Abstract:Hadwiger's conjecture implies that n≤α h for all graphs of order n, stability number α, and Hadwiger number h. Combining ideas of Kawarabayashi et al. and Wood, we prove that n≤ (α-1)(2h-5)+5 for such graphs if α≥ 3 and h≥ 5.

Abstract:The Hadwiger number h(G) of a graph G is the maximum size of a complete minor of G. Hadwiger's Conjecture states that h(G) >= \chi(G). Since \chi(G) \alpha(G) >= |V(G)|, Hadwiger's Conjecture implies that \alpha(G) h(G) >= |V(G)|. We show that (2 \alpha(G) - \lceil log_t(t \alpha(G)/2) \rceil) h(G) \geq |V(G)| where t is approximately 6.83. For graphs with \alpha(G) \geq 14, this improves on a recent result of Kawarabayashi and Song who showed (2 \alpha(G) - 2) h(G) >= |V(G)| when \alpha(G) >= 3.

Abstract:Let $spex(n,H_{minor})$ denote the maximum spectral radius of $n$-vertex $H$-minor free graphs. The problem on determining this extremal value can be dated back to the early 1990s. Up to now, it has been solved for $n$ sufficiently large and some special minors, such as $\{K_{2,3},K_4\}$, $\{K_{3,3},K_5\}$, $K_r$ and $K_{s,t}$. In this paper, we find some unified phenomena on general minors. Every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with spectral radius $\rho\geq spex(n,H_{minor})$ contains either an $H$ minor or a spanning book $K_{\gamma_H}\nabla(n-\gamma_H)K_1$, where $\gamma_H=|H|-\alpha(H)-1$. Furthermore, assume that $G$ is $H$-minor free and $\Gamma^*_s(H)$ is the family of $s$-vertex irreducible induced subgraphs of $H$, then $G$ minus its $\gamma_H$ dominating vertices is $\Gamma^*_{\alpha(H)+1}(H)$-minor saturate, and it is further edge-maximal if $\Gamma^*_{\alpha(H)+1}(H)$ is a connected family. As applications, we obtain some known results on minors mentioned above. We also determine the extremal values for some other minors, such as flowers, wheels, generalized books and complete multi-partite graphs. Our results extend some conjectures on planar graphs, outer-planar graphs and $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs. To obtain the results, we combine stability method, spectral techniques and structural analyses. Especially, we give an exploration of using absorbing method in spectral extremal problems.

Abstract:The graph minor structure theorem by Robertson and Seymour shows that every graph that excludes a fixed minor can be constructed by a combination of four ingredients: graphs embedded in a surface of bounded genus, a bounded number of vortices of bounded width, a bounded number of apex vertices, and the clique-sum operation. This paper studies the converse question: What is the maximum order of a complete graph minor in a graph constructed using these four ingredients? Our main result answers this question up to a constant factor.

Abstract:Let $h(G)$ denote the largest $t$ such that $G$ contains $K_t$ as a minor and $\chi(G)$ be the chromatic number of $G$ respectively. In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that $h(G) \geq \chi(G)$ for any graph $G$. In this paper, we prove that Hadwiger's conjecture holds for $H$-free graphs with independence number two, where $H$ is one of some specified graphs.

Abstract:Erdős and Simonovits asked the following question: For an integer $r\geq 2$ and a family of non-bipartite graphs $\mathcal{H}$, what is the tight bound of $\alpha$ such that any $\mathcal{H}$-free $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $\alpha n$ has chromatic number at most $r$? We answer this question for $r=2$ and any family of odd cycles. Let $l\le k$ and $n\ge 1000k^{8}$ be positive integers. Let ${\mathcal C}$ be a family of odd cycles, $C_{2l+1}$ be the shortest odd cycle not in ${\mathcal C}$, and $C_{2k+1}$ be the longest odd cycle in ${\mathcal C}$. Let $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ denote the graph obtained by taking $2l+1$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_{\frac{n}{2(2l+1)},\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}}$ and selecting a vertex in each of them such that these vertices form a cycle of length $2l+1$. Let $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ denote the balanced blow up of $C_{2k+3}$ with $n$ vertices. Note that both $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ are $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graphs. We show that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free graph with $\delta(G)>\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}$, then $G$ is bipartite. The bound is tight evident by $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Moreover, the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}$ is $BC_{2l+1}(n)$, and the the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{2}{2k+3}n$ is $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Our result also unifies stability results of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, Häggkvist and Yuan and Peng for large $n$.

