which increases at higher temperatures. Its conductive activation energy is 27.5 kJ mol(-1), which suggests that the mechanism of proton conduction is dominated by the vehicle mechanism.
Modification of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride) Gel Electrolyte by Layered Double Hydroxide

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides(LDH) were new inorganic materials used in the modification of polymer electrolytes.In this work,Mg-Al type LDH intercalated with dodecyl sulfate groups(DS-LDH) was prepared by a co-precipitation method and composed with poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) base proton and lithium conducting gel electrolytes.The results show that DS-LDH particles were mainly delaminated and dispersed in the PVDF matrix in a nanometer scale.The ionic conductivity of composite gel electrolyte increased with the increase of weight fraction of DS-LDH,and reached a maximum value when the weight fractions of DS-LDH were 7.4% and 5.66% for proton and lithium conducting electrolytes,respectively.It was also found that the ionic conductivities of pure PVDF and PVDF/DS-LDH composite lithium conducting gel electrolytes increased with temperature and obeyed Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher equation.

Abstract:A series of temperature-dependent gel-type ionic liquid compounds have been synthesized from 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl-3-methyl imidazolium (abbreviated as MIMPS) and three vanadium-substituted heteropoly acids H5SiW11VO40, H5SiMo11VO40 and H7SiW9V3O40. The designed and synthesized gel-type polyoxometalate ionic liquids (POM-ILs) have demonstrated a tendency to exhibit a layered structure. Moreover, they can undergo a phase transformation from a viscous gel-state to a liquid-state below 100 °C, and ionic conductivity up to 10(-3) S cm(-1) was observed at 120 °C. Cyclic voltammetry was carried out to study their electrochemical properties in organic solutions, and it was found that the oxidizability of the three POM-ILs decreases in the order: [MIMPS]7SiW9V3O40 > [MIMPS]5SiMo11VO40 > [MIMPS]5SiW11VO40. This result indicates that the redox behavior can be tuned by changing the chemical composition of the heteropolyanions.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes have the advantages of both a solid electrolyte and a liquid electrolyte. As a transitional product before which a solid electrolyte can be comprehensively used, gel polymer electrolytes are of great research value. They can reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion and explosion caused by leakage during the use of conventional liquid electrolytes. Poly(vinylidene-fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP), a material with excellent performance, has been widely utilized in the preparation of gel polymer electrolytes. Here, PVDF–HFP-based gel polymer membranes with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) pores were prepared using a phase inversion method, and Octavinyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OVAPOSS) was doped to improve its temperature resistance as well as its ionic conductivity, to enhance its safety and electrochemical performance. The final prepared polymer membrane had a porosity of 85.06% and still had a certain mechanical strength at 160 °C without any shrinkage. The gel polymer electrolyte prepared with this polymer membrane had an ionic conductivity of 1.62 × 10−3 S·cm−1 at 30 °C, as well as an electrochemical window of about 5.5 V. The LiCoO2-Li button half-cell prepared therefrom had a specific capacity of 141 mAh·g−1 at a rate of 1C. The coulombic efficiency remained above 99% within 100 cycles and the capacity retention rate reached 99.5%, which reveals an excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:We report the fabrication, structure, and heteropolyanion structure effect of polyoxometalate (POM)/ionic liquid (IL) supramolecular gels. These supramolecular gels exhibit ordered structures, as a result of their excellent reversible self-assembly, and they show various physicochemical properties, determined by the heteropolyanion structure effect of POM anions. Specifically, the formation of POM/IL supramolecular gels results in a highly ordered layer-shape structure, which has been calculated using X-ray powder diffraction patterns and proven by transmission electron microscopy images for the first time. When these POM/IL supramolecular gels are heated, they become viscous liquid sols, with melting isotropic drops and even flowerlike structures on microscopic scales, while it undergoes a reversible gel-sol phase transformation from gel to sol. The heteropolyanion structure effect in these two IL gels, [TBTP](5)PW10V2O40 and [TBTP](8)P2W16V2O62, on their physicochemical properties is demonstrated. The POM structures have a strong structure effect on the physicochemical properties. As the size of heteropolyanions increases, there is a significant improvement in the conductivity, thermal performance, and oxidizability, with a lower phase inversion temperature, which means that the Dawson-type compound, [TBTP](8)P2W16V2O62, has a higher conductivity, lower melting point, stronger oxidizability, and better thermal performance than the Keggin-type compound, [TBTP](5)PW10V2O40, under the same conditions.

