Abstract:A novel composite nonwoven separator exhibiting high heat resistance, high ionic conductivity and high lithium ion transference number is fabricated by a simple dip -coating and heat treatment method. The thermal stable polyimide (PI) nonwoven matrix is chosen as a mechanical support and contributes to improving the thermal shrinkage of the composite nonwoven separator (abbreviated as IACS). The cross linked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) PAMPS(Li+) gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), lithium ion sources of a single ion conductor, is introduced into the PI nonwoven matrix and acts as a functional filler. This PAMPS GPE is proved to be able to provide internal short circuit protection, to alleviate liquid electrolyte leakage effectively, to supply more lithium ions dissociating from PAMPS (Li+) by liquid electrolyte solvent, to contribute a more stable interfacial resistance, and thus resulting in an excellent cyclability. More notably, the migration and mobility rate of anions could be hindered by the SO3 group in the PAMPS (Li+) polymer based on electrostatic interaction, giving rise to a very high lithium ion transference number. These fascinating characteristics endow the IACS a great promise for the application in the high power and high safety lithium ion batteries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Lithium resources are attractive for different applications because of their specific properties. Therefore, it is more significant to find a cost-effective and environment-friendly method to selective adsorption and recovery of Li+. In this work, a renewable and easy degradable CA/CS hybrid membrane was modified with polydopamine as adhesion layer to anchored TiO2. The simple imprinting process could be realized by hydrolysis polymerization. The adsorption process followed Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation were researched in detail. The results displayed the maximum adsorption capacity is 20.08 mg g(-1) for Li+. The selectivity factors of Li+ to Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ are 1.78, 2.43, 2.60 and 3.61, respectively, which mainly attributed to imprinting effect. The LIICMs also exhibited the superior reusability and durability. Thus, the LIICMs provide a powerful tool for selective separation and recovery of Li+ from mixed solutions.

Abstract:Ion imprinted polymer (IIP) on the surface of magnetic carbon nanospheres, using N-propylacrylamide and benzo-12-crown 4-ether (B12C4) as bi-functional monomers, is designed and synthesized for the selective recognition and recovery of Li + from aqueous medium. The adsorption behaviors of Li + -IIP including adsorption kinetics, isotherms, selective recognition, and regeneration are investigated in detail by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The adsorption capacity of Li + -IIP towards Li + reaches a maximum value of 23.46 mg g −1 at 25 ̊C within 60 min. The Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models manifest the apparent adsorption behavior dominated by single layer chemisorption. The Li + -IIP realized selective adsorption of Li + against Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ , and Fe 3+ in their coexistence solution. It is reused five times without a significant decrease with the assistance of externally applied magnetic field for solid/liquid separation. The recognition mechanism of Li + -IIP towards Li + is the combined action of dehydration effect, electrostatic attraction, and size and imprinting effect, as identified by theoretical simulated calculation based on density functional theory and experimental data. The temperature-responsive adsorption of Li + -IIP towards Li + facilitates the adsorption/desorption operations. Li + -IIP shows good separation from the treated solution by applying an external magnetic field. This work provides new insights into the recovery of lithium.

Abstract:A novel lithium ion imprinted membrane (Li+-IIM) was synthesized by unipolar pulsed electropolymerization, using lithium ion as template ion, 2-hydroxymethyl-12-crown-4 ether as capture agent, pyrrole as conductive agent and crosslinking agent. The morphology and structure of the products were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. The adsorption behaviors were detected by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. At pH = 1.0, the maximum adsorption capacity of Li+-IIM towards lithium ion reached 16.40 mg g−1 in 40 mg L−1 Li+ solution, within 80 min. The resulting Li+-IIM exhibited excellent selectivity for Li+ because the selectivity coefficients of Li+ with respect to Na+, K+, Mg2+, Al3+ and Fe3+ are 4.20, 4.11, 4.13, 4.30 and 4.28, respectively. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of Li+-IIM still maintained 95.88%, indicating that the obtained imprinted membrane has excellent regeneration ability.

