Abstract:Understanding and exploiting the remarkable optical and electronic properties of phosphorene require mass production methods that avoid chemical degradation. While solution-based strategies have been developed for scalable exfoliation of black phosphorus, these techniques have thus far employed anhydrous organic solvents in an effort to minimize exposure to known oxidants, but at the cost of limited exfoliation yield and flake size distribution. Here, we present an alternative phosphorene production method based on surfactant-assisted exfoliation and post-processing of black phosphorus in deoxygenated water. From comprehensive microscopic and spectroscopic analysis, this approach is shown to yield phosphorene dispersions that are stable, highly concentrated, and comparable to micromechanically exfoliated phosphorene in structure and chemistry. Due to the high exfoliation efficiency of this process, the resulting phosphorene flakes are thinner than anhydrous organic solvent dispersions, thus allowing the observation of layer-dependent photoluminescence down to the monolayer limit. Furthermore, to demonstrate preservation of electronic properties following solution processing, the aqueous-exfoliated phosphorene flakes are employed in field-effect transistors with high drive currents and current modulation ratios. Overall, this method enables the isolation and mass production of few-layer phosphorene, which will accelerate ongoing efforts to realize a diverse range of phosphorene-based applications.

Abstract:Although phosphorene has attracted much attention in electronics and optoelectronics as a new type of two‐dimensional material, in‐depth investigations and applications have been limited by the current synthesis techniques. Herein, a basic N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) liquid exfoliation method is described to produce phosphorene with excellent water stability, controllable size and layer number, as well as in high yield. Phosphorene samples composed of one to four layers exhibit layer‐dependent Raman scattering characteristics thus providing a fast and efficient means for the in situ determination of the thickness (layer number) of phosphorene. The linear and nonlinear ultrafast absorption behavior of the as‐exfoliated phosphorene is investigated systematically by UV–vis–NIR absorption and Z‐scan measurements. By taking advantage of their unique nonlinear absorption, ultrashort pulse generation applicable to optical saturable absorbers is demonstrated. In addition to a unique fabrication technique, our work also reveals the large potential of phosphorene in ultrafast photonics. Abstract:Exfoliation of two-dimensional phosphorene from bulk black phosphorous through chemical means is demonstrated where the solvent system of choice (choline chloride urea diluted with ethanol) has the ability to successfully exfoliate large-area multi-layer phosphorene sheets and further protect the flakes from ambient degradation. The intercalant solvent molecules, aided by low-powered sonication, diffuse between the layers of the bulk black phosphorus, allowing for the exfoliation of the multi-layer phosphorene through breaking of the interlayer van der Waals bonds. Through viscosity tuning, the optimal parameters (1:1 ratio between the intercalant and the diluting solvent) at which the exfoliation takes place is determined. Our exfoliation technique is shown to produce multi-layer phosphorene flakes with surface areas greater than 3 μm2 (a factor of three larger than what has previously been reported for a similar exfoliation method) while limiting exposure to the ambient environment, thereby protecting the flakes from degradation. Characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and (scanning) transmission electron microscopy are used to investigate the quality, quantity, and thickness of the exfoliated flakes.

Abstract:Forthcoming applications in electronics and optoelectronics make phosphorene a subject of vigorous research efforts. Solvent-assisted exfoliation of phosphorene promises affordable delivery in industrial quantities for future applications. We demonstrate, using equilibrium, steered and umbrella sampling molecular dynamics, that the 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIM][BF4] ionic liquid is an excellent solvent for phosphorene exfoliation. The presence of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, as well as substantial shear viscosity, allows [EMIM][BF4] simultaneously to facilitate separation of phosphorene sheets and to protect them from getting in direct contact with moisture and oxygen. The exfoliation thermodynamics is moderately unfavorable, indicating that an external stimulus is necessary. Unexpectedly, [EMIM][BF4] does not coordinates phosphorene by p-electron stacking with the imidazole ring. Instead, the solvation proceeds via hydrophobic side chains, while polar imidazole rings form an electrostatically stabilized protective layer. The simulations suggest that further efforts in solvent engineering for phosphorene exfoliation should concentrate on use of weakly coordinating ions and grafting groups that promote stronger dispersion interactions, and on elongation of nonpolar chains.

