Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) powered by renewable electricity has emerged as a promising approach to alleviate global warming and energy depletion simultaneously. Notably, efficient catalysts containing Earth-abundant elements to achieve high CO2RR performance are in great demand for future applications. Herein, carbon-supported gallia gel nanoparticles were synthesized by precipitating gallium nitrate on carbon black in an ethanolic ammonia solution. Nano-sized gallia nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on the carbon support achieved a maximum CO faradaic efficiency of 77.0% at -0.71 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 solution, showing a dramatic improvement compared to a bulk Ga electrode with only 24.2% CO faradaic efficiency at -0.80 V vs. RHE. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed that surface Ga3+ species were reduced to metallic Ga when subjected to a negative potential during the CO2RR, indicative of the formation of oxide-derived active gallium sites. Control experiments further highlighted the necessity of close coalescence between the nano-sized gallia particles and the conductive carbon support. The present study underscores the feasibility of improving the CO2RR performance of Ga-related materials through nanostructuring of oxide-derived gallium catalysts.
Superaerophilic copper nanowires for efficient and switchable CO 2 electroreduction.

Abstract:Copper is one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for switchable carbon dioxide conversion, but the design of an advanced Cu-based catalyst with high selectivity while suppressing hydrogen evolution remains a great challenge. Herein, we use Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) as the starting materials and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the surface modifier to make a superaerophilic electrode using a wettability control strategy. This strategy allows tuning of the selectivity of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and a decrease of the hydrogen evolution rate simultaneously by facilitating the supply of CO2 reactants and inhibiting the adsorption of water (protons). The transferring point from a pinning to bursting state turned out to be the optimized condition leading to the highest CO2RR faradaic efficiency without significant interference of current density. The optimized superaerophilic Cu NW catalyst showed CO-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 71% at -0.4 V vs. RHE and HCOOH-selectivity with a Faraday efficiency of 68% at -0.6 V vs. RHE. Moreover, the accelerated gas and ion diffusion and homogenized reactions also avoided accumulative damage on the surface of the Cu NWs and enhanced the stability of the Cu catalyst. This wettability tuning strategy provides a facile and efficient way to optimize the gas and ion diffusion layers, therefore promoting the performance of the CO2RR. This strategy potentially can be extended to the design of other gas consumption electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 to fuels or valuable chemicals is a promising way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Herein, ultrathin In2Se3 nanosheets are reported as a robust catalyst for CO2-to-CO conversion with a faradaic efficiency of 89% and a stable activity of > 24 h. Theoretical investigations show that the exposed electronegative Se atoms stabilize *COOH and, thus, facilitate CO2-to-CO conversion.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction into C2+ products not only realizes the efficient conversion and utilization of CO2, but also provides a new way to synthesize value added hydrocarbons. However, it remains a grand challenge for highly selective synthesis of C2+ product due to the complexity of CO2 reduction and the coexistence of competitive reaction on the electrode surface. Herein we report a gallium doped Cu2O catalyst (Ga/Cu2O) prepared by a typical electrochemical deposition method via oriented growth on the surface of Cu mesh with easily controllable Ga contents. As the self-supporting electrode, it exhibits a highly efficient and selective CO2 reduction into C2+ products with Faradaic efficiencies of C2+, CH3CH2OH, and CH3CH2CH2OH as high as 20%, 6.5% and 6.64%, respectively at the potential of −1.8 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Experimental results show that Ga doping generated more oxygen vacancies via partial substitution in the lattice of Cu2O, resulting in rapid separation of the generated electron-hole pairs and regulating the electronic structure of catalyst surface and promotion of CO2 adsorption and activation. As a result, a higher *CO coverage and better C-C coupling probability on the surface of Ga/Cu2O were reached compared to those of unmodified Cu2O, which are responsible for the enhancement of the selectivity of CO2RR into C2+ products.

