Abstract:In this paper, we study the linearized MHD equations around a steady flowing plasma with the velocity field (k(f)y, 0) and magnetic field (k(m)y, 0). We prove the spectral stability of the linearized operator conjectured in [M. Hirota, T. Tatsuno, and Z. Yoshida, Physics of Plasmas, 12 (2005), 012107] and confirm the destruction phenomena of a magnetic island observed in that work in the case when flow shear exceeds magnetic shear(0 < vertical bar k(m)vertical bar < vertical bar k(f)vertical bar). The key ingredient of the proof is the resolvent estimate of the pressure. To this end, we have to overcome two main difficulties: coalescence of singularities and exclusion of embedding eigenvalues.

Abstract:The interaction between a magnetized ion and two monochromatic shear Alfven waves propagating obliquely to an ambient magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. According to the Hamiltonian of this system, the invariant of motion at the lowest order and the half-island widths at the corresponding resonances are obtained analytically using the Lie transformation method. It is shown that these theoretical results agree with the numerical ones from the Poincare surface of section. The regular motions from the invariant and the transition to stochasticity due to resonance overlapping are demonstrated. Compared to the case of a single wave, there may be a lower stochastic threshold in the multiple-wave problem.

Abstract:The radial structure of the shear Alfvén wave continuous spectrum is calculated inside the separatrix of a magnetic island. We find that, within a magnetic island, there is a continuous spectrum very similar to that of tokamak plasmas, where a generalized safety factor q can be defined and a wide frequency gap is formed, analogous to the ellipticity induced Alfvén eigenmode gap in tokamaks. This is due to the strong eccentricity of the island cross section. In this gap, a magnetic-island induced Alfvén eigenmode (MIAE) can exist as a bound state, essentially free of continuum damping, which can be resonantly excited by energetic particles and interact nonlinearly with the magnetic island. Because of the frequency dependence of the shear Alfvén wave continuum on the magnetic-island size, the possibility of utilizing MIAE frequency scalings as a novel magnetic-island diagnostic is also discussed.

Abstract:We calculate Alfv\'en eigenmodes within a magnetic island (MiAE) which have been conjectured over a decade ago. Starting from a cylindrical plasma equilibrium, we calculate the complete metric of the island interior assuming an iota profile with a constant shear for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) parameters. Then, we solve the resulting magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations inside the island optionally considering finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. We find various eigenmodes in the lowest gaps for . The eigenmode with the lowest frequency shows a weakly non-linear dependence on the island width. This non-linear behaviour and the appearance of odd and even modes deviates qualitatively from an earlier frequency estimate.

Abstract:Nonlinear evolution of magnetic islands produced by time-dependent magnetic reconnection in the magnetopause current sheet is studied. It is shown that the magnetic islands are unstable against the interference from external disturbances. Their structure can be destroyed by medium and small-scale solar wind turbulences, leading to stochastic magnetic reconnection and the formation of irregular small-scale structures in magnetospheric boundary regions.

Abstract:In an idealized system where four current channels interact in a two-dimensional periodic setting, we follow the detailed evolution of current sheets (CSs) forming in between the channels, as a result of a large-scale merging. A central X-point collapses and a gradually extending CS marks the site of continuous magnetic reconnection. Using grid-adaptive, non-relativistic, resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, we establish that slow, near-steady Sweet-Parker reconnection transits to a chaotic, multi-plasmoid fragmented state, when the Lundquist number exceeds about ten to the fourth power, well in the range of previous studies on plasmoid instability. The extreme resolution employed in the MHD study shows significant magnetic island substructures. With relativistic test-particle simulations, we explore how charged particles can be accelerated in the vicinity of an O-point, either at embedded tiny-islands within larger "monster"-islands or near the centers of monster-islands. While the planar MHD setting artificially causes strong acceleration in the ignored third direction, it also allows for the full analytic study of all aspects leading to the acceleration and the in-plane-projected trapping of particles in the vicinities of O-points. Our analytic approach uses a decomposition of the particle velocity in slow- and fast-changing components, akin to the Reynolds decomposition in turbulence studies. Our analytic description is validated with several representative test-particle simulations. We find that after an initial non-relativistic motion throughout a monster island, particles can experience acceleration in the vicinity of an O-point beyond 0.7c, at which speed the acceleration is at its highest efficiency

Abstract:Influences of sub-Alfvénic shear flows on the nonlinear evolution of the magnetic reconnection are studied in the framework of compressible resistive MHD and compressible Hall MHD. It is found for the first time that the sub-Alfvénic shear flow can either stabilize or destabilize magnetic reconnection, which is mainly determined by the plasma beta and the half thickness of the shear flow (λv). The shear flow exhibits a suppressing effect on magnetic reconnection and the boosting effect nearly disappears for the beta plasma β ≲1, which is associated with the presence of a pair of discontinuities in the upper and lower inflow region. The shear flow has the boosting effect on magnetic reconnection when the half thickness of the shear flow exceeds a critical value in the high beta plasma which is in a good agreement with the results from incompressible simulation. With the inclusion of the Hall effect, shear flow can still either stabilize or destabilize magnetic reconnection, but the boosting effect becomes weaker as the ion inertial length di increases.

