Abstract:As the field of Zr stable isotopes is rapidly expanding from the study of mass-independent to that of mass-dependent isotope effects, a variety of Zr standards have appeared in the literature. While several of these standards have been proposed as the ideal isotope reference material (iRM) against which all data should be reported, none of them have been shown to meet the compositional and/or conflict-of-interest-free distribution requirements put forth by the community. To remedy this situation, we report on a community-led effort to develop and calibrate a scale defining iRM for Zr isotopes: NIST RM 8299. Developed in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from the widely used SRM 3169 Zr Standard Solution, the candidate RM 8299 was calibrated through an inter-laboratory study involving three laboratories. Our data show that RM 8299 meets all requirements of an ideal iRM. It is an isotopically homogeneous, high-purity reference material, that is free of isotope anomalies, and whose composition is identical to that of a major geological reservoir (Ocean Island Basalts). Furthermore, RM 8299 will be curated and distributed by NIST, a neutral, conflict-of-interest free organization, and was produced in sufficient quantities to last multiple decades. We recommend that all Zr isotope data to be reported against RM 8299. Our results also show that SRM 3169 lots #130920 and #071226 have identical composition to RM 8299. Therefore, using RM 8299 as the scale defining iRM will enable direct comparison of all future data with the vast majority of the existing literature data, both for mass-independent and mass-dependent isotope effects. To facilitate conversion of d94/90Zr values reported against other Zr standards, we provide high-precision conversion factors to the RM 8299 scale obtained using the double-spike method.

Abstract:In this study the homogeneity of the zinc isotopic composition in the NIST SRM 683 reference material was examined by measuring the Zn isotopic signature in microdrilled sample powders from two metal nuggets. Zinc was purified using AG MP‐1M resin and then measured by MC‐ICP‐MS. Instrumental mass bias was corrected using the “sample‐standard bracketing” method and empirical external normalisation with Cu doping. After evaluating the potential effects of varying acid mass fractions and different matrices, high‐precision Zn isotope data were obtained with an intermediate measurement precision better than ± 0.05‰ (δ66Zn, 2s) over a period of 5 months. The δ66ZnJMC‐Lyon mean values of eighty‐four and fourteen drilled powders from two nuggets were 0.11 ± 0.02‰ and 0.12 ± 0.02‰, respectively, indicating that NIST SRM 683 is a good isotopic reference material with homogeneous Zn isotopes. The Zn isotopic compositions of seventeen rock reference materials were also determined, and their δ66Zn values were in agreement with most previously published data within 2s. The δ66Zn values of most of the rock reference materials analysed were in the range 0.22–0.36‰, except for GSP‐2 (1.07 ± 0.06‰, n = 12), NOD‐A‐1 (0.96 ± 0.03‰, n = 6) and NOD‐P‐1 (0.78 ± 0.03‰, n = 6). These comprehensive data should serve as reference values for quality assurance and interlaboratory calibration exercises.

Abstract:Key Points Isotopic reference materials are rarely cross‐examined. Optimized regression model and MC‐ICP‐MS offers a cost‐effective way to assess the reliability of values assigned to multi‐isotope standards. A significant lack of consistency has been observed in the long‐standing isotopic reference materials for nickel and zinc. Calibrated isotope ratio measurements underpin numerous areas of scientific enquiry. Isotope measurement results rely on reference materials in order to correct instrumental isotopic fractionation, a bias induced by all mass spectrometers. The reference values assigned to these materials are typically obtained using gravimetric mixtures of separated isotopes but such experiments are costly and thus rarely cross‐examined. Here we advance the concept of linking measurements of various isotope systems to provide a cost‐effective way to assess the reliability of the values assigned to isotopic primary standards. Using MC‐ICP‐MS, we apply this workflow to examine the consistency of a couple of long‐standing isotopic primary standards of copper, nickel and zinc. Our measurement results of the reference materials that define the isotope ratios and consequently the atomic weights of zinc and nickel, Ar(Zn, IRMM‐3702) = 65.3604 ± 0.0023 (95% confidence interval) and Ar(Ni, NIST SRM 986) = 58.6979 ± 0.0010 (95% confidence interval), show zinc to be 15‐sigma lighter and nickel 16‐sigma heavier than their certified values. These discrepancies are suggestive of a wider reproducibility crisis surrounding isotopic standards and a further cross‐examination of isotope ratios associated with primary reference materials is likely to identify yet‐unrecognised biases for many other elements of the Periodic Table leading to improvements of the overall reliability of research conclusions that relies on them.