Tight minimum degree conditions for apex-outerplanar minors and subdivisions in graphs and digraphs

Abstract:Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture and related problems for list-coloring, we study graphs $H$ for which every graph with minimum degree at least $|V(H)|-1$ contains $H$ as a minor. We prove that a large class of apex-outerplanar graphs satisfies this property. Our result gives the first examples of such graphs whose vertex cover numbers are significantly larger than half of the number of its vertices, which breaks a barrier for attacking related coloring problems via extremal functions, and recovers all known such graphs that have arbitrarily large maximum degree. Our proof can be adapted to directed graphs to show that if $\vec H$ is the digraph obtained from a directed cycle or an in-arborescence by adding an apex source, then every digraph with minimum out-degree $|V(\vec H)|-1$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdivision or a butterfly minor respectively. These results provide the optimal upper bound for the chromatic number and dichromatic number of graphs and digraphs that do not contain the aforementioned graphs or digraphs as a minor, butterfly minor and a subdivision, respectively. Special cases of our results solve an open problem of Aboulker, Cohen, Havet, Lochet, Moura and Thomassé and strengthen results of Gishboliner, Steiner and Szabó.

Abstract:We consider the minimum degree stability of graphs forbidding odd cycles: What is the tight bound on the minimum degree to guarantee that the structure of a C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph inherits from the extremal graph (a balanced complete bipartite graph)? Andrásfai, Erdős, and Sós showed that if a { C 3 , C 5 , ... , C 2 k + 1 } ‐free graph on n vertices has minimum degree greater than 2 2 k + 3 n , then it is bipartite. Häggkvist showed that for k ∈ { 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 } , if a C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph on n vertices has minimum degree greater than 2 2 k + 3 n , then it is bipartite. Häggkvist also pointed out that this result cannot be extended to k ≥ 5 . In this paper, we give a complete answer for any k ≥ 5 . We show that if k ≥ 5 and G is an n ‐vertex C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph with δ ( G ) ≥ n 6 + 1 , then G is bipartite, and the bound n 6 + 1 is tight.

Abstract:Win proved a well-known result that the graph G of connectivity κ ( G ) with α ( G ) ≤ κ ( G ) + k − 1 ( k ≥ 2) has a spanning k -ended tree, i.e., a spanning tree with at most k leaves. In this paper, the authors extended the Win theorem in case when κ ( G ) = 1 to the following: Let G be a simple connected graph of order large enough such that α ( G ) ≤ k + 1 ( k ≥ 3) and such that the number of maximum independent sets of cardinality k + 1 is at most n − 2 k − 2. Then G has a spanning k -ended tree.
Finite convergence of sum-of-squares hierarchies for the stability number of a graph

Abstract:We investigate a hierarchy of semidefinite bounds $\vartheta^{(r)}(G)$ for the stability number $\alpha(G)$ of a graph $G$, based on its copositive programming formulation and introduced by de Klerk and Pasechnik [{\em SIAM J. Optim.} 12 (2002), pp.875--892], who conjectured convergence to $\alpha(G)$ in $r=\alpha(G)-1$ steps. Even the weaker conjecture claiming finite convergence is still open. We establish links between this hierarchy and sum-of-squares hierarchies based on the Motzkin-Straus formulation of $\alpha(G)$, which we use to show finite convergence when $G$ is acritical, i.e., when $\alpha(G\setminus e)=\alpha(G)$ for all edges $e$ of $G$. This relies, in particular, on understanding the structure of the minimizers of the Motzkin-Straus formulation and showing that their number is finite precisely when $G$ is acritical. Moreover we show that these results hold in the general setting of the weighted stable set problem for graphs equipped with positive node weights. In addition, as a byproduct we show that deciding whether a standard quadratic program has finitely many minimizers does not admit a polynomial-time algorithm unless P=NP.