Abstract:Due to the importance of lithium isotopes in the nuclear energy industry, there are increasing number of researchs on the lithium isotopes separation in recent years. However, the adsorbents used for lithium isotopes separation suffer from the low adsorption capacity and isotopes separation factor in aqueous phase, and is difficult to meet the requirements for industrial lithium isotopes production. In this work, two types of calix[4] arenes with different rim groups were incorporated into the polymer backbone. Both calix[4]arene decorated PIMs exhibited good lithium adsorption capacities in aqueous phase. Among them, 4-tert-butyl-calix[4]arene decorated PIM showed excellent lithium isotopes separation performance with a maximum lithium adsorption capacity of 67.99 mg & sdot;g- 1 and an isotopes separation factor of 1.034 +/- 0.003 in aqueous phase. The ease of preparing and stable cycling performance makes it potentially useful for industrial lithium isotopes production.

Abstract:The adsorption of lithium ions(Li+) and the separation of lithium isotopes have attracted interests due to their important role in energy storage and nuclear energy, respectively. However, it is still challenging to separate the Li+ and its isotopes with high efficiency and selectivity. A novel cellulose-based microsphere containing crown ethers groups (named as MCM-g-AB15C5) was successfully synthesized by pre-irradiation-induced emulsion grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and followed by the chemical reaction between the epoxy group of grafted polymer and 4 '-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 (AB15C5). By using MCM-g-AB15C5 as adsorbent, the effects of solvent, metal ions, and adsorption temperature on the adsorption uptake of Li+ and separation factor of Li-6/Li-7 were investigated in detail. Solvent with low polarity, high adsorption temperature in acetonitrile could improve the uptake of Li+ and separation factor of lithium isotopes. The MCM-g-AB15C5 exhibited the strongest adsorption affinity to Li+ with a separation factor of 1.022 +/- 0.002 for Li-6/Li-7 in acetonitrile. The adsorption isotherms in acetonitrile is fitted well with the Langmuir model with an ultrahigh adsorption capacity up to 12.9 mgg(-1), indicating the unexpected complexation ratio of 1:2 between MCM-g-AB15C5 and Li+. The thermodynamics study confirmed the adsorption process is the endothermic, spontaneous, and chemisorption adsorption. As-prepared novel cellulose-based adsorbents are promising materials for the efficient and selective separation of Li+ and its isotopes.

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of batteries, ceramics, glass and other industries, the demand for lithium has increased rapidly. Due to the rich lithium resources in seawater and salt-lake brine, the question of how to selectively adsorb and separate lithium ions from such brine has attracted the attention and research of many scholars. The Li-ion sieve stands out from other methods thanks to its excellent special adsorption and separation performance. In this paper, mesoporous titanium dioxide and lithium hydroxide were prepared by hydrothermal reaction using bacterial cellulose as a biological template. After calcination at 600 °C, spinel lithium titanium oxide Li2TiO3 was formed. The precursor was eluted with HCl eluent to obtain H2TiO3. The lithium titanate were characterized by IR, SEM and X-ray diffraction. The adsorption properties of H2TiO3 were studied by adsorption pH, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherm and competitive adsorption. The results show that H2TiO3 has a single-layer chemical adsorption process, and has a good adsorption effect on lithium ions at pH 11.0, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 35.45 mg g−1. The lithium-ion sieve can selectively adsorb Li+, and its partition coefficient is 2242.548 mL g−1. It can be predicted that the lithium-ion sieve prepared by biological template will have broad application prospects.

