Abstract:The sensitivity and stability are mainly factors to hold back the practical applications of Polypyrrole coated fabrics. In this paper, a flexible fabric strain sensor with high sensitivity, good stability and large deformation is reported. It is fabricated by depositing a nano-layer (200nm to 300nm) of polypyrrole on the fabric substrate at low temperature. Thickness and morphology of the conducting thin film on the surface of the fibers were examined by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The measurement of the conductivity change with strain shows the fabrics so prepared exhibits a high strain sensitivity of ~160 for a deformation as large as 50%, while its good stability is indicated by a small loss of conductivity after the thermal and humidity aging tests, and supported by the slight change in conductivity and sensitivity over a storage of eighteen months. The flexible strain sensor is expected to be a promising "soft" smart material with good sensing properties in the preparation of smart garment, wearable hardware and biomedical applications

Abstract:The switch-type humidity and water sensing composite material is fabricated by decorating carbonic pen ink on carbon fiber paper (CFP) substrate using a facile and efficient dip-coating method. The resultant pen ink/carbon fiber paper composites (PCFP) with varying ink loading have both flexible paper and electroconductive ink characteristics, which exhibit favorable mechanical strength as well as controllable surface resistivities (Rs). As a humidity sensor, flexible PCFP demonstrates ultrahigh humidity sensitivity, extraordinary hysteresis and an adjustable switch point. The relative electrical resistance change (Rrel) of PCFP remains almost constant at low RH and increases radically at humidity switch point, showing commendable humidity switch behavior. PCFP also displays such switch property when immersing in water and reliable repeatability render PCFP opportunity to be a liquid water molecule sensor. Therefore, the multifunctional PCFP with excellent sensitivity and prominent reproducibility can be used for humidity and water monitoring in wearable electronics and sensing applications.

Abstract:Sensitive and flexible sensors capable of monitoring physiological signals of human body for healthcare have been developed in recent years. It is still a challenge to fabricate a wearable sensor-integrated multifunctional performances and a good fit to human body. Here, an rGO and pen ink/PVA-layered strain-humidity sensor based on MS fabric is prepared through a cost-effective and scalable solution process. The conductive fabric as a strain sensor has a workable strain range (∼300%), ultrahigh sensitivity (maximum gauge factor of 492.8), great comfort, and long-term stability. Notably, a step increase in relative resistance variation will be achieved by controlling the coverage of an ink layer. Moreover, the reliable linear humidity-dependent resistance void of hysteresis and excellent repeatability renders conductive fabrics an opportunity as humidity sensors. Based on these superior multifunctions, the resultant conductive fabric can be applied to detect both human motions and skin humidity, showing potential in applications of wearable electronics for professional athletes.

Abstract:Corrosion resistant, durable, and lightweight flexible strain sensor with multiple functionalities is an urgent demand for modern flexible wearable devices. However, currently developed wearable devices are still limited by poor environmental adaptability and functional singleness. In this work, a conductive fabric with multifunctionality in addition to sensing was successfully prepared by assembling zero dimensional silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and onedimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) layer by layer on the surface of the elastic polypropylene nonwoven fabric (named PACS fabric). Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) added as binder materials favored strong interaction between conductive fillers and the fabric. Benefiting from the synergistic interaction among the conductive fillers with different dimensions and the fabric, the strain sensor based on the conductive fabric showed high sensitivity (GF up to 8064), wide detection range (0-200%), and excellent stability and durability (more than 10000 stretch-release cycles). Besides, the prepared conductive fabric showed superhydrophobicity (water contact angle = 154 degrees) with excellent durability. This ensured the performance stability of the fabric sensor in harsh environments. At the same time, the fabric also showed excellent photothermal conversion performance (90 degrees C at a power density of 0.2 W/cm2 within 20 s). The PACS fabric strain sensor proved excellent performance and environmental adaptability, revealing great potential to be applied in human motion monitoring, self-cleaning, biomedicine, and other fields.

