Abstract:For any positive integer $k$, we show that every maximal $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with at least $n^2/4-o(n^{3/2})$ edges contains an induced complete bipartite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices. We also show that this is best possible.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is called $C_{2k+1}$-free if it does not contain any cycle of length $2k+1$. In 1981, Haggkvist, Faudree and Schelp showed that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}+1$ edges is bipartite. In this paper, we extend their result and show that for $1\leq t\leq 2k-2$ and $n\geq 318t^2k$, every $n$-vertex $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-t-1)^2}{4}+\binom{t+2}{2}$ edges can be made bipartite by either deleting at most $t-1$ vertices or deleting at most $\binom{\lfloor\frac{t+2}{2}\rfloor}{2}+\binom{\lceil\frac{t+2}{2}\rceil}{2}-1$ edges. The construction shows that this is best possible.

Abstract:We consider the minimum degree stability of graphs forbidding odd cycles: What is the tight bound on the minimum degree to guarantee that the structure of a C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph inherits from the extremal graph (a balanced complete bipartite graph)? Andrásfai, Erdős, and Sós showed that if a { C 3 , C 5 , ... , C 2 k + 1 } ‐free graph on n vertices has minimum degree greater than 2 2 k + 3 n , then it is bipartite. Häggkvist showed that for k ∈ { 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 } , if a C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph on n vertices has minimum degree greater than 2 2 k + 3 n , then it is bipartite. Häggkvist also pointed out that this result cannot be extended to k ≥ 5 . In this paper, we give a complete answer for any k ≥ 5 . We show that if k ≥ 5 and G is an n ‐vertex C 2 k + 1 ‐free graph with δ ( G ) ≥ n 6 + 1 , then G is bipartite, and the bound n 6 + 1 is tight.

A strong structural stability of $C_{2k+1}$-free graphs

Abstract:Füredi and Gunderson showed that $ex(n, C_{2k+1})$ is achieved only on $K_{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor, \lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil}$ if $n\ge 4k-2$. It is natural to study how far a $ C_{2k+1}$-free graph is from being <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bipartite.Let" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> $T^*(r, n)$ be obtained by adding a suspension $K_{r}$ with $1$ suspension point to $K_{\lfloor\frac{n-r+1}{2}\rfloor, \lceil\frac{n-r+1}{2}\rceil}$. We show that for integers $r, k$ with $3\le r\le 2k-4$ and $n\ge 20(r+2)^2k$, if $G$ is a $C_{2k+1}$-free $n$-vertex graph with $e(G)\ge e(T^*(r, n))$, then $G$ is obtained by adding suspensions to a bipartite graph one by one and the total number of vertices in all suspensions minus intersection points is no more than $r-1$. In other words, $G=B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^p G_i$, where $B$ is a bipartite graph, $G_1$ is a suspension to $B$, $G_j$ is a suspension to $B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i$ for $2\le j\le p$ and $\sum\limits_{i=1}^p \vert V(G_i)-V(G_i)\cap V(B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i) \vert\le r-1$. Furthermore, $\sum\limits_{i=1}^p \vert V(G_i)-V(G_i)\cap V(B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i) \vert= r-1$ if and only if $G=T^*(r, n)$. Let $d_2(G)=\min\{|T|: T\subseteq V(G), G-T \ \text{is bipartite}\}$ and $\gamma_2(G)=\min\{|E|: E\subseteq E(G), G-E \ \text{is bipartite}\}$. Our structural stability result implies that $d_2(G)\le r-1$ and $\gamma_2(G)\le {\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil \choose 2}+{\lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor \choose 2}$ under the same condition, which is a recent result of Ren-Wang-Wang-Yang [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 38 (2024)]. They proved $d_2(G)\le r-1$ and $\gamma_2(G)\le {\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil \choose 2}+{\lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor \choose 2}$ separately. We introduce a new concept strong-$2k$-core which is the key that we can give a stronger structural stability result but a simpler proof.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 1733-1756, June 2024. A graph [math] is called [math]-free if it does not contain any cycle of length [math]. In 1962, Erdös (together with Gallai), and independently Andrásfai, proved that every [math]-vertex triangle-free graph with more than [math] edges is bipartite. In this paper, we extend their result and show that for [math] and [math], every [math]-vertex [math]-free graph with more than [math] edges can be made bipartite by either deleting at most [math] vertices or deleting at most [math] edges. The construction shows that this is best possible.

