Abstract:The radial structure of the shear Alfvén wave continuous spectrum is calculated inside the separatrix of a magnetic island. We find that, within a magnetic island, there is a continuous spectrum very similar to that of tokamak plasmas, where a generalized safety factor q can be defined and a wide frequency gap is formed, analogous to the ellipticity induced Alfvén eigenmode gap in tokamaks. This is due to the strong eccentricity of the island cross section. In this gap, a magnetic-island induced Alfvén eigenmode (MIAE) can exist as a bound state, essentially free of continuum damping, which can be resonantly excited by energetic particles and interact nonlinearly with the magnetic island. Because of the frequency dependence of the shear Alfvén wave continuum on the magnetic-island size, the possibility of utilizing MIAE frequency scalings as a novel magnetic-island diagnostic is also discussed.

Abstract:We calculate Alfv\'en eigenmodes within a magnetic island (MiAE) which have been conjectured over a decade ago. Starting from a cylindrical plasma equilibrium, we calculate the complete metric of the island interior assuming an iota profile with a constant shear for Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) parameters. Then, we solve the resulting magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations inside the island optionally considering finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. We find various eigenmodes in the lowest gaps for . The eigenmode with the lowest frequency shows a weakly non-linear dependence on the island width. This non-linear behaviour and the appearance of odd and even modes deviates qualitatively from an earlier frequency estimate.

Abstract:The interaction between a magnetized ion and two monochromatic shear Alfven waves propagating obliquely to an ambient magnetic field is investigated both analytically and numerically. According to the Hamiltonian of this system, the invariant of motion at the lowest order and the half-island widths at the corresponding resonances are obtained analytically using the Lie transformation method. It is shown that these theoretical results agree with the numerical ones from the Poincare surface of section. The regular motions from the invariant and the transition to stochasticity due to resonance overlapping are demonstrated. Compared to the case of a single wave, there may be a lower stochastic threshold in the multiple-wave problem.

Abstract:The shear Alfv én continuum spectrum is studied for a tokamak with a single island chain using the ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) theory. We have taken into account the toroidal geometry and toroidal mode coupling with the island considered as a highly-shaped stellarator. Various new frequency gaps open up inside the island due to its asymmetry both poloidally and toroidally, such as the Mirror-induced Alfv én Eigenmode (MAE) gap and the Helicity-induced Alfv én Eigenmode (HAE) gap. We have shown that the MAE gap acts as the continuation of the outside Toroidal Alfv én Eigenmode (TAE) gap into the island. However, the combined TAE/MAE gap is getting narrower as the island grows, leaving only half of its original width with a moderate island size as much as 3.2% of the minor radius. In addition, the two-dimensional eigenfunction of the continuum mode on the lower tip of the MAE gap now has highly localised structures around the island's long axis, contrary to the usual oscillatory global solutions found with no or a low level of toroidal asymmetry - an indication of the continuous spectrum becoming discrete and dense. These results have implications for the frequency, mode structure and continuum damping of global TAEs residing in the gap.

Abstract:Experimental observation and theoretical analysis are presented for the nonlinear mode couplings between shear Alfven wave and magnetic island. In the sub-Alfven frequency range, two kind axi-symmetry magnetic activities with n = 0 have been observed during NBI on HL-2A. One kind has been identified, and belongs to EGAM. Another kind is found for the first time, its frequency lies in the range of TAE frequency. The Fourier bicoherence analysis suggests these axi-symmetry modes are generated by the nonlinear mode coupling via the decay process between Alfven eigenmodes and low-frequency MHD modes. The experimental results indicate that the nonlinear mode coupling is one of mechanisms of the energy cascade in energetic-particle turbulence or Alfven turbulence. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:We present a general theoretical framework for discussing the physics of low frequency fluctuation spectra of shear Alfven and acoustic waves in toroidal plasmas of fusion interest. This framework helps identifying the relevant dynamics and, thus, interpreting experimental observations. We also discuss the roles of such general theoretical framework for verification and validation of numerical simulation codes vs. analytic predictions and experimental results.

Abstract:Magnetic islands are the regions enclosed by magnetic field lines and separated by reconnection points. In this paper, we study the long-time behavior of the solution for the linearized MHD system around the linearly stable, steady flowing plasma with sheared velocity and magnetic field. As a consequence, we prove that for a class of initial data, the magnetic islands appear at the final state.

Abstract:Shear Alfven waves (SAW) are electromagnetic oscillations prevalent in laboratory and nature magnetized plasmas. Due to their anisotropic nature, it is well known that the linear wave propagation and dispersiveness of SAW are fundamentally affected by plasma nonuniformities and magnetic field geometries, such as the existence of continuous spectrum, spectral gaps, and discrete eigenmodes in toroidal plasmas. This work discusses the pure Alfvenic state and demonstrates the crucial roles that finite ion compressibility, non-ideal kinetic effects, and geometry play in breaking it and, thereby, the nonlinear physics of SAW wave-wave interactions. Abstract:Axisymmetric Alfvén continuous spectra are derived using the ideal MHD equations. The usual toroidal coupling effect due to the variation of the magnetic field strength is neglected, but the curvature coupling of the pressure fluctuation and the geodesic compressional effect are included. The cylindrical continuous spectrum of Alfvén waves splits into two branches due to these effects. The frequency separation of the two m = 2 branches is much smaller than that of the two m = 1 branches. It is likely that the experimentally observed modes with smaller frequency separation are related to the two m = 1 continuum branches, while the modes with large frequency separation have different poloidal numbers.

