Abstract:Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) with diameters of 1.0-1.5 nm (with similar bandgap to crystalline silicon) are highly desired for nano electronics. Up to date, the highest reported content of s-SWNTs as-grown is similar to 97%, which is still far below the daunting requirements of high-end applications. Herein, we report a feasible and green pathway to use H2O vapor to modulate the structure of the intermetallic W6Co7 nanocrystals. By using the resultant W6Co7 nanocatalysts with a high percentage of (1 0 10) planes as structural templates, we realized the direct growth of s-SWNT with the purity of similar to 99%, in which similar to 97% is (14,4) tubes (diameter 1.29 nm). H2O can also act as an environmentally friendly and facile etchant for eliminating metallic SWNTs, and the content of s-SWNTs was further improved to 99.8% and (14,4) tubes to 98.6%. High purity s-SWNTs with even bandgap determined by their uniform structure can be used for the exquisite applications in different fields.

Abstract:PbSe nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a reactive template approach via solvothermal transformation of trigonal selenium (t-Se) nanotubes in ethylene glycol. It was revealed that a relatively high reaction temperature (e. g., 200 degrees C), adequate ascorbic acid, and proper lead source were crucial for preparing PbSe nanotubes through shape-preserved transformation of t-Se nanotubes. Moreover, novel Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes consisting of Se nanotubes covered with a PbSe sheath were obtained by shortening the reaction time and subsequent removal of the inner Se nanotubes resulted in the formation of thin-walled PbSe nanotubes (less than 20 nm in wall thickness). On the basis of the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the formation of PbSe nanotubes as well as Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes was proposed. Furthermore, preliminary electrochemical measurements showed that the prepared PbSe nanotubes exhibited a good electrochemical activity.

Abstract:Based on an in situ template method, branched phosphazene -containing nanotubes were synthesized via a controlled two-step adding technique of acid acceptors. Structural and morphological characterizations of the as-synthesized products were performed by SEM, TEM, EDX and FTIR. The results showed that the branched nanotubes were had inner and outer diameters of 8 and 50-150 nm, respectively. In addition, a formation mechanism for the nano-structures was proposed.

Abstract:PbSe nanowires with an average size of 8 × 350 nm were synthesized by the reaction of Pb(NO 3 ) 2 and Se powder at 60 °C under ambient pressure. A mixture of arachidic acid (AA, n ‐C 19 H 39 COOH) and octadecylamine (ODA), which could form a complex with Pb 2+ , was employed as a soft template to control the morphology of the resultant PbSe nanowires. The products were characterized by X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy. Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:The single-crystalline Se nanotubes were synthesized on the surface of Au sheet electrode by cyclic voltammetry. In synthesis process, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used as soft-template. The formation mechanism of Se nanotubes was discussed. Furthermore, the deposits with other morphologies were also obtained by modulating parameters in the synthesis process. The products as-prepared were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser Raman spectrograph (LRS). The electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by the linear scan voltammetry.

Abstract:This article describes a rapid, solution-phase approach to the large-scale synthesis of faceted single-crystalline Se nanotubes, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, laser Raman spectrography, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The growth mechanism of the Se nanotubes was investigated by a series of experiments, and the rationality of the faceted morphology model for the Se nanotubes was demonstrated from the energetics and geometry. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of the Se nanotubes was studied by voltammetric techniques.

Abstract:A facile method, combining hydrothermal method with the template technique, was developed to synthesize open-ends carbon nanottibes(CNTs). X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy analysis techniques were used to characterize the samples. The electrochemical properties of the as-prepared CNTs as mode materials for lithium battery were studied by galvanostatic method. Results showed that the as-prepared CNTs displayed higher capacity and superior cycle performance in comparison with the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs).

By combining the already known soft-template and sacrificial-template synthetic methodologies, hollow nanostructures of various shapes and materials can be designed without the need for complicated processes such as chemical etching or calcination. Here, CdS nanotubes are prepared from Cd(OH)Cl nanorods and thioacetamide, using biodegradable gelatin as the soft template (see HRTEM image).

Abstract:We report a robust method for synthesis of monodisperse PbSeTe single ternary alloy and core/shell heterostructured nanocubes, respectively. The key synthetic strategy to produce such different classes of nanocubes is to precisely control the time of reaction and successive growth. The crystallinity, shape/size distributions, structural characteristics, and compositions of as-prepared nanocubes, both ternary alloy and core/shell, were carefully studied. A plausible growth mechanism for developing each type of lead chalcogenide nanocubes is proposed. These delicately designed PbSeTe nanoscale architectures offer tunable compositions in PbSeTe ternary alloy and nano-interfaces in core/shell nanocubes, which are the critical factors in controlling thermal conductivity for applications in thermoelectrics.