Abstract:Given a graph $H$, let us denote by $f_\chi(H)$ and $f_\ell(H)$, respectively, the maximum chromatic number and the maximum list chromatic number of $H$-minor-free graphs. Hadwiger's famous coloring conjecture from 1943 states that $f_\chi(K_t)=t-1$ for every $t \ge 2$. In contrast, for list coloring it is known that $2t-o(t) \le f_\ell(K_t) \le O(t (\log \log t)^6)$ and thus, $f_\ell(K_t)$ is bounded away from the conjectured value $t-1$ for $f_\chi(K_t)$ by at least a constant factor. The so-called $H$-Hadwiger's conjecture, proposed by Seymour, asks to prove that $f_\chi(H)=\textsf{v}(H)-1$ for a given graph $H$ (which would be implied by Hadwiger's conjecture). In this paper, we prove several new lower bounds on $f_\ell(H)$, thus exploring the limits of a list coloring extension of $H$-Hadwiger's conjecture. Our main results are: For every $\varepsilon>0$ and all sufficiently large graphs $H$ we have $f_\ell(H)\ge (1-\varepsilon)(\textsf{v}(H)+\kappa(H))$, where $\kappa(H)$ denotes the vertex-connectivity of $H$. For every $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $C=C(\varepsilon)>0$ such that asymptotically almost every $n$-vertex graph $H$ with $\left\lceil C n\log n\right\rceil$ edges satisfies $f_\ell(H)\ge (2-\varepsilon)n$. The first result generalizes recent results on complete and complete bipartite graphs and shows that the list chromatic number of $H$-minor-free graphs is separated from the natural lower bound $(\textsf{v}(H)-1)$ by a constant factor for all large graphs $H$ of linear connectivity. The second result tells us that even when $H$ is a very sparse graph (with an average degree just logarithmic in its order), $f_\ell(H)$ can still be separated from $(\textsf{v}(H)-1)$ by a constant factor arbitrarily close to $2$. Conceptually these results indicate that the graphs $H$ for which $f_\ell(H)$ is close to $(\textsf{v}(H)-1)$ are typically rather sparse.

Chromatic number and complete graph substructures for degree sequences

Abstract:Given a graphic degree sequence $D$, let $\chi(D)$ (respectively $\omega(D)$, $h(D)$, and $H(D)$) denote the maximum value of the chromatic number (respectively, the size of the largest clique, largest clique subdivision, and largest clique minor) taken over all simple graphs whose degree sequence is $D$. It is proved that $\chi(D)\le h(D)$. Moreover, it is shown that a subdivision of a clique of order $\chi(D)$ exists where each edge is subdivided at most once and the set of all subdivided edges forms a collection of disjoint stars. This bound is an analogue of the Hajos Conjecture for degree sequences and, in particular, settles a conjecture of Neil Robertson that degree sequences satisfy the bound $\chi(D)\le H(D)$ (which is related to the Hadwiger Conjecture). It is also proved that $\chi(D)\le {6/5}\omega(D)+{3/5}$ and that $\chi(D) \le {4/5}\omega(D) + {1/5}\Delta(D) + 1$, where $\Delta(D)$ denotes the maximum degree in $D$. The latter inequality is a strengthened version of a conjecture of Bruce Reed. All derived inequalities are best possible.

Abstract:For a graph G , α '(G) is the matching number of G . Let k≥ 2 be an integer, K_n be the complete graph of order n . Assume that G_1, G_2, … , G_k is a k -decomposition of K_n . In this paper, we show that (1) ⌊n/2⌋≤∑ _i=1^kα '(G_i)≤ k⌊n/2⌋ . (2) If each G_i is non-empty for i = 1, … , k , then for n≥ 6k , ∑ _i=1^kα '(G_i)≥⌊n+k-1/2⌋ . (3) If G_i has no isolated vertices for i = 1, … , k , then for n≥ 8k , ∑ _i=1^kα '(G_i)≥⌊n/2⌋ +k. The bounds in (1), (2) and (3) are sharp. (4) When k= 2 , we characterize all the extremal graphs which attain the lower bounds in (1), (2) and (3), respectively.