Abstract:Alfven waves discovered by Hannes Alfven (1942, Nature 150 405) are fundamental electromagnetic oscillations prevalent in magnetically confined plasmas existing in the nature and laboratories. Alfven waves play important roles in the heating, stability, and transport of magnetized plasmas. The anisotropic nearly incompressible shear Alfven wave is particularly interesting since, due to inhomogeneities and geometries in realistic plasmas, its wave spectra consist of both the regular discrete and the singular continuous components. In this paper, we will discuss interesting features of the spectral properties of Alfven waves, spontaneous wave excitations via resonance with supra-thermal particles, and nonlinear physics issues dealing with both wave-particle as well as wave-wave interactions.

Abstract:Fundamental wave and stability properties of shear Alfven waves in nonuniform axisymmetric toroidal plasmas are reviewed. Using a slab model with nonuniform density, concepts such as continuous spectrum, resonant absorption, and linear mode conversion to kinetic Alfven wave are first discussed. We then analyze the formation of frequency gaps in the continuous spectrum due to the finite toroidicity-induced coupling between the poloidal harmonics in an axisymmetric torus. Existence of discrete eigenmodes both inside the frequency gap and the continuous spectra are further demonstrated. Kinetic excitations of collective toroidal shear Alfven instabilities via resonances with energetic particles are also reviewed; first in the one-dimensional radially local Limit and then with a full two-dimensional global analysis. Effects due to the non-perturbative nature of the energetic-particle drive and the global extent of the eigenmodes are emphasized.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate the existence of unstable ion temperature gradient driven Alfven eigenmodes in tokamak plasmas, which are ideally stable with respect to magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Conditions for the destabilization of such modes are quantitatively discussed on the basis of theoretical analyses of the mode dispersion relation, which is given in a compact analytical form. It is emphasized that instability requires both sufficiently strong thermal ion temperature gradients and that the plasma be sufficiently close to ideal MHD marginal stability.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the linearized MHD equations around a steady flowing plasma with the velocity field (k(f)y, 0) and magnetic field (k(m)y, 0). We prove the spectral stability of the linearized operator conjectured in [M. Hirota, T. Tatsuno, and Z. Yoshida, Physics of Plasmas, 12 (2005), 012107] and confirm the destruction phenomena of a magnetic island observed in that work in the case when flow shear exceeds magnetic shear(0 < vertical bar k(m)vertical bar < vertical bar k(f)vertical bar). The key ingredient of the proof is the resolvent estimate of the pressure. To this end, we have to overcome two main difficulties: coalescence of singularities and exclusion of embedding eigenvalues.

Abstract:Ideal and resistive MHD equations for the shear Alfvén waves are studied in a low-β toroidal model by employing the high-n ballooning formalism. The ion sound effects are neglected. For an infinite shear slab, the ideal MHD model gives rise to acontinuous spectrum of real frequencies and discrete eigenmodes (Alfvén-Landau modes) with complex frequencies. With toroidal coupling effects due to nonuniform toroidal magnetic field, the continuum is broken up into small continuum bands and new discrete toroidal eigenmodes can exist inside the continuum gaps. Unstable ballooning eigenmodes are also introduced by the bad curvature when β > βc. The resistivity (η) can be considered perturbatively for the ideal modes. In addition, four branches of resistive modes are induced by the resistivity: (1) resistive entropy modes which are stable with frequencies going to zero with resistivity as η13; (2) tearing modes which are stable (Δ′ < 0) with frequencies approaching zero as η35; (3) resistive periodic shear Alfvén waves which approach the finite frequency end points of the continuum bands as η12; and (4) resistive ballooning modes which are purely growing with growth rate proportional to η13β23 as η → 0 and β → 0.

Alfven waves play important roles in the heating, stability and transport of plasmas. In this Alfven lecture, I will discuss these spectral properties and examine their significant linear and nonlinear physics implications. These discussions will be based on perspectives from my own research in both space and laboratory fusion plasmas, and will demonstrate the positive feedback and cross-fertilization between these two important sub-disciplines of plasma physics research. Some open issues of nonlinear Alfven wave physics in burning fusion as well as magnetospheric space plasmas will also be explored.