Abstract:Thin layers of black phosphorus have recently raised interest for their two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting properties, such as tunable direct bandgap and high carrier mobilities. This lamellar crystal of P atoms stacked together by weak van der Waals forces can be exfoliated down to the stratophosphane monolayer (also called phosphorene) using procedures similar to those used for graphene. Properties of this 2D material are however challenging to probe due to a fast and ubiquitous degradation upon exposure to ambient conditions. Herein, we investigate the crystal degradation using in-situ Raman and transmission electron spectroscopies and highlight a process involving a photo-induced oxidation reaction with adsorbed oxygen in water. The experimental conditions to prepare and preserve mono-, bi- and multilayers of stratophosphane in their pristine states were determined. Study on these 2D layers provides new insights on the effect of confinement on the chemical reactivity and the vibrational modes of black phosphorus.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) as a rising star among 2D materials has attracted attention for a wide range of applications due to its fascinating properties. The key point for the real application of phosphorene depends on its exfoliation technique to produce high‐quality nanosheets. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been made in the preparation and energy storage application of phosphorene and phosphorene‐based hybrid electrodes. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art liquid‐based exfoliation and characterization of phosphorene fabricated by sonication, anodic and cathodic electrochemical exfoliation, and bipolar electrochemical exfoliation in diverse solutions and conditions are discussed. In addition, the electrochemical properties and storage mechanism of phosphorene‐based electrodes for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of phosphorene nanosheets in terms of exfoliation and energy storage applications are addressed. The emerged 2D black phosphorus has captured attention owing to its distinctive properties. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art liquid‐based exfoliation of black phosphorus into phosphorene nanosheets via sonication, electrochemical cathodic/anodic exfoliation, and bipolar exfoliation are comprehensively summarized. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of phosphorene‐based electrodes for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors and the challenges and opportunities for the future endeavor are highlighted.
Features of Few-Layer Phosphorene Structure Synthesis by Plasma-Assisted Electrochemical Exfoliation of Black Phosphorus

Abstract:A comparative study has been conducted on the cathode electrolysis plasma emission spectra recorded during the plasma-assisted electrochemical exfoliation of black phosphorus and graphite under maximally identical experimental conditions. It has been found that in the case of black phosphorus exfoliation, the concentration of active intermediates (OH radicals and O atoms) in electrolytic plasma is significantly lower than that in the case of the graphite electrode. It has been assumed that this effect is due to the fact that the rate of interaction of the above intermediates with the synthesized phosphorene structures is significantly higher than the rate of interaction with graphene-like particles. This assumption has been confirmed by the detection of a significantly higher oxygen content in the exfoliation products of black phosphorus than the oxygen content in the synthesized carbon nanoparticles.

Abstract:There have been continuous efforts to seek novel functional two-dimensional semiconductors with high performance for future applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we introduce a successful experimental approach to fabricate monolayer phosphorene by mechanical cleavage and a subsequent Ar+ plasma thinning process. The thickness of phosphorene is unambiguously determined by optical contrast spectra combined with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman spectroscopy is used to characterize the pristine and plasma-treated samples. The Raman frequency of the A(2g) mode stiffens, and the intensity ratio of A(2g) to A(1g) modes shows a monotonic discrete increase with the decrease of phosphorene thickness down to a monolayer. All those phenomena can be used to identify the thickness of this novel two-dimensional semiconductor. This work on monolayer phosphorene fabrication and thickness determination will facilitate future research on phosphorene.

Abstract:Single crystals of orthorhombic black phosphorus can be grown by a short way transport reaction from red phosphorus and Sn/SnI4 as mineralization additive. Sizes of several millimeters can be realized with high crystal quality and purity, making a large area preparation of single or multilayer phosphorene possible. An in situ neutron diffraction study has been performed addressing the formation of black phosphorus. Black phosphorus is formed directly via gas phase without the occurrence of any other intermediate phase. Crystal growth was initiated after cooling the starting materials down from elevated temperatures at 500 °C.

Abstract:Phosphorene, a two-dimensional (2D) monolayer of black phosphorus, has attracted considerable theoretical interest, although the experimental realization of monolayer, bilayer, and few-layer flakes has been a significant challenge. Here, we systematically survey conditions for liquid exfoliation to achieve the first large-scale production of monolayer, bilayer, and few-layer phosphorus, with exfoliation demonstrated at the 10 g scale. We describe a rapid approach for quantifying the thickness of 2D phosphorus and show that monolayer and few-layer flakes produced by our approach are crystalline and unoxidized, while air exposure leads to rapid oxidation and the production of acid. With large quantities of 2D phosphorus now available, we perform the first quantitative measurements of the material's absorption edge-which is nearly identical to the material's band gap under our experimental conditions-as a function of flake thickness. Our interpretation of the absorbance spectrum relies on an analytical method introduced in this work, allowing the accurate determination of the absorption edge in polydisperse samples of quantum-confined semiconductors. Using this method, we found that the band gap of black phosphorus increased from 0.33 ± 0.02 eV in bulk to 1.88 ± 0.24 eV in bilayers, a range that is larger than that of any other 2D material. In addition, we quantified a higher-energy optical transition (VB-1 to CB), which changes from 2.0 eV in bulk to 3.23 eV in bilayers. This work describes several methods for producing and analyzing 2D phosphorus while also yielding a class of 2D materials with unprecedented optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Liquid Phase Exfoliation (LPE) has gathered attention from both scientific and industrial communities for its accessibility and cost-effectiveness in producing graphene. However, this technique has faced challenges such as low yield and long production time. In this study, we developed a cyclic ultrasonication system to exfoliate expanded graphite (EG) by applying static pressure to a flow chamber to address these challenges. Using deionized water (DIW) as solvent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as dispersion, we obtained graphene slurries with an average lateral size of 7 μm and averaged number of layers of 3.5 layers, after 40 min of ultrasonication. After centrifugation, the yield of single and bilayer graphene was approximately 16 %. The findings showed that regulating hydrostatic pressure can effectively affect the lateral size and number of layers of few-layer graphene. The proposed method is of good potential for scaled-up production of few-layer graphene.

