Abstract:Rechargeable batteries that make renewable energy resources feasible for electrification technologies have been extensively investigated. Their corresponding performance is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics and chemical dynamics of internal electrode and electrolyte materials under operating conditions. To enhance battery performance and lifetime, a comprehensive understanding of the structure‐dynamics‐performance correlation of such materials under different working conditions is of great significance. Fortunately, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) encompassing high‐resolution imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis, offers unprecedented insights into the nano/atomic scale structural changes and degradation pathways of rechargeable battery materials under operational conditions. Such insights are pivotal for a deep‐rooted understanding of reaction mechanisms and the structure‐activity interplay within battery materials. This work, therefore, highlights the advances in in situ TEM's utility in unveiling dynamic chemical and physical changes in real‐time within battery materials of rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical processes and degradation mechanisms are systematically explored and summarized. Moreover, the technical progress, challenges, and valuable insights provided by in situ TEM techniques for addressing critical issues in battery materials are underscored. The work concludes with a discussion of emerging research directions that hold the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy field in the near future.
In Situ Observation of the Electrochemical Behavior of Li–CO2/O2 Batteries in an Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope

Abstract:Li-CO2/O-2 batteries, a promising energy storage technology, not only provide ultrahigh discharge capacity but also capture CO2 and turn it into renewable energy. Their electrochemical reaction pathways' ambiguity, however, creates a hurdle for their practical application. This study used copper selenide (CuSe) nanosheets as the air cathode medium in an environmental transmission electron microscope to in situ study Li-CO2/O-2 (mix CO2 as well as O-2 at a volume ratio of 1:1) and Li-O-2 batteries as well as Li-CO2 batteries. Primary discharge reactions take place successively in the Li-CO2/O-2-CuSe nanobattery: (I) 4Li(+) + O-2 + 4e(-) -> 2Li(2)O; (II) Li2O + CO2 -> Li2CO3. The charge reaction proceeded via (III) 2Li(2)CO(3) -> 4Li(+) + 2CO(2) + O-2 + 4e(-). However, Li-O-2 and Li-CO2 nanobatteries showed poor cycling stability, suggesting the difficulty in the direct decomposition of the discharge product. The fluctuations of the Li-CO2/O-2 battery's electrochemistry were also shown to depend heavily on O-2. The CuSe-based Li-CO2/O-2 battery showed exceptional electrochemical performance. The Li-CO2/O-2 battery offered a discharge capacity apex of 15,492 mAh g(-1) and stable cycling 60 times at 100 mA g(-1). Our research offers crucial insight into the electrochemical behavior of Li-CO2/O-2, Li-O-2, and Li-CO2 nanobatteries, which may help the creation of high-performance Li-CO2/O-2 batteries for energy storage applications.
Charging/Discharging Nanomorphology Asymmetry and Rate-Dependent Capacity Degradation in Li-Oxygen Battery

Abstract:Liquid-cell in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of the charge/discharge reactions of nonaqueous Li-oxygen battery cathode were performed with ∼5 nm spatial resolution. The discharging reaction occurred at the interface between the electrolyte and the reaction product, whereas in charging, the reactant was decomposed at the contact with the gold current collector, indicating that the lithium ion diffusivity/electronic conductivity is the limiting factor in discharging/charging, respectively, which is a root cause for the asymmetry in discharging/charging overpotential. Detachments of lithium oxide particles from the current collector into the liquid electrolyte are frequently seen when the cell was discharged at high overpotentials, with loss of active materials into liquid electrolyte ("flotsam") under minute liquid flow agitation, as the lithium peroxide dendritic trees are shown to be fragile mechanically and electrically. Our result implies that enhancing the binding force between the reaction products and the current collector to maintain robust electronic conduction is a key for improving the battery performance. This work demonstrated for the first time the in situ TEM observation of a three-phase-reaction involving gold electrode, lithium oxides, DMSO electrolyte and lithium salt, and O2 gas. The technique described in this work is not limited to Li-oxygen battery but also can be potentially used in other applications involving gas/liquid/solid electrochemical reactions.
Operando Liquid Cell Electron Microscopy of Discharge and Charge Kinetics in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Despite the promising future of lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery in replacing conventional lithium ion battery for high-energy applications, the complicated reaction mechanisms determining the sluggish discharge-charge kinetics have not been fully understood. Here, utilizing in situ liquid transmission electron microscopy, the (electro) chemical fundamentals in a working Li-O-2 battery is explored. During discharge, the nucleation of Li2O2 is observed at the carbon electrode/electrolyte interface, and the following growth process exhibits Li+ diffusion-limited kinetics. Nucleation and growth of Li2O2 are also observed within the electrolyte, where there is no direct contact with the carbon electrode indicating the existence of non-Faradaic disproportionation reaction of intermediate LiO2 into Li2O2. The growth of Li2O2 isolated in the electrolyte exhibits O-2(-) diffusion-limited kinetics. Li2O2 at the carbon electrode surface and isolated in the electrolyte are both active upon charging and gradually decomposed. For Li2O2 particles rooted at the carbon electrode surface, the decomposition starts at the electrode/Li2O2 interface indicating electron-conduction limited charge kinetics. For Li2O2 isolated within the electrolyte, surprisingly, a side-to-side decomposition mode is identified indicating the non-Faradaic formation of dissolvable O-2(-), whose diffusion in the electrolyte controls the overall charge kinetics. This work reveals further details of underlying mechanisms in a working Li-O-2 battery and identifies various limiting factors controlling the discharge and charge processes.