Abstract:Shear Alfven waves (SAW) play fundamental roles in thermonuclear plasmas of fusion interest, since they are readily excited by energetic particles in the MeV range as well as by the thermal plasma components. Thus, understanding fluctuation induced transport in burning plasmas requires understanding nonlinear SAW physics. There exist two possible routes to nonlinear SAW physics: (i) wave-wave interactions and the resultant spectral energy transfer; (ii) nonlinear wave-particle interactions of SAW instabilities with energetic particles. Within the first route, it is advantageous to understand and describe nonlinear processes in term of proximity of the system to the Alfvenic state, where wave-wave interactions are minimized due to the cancellation of Reynolds and Maxwell stresses. Here, various wave-wave nonlinear dynamics are elucidated in terms of how they break the Alfvenic state. In particular, we discuss the qualitative and quantitative modification of the SAW parametric decay process due to finite ion compressibility and finite ion Larmor radius. We also show that toroidal geometry plays a crucial role in the nonlinear excitation of zonal structures by Alfven eigenmodes. Within the second route, the coherent nonlinear dynamics of structures in the energetic particle phase space, by which secular resonant particle transport can occur on meso- and macro-scales, must be addressed and understood. These "nonlinear equilibria" or "phase-space zonal structures" dynamically evolve on characteristic (fluctuation induced) turbulent transport time scales, which are generally of the same order of the nonlinear time scale of the underlying fluctuations. In this work, we introduce the general structure of nonlinear Schrodinger equations with complex integro-differential nonlinear terms, which govern these physical processes. To elucidate all these aspects, theoretical analyses are presented together with numerical simulation results.

Abstract:The article presents an analysis of the typical features of shear Alfvén waves in tokamak plasmas in a frequency domain ranging from the `high' frequencies (ω ≅ vA/2qR0, where vA is the Alfvén speed and qR0 is the tokamak connection length) of the toroidal gap to the `low' frequencies, comparable with the thermal ion diamagnetic frequency ω*pi and/or the thermal ion transit frequency ωti = vti/qR0 (where vti is the ion thermal speed).

Abstract:We develop a framework for studying the nonlinear whistler wave at magnetic reconnection sites generated by energetic electron beam in the presence of magnetic islands as well as the nonlinearity. The governing model equation has been derived using the two-fluid model in the presence of the equilibrium magnetic field, consisting of a guide field and magnetic field due to magnetic islands. The dynamical equation for this nonlinear whistler wave has been solved numerically for the magnetopause region parameters. The findings obtained from simulation show that the contour plot of vector potential and current sheet formation is a result of nonlinearity and field perturbation. The numerically determined spectrum shows an inertial range with a spectral index of nearly − 5/3, followed by steeper scaling. This steepening in the turbulent spectrum is a characteristic of energy transit from larger to smaller scales. A new perspective on the scale size of current sheet is provided by our innovative approach for studying nonlinear whistler by energetic electron beam at the magnetic reconnection locations.

Fast ion transport in quasisymmetric equilibria in the presence of a resonant Alfvénic perturbation

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in designing magnetic fields that provide excellent confinement of the guiding enter trajectories of alpha particles using quasisymmetry (QS). Given the reduction in this transport channel, we assess the impact of resonant Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) on the guiding center motion. The AE amplitudes are chosen to be consistent with experimental measurements and large-scale simulations. We evaluate the drift resonance condition, phase-space island width, and island overlap criterion for quasisymmetric configurations. Kinetic Poincaré plots elucidate features of the transport, including stiff transport above a critical perturbation amplitude. Our analysis highlights key departures from the AE-driven transport in tokamaks, such as the avoidance of phase-space island overlap in quasihelical configurations and the enhanced transport due to wide phase-space islands in low magnetic shear configurations. In configurations that are closer to QS, with QS deviations $\delta B/B_0 \lesssim 10^{-3}$, the transport is primarily driven by the AE, while configurations that are further from QS, $\delta B/B_0 \sim 10^{-2}$, experience significant transport due to the QS-breaking fields in addition to the AE.

Abstract:Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are ubiquitous in the solar atmosphere. Alfven waves and magneto-sonic waves are particular classes of MHD waves. These wave modes are clearly different and have pure properties in uniform plasmas of infinite extent only. Due to plasma non-uniformity MHD waves have mixed properties and cannot be classified as pure Alfven or magneto-sonic waves. However, vorticity is a quantity unequivocally related to Alfven waves as compression is for magneto-sonic waves. Here, we investigate MHD waves superimposed on a one-dimensional non-uniform straight cylinder with constant magnetic field. For a piecewise constant density profile we find that the fundamental radial modes of the non-axisymmetric waves have the same properties as surface Alfven waves at a true discontinuity in density. Contrary to the classic Alfveen waves in a uniform plasma of infinite extent, vorticity is zero everywhere except at the cylinder boundary. If the discontinuity in density is replaced with a continuous variation of density, vorticity is spread out over the whole interval with non-uniform density. The fundamental radial modes of the non-axisymmetric waves do not need compression to exist unlike the radial overtones. In thin magnetic cylinders the fundamental radial modes of the non-axisymmetric waves with phase velocities between the internal and the external Alfven velocities can be considered as surface Alfven waves. On the contrary, the radial overtones can be related to fast-like magneto-sonic modes.