Abstract:Similar to graphene, few-layer black phosphorus possesses many excellent properties such as good thermal stability, mechanical properties and unique characteristic dimension effects, which is considered as promising nanoadditives. But the low yield and inferior interfacial adhesion with polymer matrix are unavoidable obstruction to fabricate high performance nanocomposites. Herein, we report a facile and environmentally friendly approach to simultaneously exfoliate and modify black phosphorus (BP) by electrochemical cathodic exfoliation, where BP crystal acted as the cathode and ethylene imine polymer (PEI) acted as electrolyte and modifier. The positively charged PEI would uniformly anchor on the surface of the newly peeled-off BP nanosheets through electrostatic attraction effect, resulting in preventing the agglomeration of BP nanosheets and improve the compatibility between BP and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) matrix. Significantly, with the addition of 2.0 wt% PEI modified BP in WPU matrix, the fire safety of WPU composites was enhanced. The peak heat-release rate, total heat release, total smoke production and total CO yield are decreased by 34.3%, 21.2%, 22.3% and 50.2% compared to pure WPU, respectively. Also, the tensile strength of WPU composites was increased by 71% (from 21.9 to 31.0 MPa) at the cost of the breaking elongation slightly decreased by 5.6%. This work provides the possibility for the scalable preparation and a real application of BP in polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:The growth of high-quality black phosphorus crystals is very important to further study the physical properties of two-dimensional black phosphorus exfoliated from bulk crystals. Herein, we designed a series of experiments to fully understand the growth of black phosphorus crystals and then explore the roles of metals (or alloys) and I elements in its growth process. Finally, we developed a general approach to grow black phosphorus in high yield with high quality and low cost. The work introduced here sheds light on the growth mechanism of black phosphorus crystals and opens up the possibility of the growth of black phosphorus thin film.

Abstract:We introduce a metal-assisted exfoliation method to produce few-layer black phosphorus with the lateral size larger than 50 mu m and the area 100 times larger than those exfoliated using the normal "scotch-tape" technique. Using a field effect transistor it was found the hole mobility is 68.6 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and the current on/off ratio can reach about 2 x 10(5).

Abstract:Semiconducting two-dimensional (2D) materials, or nanosheets, have been gaining wide attention in photocatalysis field due to their abundant active sites, short charge diffusion length, and more powerful photo-reduction/-oxidation ability than that of the bulk counterparts. The heptazine-based crystalline carbon nitride, named poly(heptazine imide) (PHI), is a polymer semiconductor being extensively investigated in the past decade. PHI nanosheets have demonstrated the superiority in photocatalytic reactions over bulk PHI, however, the current strategies to derive PHI nanosheets are generally costly, energy-consuming, as well as destructive. Herein, PHI nanosheets are sustainably and mildly synthesized by simply agitation of the bulk PHI in deionized water, which acts as both ion-exchange and stabilization agents. As-prepared PHI nanosheets exhibit significantly improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity than that of the bulk PHI under visible light irradiation. The sustainable and large-scale synthesis of PHI nanosheets was proposed to stimulate the exfoliation research of other 2D materials.

Abstract:A mild two-step method of black phosphorus (BP) flake thinning was demonstrated in this article. Slight ultraviolet–ozone (UVO) radiation followed by an argon plasma treatment was employed to oxidize mechanically exfoliated BP flakes and remove the surface remains of previous ozone treatment. The annealing process introduced aims to reduce impurities and defects. Low damage and efficient electronic devices were fabricated in terms of controlling the thickness of BP flakes through this method. These results lead to an important step toward the fabrication of high-performance devices based on two-dimensioned materials.

Abstract:Few layer black phosphorus is a new two-dimensional material which is of great interest for applications, mainly in electronics. However, its lack of stability severely limits our ability to synthesise and process this material. Here we demonstrate that high-quality, few-layer black phosphorus nanosheets can be produced in large quantities by liquid phase exfoliation in the solvent N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP). We can control nanosheet dimensions and have developed metrics to estimate both nanosheet size and thickness spectroscopically. When exfoliated in CHP, the nanosheets are remarkably stable unless water is intentionally introduced. Computational studies show the degradation to occur by reaction with water molecules only at the nanosheet edge, leading to the removal of phosphorus atoms and the formation of phosphine and phosphorous acid. We demonstrate that liquid exfoliated black phosphorus nanosheets are potentially useful in a range of applications from optical switches to gas sensors to fillers for composite reinforcement.