Abstract:AbstractPrecise design and tuning of the micro‐atomic structure of single atom catalysts (SACs) can help efficiently adapt complex catalytic systems. Herein, we inventively found that when the active center of the main group element gallium (Ga) is downsized to the atomic level, whose characteristic has significant differences from conventional bulk and rigid Ga catalysts. The Ga SACs with a P, S atomic coordination environment display specific flow properties, showing CO products with FE of ≈92 % at −0.3 V vs. RHE in electrochemical CO2reduction (CO2RR). Theoretical simulations demonstrate that the adaptive dynamic transition of Ga optimizes the adsorption energy of the *COOH intermediate and renews the active sites in time, leading to excellent CO2RR selectivity and stability. This liquid single atom catalysts system with dynamic interfaces lays the foundation for future exploration of synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract:Rationally constructed catalysts for efficiently converting CO2 into valuable carbonaceous fuels like CO and formate via electrochemical process are promising for decreasing the excessive emission of CO2. Thus, electrocatalysts with a large turnover frequency (TOF) for CO and formate are highly desirable. To this end, multimetallic nanoclusters (NCs) with unique electronic structure, large specific surface and abundant active sites are favorable theoretically. However, their structural complexity and challenging synthesis impede the application in CO2 electroreduction. Herein, negatively charged multi-metallic sulfide supertetrahedral NCs-based nanoparticles, containing Cu, Ga, In and Sn four metal components, were for the first time electrostatically self-assembled with positively charged multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to fabricate a novel 0D/1D heterostructure that exhibits efficient CO2 electroreduction to C-1 products (CO + HCOOH) with high Faradaic efficiency (FE) (>80%), excellent TOF (5974.62 h(-1)) and good long-term stability (12 h). Besides, a ratio-tunable syngas (CO + H-2) (V-CO/V-H2: 0.1 similar to 2.73) and efficient electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) could also be achieved for the hybrid catalyst. Comparative experiments figured out the favorable synergistic effects of co-existed Ga and In ions and enhanced interfacial charge-transfer were responsible for the promoted CO2 electroreduction activity.
Highly selective and active Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO

Abstract:The Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite was prepared by a simple solid-phase reduction method. The introduction of In2O3 into Cu/C to form the Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite evidently enhances the electrocatalytic activity for the selective reduction of CO2 to CO. Specifically, the Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite exhibits higher Faraday efficiency (FE = 86.7%) at -0.48 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and larger current densities (55 mA cm-2) under a low overpotential (-1.08 V vs. RHE). These indicate its superior performance over many of the reported Cu-based catalysts [1-4]. It was also found that by rationally adjusting the applied potential, tunable syngas can be formed, which can be used to synthesize formic acid, methyl ether, methanol, synthetic fuels, or other bulk chemicals through appropriate industrial processes. Furthermore, the Cu-In2O3/C nanocomposite maintains good stability in the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. This work demonstrates a novel strategy to convert CO2 into desired products with high energy efficiency and large current density under low overpotential by the rational designing of non-precious metal catalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) to obtain formate is a promising method to consume CO2 and alleviate the energy crisis. Indium-based electrocatalysts have demonstrated considerable potential to produce formate. However, their unsatisfactory long-term stability and selectivity restrict their widespread application. In this study, a heterostructure of GaN- and In2O3-encapsulated porous carbon nanofibers was constructed via electrospinning and the phase transition of eutectic gallium-indium during calcination. The GaN and In2O3 nanoparticle-encapsulated porous carbon nanofibers, when used as electrocatalysts for eCO2RR, displayed high formate selectivity with a faradaic efficiency of 87% and maximum partial current density of 29.7 mA cm−2 in a 0.5 mol L−1 KHCO3 aqueous solution. The existence of the interface can cause a positive shift in the In 3d binding energy, leading to electronic redistribution. Moreover, the GaN component induced a higher proportion of O-vacancy sites in the In2O3 phase, resulting in improved selectivity for CO2-to-formate. In-situ Raman experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed that the interface between GaN and In2O3 could lower the adsorption energy of the key intermediates for formate production, thus providing superior eCO2RR performance. In addition, the framework of the porous carbon nanofibers exhibited a large electrochemically active surface area, which enabled the full exposure of the active sites. This study highlights the cooperation between GaN and In2O3 components and provides new insights into the rational design of catalysts with high CO2-to-formate conversion efficiencies.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into multicarbon (C2) products on Cu-based catalysts is strongly affected by the surface coverage of adsorbed CO (*CO) intermediates and the subsequent C-C coupling. However, the increased *CO coverage inevitably leads to strong *CO repulsion and a reduced C-C coupling efficiency, thus resulting in suboptimal CO2-to-C2 activity and selectivity, especially at ampere-level electrolysis current densities. Herein, we developed an atomically ordered Cu9Ga4 intermetallic compound consisting of Cu square-like binding sites interspaced by catalytically inert Ga atoms. Compared to Cu(100) previously known with a high C2 selectivity, the Ga-spaced, square-like Cu sites presented an elongated Cu-Cu distance that allowed to reduce *CO repulsion and increased *CO coverage simultaneously, thus endowing more efficient C-C coupling to C2 products than Cu(100) and Cu(111). The Cu9Ga4 catalyst exhibited an outstanding CO2-to-C2 electroreduction, with a peak C2 partial current density of 1207 mA cm-2 and a corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 71%. Moreover, the Cu9Ga4 catalyst demonstrated a high-power (∼200 W) electrolysis capability with excellent electrochemical stability.