Abstract:Let $n,s,k$ be three positive integers such that $1\leq s\leq(n-k+1)/k$ and let $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$. Let $H$ be a $k$-graph with vertex set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$, and let $e(H)$ denote the number of edges of $H$. Let $\nu(H)$ and $\tau(H)$ denote the size of a largest matching and the size of a minimum vertex cover in $H$, respectively. Define $A^k_i(n,s):=\{e\in\binom{[n]}{k}:|e\cap[(s+1)i-1]|\geq i\}$ for $2\leq i\leq k$ and $HM^k_{n,s}:=\big\{e\in\binom{[n]}{k}:e\cap[s-1]\neq\emptyset\big\} \cup\big\{S\big\}\cup \big\{e\in\binom{[n]}{k}: s\in e, e\cap S\neq \emptyset\}$, where $S=\{s+1,\ldots,s+k\}$. Frankl and Kupavskii conjectured that if $\nu(H)\leq s$ and $\tau(H)>s$, then $e(H)\leq \max\{|A^k_2(n,s)|,\ldots ,|A^k_k(n,s)|,|HM^k_{n,s}|\}$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for $k=3$ and sufficiently large $n$.
Algebraic approach to stability results for Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem

Abstract:Celebrated results often unfold like episodes in a long-running series. In the field of extremal set thoery, Erdős, Ko, and Rado in 1961 established that any $k$-uniform intersecting family on $[n]$ has a maximum size of $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$, with the unique extremal structure being a star. In 1967, Hilton and Milner followed up with a pivotal result, showing that if such a family is not a star, its size is at most $\binom{n-1}{k-1} - \binom{n-k-1}{k-1} + 1$, and they identified the corresponding extremal structures. In recent years, Han and Kohayakawa, Kostochka and Mubayi, and Huang and Peng have provided the second and third levels of stability results in this line of research. In this paper, we provide a unified approach to proving the stability result for the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem at any level. Our framework primarily relies on a robust linear algebra method, which leverages appropriate non-shadows to effectively handle the structural complexities of these intersecting families.

Abstract:Hadwiger conjectured in 1943 that for every integer $t \ge 1$, every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. Kostochka, and independently Thomason, proved every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^{1/2})$-colorable. Recently, Postle improved it to $O(t (\log \log t)^6)$-colorable. In this paper, we show that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t (\log \log t)^{5})$-colorable.

Abstract:For any positive integer $k$, we show that every maximal $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with at least $n^2/4-o(n^{3/2})$ edges contains an induced complete bipartite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices. We also show that this is best possible.

Abstract:Treewidth and Hadwiger number are two of the most important parameters in structural graph theory. This paper studies graph classes in which large treewidth implies the existence of a large complete graph minor. To formalise this, we say that a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is (tw,had)-bounded if there is a function $f$ (called the (tw,had)-bounding function) such that tw$(G)$ $\leq$ $f$(had$(G)$) for every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$. We characterise (tw,had)-bounded graph classes as those that exclude some planar graph as an induced minor, and use this characterisation to show that every proper vertex-minor-closed class is (tw,had)-bounded. Furthermore, we demonstrate that any (tw,had)-bounded graph class has a (tw,had)-bounding function in O(had$(G)^9$polylog(had$(G)$)). Our bound comes from the bound for the Grid Minor Theorem given by Chuzhoy and Tan, and any quantitative improvement to their result will lead directly to an improvement to our result. More strongly, we conjecture that every (tw,had)-bounded graph class has a linear (tw,had)-bounding function. In support of this conjecture, we show that it holds for the class of outer-string graphs, and for a natural generalisation of outer-string graphs: intersection graphs of strings rooted at the boundary of a fixed surface. We also verify our conjecture for low-rank perturbations of circle graphs, which is an important step towards verifying it for all proper vertex-minor-closed classes.