Abstract:We present a surfactant-assisted solvothermal approach for the controllable synthesis of a PbS nanocrystal at low temperature (85 degrees C). Nanotubes (400 nm in length with an outer diameter of 30 nm), bundle-like long nanorods (about 5-15 mu m long and an average diameter of 100 nm), nanowires (5-20 mu m in length and with a diameter of 20-50 nm), short nanorods (100-300 nm in length and an axial ratio of 5-10), nanoparticles (25 nm in width with an aspect ratio of 2), and nanocubes (a short axis length of 10 nm and a long axis length of 15 nm) were successfully prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction pattern. A series of experimental results indicated that several experimental factors, such as AOT concentration, ratio of [water]/[surfactant], reaction time, and ratio of the reagents, play key roles in the final morphologies of PbS. Possible formation mechanisms of PbS nanorods and nanotubes were proposed.

Abstract:Iron diselenium (FeSe2) with rational design and tailored synthesis is a promising transition metal chalcogenide because of its suitable optical and electronic properties. Despite these prospects, controllable synthesis of FeSe2 with a special hierarchical heterostructure has hardly been paid attention to previously. Here, we report a successful synthesis of FeSe2 microtubes in a system of water glycol mixture using a sacrificial self-template method. This method leads to the formation of a FeSe2 microtube embedded with nanooctahedra in the remaining Se template, which can be regarded as a special hetero-junction morphology. Moreover, a growth mechanism of the FeSe2 microtube was discussed. This unique morphology and facile synthesis might facilitate the study of transition metal chalcogenides.

Abstract:Highly uniform CdTe nanowires with a very high aspect ratio of similar to 1000 and an average diameter of 12 nm can be conveniently synthesized using ultrathin Te nanowires as templates via a low-temperature hydrothermal process. Several other interesting CdTe nanostructures, including tadpolelike, chainlike, and branched nanostructures, can also be fabricated by adjusting precursor concentrations and reaction temperature. The formation mechanism of uniform CdTe nanowires using highly reactive ultrathin Te nanowires as template has been discussed. The synthesized-uniform CdTe nanowires can be well-dispersed in water or ethanol, and they may find potential applications in the fields of photovoltaics, biological sensors, and nanoscale electronics. The present templating method can also be extended to synthesize other one-dimensional telluride nanostructures such as PbTe nanowires with uniform diameter and high aspect ratios.

Abstract:Spherical PbSe hollow nanostructure assemblies (HNSAs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot solid/liquid-phase reaction in which solid KPbI3 center dot 2H(2)O and SeO2 are heated in oleic acid/dodecylamine/1-octadecene at 250 degrees C for 30 min. XRD analysis shows that the obtained product is cubic-phase PbSe and well crystallized. FESEM and TEM images reveal that the obtained spherical PbSe assemblies are made up of small, irregular, and fused hollow nanostructure building blocks. On the basis of temperature- and time-dependent investigations as well as control experiments, molten-salt corrosion of solid PbSe nanocrystal aggregates formed in situ during the high-temperature ripening stage is suggested to explain the formation of such novel assemblies. Moreover, when the reaction temperature is further increased to 280 or 320 degrees C with other conditions unchanged, cubic and orthorhombic mixed-phase PbSe HNSAs is generated. The obtained PbSe HNSAs exhibit excellent electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) performance. Two strong and stable emission peaks at about -1.4 and +1.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) are observed. In particular, the ECL intensity is influenced by the crystal phase of PbSe.

Abstract:One-dimensional hollow nanostructures have potential applications in many fields and can be fabricated using various methods. Herein, a selective-oxidation route for the synthesis of unique Te x Se y nanotubes (STNTs) with a controlled morphology using Te x Se y @Se core–shell nanowires (TSSNWs) as a template is reported. Because of the lower redox potential of TeO 2 /Te compared to that of H 2 SeO 3 /Se, the Te in TSSNWs can be preferentially oxidized by an appropriate oxidant of HNO 2 to form STNTs. The inner diameters and wall thicknesses of the STNTs can be tuned by modulating the core diameters and shell thicknesses of the TSSNWs, respectively. The STNTs can be assembled into a monolayer composed of well-arranged nanotubes using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. A device based on films stacked with 10 STNT monolayers was fabricated to investigate the photocoductivity of the STNTs. The STNTs exhibited a good photoresponse over the whole ultraviolet–visible spectrum, revealing their potential for application in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Ultrathin CeO2 nanowires with a diameter of 5 nm and an aspect ratio of more than 100 can be prepared by a one-step refluxing approach in a mixed solvent composed of water and ethanol without using any templates or surfactants. The formation mechanism of the as-synthesized ultrathin nanowires has been investigated. The as-synthesized CeO2 nanowires with a high surface area of 125.31 m2 g-1 exhibited excellent wastewater treatment performance with high removal capacities towards organic dyes and heavy metal ions. In addition, the as-synthesized CeO2 nanowires can adsorb Congo red selectively from a mixed solution composed of several dyes. Successful access to high quality ultrathin nanowires will make it possible for their potential application in catalysis and other fields.