Abstract:If a graph G has n ≥ 4 k vertices and more than n 2 / 4 edges, then it contains a copy of C 2 k + 1. In 1992, Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau showed even more, that the number of edges that occur in a triangle of such a G is at least 2 ⌊ n / 2 ⌋ + 1, and this bound is tight. They also showed that the minimum number of edges in G that occur in a copy of C 2 k + 1 for k ≥ 2 suddenly starts being quadratic in n , and conjectured that for any k ≥ 2, the correct lower bound should be 2 n 2 / 9 − O ( n ). Very recently, Füredi and Maleki constructed a counterexample for k = 2 and proved an asymptotically matching lower bound, namely that for any ε > 0 graphs with ( 1 + ε ) n 2 / 4 edges contain at least ( 2 + 2 ) n 2 / 16 ∼ 0.2134 n 2 edges that occur in C 5. In this paper, we use a different approach to tackle this problem and prove the following stronger result: Every n -vertex graph with at least ⌊ n 2 / 4 ⌋ + 1 edges has at least ( 2 + 2 ) n 2 / 16 − O ( n 15 / 8 ) edges that occur in C 5. Next, for all k ≥ 3 and n sufficiently large, we determine the exact minimum number of edges that occur in C 2 k + 1 for n -vertex graphs with more than n 2 / 4 edges, and show it is indeed equal to ⌊ n 2 4 ⌋ + 1 − ⌊ n + 4 6 ⌋ ⌊ n + 1 6 ⌋ = 2 n 2 / 9 − O ( n ). For both of these results, we give a structural description of all the large extremal configurations as well as obtain the corresponding stability results, which answers a conjecture of Füredi and Maleki. The main ingredient of our results is a novel approach that combines the semidefinite method from flag algebras together with ideas from finite forcibility of graph limits, which may be of independent interest. This approach allowed us to keep track of the additional extra edge needed to guarantee even the existence of a single copy of C 2 k + 1, which a standard flag algebra approach would not be able to handle. Also, we establish the first application of the semidefinite method in a setting, where the set of tight examples has exponential size and arises from two very different constructions.
Degree stability of graphs forbidding odd cycles

Abstract:Erdős and Simonovits asked the following question: For an integer $r\geq 2$ and a family of non-bipartite graphs $\mathcal{H}$, what is the tight bound of $\alpha$ such that any $\mathcal{H}$-free $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree at least $\alpha n$ has chromatic number at most $r$? We answer this question for $r=2$ and any family of odd cycles. Let $l\le k$ and $n\ge 1000k^{8}$ be positive integers. Let ${\mathcal C}$ be a family of odd cycles, $C_{2l+1}$ be the shortest odd cycle not in ${\mathcal C}$, and $C_{2k+1}$ be the longest odd cycle in ${\mathcal C}$. Let $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ denote the graph obtained by taking $2l+1$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_{\frac{n}{2(2l+1)},\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}}$ and selecting a vertex in each of them such that these vertices form a cycle of length $2l+1$. Let $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ denote the balanced blow up of $C_{2k+3}$ with $n$ vertices. Note that both $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$ are $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graphs. We show that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free graph with $\delta(G)>\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}$, then $G$ is bipartite. The bound is tight evident by $BC_{2l+1}(n)$ and $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Moreover, the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{n}{2(2l+1)}$ is $BC_{2l+1}(n)$, and the the only $n$-vertex ${\mathcal C}$-free non-bipartite graph with minimum degree $\max\{ \frac{n}{2(2l+1)}, \frac{2}{2k+3}n\}=\frac{2}{2k+3}n$ is $C_{2k+3}({n \over 2k+3})$. Our result also unifies stability results of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, Häggkvist and Yuan and Peng for large $n$.

Abstract:In the present paper, we introduce a new approach and use it to prove that the maximum number of triangles in a C5-free graph on n vertices is at most 126(1+o(1))n3/2, improving an estimate of Ergemlidze and Methuku [4]. We also show that the maximum size of an induced-C4-free and C5-free graph on n vertices is at most 16(1+o(1))n3/2, also improving an estimate of Ergemlidze and Methuku [4].
Minimizing the number of edges in $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs

Abstract:Given graphs $H_1, H_2$, a {red, blue}-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ is a critical coloring if $G$ has neither a red $H_1$ nor a blue $ H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G$ admits a critical coloring, but $G+e$ has no critical coloring for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that for all $k \ge 2 $ and $ n \ge k +\lfloor \sqrt {k-1} \rfloor +2$, if $G$ is a $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then \[e(G) \ge \frac{(k+2)n}2-3- \frac{(k-1)(k+ \lfloor \sqrt {k-2}\rfloor)}2.\] Moreover, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible for all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge3k+4$. It is worth noting that our constructions for the case when $ k$ is even have at least three different critical colorings. For $k=2$, we obtain the sharp bound for the minimum number of edges of $(C_4, K_{1,2})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge5 $ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $2n-3$ edges. Our proofs rely on the structural properties of $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs and a result of Ollmann on the minimum number of edges of $C_4$-saturated graphs.