Abstract:A new type of Zn2+ ion-imprinted polymer (Zn2+-IIP) was synthesized on the surface of attapulgite, displaying high affinity and selectivity to Zn2+. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) revealed Zn2+-IIP to be an organic-inorganic hybrid polymer, with Zn2+ imprinted cavities formed by CTS groups and connected to the surface of the attapulgite by A-187 cross-linked network. The adsorption kinetic investigation showed that the adsorption of Zn2+ on Zn2+-IIP was a pseudo-second-order process. The maximum adsorption capacities of Zn2+ were 0.536, 0.665, 0.715, and 0.722 meq/g at 288, 298, 308, and 318 K, respectively, where the activation energy, E-a, was evaluated as 23.8 kJ/mol. By thermodynamic study, Delta H degrees and Delta S degrees of the adsorption were determined as 30.862 kJ/mol and 108.664 J/mol K, respectively, while the negative Delta G degrees decreased with rising temperatures, indicating that the adsorption process was feasible and spontaneous. The adsorption selectivity of the Zn2+-IIP was also investigated via competitive adsorption of Zn2+, Cd2+, Cs+, Co2+, Ba2+, Sr2+, and Pb2+ from a mixture, demonstrating that Zn2+-IIP had the capability of recognizing Zn2+ with high affinity and selectivity. The study of multi adsorption-desorption cycles showed that the Zn2+-IIP can be reused many times without a significant decrease in the adsorption capacity.

Abstract:The extraction of Li+ from liquid lithium resources is a pivotal focus of current research endeavors. Attapulgite (ATP), characterized by its distinctive layered structure and inherent ion exchange properties, emerges as an exceptional material for fabricating lithium-ion sieve. Ion-imprinted chitosan/ATP composite materials are successfully synthesized, demonstrating efficacy in selectively absorbing Li+. The results emphasize the rich functional groups present in H-CTP-2, enhancing its absorbability and selectivity, with an adsorption capacity of 37.56 mg•g-1. The adsorption conforms to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Li+ coordination involves amino and hydroxyl group, indicating a chemisorption process. Furthermore, the substantial pore structure and significant specific surface area of ATP significantly promote Li+ adsorption, suggesting its participation not only in chemisorption but also in physical adsorption. The fabricated ion-imprinted materials boast substantial adsorption capacity, exceptional selectivity, and rapid kinetics, highlighting their potential for effectively separating Li+ from aqueous solution.

Abstract:A magnetic carbon-based lithium ion-imprinted material (Li+-IIP-Fe3O4@C) with a high Li+ adsorption selectivity was designed and prepared by a surface ion imprinting method, using magnetic carbon nanospheres (Fe3O4@C) as the carrier and 2-hydroxymethyl-12-crown-4 as the adsorption unit. First, Fe3O4@C was silanized by γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane to obtain Si-Fe3O4@C which was then functionalized with methacrylic acid (MAA), followed by polymerization to obtain PMAA-Fe3O4@C with a regular morphology and a high degree of MAA grafting. Finally, 2-hydroxymethyl-12-crown-4 was grafted onto the surface of PMAA-Fe3O4@C in the presence of LiClO4 under catalysis by p-toluenesulfonic acid. This was cross-linked by ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and eluted by a HNO3 solution to obtain Li+-IIP-Fe3O4@C. The kinetic adsorption and isothermal adsorption results for this material show that the adsorption of Li+ conforms to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and has Langmuir isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacity of Li+-IIP-Fe3O4@C for Li+ is 22.26 mg g-1 at 25°C. The selection factors of Li+ against Na+, K+ and Mg2+ are 8.06, 5.72, and 2.75, respectively. The Li+ adsorption capacity of Li+-IIP-Fe3O4@C decreases by only 8.8% after six adsorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating an excellent regeneration capability and making it very useful for lithium recovery.

Abstract:Nanofiber membranes were successfully prepared with crown ether (CE) functionalized graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by low-temperature thermally induced liquid–liquid phase separation. The physical and chemical properties and adsorption performance of nanofiber membrane were studied through SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and static adsorption experiments. The results show that the specific surface area of the nanofiber membrane is as high as 101.5 m2∙g−1. The results of static adsorption experiments show that the maximum adsorption capacity of the nanofiber membrane can reach 168.50 mg∙g−1 when the pH is 7.0. In the selective adsorption experiment, the nanofiber membrane showed high selectivity for Li+ in salt lake brine. After five cycles, the material still retains 88.31% of the adsorption capacity. Therefore, it is proved that the material has good regeneration ability.