Abstract:The topology of the vortex flow associated with the magnetic island plays a significant role in modulating the turbulent transport near the magnetic island. In this paper, self-consistent nonlinear simulations of multi-scale interactions among large scale tearing mode, vortex flow, and small scale ion temperature-gradient (ITG) mode are numerically investigated based on the five-field Landau-fluid model. We found that the coherent vortex flow in a magnetic island has different parities in the nonlinear quasi-steady state, and this can be described by a theoretical framework-nonlinear parity instability. In the ITG stable case, the structure of the vortex flow bifurcates from tearing parity to twisting parity, which is characterized by modulational parity instability, modeled by a four-wave nonlinear coupling process. In the ITG unstable case, the vortex flow stays in tearing parity without parity bifurcation, and the energy is transferred from the twisting parity modes to the tearing parity modes. The impact of the parity instability on the magnetic island width is discussed as well.

Abstract:Experimental observation and theoretical analysis are presented for the nonlinear mode couplings between shear Alfven wave and magnetic island. In the sub-Alfven frequency range, two kind axi-symmetry magnetic activities with n = 0 have been observed during NBI on HL-2A. One kind has been identified, and belongs to EGAM. Another kind is found for the first time, its frequency lies in the range of TAE frequency. The Fourier bicoherence analysis suggests these axi-symmetry modes are generated by the nonlinear mode coupling via the decay process between Alfven eigenmodes and low-frequency MHD modes. The experimental results indicate that the nonlinear mode coupling is one of mechanisms of the energy cascade in energetic-particle turbulence or Alfven turbulence. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:Abstract As ubiquitous structures in magnetized fusion plasmas, magnetic islands (MIs) would short-circuit adjacent magnetic flux surfaces and result in a reduced pressure gradient and fluctuations inside the island; it is widely accepted that due to the stabilizing of drift wave instability, the turbulence intensity inside MIs is much lower for larger islands. Here, we provide the first observations that strong turbulence could be generated inside a large radiation MI, which is probably driven by the electron temperature dip due to strongly localized impurity radiation. Moreover, the flow velocity inside the MI is strongly correlated with the turbulence intensity, and the impurity concentration rate suddenly increases as the flow velocity reaches a threshold value, strongly suggesting that turbulence and flow inside the island play important roles in trapping heavy impurities and sustaining radiative MIs.

Abstract:In the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics, a one-dimensional problem of linear Alfvén waves propagation is considered in a stationary flow of inhomogeneous plasma along straight uniform magnetic field. Four families of flows are found, in which accelerated and retarded by the flow waves of arbitrary shape can propagate independently of each other, that is, without reflection. It is shown that in two of these families both waves have a similar structure, but in the other two their structures differ significantly.

Analytical model of plasma response to external magnetic perturbation in absence of no-slip condition

Abstract:Recent simulation and experimental results suggest that the magnetic island and flow on resonant surface often do not satisfy the "no-slip" condition in the steady state. A new theory model on nonlinear plasma response to external magnetic perturbation in absence of no-slip condition is proposed. The model is composed of the equations for the evolution of both width and phase of magnetic island due to forced reconnection driven by the external magnetic perturbation, and the force-balance equation for the plasma flow. When the island width is much less than the resistive layer width, the island growth is governed by the linear Hahm-Kulsrud-Taylor solution in presence of time-dependent plasma flow. In the other regime when the island width is much larger than the resistive layer width, the evolution of both island width and phase can be described using the Rutherford theory. The island solution is used to construct the quasi-linear electromagnetic force, which together with viscous one, contributes to the nonlinear variation in plasma flow. The no-slip condition assumed in the conventional error field theory is not imposed here, where the island oscillation frequency depends on but does not necessarily equal to the plasma flow frequency at the rational surface.

Abstract:The nonlinear dynamics of magnetic tearing islands imbedded in a pressure gradient driven turbulence is investigated numerically in a reduced magnetohydrodynamic model. The study reveals regimes where the linear and nonlinear phases of the tearing instability are controlled by the properties of the pressure gradient. In these regimes, the interplay between the pressure and the magnetic flux determines the dynamics of the saturated state. A secondary instability can occur and strongly modify the magnetic island dynamics by triggering a poloidal rotation. It is shown that the complex nonlinear interaction between the islands and turbulence is nonlocal and involves small scales.