Abstract:Metal oxides hold the promise of high-capacity anodes for Li-ion batteries. Lithiation of binary metal oxides proceeds with two typical mechanisms: insertion and conversion. We characterize the two-step lithiation behavior of α-MoO3, namely, Li intercalation in the layered α-MoO3 leads to the formation of crystalline Li2MoO3 in the early stage of lithiation, and further Li insertion coverts LixMoO3 to metallic Mo and amorphous Li2O. The intercalation process is thermodynamically more favorable and is accompanied with a minor volumetric change, while the conversion reaction is kinetically slow and induces large deformation. Furthermore, instead of showing significant Li-embrittlement as seen in typical oxides, α-MoO3 remains defects free despite the nearly 100% repetitive volumetric change during lithiation cycles. The reaction mechanism, structural evolution, and mechanical behaviors are unveiled through coordinated in-situ transmission electron microcopy experiments on α-MoO3 nanobelts and first-principles computational studies. The results provide fundamental perspectives in the course of developing reliable high-capacity electrodes for Li-ion batteries.
New insight in understanding oxygen reduction and evolution in solid-state lithium-oxygen batteries using an in situ environmental scanning electron microscope.

Abstract:Via designing a facile microscale all-solid-state lithium oxygen battery system constructed in an environmental scanning electron microscope, direct visualization of discharge and charge processes of the lithium oxygen battery is achieved. Different morphologies of the discharge product are observed, including a sphere, conformal film, and red-blood-cell-like shape, with a particle size up to 1.5 mu m; whereas upon charge, the decomposition initiates at their surface and continues along a certain direction, instead of from the contact point at the electrode. These new findings indicate that the electron and lithium ion conductivities of Li2O2 could support the growth and decomposition of the discharge product in our system. In addition, our results indicate that various morphologies of Li2O2 arise from the different current density and surface chemistry of CNT, and the growth and decomposition of the particle are related to the uneven distribution of the ionic and electronic conductivities of Li2O2.

