Abstract:The recently proposed hybrid Mg-Li ion battery technology delivers good reaction kinetics and excellent safety features because it integrates the advantages of the Mg metal anode and the Li+ ion intercalation/conversion electrodes. The inexpensive and resource-abundant FeS is a suitable candidate as a cathode material due to its medium redox potential and high theoretical capacity; however, a conventional FeS cathode suffers from low electronic conductivity, low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Here, in this work, to overcome these drawbacks, a free-standing membrane electrode with FeS nanoparticles embedded in carbon nanofibers was designed and prepared via a facile electrospinning method. Additionally, because of the absence of inactive materials, such as the current collector and binder, the energy density was enhanced compared with that in the conventional batteries. The hybrid Mg-Li ion battery fabricated in this study can deliver a maximum energy density of similar to 300Wh kg(-1), which is superior to that of most conventional Mg ion batteries. An outstanding cyclic performance for up to 800 cycles with high coulombic efficiencies above 97% was demonstrated, and a specific capacity above 200mAh g(-1) was retained with a current density of 257mA g(-1). Abstract:The practical application of aqueous rechargeable batteries is hampered by the low energy density and poor cycle stability, which mostly arises from the corrosion of cathode current collector, exfoliation of active material, and narrow electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolyte. A light-weight and low-cost cathode current collector composed of graphite and carbon nanotube coated on nylon membrane exhibiting corrosion resistance and strong adhesion is developed. Also, a modified aqueous electrolyte with the addition of urea whose window is expanded to ≈3.2 V is developed that contributes to the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase on surfaces of electrodes. LiMn2 O4 /NaTi2 (PO4 )3 Li+ /Na+ hybrid ion battery using such aqueous electrolyte and current collector is demonstrated to cycle up to 10 000 times with low cost (60 dollars per kWh) and high energy density (100 Wh kg-1 ) for stationary energy storage and electronic vehicles applications.