Abstract:Iron, Cu and Zn stable isotope systems are applied in constraining a variety of geochemical and environmental processes. Secondary reference materials have been developed by the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), in collaboration with other participating laboratories, comprising three solutions (CAGS‐Fe, CAGS‐Cu and CAGS‐Zn) and one basalt (CAGS‐Basalt). These materials exhibit sufficient homogeneity and stability for application in Fe, Cu and Zn isotopic ratio determinations. Reference values were determined by inter‐laboratory analytical comparisons involving up to eight participating laboratories employing MC‐ICP‐MS techniques, based on the unweighted means of submitted results. Isotopic compositions are reported in per mil notation, based on reference materials IRMM‐014 for Fe, NIST SRM 976 for Cu and IRMM‐3702 for Zn. Respective reference values of CAGS‐Fe, CAGS‐Cu and CAGS‐Zn solutions are as follows: δ56Fe = 0.83 ± 0.07 and δ57Fe = 1.20 ± 0.13, δ65Cu = 0.57 ± 0.06, and δ66Zn = −0.79 ± 0.12 and δ68Zn = −1.65 ± 0.24, respectively. Those of CAGS‐Basalt are δ56Fe = 0.15 ± 0.07, δ57Fe = 0.22 ± 0.10, δ65Cu = 0.12 ± 0.08, δ66Zn = 0.17 ± 0.13, and δ68Zn = 0.34 ± 0.26 (2s).

Abstract:Silver isotopes have been extensively used in environment, archaeology, and economic geology. Nevertheless, accurate analysis of Ag isotope ratios faces challenges caused by the presence of matrix elements ( e.g. Zn, Cu, and Pb) in most sulfide samples due to isobaric and polyatomic interferences during multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) routines. Most of these elements, such as Cu and Pb, can be effectively removed after the first column through a tandem column setup. However, the complete removal of Zn from Ag remains a significant unresolved issue, particularly given their common coexistence in sulfide minerals. Combining previous studies and the chemical principle of ion exchange resin, we optimized a two-stage ion exchange procedure by meticulously adjusting solution volumes and the column separation process. A condensed Zn-doped NIST SRM (silver international standard reference material) 978a was tested for AG50W-X8 resin following our modified procedure, resulting in distinct elution curves of Ag and Zn. Subsequently, three sphalerite samples were selected for the optimized two-stage ion exchange procedure, and ICP-MS results of silver elution fractions demonstrated complete separation of Ag and Zn. The whole procedure achieved an Ag yield exceeding 98.1 ± 2.3% (2SD, n = 4). NIST SRM 978a and IAEA-S-1 (an in-house standard) were tested for long-term reproducibility with −0.001 ± 0.030‰ (2SD, n = 25) and 0.054 ± 0.023‰ (2SD, n = 22) of δ 109 Ag, respectively, indicating the high accuracy in MC-ICPMS routines. Zn-doped NIST SRM 978a and sphalerite samples were further subjected to the modified procedure, and they exhibited values of 0.004 ± 0.014‰ (2SD, n = 3) and −0.214 ± 0.033‰ (2SD, n = 12), respectively, for δ 109 Ag. Moreover, we selected eight sphalerite samples from several hypogene deposits in China and obtained δ 109 Ag values from −0.229‰ to 2.227‰, indicating the significant Ag isotopic fractionation between Ag-bearing and Zn-rich minerals in hypogene deposits. In conclusion, this study shows the feasibility of accurately measuring Ag isotopes in Zn-rich samples and reveals their application potential in related Ag-bearing and Zn-rich deposits.