Abstract:Win proved a well-known result that the graph G of connectivity κ ( G ) with α ( G ) ≤ κ ( G ) + k − 1 ( k ≥ 2) has a spanning k -ended tree, i.e., a spanning tree with at most k leaves. In this paper, the authors extended the Win theorem in case when κ ( G ) = 1 to the following: Let G be a simple connected graph of order large enough such that α ( G ) ≤ k + 1 ( k ≥ 3) and such that the number of maximum independent sets of cardinality k + 1 is at most n − 2 k − 2. Then G has a spanning k -ended tree.
On Convex Geometric Graphs with no $k+1$ Pairwise Disjoint Edges

Abstract:A well-known result of Kupitz from 1982 asserts that the maximal number of edges in a convex geometric graph (CGG) on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges is $kn$ (provided $n>2k$). For $k=1$ and $k=n/2-1$, the extremal examples are completely characterized. For all other values of $k$, the structure of the extremal examples is far from known: their total number is unknown, and only a few classes of examples were presented, that are almost symmetric, consisting roughly of the $kn$ "longest possible" edges of $CK(n)$, the complete CGG of order $n$. In order to understand further the structure of the extremal examples, we present a class of extremal examples that lie at the other end of the spectrum. Namely, we break the symmetry by requiring that, in addition, the graph admit an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull. We show that such graphs exist as long as $q \leq n-2k$ and that this value of $q$ is optimal. We generalize our discussion to the following question: what is the maximal possible number $f(n,k,q)$ of edges in a CGG on $n$ vertices that does not contain $k+1$ pairwise disjoint edges, and, in addition, admits an independent set that consists of $q$ consecutive vertices on the boundary of the convex hull? We provide a complete answer to this question, determining $f(n,k,q)$ for all relevant values of $n,k$ and $q$.

Highly connected graphs have highly connected spanning bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:For integers $k,n$ with $1 \le k \le n/2$, let $f(k,n)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every $t$-connected $n$-vertex graph has a spanning bipartite $k$-connected subgraph. A conjecture of Thomassen asserts that $f(k,n)$ is upper bounded by some function of $k$. The best upper bound for $f(k,n)$ is by Delcourt and Ferber who proved that $f(k,n) \le 10^{10}k^3 \log n$. Here it is proved that $f(k,n) \le 22k^2 \log n$. For larger $k$, stronger bounds hold. In the linear regime, it is proved that for any $0 < c < \frac{1}{2}$ and all sufficiently large $n$, if $k=\lfloor cn \rfloor$, then $f(k, n) \le 30\sqrt{c} n \le 30\sqrt{n(k+1)}$. In the polynomial regime, it is proved that for any $\frac{1}{3} \le \alpha < 1$ and all sufficiently large $n$, if $k = \lfloor n^\alpha \rfloor$, then $f(k ,n) \le 9n^{(1+\alpha)/2} \le 9\sqrt{n(k+1)}$.

Extremal results on degree powers in some classes of graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ with degree sequence $(d_1,d_2,\cdots,d_n)$. For an integer $p>1$, let $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d^{p}_i$ and let $ex_p(n,H)$ be the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ among all graphs with $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph (known as $H$-free graphs). Caro and Yuster proposed the problem of determining the exact value of $ex_2(n,C_4)$, where $C_4$ is the cycle of length $4$. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a $C_4$-free graph having $n\geq 4$ vertices and $m\leq \lfloor 3(n-1)/2\rfloor$ edges and no isolated vertices, then $e_p(G)\leq e_p(F_n)$, with equality if and only if $G$ is the friendship graph $F_n$. This yields that for $n\geq 4$, $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)=e_p(F_n)$ and $F_n$ is the unique extremal graph, which is an improved complement of Caro and Yuster's result on $ex_p(n,\mathcal{C}^*)$, where $\mathcal{C}^*$ denotes the family of cycles of even lengths. We also determine the maximum value of $e_p(\cdot)$ among all minimally $t$-(edge)-connected graphs with small $t$ or among all $k$-degenerate graphs, and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs. A key tool in our approach is majorization.

