Abstract:Phosphor-converted laser diodes (pc-LDs) have been very promising candidates in high-brightness white lighting. In this study, we conducted a comparative study of trans-missive and reflective pc-LDs with regard to the optical and thermal performances. To examine the optical performance, the color rendering index (CRI), luminous flux/efficiency, and average correlated color temperature (CCT) of both types were measured by an integrating sphere system. In addition, the phosphor temperature was measured by an infrared (IR) imager to evaluate the thermal performance. It was found that the reflective type exhibited higher luminous flux/efficiency because there was backward light energy loss in the trans-missive type. We also found that the CCT of the reflective type was more stable with varying current. Most importantly, the phosphor temperature of the trans-missive type could reach 282 degrees C under 900 mA, resulting in severe phosphor thermal quenching. In contrast, the reflective type possessed higher thermal stability with lower phosphor temperature and enables flexible optical-thermal design. Therefore, the reflective pc-LD can be more competitive than trans-missive type in the future high-luminance lighting industry.