Abstract:The stable strontium (Sr) isotope system is being increasingly utilized to move forward our understanding of environmental, geological, and cosmological processes. Two analytical techniques are commonly used to measure stable Sr isotopes: 1) double-spike thermal ionization mass spectrometry (DS-TIMS) and 2) Zr-doped sample-standard bracketing multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Zr-doped SSB via MC-ICP-MS). Relative to DS-TIMS, Zr-doped SSB via MC-ICP-MS allows simultaneous determination of both 87Sr/86Sr and 88Sr/86Sr ratios, increasing measurement efficiency and sample throughput. However, several factors limit the analytical precision and accuracy of this technique, including matrix effects and potential intra- and inter-session offsets of measured isotope ratios. In this study, we evaluate potential causes for the observed offsets. We performed a series of experiments to assess the effect of different solution matrices and sources of contamination on Sr isotope measurements and to explore potential underlying mechanisms. Our tests show that incomplete Sr recovery during chromatographic separation, mismatches of Sr and Zr concentrations and acid molarity between samples and bracketing standards, and cation contamination all affect the precision and accuracy of Sr isotope measurements. We present evidence that analyses using our recommended updated preparation procedure for Zr-doped SSB via MC-ICP-MS can achieve a long-term reproducibility (2σSD: 87Sr/86Sr = ±0.000015 and δ88/86Sr = ±0.03 ‰) comparable to that of DS-TIMS.

High Precision Zinc Stable Isotope Measurement of Certified Biological Reference Materials Using the Double Spike Technique and Multiple Collector-ICP-MS

Abstract:Biological reference materials with well-characterised stable isotope compositions are lacking in the field of ‘isotope biochemistry’, which seeks to understand bodily processes that rely on essential metals by determining metal stable isotope ratios. Here, we present Zn stable isotope data for six biological reference materials with certified trace metal concentrations: fish muscle, bovine muscle, pig kidney, human hair, human blood serum and human urine. Replicate analyses of multiple aliquots of each material achieved reproducibilities (2sd) of 0.04–0.13‰ for δ66/64Zn (which denotes the deviation of the 66Zn/64Zn ratio of a sample from a pure Zn reference material in parts per 1000). This implies only very minor isotopic heterogeneities within the samples, rendering them suitable as quality control materials for Zn isotope analyses. This endorsement is reinforced by (i) the close agreement of our Zn isotope data for two of the samples (bovine muscle and human blood serum) to previously published results for different batches of the same material and (ii) the similarity of the isotopic data for the samples (δ66/64Zn ≈ –0.8 to 0.0‰) to previously published Zn isotope results for similar biological materials. Further tests revealed that the applied Zn separation procedure is sufficiently effective to enable accurate data acquisition even at low mass resolving power (M/ΔM ≈ 400), as measurements and analyses conducted at much higher mass resolution (M/ΔM ≈ 8500) delivered essentially identical results.