Abstract:Silver electrocatalysts offer the possibility to produce CO by converting CO2, enabling the use of a greenhouse gas as chemical building block. Compared to nanoparticles, silver nanowires show an enhanced selectivity towards CO. Recent publications proved that oxide‐derived electrocatalysts can exhibit better catalytic performance than the pristine metal phase, but oxide‐derived silver nanowires have not been investigated. In this work, we report for the first time the electrocatalytic properties of silver nanowires, synthesized via the polyol method, and pretreated by electrochemical oxidation in basic electrolyte. By increasing the oxidation potential, both the percentage of AgxO and the surface roughness of the catalyst were progressively increased. The most oxidized sample showed a remarkably improved CO selectivity (‐294.2 mA m‐2Ag), producing a 3.3‐fold larger CO partial current density than the pristine sample (‐89.4 mA m‐2Ag), normalized by electrochemically active silver surface area. This work demonstrates the beneficial effect of the controlled oxidation treatment even on highly selective nanostructures such as silver nanowires.

Abstract:Pursuing both high effective and selective electrocatalysts is significant for efficient and low-cost electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. Here, we design a novel bimetallic alloy/oxide nanowire catalyst with core-shell configuration. A typical CuSn alloy core provides high electrical conductivity while the amorphous Cu doped SnO2 shell guarantees the catalytic activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction process. Computational studies further elucidate the important role of Cu doped SnO2 layer in the electrocatalytic selectivity for formate and the restraint of hydrogen production. Benefited from the well-designed components and hierarchical configuration, the as-prepared electrocatalyst displays a partial current density of 30 mA cm−2 with a Faradaic efficiency of 78 % at −0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) for formate. This work provides a new pathway to design advanced electrocatalyst for CO2 electrochemical reduction.

Abstract:The development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts with high performance for electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) is of great significance. Cu-based catalysts have been widely investigated for ECR due to their unique ability to generate various carbonaceous products, but directing selectivity toward one certain product and identifying the real active sites during ECR are still full of challenge. Here, after the incorporation of CdO into CuO, the Cu 0.5 Cd 0.5 -O catalyst achieves a 10.3-fold enhancement for CO selectivity in comparison with CuO, and a CO faradic efficiency nearly 90% with a current density around 20 mA cm −2 could maintain at least 60 h. Interestingly, a wide CO/H 2 ratio (0.07–10) is reached on Cu x Cd 1− x -O catalysts by varying the Cu/Cd ratio, demonstrating the potential of syngas production using such catalysts. The results of ex situ XRD, XPS, and in situ Raman reveal that the real active sites of Cu 0.5 Cd 0.5 -O catalysts for CO production during ECR reaction are the reconstructed mixed phases of CuCd alloy and CdCO 3 . In situ FTIR and theoretical calculations further implicate the presence of Cd related species promotes the CO desorption and inhibits the H 2 evolution, thus leading to an enhanced CO generation.

Abstract:Developing efficient, selective, and stable single-atom electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is attractive but still remains a challenging, especially for scalable production with low-cost. Among the non-precious metal single-atom electrocatalysts, Cu single-atom electrocatalysts are rarely explored for the efficient CO2-to-CO conversion. Herein, we reported a facile and scalable strategy to prepare the Cu single-atom catalyst (Cu SAs/NC) with exceptional CO production performances. Atomically dispersed Cu–N4 moieties are unambiguously verified by HAADF-STEM and XANES measurements. The as-prepared Cu SAs/NC catalyst delivers a high CO faradaic efficiency of 92% at −0.7 VRHE as well as the excellent durability over 30 h successive electrolysis. It should be noted that this is one of the rare examples of efficient CO production on Cu single-atom electrocatalyst. Besides, the 20-g + samples can be readily fabricated in one batch and exhibit the almost identical CO2RR performances. Furthermore, the combined experimental and theoretical calculation results identify the genuine active Cu–N4 sites are responsible for the high selectivity and efficiency of CO production. This work provides a novel strategy for scalable single-atom electrocatalysts in stable quality and offers new insights into the efficient CO2-to-CO conversion on Cu single-atom electrocatalyst.