Abstract:Abstract Traditional silicon semiconductor substrate based electronic manufacturing has the shortcomings of non-bending, poor biocompatibility, and high cost. Fabric is more suitable for wearable electronic substrate due to its advantages of flexibility, air permeability, and skin-friendliness. We studied the manufacture of the conductive circuit based on inkjet printing and electroless deposition technology and got excellent conductivity and high dimensional accuracy circuit on fabric substrates. Three kinds of commonly used fabric materials cotton, polyester/cotton and polyester are selected to study the key work of surface pre-treatment, inkjet printing circuit pattern, and electroless deposition. The synergetic effect of SU-8 and P4VP (poly-4-vinylpyridine) on fabric ensures that the pattern retains its original size rather than diffusing. The distance between adjacent electric lines is no less than 0.3mm. With the extension of copper deposition time, the copper deposition layer becomes more and more uniform and dense. Sheet resistance reached 0.01Ω after 2 hours of copper deposition. The performance of all three kinds of fabric is similar. And cotton fabric had the best water lock performance. This technology has great potential for promotion and development in the application of intelligent textiles in the future.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNT) with prominent electrical and mechanical properties are ideal candidates for flexible wearable devices. However, their poor dispersity in solvents greatly limits their applications as a conductive ink in the fabrication of wearable sensors. Herein, we demonstrate a kind of CNT-based conductive dispersion with high dispersity and adhesiveness using cellulose derivatives as the solvent, in which y-aminopropyl triethoxy silane as a cross-linking agent reacts with cellulose to form copolymer networks, and simultaneously it also acts as an initiator to induce the self-polymerization of dopamine. Based on the conductive CNT ink, we also demonstrated textile-based strain sensors by stencil printing and sponge-based pressure sensors by the dipping method. The textile-based strain sensors could respond to external stimuli promptly. Then, the strain sensors were encapsulated via polydimethylsiloxane with the expansion of working ranges from less than 20 to nearly 70%. The encapsulated textile sensors exhibited excellent sensing performance as wearable strain sensors to monitor human motions including smile, throat vibration, finger folding, wrist bending, and elbow twisting. The sponge sensors hold high sensitivity and excellent durability as well. The conductive CNT-based ink provides an alternative idea in the development of flexible wearable devices.
Fabrication of Wearable Strain Sensor by Using a Novel Hybrid Cu Ink Composed of Bimodal Cu Particle Ink and Cu-based Metal-Organic Decomposition Ink

Abstract:In this work, bimodal Cu particles have been synthesized by using 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)-based hybrid capping agent for the first time. A novel hybrid Cu ink is prepared by combining bimodal Cu particles with solvents and Cu-based metal-organic decomposition (MOD) ink composed of Cu(II) formate, AMP and octylamine. The printed Cu patterns (films) by using the hybrid Cu ink show resistivity as low as 60 μΩ•cm after sintering under mid processing conditions (e.g., sintering at 110°C for 20 min in nitrogen atmosphere). The results also show that sintered Cu films of the hybrid Cu ink have good adhesion property on glass, polyimide (PI) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates, and the flexible Cu circuits on flattening and bending PI or PET substrates play the function well, in terms of easily lighting LEDs (light emitting diodes) in the circuits. Finally, the wearable strain sensor fabricated by using the hybrid Cu ink can also be well used to monitor the movement of human finger. All these results show that the hybrid Cu ink has high potential for application in printed flexible electronics.
Flexible and hydrophobic nanofiber composites with self-enhanced interfacial adhesion for high performance strain sensing and body motion detection

Abstract:Flexible and electrically conductive fibric (fiber) composite (CFC) strain sensors are promising in smart wearable electronics. Challenges remain to develop CFC with strong interfacial interaction and excellent durability. Here, a facile and cost-efficient method is proposed to fabricate flexible and hydrophobic CFCs with self-enhanced interfacial adhesion based on ultrasonication induced carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) embedded onto the swelled polyurethane (PU) nanofiber membranes immersed in a mixed solvent. CBNPs were tightly decorated onto the nanofiber surface, while the electrical conductivity keeps stable during cyclic durability tests. The CBNPs improve the Young's modulus and tensile strength while maintain the outstanding stretchability of PU membrane. The CBNPs also endows the CFCs with hydrophobicity and photo-thermal conversion property. The stretchable CFC strain sensors show controllable sensitivity and cyclic stability, and can monitor various body motions. This work provides a new route to fabricate low-cost and high-performance strain sensors without using interfacial bonding agents.

