Abstract:Applying additives [e.g. rapeseed-oil residue (RR), wheat straw (WS), and wheat husk (WH)] to soils is a common agronomic practice used to improve soil water retention. A water retention evaluation and a soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) analysis are necessary given the widespread use of soils mixed with additives. The effects of RR, WS, and WH on water retention were investigated in this study. Based on the soil capillary theory, a modified van-Genuchten (M-VG) model was proposed for the SWCC simulation of the soils mixed with additives. The results indicated that RR most effectively improved soil moisture (average 16.0%) due to a maximum ratio of medium and small pores induced by RR, and a larger amount of hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups. Compared with the traditional van-Genuchten model, the established M-VG model, with two function terms (i.e. the pure soil term and the additive term), increased applicability to actual field soils mixed with additives. The SWCC fit the M-VG model well, providing a good application on loam mixed with RR, WS and WH at different application amounts. In addition, the proposed theoretical M-VG model can be simplified experientially to ease the fitting difficulty.