Abstract:A novel molybdenum- and vanadium-substituted quaternary heteropoly acid H5SiW9Mo2VO40[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]13H2O has been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV, TG-DTA and XRD. The proton conductive performance was studied by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which demonstrated that H5SiW9Mo2VO40[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]13H2O shows excellent proton conduction performance with proton conductivity reaching [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text]cm[Formula: see text] at 60∘C and 80% relative humidity. In the temperature range of measurements, conductivity enhances with higher temperature. The proton conductive mechanism of this new heteropoly acid is the vehicle mechanism due to the activation energy of 31.91[Formula: see text]kJ [Formula: see text] mol[Formula: see text].

Abstract:A series of new reversible phase transformation gel-type ionic liquid compounds, [PyPS](5)SiW11VO40, [PyPS](7)SiW9V3O40, [TEAPS](5)SiW11VO40 and [TEAPS](7)SiW9V3O40, have been synthesized from two organic ammoniums 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl-pyridine (PyPS), 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl-triethylammonium (TEAPS) and vanadium-substituted heteropoly acids H5SiW11VO40 and H7SiW9V3O40. The products can undergo a phase transformation from viscous gel-state to liquid-state below 100 degrees C, and ionic conductivity up to 10(-3) S cm(-1) was observed at 110 degrees C for these gel-type POM-ILs. The relationship between the component elements of the products and their physicochemical property has been studied. Their thermostability was measured using thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and the result indicates that the less vanadium atoms there are inside the heteropoly anion, the more stable the POM-IL is at high temperature. Cyclic voltammetry is carried out to study their electrochemical properties in organic solution. The potential values of redox waves confirm that the oxidability of these geltype POM-ILs can be controlled upon changing the number of vanadium atoms in the heteropolyanions. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A new vanadium and molybdenum-substituted Keggin-type quaternary heteropoly acid H5PW9MoV2O40·10H2O has been synthesized by the stepwise acidification and the stepwise addition of element solutions. The product is characterized by the IR, UV, XRD, TG–DTA and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS measurement shows the conductivity value of H5PW9MoV2O40·10H2O is 8.92×10−3Scm−1 at 22°C and 80% relative humidity, which increases with higher temperature. Its mechanism of proton conduction is Vehicle mechanism for its conductive activation energy of 23.45kJmol−1.

Abstract:Abstract The significant breakthroughs of flexible gel electrolytes have attracted extensive attention in modern wearable electronic gadgets. The lack of all-around high-performing gels limits the advantages of such devices for practical applications. To this end, developing a multi-functional gel architecture with superior ionic conductivity while enjoying good mechanical flexibility is a bottleneck to overcome. Herein, an architecturally engineered gel, based on PVA and H 3 PO 4 with different molecular weights of PVA for various PVA/H 3 PO 4 ratios, was developed. The results show the dependence of ionic conductivity on molecular weight and also charge carrier concentration. Consequently, fine-tuning of PVA-based gels through a simple yet systematic and well-regulated strategy to achieve highly ion-conducting gels, with the highest ionic conductivity of 14.75 ± 1.39 mS cm -1 have been made to fulfill the requirement of flexible devices. More importantly, gel electrolytes possess good mechanical robustness while exhibiting high-elasticity (%766.66 ± 59.73), making it an appropriate candidate for flexible devices.