Abstract:Mg(2+)/Li(+) hybrid batteries have recently been constructed combining a Mg anode, a Li(+)-intercalation electrode, and an electrolyte containing both Mg(2+) and Li(+). These batteries have been reported to outperform all the previously reported magnesium batteries in terms of specific capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability. Herein, we report the outstanding electrochemical performance of Mg(2+)/Li(+) hybrid batteries consisting of a one-dimensional mesoporous TiO2(B) cathode, a Mg anode, and an electrolyte consisting of 0.5 mol L(-1) Mg(BH4)2 + 1.5 mol L(-1) LiBH4 in tetraglyme. A highly synergetic interaction between Li(+) and Mg(2+) ions toward the pseudo-capacitive reaction is proposed. The hybrid batteries show superior rate performance with 130 mAh g(-1) at 1 C and 115 mAh g(-1) at 2 C, together with excellent cyclability up to 6000 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries show great application prospects in large‐scale energy storage because of their reliable safety and low cost. However, a key challenge in developing this battery system lies in its low energy density. Herein, a high‐energy manganese–metal hydride (Mn–MH) hybrid battery is reported in which a Mn‐based cathode operated by the Mn2+/MnO2 deposition–dissolution reactions, a hydrogen‐storage alloy anode that absorbs and desorbs hydrogen in an alkaline solution, and a proton‐exchange membrane separator are employed. Given the benefit derived from the high solubility and high specific capacity of the Lewis acidic MnCl2 in the cathode and the low electrode potential of the MH anode, this aqueous Mn–MH hybrid battery exhibits impressive electrochemical properties with admirable discharge voltage plateaus up to 2.2 V, a competitive energy density of about 240 Wh kg−1 (based on the total mass of the 5.5 m MnCl2 solution and the hydrogen storage alloy electrode system), good cycling stability over 130 cycles, and a desirable rate capability. This work demonstrates a new strategy for achieving high‐performance and low‐cost aqueous rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries have promising application in large-scale energy storage owing to their cost-effective, eco-friendly, high safety and good electrochemical performance. An aqueous rechargeable hybrid sodium/zinc battery with Zn anode, Na3MnTi(PO4)3 cathode and 0.5 mol L-1 CH3COONa and Zn(CH3COO)2 mixed electrolyte has been designed for the first time. The battery delivered a reversible and stable capacity of 95.0 mAh g−1 at 1.5 C for 50 cycles with a high and flat working voltage of 1.75 V vs. Zn2+/Zn. Impressively, the battery showed the excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability, which can be cycled at 10.0 C for 2000 cycles with a capacity retention of 93.6% and a reversible capacity of 55.6 mAh g−1 at 30.0 C. Meanwhile, the co-intercalation mechanism of hybrid Na+ and Zn2+ in the cathode is elucidated by cyclic voltammogram, ex-situ XRD, ex-situ XPS and Rietveld refinement analysis. This work gets insight into the charge/discharge processes of hybrid ions for NASICON-structured Na3MnTi(PO4)3, providing a feasible way to design cost-effective, high safety and long-term aqueous rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Mg ion batteries (AMIBs) show great potential in energy storage for their advantages of high capacity, abundant resource and environmental friendliness. However, the development of AMIBs is limited due to the scarcity of suitable anode materials. In this study, a new polymer anode material (PNTAQ) with flower‐like nanosheet structure is synthesized for aqueous Mg‐Na hybrid‐ion battery (AMNHIB). PNTAQ possess carbonyl functional groups which can be oxidized and reduced reversibly in aqueous solution containing alkaline metal ions. PNTAQ displays a discharge specific capacity of 245 mAh g‐1 at 50 mA g‐1 in 1 M MgCl2 + 0.5 M NaCl electrolyte, which is much higher than that in single 1 M MgCl2 or 0.5 M NaCl electrolyte. Even cycling at 1000 mA g‐1 for 1000 times, the capacity retention can still maintain at 87.2%. A full Mg‐Na hybrid‐ion cell is assembled by employing β‐MnO2 as cathode and PNTAQ as anode material, it exhibits a specific capacity of 91.6 mAh g‐1 at 100 mA g‐1. The polymer electrode material well maintains its framework structure during the discharge/charge cycling process of the hybrid‐ion battery.

Abstract:The magnesium-metal battery, which consists of a cathode, a Mg-metal anode, and a nonaqueous electrolyte, is a safer and less expensive alternative to the popular Li-ion battery. However, the performance of Mg batteries is greatly limited by the low electrochemical oxidative stability of nonaqueous electrolytes, the slow Mg2+ diffusion into the cathode, and the irreversibility of Mg striping and plating on the Mg metal anode. Here, we report the first Mg-ion battery using a Mg2+ aqueous electrolyte, nickel hexacyanoferrate cathode, and polyimide anode. The operation depends on Mg2+ intercalation–deintercalation at the cathode and reversible enolization at the anode, accompanied by Mg2+ transport between cathode and anode. The cell exhibits a maximum cell voltage of 1.5 V and a supercapacitor-like high power, and it can be cycled 5000 times. This system points the way to improved Mg-based rechargeable batteries.
A High Rate and Stable Hybrid Li/Na‐Ion Battery Based on a Hydrated Molten Inorganic Salt Electrolyte

Abstract:Taking into the consideration safety, environmental impact, and economic issue, the construction of aqueous batteries based on aqueous electrolyte has become an indispensable technical option for large-scale electrical energy storage. The narrow electrochemical window is the main problem of conventional aqueous electrolyte. Here, an economical room-temperature inorganic hydrated molten salt (RTMS) electrolyte with a large electrochemical stability window of 3.1 V is proposed. Compared with organic fluorinated molten salts, RTMS is composed of lithium nitrate hydrate and sodium nitrate with much lower cost. Based on the RTMS electrolyte, a hybrid Li/Na-ion full battery is fabricated from cobalt hexacyanoferrate cathode (NaCoHCF) and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) anode. The full cell with the RTMS electrolyte exhibits a fantastic performance with high capacity of 139 mAh g−1 at 1 C, 90 mAh g−1 at 20 C, and capacity retention of 94.7% over 500 cycles at 3 C. The excellent performances are contributed to the unique properties of RTMS with a large electrochemical window, solvated H2O free and high mobility of Li+, which exhibits excellent Li-ions insertion and extraction capacity of NaCoHCF. This RTMS cell provides a new economic choice for large-scale energy storage.