Maximal $k$-Edge-Connected Subgraphs in Almost-Linear Time for Small $k$

Abstract:We give the first almost-linear time algorithm for computing the \emph{maximal $k$-edge-connected subgraphs} of an undirected unweighted graph for any constant $k$. More specifically, given an $n$-vertex $m$-edge graph $G=(V,E)$ and a number $k = \log^{o(1)}n$, we can deterministically compute in $O(m+n^{1+o(1)})$ time the unique vertex partition $\{V_{1},\dots,V_{z}\}$ such that, for every $i$, $V_{i}$ induces a $k$-edge-connected subgraph while every superset $V'_{i}\supset V_{i}$ does not. Previous algorithms with linear time work only when $k\le2$ {[}Tarjan SICOMP'72{]}, otherwise they all require $\Omega(m+n\sqrt{n})$ time even when $k=3$ {[}Chechik~et~al.~SODA'17; Forster~et~al.~SODA'20{]}. Our algorithm also extends to the decremental graph setting; we can deterministically maintain the maximal $k$-edge-connected subgraphs of a graph undergoing edge deletions in $m^{1+o(1)}$ total update time. Our key idea is a reduction to the dynamic algorithm supporting pairwise $k$-edge-connectivity queries {[}Jin and Sun FOCS'20{]}.

Balanced subdivisions of a large clique in graphs with high average degree

Abstract:In 1984, Thomassen conjectured that for every constant $k \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists $d$ such that every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a complete graph on $k$ vertices, i.e. a subdivision in which each edge is subdivided the same number of times. Recently, Liu and Montgomery confirmed Thomassen's conjecture. We show that for every constant $0<c<1/2$, every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a complete graph of size at least $\Omega(d^{c})$. Note that this bound is almost optimal. Moreover, we show that every sparse expander with minimum degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a complete graph of size at least $\Omega(d)$.

Maximally Edge-Connected Realizations and Kundu's $k$-factor Theorem

Abstract:A simple graph $G$ with edge-connectivity $\lambda(G)$ and minimum degree $\delta(G)$ is maximally edge connected if $\lambda(G)=\delta(G)$. In 1964, given a non-increasing degree sequence $\pi=(d_{1},\ldots,d_{n})$, Jack Edmonds showed that there is a realization $G$ of $\pi$ that is $k$-edge-connected if and only if $d_{n}\geq k$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}d_{i}\geq 2(n-1)$ when $d_{n}=1$. We strengthen Edmonds's result by showing that given a realization $G_{0}$ of $\pi$ if $Z_{0}$ is a spanning subgraph of $G_{0}$ with $\delta(Z_{0})\geq 1$ such that $|E(Z_{0})|\geq n-1$ when $\delta(G_{0})=1$, then there is a maximally edge-connected realization of $\pi$ with $G_{0}-E(Z_{0})$ as a subgraph. Our theorem tells us that there is a maximally edge-connected realization of $\pi$ that differs from $G_{0}$ by at most $n-1$ edges. For $\delta(G_{0})\geq 2$, if $G_{0}$ has a spanning forest with $c$ components, then our theorem says there is a maximally edge-connected realization that differs from $G_{0}$ by at most $n-c$ edges. As an application we combine our work with Kundu's $k$-factor Theorem to show there is a maximally edge-connected realization with a $(k_{1},\dots,k_{n})$-factor for $k\leq k_{i}\leq k+1$ and present a partial result to a conjecture that strengthens the regular case of Kundu's $k$-factor theorem.

Spectral extremal graphs for the bowtie

Abstract:Let $F_k$ be the (friendship) graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. The $F_k$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)], and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)] under the condition that $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we get rid of the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large if $k=2$. The graph $F_2$ is also known as the bowtie. We show that the unique $n$-vertex $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the balanced complete bipartite graph adding an edge in the vertex part with smaller size if $n\ge 7$, and the condition $n\ge 7$ is tight. Our result is a spectral generalization of a theorem of Erdős, Füredi, Gould and Gunderson [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 64 (1995)], which states that $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_2)=\left\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \right\rfloor +1$. Moreover, we study the spectral extremal problem for $F_k$-free graphs with given number of edges. In particular, we show that the unique $m$-edge $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the join of $K_2$ with an independent set of $\frac{m-1}{2}$ vertices if $m\ge 8$, and the condition $m\ge 8$ is tight.

Coloring graphs with forbidden almost bipartite subgraphs

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:We prove that there exists an absolute constant C>0 such that, for any positive integer k , every graph G with minimum degree at least Ck admits a vertex‐partition V(G)=S∪T , where both G[S] and G[T] have minimum degree at least k , and every vertex in S has at least k neighbors in T . This confirms a question posted by Kühn and Osthus (J. Comb. Theory Ser. B. 88 (2003), 29–43.) and is tight up to a constant factor. Our proof combines probabilistic methods with structural arguments based on Ore's theorem on f ‐factors of bipartite graphs.