Abstract:With the fast development of the smart lifestyle in recent years, simple and flexible body condition monitoring has become more and more important. However, currently, commercially available motion-sensing devices always lack flexibility or at a high cost. This article has fully explored the merits of a commercial and easily available material of carbon fiber powder (CFP) and prepared CFP-based screen printing inks. This conductive ink can be directly and quickly printed onto a variety of different flexible common substrates, such as paper, cotton fabrics, etc., to prepare flexible sensors. At the same time, as a result of the good photothermal performance and conductivity of CFP, the printed flexible sensors have fast and stable performance on thermal and human motion detection. The use of CFP as the smart element to construct a wearable device will offer a choice for the intelligent industry.

Abstract:Developing a cotton fabric sensing layer with good waterproofness and breathability via a low-cost and eco-friendly method is increasingly important for the construction of comfortable and wearable electronic devices. Herein, a waterproof and breathable cotton fabric composite decorated by reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbon nanotube (CNT), Cotton/rGO/CNT, is reported by a facile solution infiltration method, and we adopt such Cotton/rGO/CNT composite to develop a layer-by-layer structured multifunctional flexible sensor, enabling the high-sensitivity detection of pressure and temperature stimulus. Particularly, the multifunctional flexible sensor exhibits a high response toward tiny pressure, demonstrating salient superiority in the continuous and reliable monitoring of human physiological information. Concerning temperature sensing, a good linear response for the temperatures ranging from 28 to 40 °C is achieved by the multifunctional flexible sensor and gives rise to be successfully applied to the non-contact real-time monitoring of human respiration signal. Finally, an array consisting of multifunctional flexible sensors further demonstrates its feasibility in perceiving and mapping the pressure and temperature information of contact objects. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing cotton-based sensing layers that can effectively resist liquid water penetration and allow water vapor transmission, and offers reasonable insight for constructing comfort and multifunctional wearable electronics.

Abstract:Textile-based pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention due to their potential to detect vital signals in humans, enhance sports performance, and facilitate human–machine interactions. However, practical challenges, such as unstable assembly structures, weak interfacial bonds with functional materials, and incompatibility with current established finishing technologies in production, remain significant obstacles to their widespread applications. This research explores commercially available suede fabric as a promising substrate for pressure sensing. The conductive suede sensor was readily by integrating carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs) and polydopamine (PDA) and subsequently modifying it with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane to achieve a superhydrophobic surface. The resulting suede sensor, featuring a robust PDA-(C-MWCNTs)-HDTMS chemical configuration, exhibited satisfactory hydrophobicity, excellent stability, and repeatability, capable of detecting pulse, throat movement, and daily human motions. Furthermore, the properties of the suede sensor can be well preserved after 60 min of machine washing and ultrasonic cleaning, highlighting its potential in practical applications. This study provides an environmentally stable, lightweight, and well-structured substrate for high-performance electronic textiles suitable for large-scale production.

Abstract:Fabric strain sensors based on intrinsically conducting polymers (ICPs) have been extensively studied recently owing to their ease of preparation, unique properties and many potential applications. Research on ICP-based fabric strain sensors, including fabrication, performance and applications of the sensors, is summarized and reviewed in this paper. The conductivity and morphology of ICP-coated fabrics can be easily adjusted by controlling the synthesis conditions, leading to sensors with varied performances. Abstract:Wearable sweat electrochemical sensors have attracted wide attention due to their advantages of non-invasive, portable, real-time monitoring, etc. However, existing sensors still have some problems with efficient sweat collection. Microfluidic channel technology and electrospinning technology are commonly used to collect sweat efficiently, but there are some limitations such as complex channel design and multiple spinning parameters. Besides, existing sensors are mostly based on flexible polymers, such as, PET, PDMS, PI and PI, which have limited wearability and permeability. Based on the above, all fabric and dual-function flexible wearable sweat electrochemical sensor is proposed in this paper. This sensor uses fabric as the raw material to implement the directional transport of sweat and the multi-component integrated detection dual functions. Meanwhile, the high-efficiency collection of sweat is obtained by a Janus fabric, wherein one side of the selected silk is superhydrophobic graft treated and the other side is hydrophilic plasma treated. Therefore, the resulting Janus fabric can effectively transfer sweat from the skin side to the electrode, and the minimum sweat droplet can reach 0.2 μL to achieve micro-volume collection. Besides, the patterned sensor, made of silk-based carbon cloth, is fabricated using a simple laser engraving, which could detect Na + , pH, and glucose instantaneously. As a result, these proposed sensors can achieve good sensing performance and high-efficiency sweat collection dual functionality; moreover, it has good flexibility and comfortable wearability.