Abstract:To address the limitations of ion-sieve powder in industrial applications and to facilitate the industrial application of lithium extraction through ion sieves, this study utilized the solvent exchange method to prepare a PVC/PAN-H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 lithium ion-sieve membrane, which exhibited both stable mechanical properties and excellent hydrophilicity. The membrane structure was characterized by XPS, FT-IR, BET, SEM, and other analytical techniques. The results revealed the presence of hydrophilic cyano groups (–C≡N) in the blend ion-sieve membrane, accompanied by micropores with dimensions ranging from 20 nm to 40 nm. Under the conditions of PVC:PAN = 7:3, the binder concentration of 13%, and H 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 content of 25%, the adsorption capacity of the ion-sieve membrane reached 1261.5 mg/m 2 . The Langmuir adsorption isothermal model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicated that the adsorption process of Li + followed a multi-step controlled monolayer chemisorption process. Simultaneously, the ion-sieve membrane demonstrated exceptional selectivity and remarkable cycle stability for Li + in the multi-ion coexistence system. This study provides guidance for the excellent application of lithium ion-sieve membranes in efficiently recovering Li + from Salt Lake brine.

Abstract:A facile strategy to fabricate macroporous polymeric foam composites with uniformly distributed lithium-ion sieves (LIS) was fabricated toward lithium ion (Li+) selective recovery. With LiMn2O4 nanoparticles as stabilizers, oil-in-water (o/w) high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) were prepared, and then a series of porous hydrophilic materials containing LIS () was obtained by the polymerization of water-soluble monomers in the Pickering HIPEs and followed by acid pickling. Lithium-ion adsorption was conducted by flowing lab made seawater through a monolith. The exhibited a high adsorption capacity (∼35.6 mg/g (LiMn2O4)) and fast adsorption kinetics (the equilibrium time was ∼3.0 h). The kinetics data and fitting them by a pseudo-first-order model showed that the loading of LIS onto polyHIPE had little influence on the adsorption rate, and the uptake of Li+ onto was an ion exchange or chemical adsorption control process. After the Li+ was extracted by washing the foam with a 0.5 mol/L HCl aqueous solution, the could be reused for recovery of Li+ from seawater. Abstract:In this study, a cesium ion imprinted polymer (Cs(I)-IIP) was prepared by free radical thermal polymerization using 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) as ligand, methacrylic acid (MAA) as functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinking agent, which can be used for adsorption and separation of cesium ions from low-concentration solutions. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm results showed that the adsorption of Cs + fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption of Cs + on Cs(I)-IIP was the monolayer chemical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was 84.21 mg·g − 1 . The selective adsorption properties are performed in Cs + , Li + , Na + , and K + multicomponent systems. The results showed that the Cs(I)-IIP has a high selectivity in the presence of coexisting Li + , Na + , and K + , and the selectivity coefficients ( K' ) of Cs(I)-IIP for Cs + /Li + , Cs + /Na + , Cs + /K + are 2.1, 1.56, and 1.33, respectively. The high adsorption capacity and selectivity are attributed to the introduction of imprinting technology to form specific Cs + recognition adsorption sites, and the 18C6 cavity was easier to recognize Cs + in the competitive adsorption process. Finally, the Cs(I)-IIP can be regenerated and reused for 10 times with the adsorption capacity only decreased by 8.1%, indicating that the polymer has good reuse performance.