Oxidation-induced Restructuring of Copper Sulfides for Enhanced Performance in CO2 Electroreduction

Abstract:The CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2ER) is a reliable pathway that enables a balanced carbon cycle for sustainable development strategies. There are several major challenges, such as selectivity, efficiency, and stability of the electrocatalysts that need to be addressed for the widespread application of this in the reduction of CO2. Herein, we develop an oxide-modification of Cu1.81S particles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites (Cu1.81S@WMCNT-600-OD) through a facile in-situ crystallization strategy. This modification improves the electroreduction activity in the reduction CO2 to formate with a low onset-potential of -0.47 V vs RHE (overpotential = 0.25 V). In addition, the material used in preparing this catalyst is widely accessible at low cost. Among the electrocatalysts tested, Cu1.81S@WMCNT-600-OD exhibits a high CO2 selectivity towards formate at an overpotential of 0.45 V with high faradaic efficiency (82 %) for nearly 20 h. Further investigations reveal that the needle-like dendritic structure formed during electrolysis is the likely source for the improved performance in CO2 reduction. Therefore, this work provides low-cost, abundant, and efficient catalysts for CO2ER and a facile pathway that improves the electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 into high-value chemicals and fuels driven is an effective way to alleviate the environmental crisis, but it suffers from poor activity and low selectivity of the catalyst. Single-atom catalysts have excellent selectivity and the highest atomic efficiency, and are widely used in the 2-electron transfer to produce CO. However, electroreduction of CO2 to C2+ products involves complex processes such as multi-electron reaction and competitive adsorption, so single-atom catalysis is often powerless. Herein, a single-atom Ga-anchored F-doped Cu2O catalyst with dual active sites is reported. The Lewis acid-base pairs and Ga single atom sites promote the adsorption/activation of CO2 and the dissociation of water molecules, respectively, enhance the coverage of *CO and *H, and their synergy optimizes the reaction path. At a high current density of 600 mA cm(-2), the FEC2+ reached 72.8 +/- 3.2% with remarkable stability. Experiments and theory calculations demonstrate that the dual sites increase the coverage of *CO and *H, and the key intermediate *CO is transformed into *CHO through protonation reaction, which changes the reaction path from the C & horbar;C coupling (*OCCO) to the protonation followed by C & horbar;C coupling (*OCCHO) with low energy barrier, greatly improving the selectivity for C2+ products.

Abstract:Engineering active grain boundaries (GBs) in oxide-derived (OD) electrocatalysts is critical to improve the selectivity in CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), which is becoming an increasingly important pathway for renewable energy storage and usage. Different from traditional in situ electrochemical reduction under CO2RR conditions, where some metal oxides are converted into active metallic phases but with decreased GB densities, here we introduce the Li electrochemical tuning (LiET) method to controllably reduce the oxide precursors into interconnected ultrasmall metal nanoparticles with enriched GBs. By using ZnO as a case study, we demonstrate that the LiET-Zn with freshly exposed GBs exhibits a CO2-to-CO partial current of similar to 23 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of -948 mV, representing a 5-fold improvement from the OD-Zn with GBs eliminated during the in situ electro-reduction process. A maximal CO Faradaic efficiency of similar to 91.1% is obtained by LiET-Zn on glassy carbon substrate. The CO2-to-CO mechanism and interfacial chemistry are further probed at the molecular level by advanced in situ spectroelectrochemical technique, where the reaction intermediate of carboxyl species adsorbed on LiET-Zn surface is revealed.

Abstract:AbstractA considerable challenge in the conversion of carbon dioxide into useful fuels comes from the activation of CO2 to CO2.− or other intermediates, which often requires precious‐metal catalysts, high overpotentials, and/or electrolyte additives (e.g., ionic liquids). We report a microwave heating strategy for synthesizing a transition‐metal chalcogenide nanostructure that efficiently catalyzes CO2 electroreduction to carbon monoxide (CO). We found that the cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoneedle arrays exhibit an unprecedented current density of 212 mA cm−2 with 95.5±4.0 % CO Faraday efficiency at −1.2 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE; without iR correction). Experimental and computational studies show that the high‐curvature CdS nanostructured catalyst has a pronounced proximity effect which gives rise to large electric field enhancement, which can concentrate alkali‐metal cations resulting in the enhanced CO2 electroreduction efficiency.