Abstract:Zirconium plays a major role in geochemistry as it is the major cation of zircons - the oldest preserved minerals on Earth. While Zr isotopic anomalies in meteorites have been widely studied, mass dependant Zr stable isotope fractionation during geological processing has been untouched. Here, we report Zr stable isotopic data for terrestrial igneous rocks and present a novel method for the determination of Zr stable isotope ratios within natural geological materials using ion exchange, double-spike, multiple-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS). Zirconium is isolated from the rock matrix via a chromatographic separation protocol using a first pass column with AG1-X8 anion exchange resin, and a second pass column containing Eichrom® DGA resin. A 91Zr–96Zr double-spike was created from enriched single 91Zr and 96Zr isotope spikes. Samples were combined with the Zr double-spike at a 43:57 spike:sample [Zr] ratio, prior to dissolution and column chemistry. After column chemistry the purified sample solutions were analysed on a Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus MC-ICPMS and the data was reduced using IsoSpike, with the final Zr isotope data being reported as the per mil deviation of the 94Zr/90Zr from the IPGP-Zr standard (δ94/90ZrIPGP-Zr). The δ94/90ZrIPGP-Zr of six igneous standard reference materials: two basalts (BHVO-2 and JB-2), one andesite (AGV-2), two granites (GA and GS-N) and a serpentinite (UB-N) as well as one individual zircon grain (Plešovice zircon), are presented using this method. Sample measurements are presented with an analytical uncertainty of ±~0.05‰ (2sd) for δ94/90ZrIPGP-Zr and these rocks exhibit isotopic variations of ~0.15‰ for δ94/90ZrIPGP-Zr. These results demonstrate that natural variations of Zr isotopes occur within terrestrial igneous rocks, and are resolvable with this method. Finally the variation of δ94/90ZrIPGP-Zr values observed within the magmatic rock reference materials is correlated (R2 = 0.78; n = 5) with SiO2, suggesting that Zr isotopes could serve as a sensitive tracer of magmatic processes.
Factors Affecting Chromium Isotope Measurements Using the Double-Spike Method

Abstract:Rationale The double-spike technique is widely used in stable metal isotope measurements to correct for instrumental fractionation, and this method has achieved prominence for chromium (Cr) isotope measurements in the past decade or so. For this method to work, precise calibration of the double spike was thought to be indispensable. However, the effect of carrying out this precise calibration has not been fully evaluated. Moreover, other factors that can affect the accuracy of Cr isotope measurements using the double spike have also not been thoroughly evaluated. Methods First using theoretical calculation, we assessed whether precise knowledge of the measured mass fractionation of the double spike is necessary. We then developed a double-spike method for measuring the Cr stable isotopic composition using multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). We tested the key factors that can affect the accuracy of Cr isotope measurements. Results By theoretical calculation we found that the uncorrected instrumental mass fractionation of the double spike will not result in any systematic bias on the measurements of delta Cr-53 values in the sample, provided that the double spike, standard and sample are measured on the same instrument and with the same cup configuration. Incorporating this result, with our new method, the presence of Fe and Ti (up to 5% wt of the Cr concentration in the sample) can be fully corrected. The long-term reproducibility of an internal standard was +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2SD), and the external reproducibility on the delta Cr-53 difference between our internal standard and the NIST Standard Reference Material 3112a was -0.07 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand. The delta Cr-53 values for a set of USGS geological reference materials including basalt (BHVO-1,2; BIR-1; GSR-3), mica schist (SDC-1), diabase (W-2-a), peridotite (PCC-1) and dunite (DTS-2) were measured, with our results for BHVO-2 and BIR-1 being consistent with previously reported values. Conclusions We have shown that precise knowledge of the measured mass fractionation of the double spike is not necessary during spike calibration and thus the calibration procedure is simplified. We can apply our new Cr isotope method to a range of geological rock samples with a wide range of variation in the chemical composition.
Optimization of analytical conditions for precise and accurate isotope analyses of Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn by MC-ICPMS