Abstract:Flexible sensors are becoming the focus of research because they are very vital for intelligent products, real-time data monitoring, and recording. The flat silk cocoon (FSC), as a special form of cocoon, has all the advantages of silk, which is an excellent biomass carbon-based material and a good choice for preparing flexible sensors. In this work, a flexible piezoresistive sensor was successfully prepared by encapsulating carbonized flat silk cocoons (CFSCs) using an elastic matrix polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The sensing performance of the material is 0.01 kPa−1, and the monitoring range can reach 680.57 kPa. It is proved that the sensor can detect human motion and has excellent durability (>800 cycles). In addition, a sensor array for a keyboard based on CFSCs was explored. The sensor has a low production cost and a simple preparation process, and it is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Thus, it may have potential applications in wearable devices and human–computer interactions.

Abstract:Piezoresistive pressure sensors have attracted much attention for their potential applications in health monitoring, wearable devices, electronic skin and smart robots. Herein, we report an innovative strategy to fabricate multilayer piezoresistive pressure sensors with polydimethylsiloxane anchored carbonized cotton fabric (PACCF). Due to the good conductivity of carbonized cotton fabric and the multilayer structure to construct three-dimensional conductive network, the sensor possessed not only a wide pressure detection range, but also an ultrahigh sensitivity of 13.89 kPa−1 (0–6 kPa). Moreover, the sensor also exhibited fast response and excellent repeatability even after 500 loading–unloading cycles. Importantly, the sensor was successfully applied for detecting pulses, airflow, weak vibration and various body motions. Additionally, the sensors integrated sensing matrix also realized mapping and identifying spatial pressure distribution. Our method to fabricate PACCF-based multilayer piezoresistive pressure sensor is simple, efficient and low-cost; no special equipment or chemicals is required, and cotton as main raw material is natural and renewable, which is very beneficial for large-scale production. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new tool to fabricate high-performance pressure sensors in the fields of healthcare and emerging intelligent electronics.
A dual-mode fiber-shaped flexible capacitive strain sensor fabricated by direct ink writing technology for wearable and implantable health monitoring applications

Abstract:Abstract Flexible fiber-shaped strain sensors show tremendous potential in wearable health monitoring and human‒machine interactions due to their compatibility with everyday clothing. However, the conductive and sensitive materials generated by traditional manufacturing methods to fabricate fiber-shaped strain sensors, including sequential coating and solution extrusion, exhibit limited stretchability, resulting in a limited stretch range and potential interface delamination. To address this issue, we fabricate a fiber-shaped flexible capacitive strain sensor (FSFCSS) by direct ink writing technology. Through this technology, we print parallel helical Ag electrodes on the surface of TPU tube fibers and encapsulate them with a high dielectric material BTO@Ecoflex, endowing FSFCSS with excellent dual-mode sensing performance. The FSFCSS can sense dual-model strain, namely, axial tensile strain and radial expansion strain. For axial tensile strain sensing, FSFCSS exhibits a wide detection range of 178%, a significant sensitivity of 0.924, a low detection limit of 0.6%, a low hysteresis coefficient of 1.44%, and outstanding mechanical stability. For radial expansion strain sensing, FSFCSS demonstrates a sensitivity of 0.00086 mmHg −1 and exhibits excellent responsiveness to static and dynamic expansion strain. Furthermore, FSFCSS was combined with a portable data acquisition circuit board for the acquisition of physiological signals and human‒machine interaction in a wearable wireless sensing system. To measure blood pressure and heart rate, FSFCSS was combined with a printed RF coil in series to fabricate a wireless hemodynamic sensor. This work enables simultaneous application in wearable and implantable health monitoring, thereby advancing the development of smart textiles.