Abstract:A numerical study on the influence of plasma viscosity and of the plasma beta(=kinetic pressure/magnetic pressure) parameter on the nonlinear evolution of resistive internal kink modes in tokamak plasmas is presented. A new regime with relatively low viscosity is found, such that sawtooth oscillations spontaneously evolve towards states with stationarym/n=1 magnetic islands. It is suggested that the mechanism at work in the limit of small viscosity is related to magnetic flux pumping, which, allied with the nonlinear resistive internal kink dynamics, leads to a stationary helical flow, only weakly dissipated by viscosity and entirely self-consistent with the presence of saturatedm/n=1 stationary magnetic islands. It is also found that the threshold viscosity value for the onset of the steady-state regime increases with increasing beta m/n=1 magnetic island may be relevant for the understanding of tokamak experiments, where saturated helical structures such as the density snake and steady-state magnetic islands are sometimes observed in the core plasma region where the safety factor is close to or below unity.

Abstract:The shear Alfv én continuum spectrum is studied for a tokamak with a single island chain using the ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory. We have taken into account the toroidal geometry and toroidal mode coupling with the island considered as a highly-shaped stellarator. Various new frequency gaps open up inside the island due to its asymmetry both poloidally and toroidally, such as the Mirror-induced Alfv én Eigenmode (MAE) gap and the Helicity-induced Alfv én Eigenmode (HAE) gap. We have shown that the MAE gap acts as the continuation of the outside Toroidal Alfv én Eigenmode (TAE) gap into the island. However, the combined TAE/MAE gap is getting narrower as the island grows, leaving only half of its original width with a moderate island size as much as 3.2% of the minor radius. In addition, the two-dimensional eigenfunction of the continuum mode on the lower tip of the MAE gap now has highly localised structures around the island's long axis, contrary to the usual oscillatory global solutions found with no or a low level of toroidal asymmetry - an indication of the continuous spectrum becoming discrete and dense. These results have implications for the frequency, mode structure and continuum damping of global TAEs residing in the gap.

Abstract:The presence of a chain of magnetic islands, produced by externally applied tri-dimensional fields at a rational surface, is numerically found to have significant effects on the resonant response, as well as on the associated toroidal torques, in a toroidal tokamak plasma with conventional aspect ratio, strong shaping, and in the regime of slow toroidal flow. With an ad hoc assumption of the local flattening of the equilibrium pressure profile by the islands, it is found that the primary effect is the increasing of the resonant response by islands, at slow flow, due to the reduction of the favourable average curvature effect. This also leads to the reduction of the toroidal torques, in particular that associated with the neoclassical toroidal viscosity. Partial or complete flattening of the local pressure profile, depending on the island size, results in partial or full recovering of the so called constant-. plasma response regime. Computational results are well fitted by analytic models for the two extreme cases: the case of complete flattening and the case of no flattening of the local pressure.

Abstract:The characteristics of ion-scale turbulence in the presence of a magnetic island are numerically investigated using a gyrokinetic model in fusion plasma. We observe that in the absence of the usual ion temperature gradient (ITG) drive gradient, a magnetic island and its flatten effect could drive ITG instability. The magnetic island (MI) not only drives high- n modes of ITG instability but also induces low- n modes of vortex flow. Moreover, as the magnetic island width increases, the width of the vortex flow also increases. This implies that wider islands may more easily induce vortex flows. The study further indicates that the saturated amplitude and transport level of MI-induced ITG turbulence vary with different magnetic island widths. In general, larger magnetic islands enhance both particle and heat transport. When the magnetic island width reaches to 21 ρ i , the turbulence-driven transport becomes the same level with the cases that ITG is driven by pressure gradients. Our findings indicate the presence of intricate nonlinear effects in the modulation of plasma turbulence by MIs. These effects are of significant importance for comprehending the phenomenon of nonlinear coupling in forthcoming tokamaks such as ITER.

Abstract:Alfven waves discovered by Hannes Alfven (1942, Nature 150 405) are fundamental electromagnetic oscillations prevalent in magnetically confined plasmas existing in the nature and laboratories. Alfven waves play important roles in the heating, stability, and transport of magnetized plasmas. The anisotropic nearly incompressible shear Alfven wave is particularly interesting since, due to inhomogeneities and geometries in realistic plasmas, its wave spectra consist of both the regular discrete and the singular continuous components. In this paper, we will discuss interesting features of the spectral properties of Alfven waves, spontaneous wave excitations via resonance with supra-thermal particles, and nonlinear physics issues dealing with both wave-particle as well as wave-wave interactions.