Abstract:Analytical advances in Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) over the past decade have led to rapid growth in studies utilizing non-traditional stable isotopes. There are substantial analytical challenges for achieving precise and accurate measurements of these isotopes that limit their applications in geoscience where natural isotopic variations are generally small. Here, we evaluate experimental factors that may affect the accuracy and repeatability of isotopic measurements of selected stable metal isotopes (Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) on a Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS to provide optimized analytical protocols for acquiring high quality data. Our results suggest that the repeatability level (2SD) that is readily obtainable for delta Li-7 is +/- 0.09 parts per thousand to +/- 0.24 parts per thousand, for delta Mg-26 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Fe-56 is +/- 0.05 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Cu-65 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, and for delta Zn-66 is +/- 0.02 parts per thousand to +/- 0.04 parts per thousand. Instrumental mass bias for these isotope systems can be corrected adequately using the standard-sample bracketing method but it requires that target elements are of high purity, a close match in analyte concentrations between samples and bracketing standards, and preparation of all running solutions using the same concentration of nitric acid. Overall, the Nu Plasma II is well suited for precise and accurate analyses of the isotopes studied here, and the optimal results were obtained using a 'wet' plasma operating at a normal radio-frequency (RF) power.
Silicon Isotope Compositions of Soil and Sediment Reference Materials Determined by MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:This study presents a method for high-precision Si isotope measurement of soil and sediment reference materials using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry with HF-free digestion. Potential impacts on instrumental measurement, including acid concentration, Si concentration mismatch and matrix effects, were rigorously evaluated. The acidity mismatch caused a significantly negative shift in delta Si-30 values when the HCl concentration ratios of the sample/standard were higher than 2. The Si concentration mismatch could result in an obvious deviation in delta Si-30 values when the sample/standard concentration ratios are > 1.5 or < 0.7. Matrix elements in solution did not affect Si isotope measurements when Na/Si <= 2, Mg/Si <= 2, Al/Si <= 0.5, K/Si <= 2, Ca/Si <= 1 and Fe/Si <= 2. Increasing the loading volume from 1 ml to 6 ml during chemical separation can still enable effective purification of Si and is more efficient for low Si content samples. The long-term measurement precision of three igneous rock reference materials (BHVO-2, BCR-2 and AGV-2) was better than +/- 0.06 parts per thousand (2s) for delta Si-30 values. The delta Si-30 values of eighteen soil and sediment reference materials were identical in two laboratories. The values varied from -1.65 parts per thousand to -0.13 parts per thousand, indicating that Si isotopes can be more widely used to study supergene processes.
Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd elemental concentrations and Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of 13 Chinese rock reference materials using isotope dilution TIMS and MC–ICP–MS

Abstract:The suitability of 13 Chinese silicate rock certified reference materials for Sr and Nd isotope analyses was firstly investigated. To indicate their homogeneity and to provide information values, we report Sr and Nd isotopic data and Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd concentrations for reference materials GBW07 103–105, 109–113 and 121–125 spanning a broad compositional range. Test portions were spiked with tracers enriched in 87 Rb– 84 Sr and 149 Sm– 145,146,150 Nd and digested using HF, HNO 3 , and HClO 4 acid-dissolution procedures. Chemical purification involved cation-exchange and HEHEHP or Ln resins. Analyses involved different instruments at four laboratories, including thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (TIMS) and multicollector–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (MC–ICP–MS). This study provides a comprehensive report of the Rb–Sr and Sm–Nd isotopic compositions of the reference materials, and the results indicate that the materials are of comparable to those of well-characterised and widely utilized reference materials of the US Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Japan. This is the first report of the Sr and Nd isotopic composition of standards GBW07111, GBW07112, GBW07121, GBW07122, GBW07123, GBW07124 and GBW07125. Our results are useful for quality control and assurance between laboratories and provide a robust reference-rock dataset for future studies involving classical Sr and Nd isotopic geochemistry.

Abstract:Key Points Development of a measurement procedure for Rb isotope data (δ87RbSRM984) of low‐Rb geological materials using MC‐ICP‐MS. The Rb loading amount was reduced significantly to 20 ng. The long‐term (over one year) intermediate measurement precision was better than 0.05‰ (2 standard deviations). The rubidium (Rb) isotope system has the potential to trace planetary evolution, magmatic‐fluid interaction and chemical weathering. These applications are based on Rb isotope measurement results with precisions fit for purpose, but measurements of low‐Rb geological materials are challenging due to large sample consumption and overload of ion‐exchange resin. Here we developed a measurement procedure for Rb isotope data (δ87RbSRM984) of low‐Rb geological materials using MC‐ICP‐MS. Using an Aridus III desolvator and Ni standard sampler + Ni X skimmer cone combination, the Rb loading amount was reduced significantly to 20 ng. A comparison between two methods for instrumental mass‐bias correction, the sample‐standard bracketing and combined sample‐standard bracketing and internal (Zr) normalisation (C‐SSBIN), shows that C‐SSBIN could produce Rb isotope data with better intermediate measurement precisions but strictly restricted to optimal Zr/Rb ratio. The robustness of this method was demonstrated by monitoring δ87RbSRM984 data of two in‐house Rb isotope standards, replicates, some reference materials with δ87RbSRM984 values previously reported, and element‐doped and matrix‐spiked synthetic solutions. Based on repeated measurements of Rb isotope standards and reference materials, the long‐term (over one year) intermediate precision was better than 0.05‰ (2s, standard deviations). We additionally recommend thirteen reliable reference materials for future Rb isotope ratio measurements.

