Abstract:The rapidly growing of data center energy consumption rates are contributing to concern about energy conservation. Reasonable airflow organization is an effective way to reduce the cooling system energy consumption and to upgrade the energy utilization efficiency. Comprehensive and accurate analyses are important for airflow organization optimization. This paper presents the entransy dissipation analysis method to analyze the influences of hot and cold air mixing and cooling air distributions on data center heat transfer process. The thermal resistance based on entransy dissipation is used to define three indexes to evaluate hot and cold air mixing, cooling air distributions and the integrated heat transfer performance. A sample data center is studied with the analytical results showing that the smaller the entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance is, the lower the average heat source temperature will be. Thus, the minimum thermal resistance principle is applicable to the analysis and optimization of data center heat transfer process. The three indexes can be used to guide the improvement and optimization of airflow organization.

Abstract:The cooling system plays an important role in high-efficiency energy utilization for data centers and airflow improvement is one of the most effective ways to reduce cooling system energy consumption. In this paper, the applicability of entransy analysis method is studied and compared with the exergy analysis method. The results show that the minimum entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance for the heat transfer between the cooling air and the racks always corresponds to the optimal system parameters for the data center cooling system, but the exergy analysis method is not always effective. Therefore, the entransy-dissipation-based thermal resistance is more suitable as the object parameter to optimize the airflow organization in a data center.

Abstract:With the rapid development of renewable energy, data center, new energy vehicle and so on, the power density of power electronics converters is continuously increasing. Higher power density means higher requirements for thermal dissipation system design. Thus, the design of cooling system is the key step to improve the power density of the power converters. Because of its simplicity and efficiency, the rectangular extruded-fin air cooling heat sink is the most common cooling system design in converters. This paper proposed an analytical model for air cooling heat sink which can help to better estimate chip temperature and design cooling system in an efficient way. Based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based simulation, the thermal resistance network accuracy is verified.
Rack-Embedded Cooling Strategy and Its Exergy Analysis for Reduction of Power Consumption in Thermal Management Data Center

Abstract:With the development of information society and the demand of high performance computing,the scale and integration density of data centers over the world are increasing very rapidly,which results in a sustained increase of heat dissipation power density as well as the cooling cost.Conventional method appears incapable in tackling this tough issue to meet the requirement of such developing trend.In this paper,a rack-embedded thermal management strategy to reduce the power consumption of a data center is proposed.An exergy-based analysis method is adopted to evaluate the cooling performance and efficiency of two strategies,which are respectively top-mounted and distributed evaporators inside the rack.The results show that the optimized new strategies are 0.04% and 1.05% higher than that of the traditional ones respectively,which indicates the advantage of the new method for thermal economy.This method is expected to be a promising strategy for future thermal management of data center.

Abstract:Researchers are giving increased attention to large space buildings such as airports and railway stations because of the high energy consumption of their indoor cooling systems. The indoor cooling system of a large space building is essentially a heat transfer process among several heat sources and heat sinks. Entransy analysis and T–Q diagrams are clear and direct methods for describing the heat transfer process in large space buildings. Based on entransy dissipation, the equivalent thermal resistance can be defined in order to evaluate the indoor cooling systems in large space buildings. Minimizing thermal resistance is the best way to achieve high-temperature cooling. Methods for reducing the equivalent thermal resistance from the heat sources to the heat sinks in large space buildings include simplifying the heat transfer process, reducing mixture loss among heat sources, minimizing unnecessary mixing of hot and cold fluids, and handling solar radiation directly. Based on this analysis, a radiant floor and displacement ventilation system is proposed. Compared with a conventional jet ventilation system, the radiant floor system has lower equivalent thermal resistance, especially for direct solar radiation. The new system was applied in Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, and it demonstrated approximately 34% better energy performance compared to the conventional system.