Abstract:Aqueous metal-ion batteries (AMIBs) are considered one of the potential energy-storage devices because of their high safety and low cost. Compared with traditional single-metal-ion (such as Mg or Li ion) AMIBs, the aqueous hybrid-ion batteries, such as Mg-Li hybrid-ion batteries (AMLIBs), exhibit improved Coulombic efficiency and long-term cycling stability owing to the co-intercalation/deintercalation of Mg2+ and Li+. In this study, organic polymer composite anode materials (PNTAQ@CNTs-5.7% and PNTAQ@rGO-4.4%) are designed and synthesized for AMLIBs, and they show excellent electrochemical performance characterized by up to 3000 cycles and nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. The AMLIB full cell assembled with PNTAQ@CNTs-5.7% as the anode and Mg2MnO4 as the cathode has a power density of 63.7 Wh kg(-1) under extremely high power density of 7674.7 W kg(-1), which shows great promising potential in the development of practical aqueous batteries.
Ultrathin Zn-free anode based on Ti3C2Tx and nanocellulose enabling high-durability aqueous hybrid Zn-Na battery with Zn2+/Na+ co-intercalation mechanism

Abstract:With low cost and high safety, aqueous zinc-based batteries have received considerable interest. Nevertheless, the excess utilization of zinc metal in the anodes of these batteries reduces energy density and increases costs. Herein, an ultrathin electrode of approximately 6.2 μm thick is constructed by coating Ti 3 C 2 T x /nanocellulose hybrid onto a stainless steel foil. This electrode is used as the Zn-free anode for aqueous hybrid Zn-Na battery, in which, a concentrated electrolyte is used to improve electrochemical reversibility. The Ti 3 C 2 T x /nanocellulose coating is found to improve the electrolyte wettability, facilitate desolvation process of hydrated Zn 2+ ions, lower nucleation overpotential, improve zinc plating kinetics, guide horizontal zinc plating along the Zn(002) facet, and inhibit parasitic side reactions. It is also found that the Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode material adopts a highly reversible Zn 2+ /Na + co-intercalation charge storage mechanism in this system. Thanks to these benefits, the assembled hybrid Zn-Na battery exhibits excellent rate capability, superior cyclability, and good anti-freezing ability. This work provides a new concept of electrode design for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) are a potential field for the energy storage of the future but are restricted by insufficient rate capability and rapid capacity degradation. Magnesium-sodium hybrid ion batteries (MSHBs) are an effective way to address these problems. Here, we report a new type of MSHBs that use layered sodium vanadate ((Na, Mn)V8O20 5H2O, Mn-NVO) cathodes coupled with an organic 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) anode in Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. During electrochemical cycling, Mg2+ and Na+ co-participate in the cathode reactions, and the introduction of Na+ promotes the structural stability of the Mn-NVO cathode, as cleared by several ex-situ characterizations. Consequently, the Mn-NVO cathode presents great specific capacity (249.9 mAh g-1 at 300 mA g-1) and cycling (1500 cycles at 1500 mA g-1) in the Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. Besides, full battery displays long lifespan with 10,000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. The rate performance and cycling stability of MSHBs have been improved by an economical and scalable method, and the mechanism for these improvements was discussed.