Abstract:Two new solid hybrid molecular materials [PyPS]H 6 P 2 W 17 VO 62 and [PyPS]H 8 P 2 W 15 V 3 O 62 have been synthesized from 1-(3-sulfonic group) propyl-pyridine ionic liquid cation and tungstovanadophosphoric anion with the Dawson structure. They were characterized by element analysis, impedance spectroscopy (IS), IR- and UV-spectroscopy. The formation of the hybrid molecular compounds with the Dawson structure was showed. Ion conductivity of [PyPS]H 6 P 2 W 17 VO 62 and [PyPS]H 8 P 2 W 15 V 3 O 62 are 3.99 × 10 −3 and 7.37 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 18°C and 55% relative humidity respectively. The activation energies of proton conductivity are 28.2 and 26.7 kJ mol −1 respectively.

Abstract:Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) have drawn a lot of interest due to their special qualities, which include high conductivity that is comparable to liquid electrolytes, excellent mechanical stability, and high flexibility. Using the solution casting approach, we have synthesized copper ion conducting gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) films made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the polymer host. An ionic salt, copper sulphate (CuSO4), and a plasticizing solvent, PANI/ [BMIM] [BF4] polyionic liquid, were employed. The structural, electrical, and electrochemical properties of the GPE films were carefully examined. The significant XRD crystalline peak decreased and disappeared upon the addition of PANI/[BMIM] [BF4] polyionic liquid, suggesting that PIL is a useful plasticizer for the PVA/HPMC polymers. The conductivity of GPE films was determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The sample containing 20% CuSO4 salt has the highest room temperature conductivity (σ = 5.11 × 10−3 S/cm). The measurements of transference numbers show that ions are primarily responsible for the transport of these electrolytes. It seems that the working voltage range is high enough to be used as an electrolyte in batteries, based on the results of using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cyclic voltammetry to evaluate the electrochemical stability of the GPE films.

Abstract:New electrolyte designs are necessary for overcoming multiple challenges posed by emerging lithium-metal battery chemistries. Task-specific viscoelastic electrolytes are specifically required that are capable of simultaneously sustaining reversible electrochemistry at the Li metal anode, maintaining high oxidative stability at the battery cathode and achieving high room-temperature ionic conductivity in the electrolyte bulk. Here, we synthesize and study a series of polymeric electrolytes composed of poly-1,3-dioxolane (poly-DOL) networks formed by ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane/ethylene carbonate (EC) mixtures by a commonly used LiPF6 electrolyte salt. The complex kinetics of the DOL polymerization reaction in EC results in nonlinear phase behavior, including the appearance of a critical transition to an entangled, solid-like electrolyte state at 40% DOL. The transition is mediated by a range of physicochemical regimes—from liquid-like solutions to highly viscous conducting gels. We show that poly-DOL/EC electrolytes with a high concentration of the DOL precursor exhibit improved electrochemical stability compared to conventional DOL-based electrolytes, while maintaining good room temperature ionic conductivity. We show further that the EC component imparts oxidative stability, enabling their use in rechargeable, room-temperature Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 electrochemical cells.

Abstract:The uneven flux and strong solvation of Zn2+ ions in aqueous electrolytes bring undesirable dendritic deposition and side reactions to zinc metal anodes (ZMAs). Hydrogel electrolytes have considerable mechanical strength and limited water content, which can suppress dendrite growth and alleviate side reactions. Nevertheless, the design of hydrogel electrolytes with desired electrochemical and mechanical properties is still challenged due to the lack of understanding of how structural features affect performances. Herein, we systematically investigate the hydrogel electrolytes for ZMAs by regulating their crosslinking and grafting structures. Experiments and theoretical simulations emphasize the importance of the network structure and the polymetric anions bonded on the hydrogel. The PSX gel crosslinked by carboxyl-grafted polyvinyl alcohol and xanthan gum shows superior performance, contributed by its abundant -COO− groups and stable three-dimensional structure. The PSX electrolyte shows high ionic conductivity (18.86 mS cm−1) and a considerable Zn2+ transference number (0.8). Zn//Zn cells with PSX electrolytes deliver long cycle lives accompanied by uniform zinc deposition, few by-products, and suppressed hydrogen evolution. When paired with V2O5 or active carbon cathodes, the PSX electrolyte also shows good compatibility and excellent performance. Flexible pouch cells are further demonstrated to work normally under different deformation and stress conditions.