Abstract:A combined cooling solution is proposed to improve both thermal and energy performance for data centers with high heat density. Multi-stage heat pipe is introduced to make the internally cooled rack, which helps to illuminate the undesired mixing of hot and cold air, and makes a uniform distribution of indoor temperature. A water loop of multi cold sources is designed to make full use of waterside free cooling potentials. With the switchable and flexible operating mode, an energy efficient cooling can be expected. An operating data center in Beijing is studied and retrofitted using this solution. A comparative measurement is performed to validate the effectiveness of this combined cooling solution, which shows an improved indoor thermal environment and reduces annual cooling cost by approximate 46%. Abstract:This paper focuses on analyzing the thermal environment and optimizing energy consumption in data centers, which has largely omitted from previous studies. The thermal environmental of data centers is simulated and analyzed by utilizing the established "server-rack-room" multi-scale heat transfer numerical model. Based on this, the coupling simulation model of thermal environment and energy consumption in data centers is proposed to explore the relationship between them, and the corresponding optimization strategy is put forward. The energy consumption simulated by energy-environment coupled model and non-coupled model can reach a discrepancy of over 30 %, which indicates that the thermal environment impacts the power consumption of the data center significantly. Besides, the effect of several operational parameters of air conditioning system on the thermal environment and energy consumption of data center is analyzed. Through the particle swarm optimization algorithm, the optimal system parameters, which meet the requirements of thermal environment and lead to the lowest energy consumption, are found for typical cities in different climatic regions. The recommended settings include the supply air temperature of about 24 ∼ 26 °C, the air supply volume of 8 m 3 /s, and the temperature difference of about 3.5 °C between the supply air temperature and the supply chilled water temperature. Under the optimized parameter setting, the highest temperature of server decreases to below 71 °C, and the energy saving rate is more than 6 %.

Abstract:Proposes a distributed cooling system for thermal management of data center based on the analysis using least dissipation theory and match principle of heat exchange.Designs an internally cooled rack with multi-stage heat pipe loops to eliminate undesired air mixing.Further improvement of energy performance can be achieved by the combined water loop,which dynamically and effectively adjusts cooling load distribution among chillers and the cooling tower,according to the outdoor environment conditions,and makes full use of free cooling potentials.The measurement results of a retrofitted data center show a uniform indoor temperature and humidity distribution and reduced energy consumption by over 40%.

Abstract:Cooling system is one of the key components in data centers and consumes nearly half of the total energy. For the safety and efficiency of a data enter, cooling system should guarantee all the servers running in a suitable temperature. Thus, the cooling efficiency becomes lower as the occurrence of hot spots, because the whole cooling system will accordingly work in a strong cooling mode, which leads to overcooling. One of the key challenges toward this problem is to build an effective and efficient online task scheduling to balance the inlet temperature of the servers in a data enter. In this paper, we investigate the thermal model in a data enter, and we formulate the task placement problem to an optimization problem with the purpose to minimize the maximum inlet temperature of all servers. To get higher accuracy, we proposed a dynamic thermal model updated with the real data from temperature sensors. We solve the formulated problem in an approximate way and design a first-fit decreasing task placement algorithm with the idea of CPU budget. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of our algorithm are confirmed by experiments on a real test bed.

Abstract:Abstract The energy consumption for cooling electronic equipment in data centers using central systems is significant and will continue to rise. The motivation of the present research study is based on the need to determine optimization strategies to improve and optimize the thermal efficiency of data centers using a simulation-based approach. Here, simulation is used to model and optimize a proposed research data center for use as an environment to test equipment and investigate best practices and strategies such as containment and hybrid cooling. The optimization technique used in this study finds the optimal operating conditions and containment strategies of the data center while meeting specific thermal conformance criteria. More specifically, optimum supply airflow rate and temperature setpoint of cooling units are sought under different containment configurations, including both hot aisle and cold aisle containment strategies in both full and partial setups. The results of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations indicated a lower probability of hot spots with full hot aisle containment strategy in a data center operating at lower supply airflow rate and higher supply temperature setpoint. The optimization approach helped to determine a more efficient cooling system without the risk of under-provisioning. The study considered steady-state conditions with static heat load and fixed equipment layout. However, the generalized optimization process developed in the present study should add to the repertoire of tools presently used for the optimization of new air-cooled data centers.

Abstract:Absorption thermal energy storage system is a new technology with promising future. This contribution proposes a new perspective to analyze this kind system and introduces the entransy dissipation-based thermal resistance theory to optimize the system. The analogy between heat transfer and electric conductance, integration of the heat transfer and the phase change yield a new physical image and a direct mathematical model to describe the physical relation between the design requirements and the unknown design parameters, i.e. the heat transfer area, the heat capacity of each heat exchanger. Then the optimization problem converts to a conditional extremum problem applying the mathematical model. Finally, two examples are taken to testify the validity of the new method.