Abstract:In typical charge and discharge cycling, electrodes may exhibit metastable phases with unusual ordering to repeatedly host and extract lithium-ion and electrons. This is a clear consequence of not enough time and/or energy available for such metastable phases to relax and transform into their equilibrium counterparts (1). Such metastable structures may exist only for a short duration, which makes it extremely difficult to measure or even identify them experimentally. Yet, they clearly play important roles in the battery figures of merit, such as cycling stability, voltage hysteresis, to capacity. The recent developments in in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) (2-6) has enabled us to observe de/lithiation processes at atomic resolution, identify metastable phases and monitor their continuous phase transformation, with the gradual addition of lithium-ions and electrons into the battery electrodes. Structural models of these metastable phases are derived from full DFT simulations, and seem to corroborate with high resolution phase contrast simulated images as compared to corresponding experimental ones. Li-Co-O system represents one of the most important materials for lithium-ion battery with rich chemistry and structures, i.e. LiCoO2 has been used as intercalated cathode in the first commercialized battery by SONY, while Co3O4 and CoO are found to be high-capacity anode materials with conversion reaction: MxOy + 2y Li+ + 2y e= xM0 + yLi2O. Here, Co3O4 nanoparticles grown on highly conductive multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) are employed as a model material system to study the structural evolutions with different amount of lithium inserted or reacted during electrochemical activation. The in-situ electrochemical lithiation experiments were followed until cobalt oxide nanoparticles are completely reduced into Co nanoparticles along with the formation of Li2O by conversion reaction and reverse de-lithiation until return back to cobalt oxide. When lithium-ions are introduced at lower rate, metastable lithium-inserted LixCo3O4 (x=1 to 5) crystalline phases are observed prior to formation of Co0 and Li2O clusters as the product of conversion reaction. At higher rate, lithium-ions can occupy any empty sites simultaneously that instantly break the Co3O4 spinel lattice bypassing the metastable crystalline phases. The amount of lithium-ions intake in a low rate is larger than that of the high rate, which provides insight on the charge/discharge rate and capacity relation. The presentation will cover intricacies of such metastable structures and the overall dynamics of electrochemical processes, as monitored by in-situ TEM imaging, spectroscopy and diffraction.

Abstract:Rechargeable non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries with a large theoretical capacity are emerging as a high-energy electrochemical device for sustainable energy strategy. Despite many efforts made to understand the fundamental Li-O2 electrochemistry, the kinetic process of cathodic reactions, associated with the formation and decomposition of a solid Li2O2 phase during charging and discharging, remains debate. Here we report direct visualization of the charge/discharge reactions on a gold cathode in a non-aqueous lithium-oxygen micro-battery using liquid-cell aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combining with synchronized electrochemical measurements. The real-time and real-space characterization by time-resolved STEM reveals the electrochemical correspondence of discharge/charge overpotentials to the nucleation, growth and decomposition of Li2O2 at a constant current density. The nano-scale operando observations would enrich our knowledge on the underlying reaction mechanisms of lithium-oxygen batteries during round-trip discharging and charging and shed lights on the strategies in improving the performances of lithium-oxygen batteries by tailoring the cathodic reactions.

Abstract:Aprotic lithium-oxygen battery has arguably become one of the most active new frontiers in energy storage systems in past decades. Aided by recent advances in highly sensitive in situ spectroelectrochemical techniques, a deepened mechanism understanding on the Li-O 2 chemistry during battery charge/discharge has been achieved, shedding light on potential optimization strategies to further improve the energy capabilities of Li–O 2 batteries. This article summarizes recent experimental efforts aimed at assessing the dynamic battery reactions at molecular level, including in situ electrochemical vibrational spectroscopies of Raman and FT-IR, and quantitative differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy approaches.

Abstract:An operando electrochemical stage for the transmission electron microscope has been configured to form a "Li battery" that is used to quantify the electrochemical processes that occur at the anode during charge/discharge cycling. Of particular importance for these observations is the identification of an image contrast reversal that originates from solid Li being less dense than the surrounding liquid electrolyte and electrode surface. This contrast allows Li to be identified from Li-containing compounds that make up the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. By correlating images showing the sequence of Li electrodeposition and the evolution of the SEI layer with simultaneously acquired and calibrated cyclic voltammograms, electrodeposition, and electrolyte breakdown processes can be quantified directly on the nanoscale. This approach opens up intriguing new possibilities to rapidly visualize and test the electrochemical performance of a wide range of electrode/electrolyte combinations for next generation battery systems.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium‐oxygen battery is one of the lithium-metal batteries with high theoretical specific capacity and strong safety. In order to explore the evolution process and electrochemical behavior of the battery, a study of combination of simulation and experiment is conducted in this paper. Firstly, solid-state lithium‐oxygen batteries with quartz tubes as the battery shell are designed for the experiment. FTIR and Raman results show that the lithium peroxide is produced as discharge products and SEM images show the product is accumulated on the surface of carbon particles and bound the carbon particles into blocks during the cathode evolution process. Then, a 1D multi-physics coupling field model referred to the experiment is established to investigate the electrochemical behavior of the battery. The calculated discharge curves are compared with the experimental discharge curves to verify the accuracy of the model. Using the model, the electrochemical behaviors, such as discharge product volume fraction, active three-phase interface, LATP phase potential and carbon phase potential, are analyzed. At last, the reasons for discharge termination are attributed to the accumulation of lithium peroxide and the decline of active three-phase interface.