Abstract:Effective modification strategies contribute to high adsorption capacity, separation efficiency and anti-fouling properties of ion-imprinted membranes. The design of a homogeneous and hydrophilic interlayer between the substrate membrane and ion-imprinted layer is crucial factor for the excellent performance of ion-imprinted membranes. In this study, a novel multilayered interlayer (SiO2@SP-PDA) was developed and uniformly coated on the substrate surface (PVDF membrane). The polydopamine (PDA) prepared via oxidation of sodium periodate (SP-PDA) increases the uniformity of SiO2@SP-PDA modification, which reduces the agglomeration of the ion-imprinted layer, and thereby boosts the adsorption capacity to 231.77 mg·g−1. The prepared ion-imprinted membrane (SiO2@SP-PDA-IIM) exhibits a favorable anti-fouling property due to the incremental hydrophilicity and the presence of SiO2 nano interlayer. Based on the XDLVO theory, it can be deduced that the SiO2 modification increases the membrane surface electron donor tension (γ−), which plays an essential role in enhancing the anti-fouling property of SiO2@SP-PDA-IIM. In this paper, the design of multilayered structure is of great significance to make the ion-imprinted membrane be a potential candidate for Li+ efficient separation in natural water.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel ion-imprinted membrane (SP-IIM) was prepared by combining graft polymerization with chemical modification and from polydopamine (PDA) oxidized by sodium periodate (SP-PDA) as the interface adhesion layer. The PDA was oxidized by sodium periodate at pH 5.0, causing it to undergo extensive cross-linking within the adhesion layer to provide better chemical stability for improving the reusability of the membrane. The flaky microstructure of the SP-PDA provided more surface area for the loading of 12-Crown-4 (12C4). The optimal adsorption capacity of the SP-IIM for Li+ was 42.58 mg·g−1 after incubating the membrane in a 200 mg·L–1 solution of Li+ for 180 min. The kinetics and isotherm data of the adsorption of Li+ onto the SP-IIM were fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model, respectively. Through selective adsorption experiments, the optimal selective separation factors of Li+/Mn2+, Li+/Co2+, Li+/Ni2+ were 6.71, 5.84 and 3.03, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on the coordination of metal cations (Li+, Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+) by 12C4, the results of which showed that the weak binding of Li+ to 12C4, as well as the favorable dehydration of Li+, made it easier for Li+ to be coordinated by 12C4 in a multicomponent solution containing Li+, Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+. The oxidation of the PDA by sodium periodate caused significant intermolecular cross-linking within the SP-PDA layer to reduce the possibility of the ion-imprinted layer detaching from the membrane, thereby increasing the reusability of the SP-IIM. After five repeated adsorption–desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity of the SP-IIM only decreased by 4.6%, which indicated that the SP-IIM was highly reusable. This work improved the adsorption capacity and reusability of ion-imprinted membranes by changing the microstructure of the interface adhesion layer, which was of great significance to the further development of ion-imprinted membranes.

Abstract:In recent years, ion-imprinted polymers have gained significant attention and are extensively utilized owing to their high selectivity toward target ions. For this research, Pb(II) ions were used as the template ions, polyamide-amine dendrimers as the curing agent, epoxy resin as the carrier and combined with ion-imprinting technique in the preparation of Pb(II)-imprinted polymer (Pb(II)-IIP). Systematic adsorption experiments were used to investigate the impact of the adsorbent on the adsorption performance of Pb(II) ions. The composition of the adsorbent was further studied by FT-IR, SEM and other characterization techniques. The maximal adsorption capacity at pH = 5 and T = 318 K was calculated to be 138.8 mg/g. In the coexistence of multiple ions, the Pb(II)-IIP showed high selectivity for Pb(II) adsorption. Pb(II) was still removed at a rate of more than 91% after five cycles of experiments, indicating good reusability.

Abstract:Porous liquids (PLs) are a novel material that combines the advantages of porous solids and liquid fluidity. In this study, we propose an imprinted porous liquid (IPL) with imprinted polymers as the porous framework and a mixture of TOP + FeCl3 as sterically hindered solvents. Quantum chemical computations and characterization results demonstrate the presence of unoccupied pore structure in IPLs. The prepared IPLs exhibit excellent selective adsorption and extraction performance for lithium extraction, achieving a Li/Mg separation factor of 1540 and a single‐stage Li+ extraction efficiency of 86%. The Li+ extraction efficiency remains above 84% even after eight cycles. Analytical characterization along with quantum chemical computations elucidates the mechanism underlying the coupling between extraction and adsorption in IPLs, enabling efficient lithium extraction. By combining imprinting technology with PLs, IPLs expand upon existing frameworks for PLs materials while providing new insights for designing functional solvents.