Abstract:The rapid growth in computing and data transmission has significant energy and environmental implications. While there is considerable interest in waste heat emission and reuse in commercial data centers, opportunities in academic data centers remain largely unexplored. In this study, real-time onsite waste heat data were collected from a typical academic data center and an analysis framework was developed to determine the quality and quantity of waste heat that can be contained for reuse. In the absence of a comprehensive computer room monitoring system, real-time thermal data were collected from the data center using two arrays of thermometers and thermo-anemometers in the server room. Additionally, a computational fluid dynamics model was used to simulate temperature distribution and identify "hot spots" in the server room. By simulating modification of the server room with a hot air containment system, the return air temperature increased from 23 to 46 °C and the annual waste heat energy increased from 377 to 2004 MWh. Our study emphasizes the importance of containing waste heat so that it can be available for reuse, and also, that reusing the waste heat has value in not releasing it to the environment.

Abstract:With the advent of 5th-generation mobile networks, the internal computing of data centers is very important. However, a server's calculations cause significant thermal problems. Therefore, this study focuses on the thermal analysis of a single rack in a data center. In this work, the airflow and temperature distributions in a single rack are examined numerically in detail. The computational fluid dynamics software is used to simulate the airflow field and temperature profile. The focus of the research is removal of heat from servers in the rack under different operating conditions and designs. The predicted results show that Case 2's size and 0.45 m of raised-floor depth would help to create a uniform airflow distribution at the same rate. Besides, the Return temperature index is used to evaluate the performance of data center. The results of Model 1 and 2 for three flow rate are presented and compared in details.

Solid Sorption Heat Pipe Coupled with Direct Air Cooling Technology for Thermal Control of Rack Level in Internet Data Centers: Design and Numerical Simulation

Abstract:The utilization of direct/indirect free cooling (natural cold source) method for data center (DC) cooling and thermal management system has great potential in reducing electric energy consumption. Integrating heat pipe indirect and passive heat transfer method with active vapor-compression refrigeration technique is considered as a promising and alternative solution. The proposal of solid sorption heat pipe is expected to alleviate the drawbacks of heat transfer limits in both conventional heat pipe and thermosyphon. Here, a novel dual-mode thermal control system coupled solid sorption heat pipe with direct air convection scheme for rack level cooling of DC is designed and three-dimensional calculation models are set up to simulate the flow and temperature fields for DC room level and rack level, respectively. Experimental results of solid sorption heat pipe with NaBr show that the maximum axial heat flux with different filing amount and different inclination angle are 913.3 kW/m(2) and 559.7 kW/m(2), respectively. The parameterized simulation results for rack level cooling of DC illustrate that when flow rate of supply air is 2 m/s and heat dissipation of single server reaches 1000 W, this novel dual-mode thermal management scheme could reduce the peak temperature of server from 75.8 degrees C to 68.8 degrees C. A case study based on typical DC scale further elaborates that the dual-mode thermal control oriented to rack level is feasible for energy-saving of DC cooling system. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Most industrial heat exchange processes are carried out between two fluids. Usually the thermal fluids are driven by pumps or fans. The power consumption of pumps and fans is quite high in the transport systems, especially in data centers. Nearly 60% of the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) system’s energy consumption is consumed by pumps and fans in winter. A lot of literatures discussed the heat transfer enhancement in heat transfer process but few focused on the energy consumption. In this paper, a new synergy optimization method is proposed to save energy in heat transfer process. The heat transfer constraint equations of the heat transfer process are established. Taking the energy efficiency as the objective function, the synergistic relationship between the power consumption and temperature difference is derived analytically by using variation principle. A synergy operation factor is defined to guide the practical operation optimization of heat transfer process. The closer the synergy operation factor to 1, the higher the system energy efficiency is. An experiment of a separated heat pipe system is carried out to verify the accuracy of the synergy optimization analysis. The synergy optimization analysis is implemented in a real data center, and the cooling system can save energy by 30.9% under test conditions.