Abstract:As one of the most important members of the metal stable isotope family, zinc isotopes have attracted quite a lot of attention by international scientific community since the last century. In the 21st century, with the development of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the applications of zinc isotope have been greatly expanded and deepened in the Earth and planetary science. Here we provide a relatively detailed overview of research on zinc isotopes, including the reference materials and analytical methods of zinc isotopes, the zinc isotope compositions of the main reservoirs in nature, the behavior and fractionation mechanisms of zinc isotopes in different geological processes, and recent advances on zinc isotopes in the four fields of Earth science:（1） tracing the deep carbon cycle, recycled oceanic materials and the origin of compositional transition of alkaline basalts;（2） tracing the sources of ore-forming material, microbial mineralization, and indicating mineral exploration;（3） unrevealing the origin and evolution of the moon;（4） indicating the primary productivity, biogeochemical processes, and the mechanism of the mass extinction at the end of Permian. In the future, with the development of zinc isotope microarea in situ analysis technology, zinc isotopes will be widely used in geosciences, especially in ore deposits, and biomedical sciences.
Improvements in Cu–Zn Isotope Analysis with MC-ICP-MS: A Revisit of Chemical Purification, Mass Spectrometry Measurement and Mechanism of Cu/Zn Mass Bias Decoupling Effect

Abstract:A revised chemical purification procedure for Cu-Zn isotopes is proposed in this study. The handing time and amounts of chemicals, such as H2O2 and HCl are largely saved with this modification. The ionization efficiencies of Cu and Zn are investigated in detail in wet and dry plasma with two kinds of skimmer cones. The ionization efficiency of Zn is depressed by HNO3 in the matrix, while HCl affects Cu and Zn ionization efficiency similarly. Potential polyatomic interferences with Zn-68(+) and Zn-70(+) are (ArN2+)-Ar-40-N-14 and (ArNO+)-Ar-40-N-14-O-16 respectively, which are highly dependent on the amount of N-2 in dry plasma and on the HNO3 concentration in wet plasma. Use of the DNS sample introduction device without N-2 gas provides the best conditions for Cu-Zn isotope measurement. A Cu/Zn mass bias decoupling effect has been revealed in this study, and this effect appears to be dependent on the presence of HNO3 and N-2 in ionizing plasma. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Prospect of High Precision Mass Spectrometer in Isotope Geochemistry

Abstract:The high precision measurement of isotopic ratios for micro-geological samples has become very important in the geological and environmental sciences. Recently developed solid-source thermal ionization mass spectrometers are highly precise and sensitive, and are playing a crucial role in isotopic geochronology and geochemistry. This paper reports analytical data obtained from standard material solutions using an IsoProbe-T mass spectrometer. Measurements on the Sr standard material NBS987 and Nd standard material Ames yielded mean 87Sr/ 86Sr and 143Nd/ 144Nd ratio values of 0.7102418± 0.0000051 and 0.5121484±0.0000029, respectively, with an internal precision better than 0.0003%. Measurements using a small amount of the Sr standard material solution NBS987 (0.3-1ng) yielded an internal precision significantly better than 0.003%. Combining chemical separation procedures having low blank, measurements of micro-geological samples have successively been achieved. This combination of low-blank chemical procedures and the use of a high precision mass spectrometer will potently promote applications of single-grain geochronology and isotopic tracer on magmatic rocks, metamorphic rocks, ore deposits and tectonites.