Abstract:Magnesium-ion batteries are promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage systems. However, their development is restricted by the shortage of advanced insertion-type positive electrodes. Hybrid-ion batteries, which combine the facile alkali metal ions extraction/insertion of the cathode with the low-cost and high-safety magnesium metal anode, can harness the individual benefits of both electrodes and achieve satisfactory electrochemical performance. We present a high-performance magnesium-potassium hybrid ion battery utilizing a magnesium-potassium hybrid ion electrolyte, a magnesium metal anode, and a Prussian blue analogue cathode. The battery exhibits a discharge voltage of up to 3.0 V and delivers a reversible specific capacity of 120 mAh/g, resulting in an impressive energy density of 360 Wh/kg (based on the cathode mass only). Moreover, the battery demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention rate of 96% after 500 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 50 mA/g. The reaction mechanism and energy storage mechanism of the hybrid ion battery were studied using various electrochemical testing methods and X-ray diffraction analysis. This work may provide new ideas and inspire the effort for the advancement of superior magnesium hybrid ion batteries.

Abstract:Nonaqueous rechargeable magnesium (Mg) batteries suffer from the complicated and moisture-sensitive electrolyte chemistry. Besides electrolytes, the practicality of a Mg battery is also confined by the absence of high-performance electrode materials due to the intrinsically slow Mg2+ diffusion in the solids. In this work, we demonstrated a rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion battery (AMIB) concept of high energy density, fast kinetics, and reversibility. Using a superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li superconcentration approach we expanded the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.0 V. More importantly, two new Mg ion host materials, Li3V2(PO4)3 and poly pyromellitic dianhydride, were developed and employed as cathode and anode electrodes, respectively. Based on comparisons of the aqueous and nonaqueous systems, the role of water is identified to be critical in the Mg ion mobility in the intercalation host but remaining little detrimental to its non-diffusion controlled process. Compared with the previously reported Mg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg ion cell delivers an unprecedented high power density of 6400 W kg while retaining 92% of the initial capacity after 6000 cycles, pushing the Mg ion cell to a brand new stage.

Low-Cost Aqueous Magnesium-Ion Battery Capacitor with Commercial Mn3O4 and Activated Carbon

Abstract:In this work, an aqueous rechargeable magnesium-ion battery capacitor with low cost and great application potential is constructed for the first time by using commercial spinel Mn3O4 as the cathode, coupling with activated carbon as the anode. Spinel Mn3O4 experiences a phase transformation to layered Birnessite nanoflakes during the electrochemical process in aqueous MgSO4 electrolyte, which acts as the actual cathode material. By decreasing the particle size of commercial Mn3O4 from several micrometers to about 50-100 nm through a facile milling method, the nanoparticles can more easily experience the phase transformation, which results in significantly enhanced electrochemical properties, with a high reversible capacity of about 81 mAhg(-1) at a current density of 0.5 Ag-1 after 300 cycles in a three-electrode system. For comparison, the Mn3O4 without milling exhibits only 33 mAhg(-1). Coupling with activated carbon, the full cell also exhibits excellent rate and cycle performance; for example, even after 6000 cycles at the rate of 0.5 Ag-1, it still delivers a high capacity of about 81 mAhg(-1). Such outstanding electrochemical properties are obtained without adding high cost components such as graphene or forming complex nanostructures. Its low cost and scalable preparation procedure make this approach very promising for safe energy storage.