Abstract:Forecasting data center cooling demand remains a primary thermal management challenge in an increasingly larger global energy-consuming industry. This paper proposes a dynamic modeling approach to evaluate two different strategies for delivering cold air into a data center room. The common cooling method provides air through perforated floor tiles by means of a centralized distribution system, hindering flow management at the aisle level. We propose an idealized system such that five overhead heat exchangers are located above the aisle and handle the entire server cooling demand. In one case, the overhead heat exchangers force the airflow downwards into the aisle (Overhead Downward Flow (ODF)); in the other case, the flow is forced to move upwards (Overhead Upward Flow (OUF)). A complete fluid dynamic, heat transfer, and thermodynamic analysis is proposed to model the system’s thermal performance under both steady state and transient conditions. Inside the servers and heat exchangers, the flow and heat transfer processes are modeled using a set of differential equations solved in MATLABTM. This solution is coupled with ANSYS-FluentTM, which computes the three-dimensional velocity, temperature, and turbulence on the Airside. The two approaches proposed (ODF and OUF) are evaluated and compared by estimating their cooling effectiveness and the local Entropy Generation. The latter allows identifying the zones within the room responsible for increasing the inefficiencies (irreversibilities) of the system. Both approaches demonstrated similar performance, with a small advantage shown by OUF. The results of this investigation demonstrated a promising approach of data center on-demand cooling scenarios.

Abstract:One of the key challenges in reducing the energy consumption of data centers is to improve the efficiency of air conditioning units. The efficiency is increased when the temperature of the supply air rises; however, the hot air recirculation and hot spots may limit the rise of temperature of the supply air to ensure normal operation of servers. To solve this problem, the energy equation is modeled to separate the thermal influence of each server or rack, and the temperature rise distribution (TRD) is proposed to illustrate the recirculation efficiency in data centers. Based on the TRD, two recirculation ratios are suggested to evaluate the recirculation of each rack in the data center. An algorithm is suggested to optimize the power distribution among racks to minimize the maximum temperature inside the data center, reduce the number of hot spots, and provide more space for increasing the temperature of the supply air. The metrics and algorithm are tested and proved efficient by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) case.
Three computational methods for analysing thermal airflow distributions in the cooling of data centres

Abstract:Purpose This aim of this work is to investigate different modelling approaches for air-cooled data centres. The study employs three computational methods, which are based on finite element, finite volume and lattice Boltzmann methods and which are respectively implemented via commercial Multiphysics software, open-source computational fluid dynamics code and graphical processing unit-based code developed by the authors. The results focus on comparison of the three methods, all of which include models for turbulence, when applied to two rows of datacom racks with cool air supplied via an underfloor plenum. Design/methodology/approach This paper studies thermal airflows in a data centre by applying different numerical simulation techniques that are able to analyse the thermal airflow distribution for a simplified layout of datacom racks in the presence of a computer room air conditioner. Findings Good quantitative agreement between the three methods is seen in terms of the inlet temperatures to the datacom equipment. The computational methods are contrasted in terms of application to thermal management of data centres. Originality/value The work demonstrates how the different simulation techniques applied to thermal management of airflow in a data centre can provide valuable design and operational understanding. Basing the analysis on three very different computational approaches is new and would offer an informed understanding of their potential for a class of problems.

Abstract:Integrated system of mechanical refrigeration and thermosyphon (ISMT) is an ideal solution for energy-saving of data centers. The performance of the thermosyphon mode of an ISMT is very important and has great effect on its annual energy-saving rate. To investigate and optimize the performance of the thermosyphon mode, a distributed-parameter model is built and verified by experimental results. With this model, the performance of different air flow rate and geometric parameters is studied. The results show that the cooling capacity and circulation flow rate both increase with air flow rate and riser diameter, and decrease with tube length. Combined with these performance simulation results, the annual working time of thermosyphon mode is also calculated for a small data center in Beijing. The method to achieve the optimal design is given for different design requirements.

Abstract:It is of great importance to improve the energy performance of the air-conditioning system for building energy conversation. Entransy provides a novel perspective to investigate the losses existing in the air-conditioning system. The progress of entransy analysis in the air-conditioning system is comprehensively investigated in the present study. Firstly missions and characteristics of the air-conditioning system are analyzed with emphasis on heat or mass transfer process. It is found that reducing the temperature difference, i.e. reducing the entransy dissipation helps to improve the performance. Entransy dissipations and thermal resistances of typical transfer processes in the air-conditioning system are presented. Characteristics of sensible heat transfer process and coupled heat and mass transfer processes are researched in terms of entransy dissipation analysis. Reasons leading to entransy dissipation are also clarified with the help of unmatched coefficient ξ . Principles for reducing the entransy dissipation and constructing a high temperature cooling system are summarized on basis of case studies in typical handling processes. It’s recommended that reducing mixing process, improving match properties are main approaches to reduce the entransy dissipation. The present analysis is beneficial to cast light on the essence of the air-conditioning system and propose novel approaches for performance optimization.