Abstract:This study presents a method for high‐precision Si isotope measurement of soil and sediment reference materials using multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry with HF‐free digestion. Potential impacts on instrumental measurement, including acid concentration, Si concentration mismatch and matrix effects, were rigorously evaluated. The acidity mismatch caused a significantly negative shift in δ 30 Si values when the HCl concentration ratios of the sample/standard were higher than 2. The Si concentration mismatch could result in an obvious deviation in δ 30 Si values when the sample/standard concentration ratios are > 1.5 or < 0.7. Matrix elements in solution did not affect Si isotope measurements when Na/Si ≤ 2, Mg/Si ≤ 2, Al/Si ≤ 0.5, K/Si ≤ 2, Ca/Si ≤ 1 and Fe/Si ≤ 2. Increasing the loading volume from 1 ml to 6 ml during chemical separation can still enable effective purification of Si and is more efficient for low Si content samples. The long‐term measurement precision of three igneous rock reference materials (BHVO‐2, BCR‐2 and AGV‐2) was better than ± 0.06‰ (2 s ) for δ 30 Si values. The δ 30 Si values of eighteen soil and sediment reference materials were identical in two laboratories. The values varied from −1.65‰ to −0.13‰, indicating that Si isotopes can be more widely used to study supergene processes.
High‐Precision Cd Isotope Measurements of Soil and Rock Reference Materials by MC‐ICP‐MS with Double Spike Correction

Abstract:This study presents a high‐precision Cd isotope measurement method for soil and rock reference materials using MC‐ICP‐MS with double spike correction. The effects of molecular interferences (e.g., 109Ag1H+, 94Zr16O+, 94Mo16O+ and 70Zn40Ar+) and isobaric interferences (e.g., Pd, In and Sn) to Cd isotope measurements were quantitatively evaluated. When the measured solution has Ag/Cd ≤ 5, Zn/Cd ≤ 0.02, Mo/Cd ≤ 0.4, Zr/Cd ≤ 0.001, Pd/Cd ≤ 5 × 10−5 and In/Cd ≤ 10−3, the measured Cd isotope data were not significantly affected. The intermediate measurement precision of pure Cd solutions (BAM I012 Cd, Münster Cd and AAS Cd) was better than ± 0.05‰ (2s) for δ114/110Cd. The δ114/110Cd values of soil reference materials (NIST SRM 2709, 2709a, 2710, 2710a, 2711, 2711a and GSS‐1) relative to NIST SRM 3108 were in the range of −0.251 to 0.632‰, the δ114/110Cd values of rock reference materials (BCR‐2, BIR‐1, BHVO‐2, W‐2, AGV‐2, GSP‐2 and COQ‐1) varied from −0.196‰ to 0.098‰, and that of the manganese nodule (NOD‐P‐1) was 0.163 ± 0.040‰ (2s, n = 8). The large variation in Cd isotopes in soils and igneous rocks indicates that they can be more widely used to study magmatic and supergene processes.

Abstract:This paper reported the analytical results of the NIST SRM987 measured by Neptune multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(MC-ICP-MS) over last two years.Geological samples after traditional chemical separation were measured by Neptune MC-ICP-MS and thermal ionization mass spectrometry(TIMS),respectively.Neptune MC-ICP-MS can precisely measure strontium isotopic composition as the TIMS does,even more effective and less time-consuming than the TIMS method.For the krypton from ICP source carrier—the argon gas,isobaric interference can be directly corrected without the requirement for mass discrimination correction due to low level of the krypton ion beam.As for the sample containing small amount of rubidium(Rb/Sr0.01),direct calibration for isobaric interference and mass discrimination by the exponential law can be obtained by assuming that rubidium mass discrimination is the same as that of strontium.