Abstract:Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are energy storage devices that have received much attention because of their high energy density, high power capacity, and long lifetime. However, even though they are used widely in daily life, their cycling life and safety need further improvement. Understanding the reaction mechanisms and the structural degradation during the lithiation/delithiation process is a prerequisite to further improve the performance of LIBs. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) allows one to monitor structural evolution at the atomic scale in real time, thus providing an unprecedented opportunity to characterize the lithiation reaction pathway in a nonequilibrium state during battery cycling. In this article, the recent advances with respect to elucidating the relationships of dynamic structural evolution, reaction kinetics, and performance of different nanostructured electrode materials at the atomic scale using in situ TEM, based on three representative reaction mechanisms, are described. Specifically, the three systems are intercalation reaction, conversion reaction, and alloying reaction. Based on the advances that have been made, it is expected that in situ TEM will play an indispensable role on future design of LIBs electrode materials.
Revealing the Intrinsic Atomic Structure and Chemistry of Amorphous LiO 2 -Containing Products in Li–O 2 Batteries Using Cryogenic Electron Microscopy

Abstract:Aprotic lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) are promising energy storage systems characterized by ultrahigh theoretical energy density. Extensive research has been devoted to this battery technology, yet the detailed operational mechanisms involved, particularly unambiguous identification of various discharge products and their specific distributions, are still unknown or are subjects of controversy. This is partly because of the intrinsic complexity of the battery chemistry but also because of the lack of atomic-level insight into the oxygen electrodes acquired via reliable techniques. In the current study, it is demonstrated that electron beam irradiation could induce crystallization of amorphous discharge products. Cryogenic conditions and a low beam dosage have to be used for reliable transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization. High-resolution cryo-TEM and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis of toroidal discharge particles unambiguously identified the discharge products as a dominating amorphous LiO2 phase with only a small amount of nanocrystalline Li2O2 islands dispersed in it. In addition, uniform mixing of carbon-containing byproducts is identified in the discharge particles with cryo-EELS, which leads to a slightly higher charging potential. The discharge products can be reversibly cycled, with no visible residue after full recharge. We believe that the amorphous superoxide dominating discharge particles can lead researchers to reconsider the chemistry of LOBs and pay special attention to exclude beam-induced artifacts in traditional TEM characterizations.

Abstract:In this work, we fabricated an all-solid-state nano lithium battery MnFe2O4/graphene–Li2O–Li to understand the electrochemical Li-storage mechanism and performance of MnFe2O4 using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. We found that single-crystalline MnFe2O4 is converted into polycrystalline Li2O/Mn/Fe with large volume expansion upon discharge and subsequently into polycrystalline MnO/Fe3O4 with volume shrinkage upon charge. Reversible conversion between MnO/Fe3O4 and Li2O/Mn/Fe occurs during the following cycles with small volume changes. We also found that both MnO/Fe3O4 and Li2O/Mn/Fe can be tightly confined by graphene despite the volume change and particle pulverization, and that free space that buffers the volume changes still exists even at deep lithiation state. In situ TEM characterization also indicates that graphene is a good conductor for both Li ion and electrons. The combined conducting, buffering and confining effects of graphene revealed by in situ TEM characterization can well explain the role it plays in improving the electrochemical properties of MnFe2O4.

Abstract:The morphologies of crystalline lithium peroxide (Li2O2) discharge products in Li-O2 batteries have been shown to exhibit a dependency on subtle variations within the battery cell-operating environment including exposure to ambient air, moisture, or additives. As a result, imaging battery discharge products in real time under carefully controlled environmental conditions is a challenging obstacle for complete mechanistic understanding of Li2O2 growth and deposition during discharge in metal-air batteries. Here, we report the design of a completely enclosed cell for high-resolution in situ AFM imaging of Li-O2 battery discharge products. The air-and moisture-free electrochemical cell environment enabled the observation of different product morphologies during AFM imaging when LiTFSI in oxygen-saturated tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (tetraglyme) solvent was employed. This in situ AFM cell development brings complimentary information to various proposed mechanisms for lithium oxygen reaction.