Abstract:Magnesium-lithium hybrid batteries (MLHBs) using a dual-ion electrolyte and safe Mg anode have promising potential for high-performance energy storage. Here, we develop an MLHB constructed of a hollow multi-layered NiS/Co3S4/carbon cathode and an all-phenyl-complex/lithium chloride (APC-LiCl) electrolyte. The hollow multi-layered structure and carbon matrix accommodate volumetric expansion and facilitate electrolyte penetration. The APC-LiCl electrolyte displays a stable electrochemical window. The MLHB shows a high specific capacity of 398 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g-1, and a stable capacity at 1.0 A g-1 after cycling 500 times. Moreover, stable rate performance and temperature tolerance are achievable. These findings would enable this design to be promising for developing other hybrid battery systems.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn metal batteries are a promising candidate for low-cost, safe, and sustainable energy storage systems. Nonetheless, the practical application of such batteries is still impeded by the inferior Zn anode performance and instability of the cathode. Herein, we investigate the performance of an aqueous Zn‖LiMn 2 O 4 (Zn‖LMO) hybrid battery with a bi-salt (ZnSO 4 and Li 2 SO 4 ) electrolyte modified with a low dosage of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG200) and MnSO 4 . The PEG additive effectively inhibits water decomposition, mitigates Zn metal corrosion, and promotes the in-plane growth of hexagonal Zn flakes. As a result, the reversibility of Zn plating/stripping and the long-term cyclability of the Zn‖LMO hybrid battery can be substantially enhanced in the modified electrolyte. Specifically, in our optimized electrolyte ZL-8% PEG-0.1 Mn, the Zn‖LMO hybrid battery exhibits an initial capacity of 91.2 mA h g −1 and a capacity retention of 50% in 500 cycles at 2C, along with improved coulombic efficiency and self-discharge behavior. This dual-additive strategy can be used to design low-cost, highly reversible, safe, and long-cycling Zn–Li hybrid-ion batteries for practical applications.

Abstract:This work proposes a dual-cross-linked gel solid electrolyte (SE), here defined as Zn-re-inforced sodium alginate-polyacrylamide SE (Zn-reinforced SA-PAM SE), in which Na+ and Zn2+ coexist. The SE shows a high conductivity of 19.74 mS cm-1. Compared to the pure PAM gel, the tensile strength and compressive strength of Zn-reinforced SA-PAM SE are significantly enhanced to be 674.28 kPa and 16.29 MPa, respectively, because of the strengthening mechanism of Zn2+ cross-linked SA. Based on such a robust electrolyte, a novel hybrid cell is developed by involving Na0.5FeFe(CN)6-carbon nanotube composites (PB@CNT) as the Na+ intercalation-type cathode and metallic Zn as the plating anode. The hybrid cell shows an extremely high stability for 10,000 cycles with a record little capacity loss of 0.0027% per cycle, as Zn-reinforced SA-PAM SE successfully inhibits free water molecules from occupying low-spinning metallic sites (Fe-C) in Na0.5FeFe(CN)6. Ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the dissolution of Na0.5FeFe(CN)6 is highly reduced by 79.5%. It is further noted that the corrosion and dendrites at the Zn2+/Zn plating anode are greatly hindered for the robust electrolyte. This work gives a pathway for the development of new aqueous ion batteries.

Abstract:Owing to their high volumetric capacity, reasonably low redox potential, and budget friendliness, manganese metal batteries (MnMBs) are excellent candidates for batteries with a high energy -to -price ratio. However, since there is no suitable electrolyte ensuring reversible Mn plating/stripping due to the low redox potential of the Mn 2+ /Mn redox couple and the strong interaction between charge -dense Mn 2+ ions and solvents, the development of MnMBs has been largely constrained. Herein, a halogen -mediated non -aqueous electrolyte (HM-NAE) is developed to enable highly reversible Mn plating/stripping. Benefiting from this halogen -mediated mechanism, the asymmetric Mn cell can cycle stably more than 1,000 h with a Coulombic efficiency close to 100%. Moreover, a Mn|HM-NAE|Mo 6 S 8 full cell with high electrochemical performances is constructed and fully understood. This work offers a new avenue to the development of rechargeable, non -aqueous MnMB through electrolyte engineering, which can also shed light on other multivalent metal batteries and electroplating industry.

Abstract:A hybrid aqueous rechargeable battery with Na3V2(PO4)3 as cathode and metal Zn as anode has been proposed. Na3V2(PO4)3 is co-incorporated by carbon and reduced graphene oxide. The battery delivers a capacity of 92 mAh g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1 with a high and flat operating voltage of 1.42 V. It exhibits a capacity of 60 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 2000 mA g−1, indicative of excellent rate capability. Such inexpensive and safe battery shows an energy density as high as 112 Wh kg−1, demonstrating that it is potential for future application in large-scale energy storage.