Abstract:In recent years, the research of flexible sensors has become a hot topic in the field of wearable technology, attracting the attention of many researchers. However, it is still a difficult challenge to prepare low-cost and high-performance flexible sensors by a simple process. Three-dimensional spacer fabric (SF) are the ideal substrate for flexible pressure sensors due to its good compression resilience and high permeability (5747.7 mm/s, approximately 10 times that of cotton). In this paper, Thermoplastic polyurethane/Polypyrrole/Polydopamine/Space Fabric (TPU/PPy/PDA/SF) composite fabrics were prepared in a simple in-situ polymerization method by sequentially coating polydopamine (PDA) and Polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of SF, followed by spin-coating of different polymers (thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and Ecoflex) on the PPy/PDA/SF surface. The results showed that the TPU/PPy/PDA/SF pressure sensors prepared by spin-coating TPU at 900 rpm at a concentration of 0.3 mol of pyrrole monomer (py) and a polymerization time of 60 min have optimum sensing performance, a wide working range (0–10 kPa), high sensitivity (97.28 kPa−1), fast response (60 ms), good cycling stability (>500 cycles), and real-time motion monitoring of different parts of the body (e.g., arms and knees). The TPU/PPy/PDA/SF piezoresistive sensor with high sensitivity on a highly permeable spacer fabric base developed in this paper has promising applications in the field of health monitoring.

Abstract:In recent years, flexible electronic equipment has attracted considerable attention. Textile fabrics are widely used in manufacturing flexible pressure sensors because of their high flexibility and toughness. However, ordinary fabrics are electrically insulated, which limits their sensitivity to pressure. In this paper, cotton fabrics (CFs) with high conductivity were prepared by a simple two-step method. Firstly, the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) suspension was deposited on CFs by vacuum filtration, and then the copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) films were coated on the surface by magnetic filtered cathodic vacuum arc deposition technology (FVACD). The copper/reduced graphene oxide cotton (Cu/RGO/CF) and nickel/reduced graphene oxide cotton (Ni/RGO/CF) prepared by this method have good conductivity with a minimum resistance of 2 Ω/sq. Moreover, the RGO is closely combined with the metal layer, maintaining high conductivity after repeated washing. Highly conductive CFs can be applied to piezoresistive sensors. The research results show that the piezoresistive sensor based on composite conductive CFs has the advantages of high sensitivity, wide range (0–0.35 MPa), fast response and high stability. In addition, the sensor can realize real-time monitoring of human motion (such as the knee, wrist bending). In general, the effective washability and high conductivity of CFs coated with metal film and RGO have been successfully verified, making it one of the promising candidates for application in wearable electronic devices.Graphic abstract

Abstract:The construction of flexible circuits is a crucial and challenging aspect in the design and fabrication of fabric‐based flexible electronics, which hold significant potential for various applications. In this study, we successfully developed high‐precision and durable fabric‐based flexible circuits by ingeniously combining ultraviolet light (UV)‐curing technology with chemical plating. Specifically, a UV coating containing Ag/Fe3O4 catalysts was applied onto polyester fabric surface, followed by printing the designed circuit structure diagram onto the fabric using UV light‐directed curing of the coating, and fabric‐based flexible circuits were then fabricated through chemical plating process. The fabric‐based flexible circuits exhibit only minimal increases in resistance following durability testing, including bending (8000 times), abrasion (2000 times), high and low temperature stability (−30 to 60°C), and high temperature/humidity stability (65°C, RH = 95%, 48 h), which remains consistently stable. This developed technology holds immense potential across various applications for smart wearable devices.

Abstract:The inherent hydrophilicity, flammability and electrical insulation of pristine cotton fabric (CF) severely restrict their applications in many traditional fields including tents, umbrellas and outdoor jackets and some emerging fields such as wearable electronics. Herein, we report a facile approach to fabricate multifunctional CF with superhydrophobicity, flame-retardancy and electrical conductivity via layer-by-layer assembly and spray-coating. Specifically, the pristine CF was alternately covered with branched polyethyleneimine modified halloysite nanotubes (P-HNTs) and phytic acid (PA), followed by a sprayed layer of octadecylamine modified carboxylated carbon nanotube (CNT-ODA)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid coating. The obtained multifunctional CF exhibited superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162° and excellent surface stability. Owing to the physical barrier roles of the HNT layer, intumescent char layer by the N-P synergy of b-PEI and PA and the CNT/Si–C compounds after the pyrolysis of the outer CNT-ODA/PDMS layer, the SFRC-CF exhibited good thermal stability and outstanding flame-retardant performance. Furthermore, the SFRC-CF based piezoresistive pressure sensor had the advantages of stable resistance signal and good repeatability, and was successfully applied for detecting different human behavior even under wet environment. Our findings conceivably stand out as a new methodology to fabricate multifunctional cotton fabrics for practical applications in the fields of wearable devices and flexible electronics.
