Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to study the ruthenium porphyrin-catalyzed oxidation of styrene to generate an aldehyde. The results indicate that two reactive oxidants, dioxoruthenium and monooxoruthenium-superoxo porphyrins, participate in the catalytic oxidation. In the mechanism, the resultant monooxoruthenium porphyrin acts in the tandem epoxide isomerization (E-I) to selectively yield an aldehyde and generate a dioxoruthenium porphyrin, thereby triggering new oxidation reaction cycles. In this calculation, several key elements responsible for the observed oxidative ability have been established by using Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, etc., which include the reaction energy, the spin exchange effect, the spin-state conversion process, and the energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) of the reactive oxidants. The comparative oxidative abilities of the ruthenium-oxo/superoxo compounds with different axial ligands are also investigated. The results suggest that the ruthenium-oxo/superoxo species featuring a chlorine axial ligand is more reactive than that substituted with oxygen. This tuneable reactivity can be understood when considering the different electronic characters of the two ligands and the effective atomic number rule (EAN).
Simple and Efficient Ruthenium-Catalyzed Oxidation of Primary Alcohols with Molecular Oxygen.

Abstract:Oxidative transformations utilizing molecular oxygen (O2 ) as the stoichiometric oxidant are of paramount importance in organic synthesis from ecological and economical perspectives. Alcohol oxidation reactions that employ O2 are scarce in homogeneous catalysis and the efficacy of such systems has been constrained by limited substrate scope (most involve secondary alcohol oxidation) or practical factors, such as the need for an excess of base or an additive. Catalytic systems employing O2 as the "primary" oxidant, in the absence of any additive, are rare. A solution to this longstanding issue is offered by the development of an efficient ruthenium-catalyzed oxidation protocol, which enables smooth oxidation of a wide variety of primary, as well as secondary benzylic, allylic, heterocyclic, and aliphatic, alcohols with molecular oxygen as the primary oxidant and without any base or hydrogen- or electron-transfer agents. Most importantly, a high degree of selectivity during alcohol oxidation has been predicted for complex settings. Preliminary mechanistic studies including (18) O labeling established the in situ formation of an oxo-ruthenium intermediate as the active catalytic species in the cycle and involvement of a two-electron hydride transfer in the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:A main obstacle in the rational development of heterogeneous catalysts is the difficulty in identifying active sites. Here we show metal/oxide interfacial sites are highly active for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and other industrially important primary alcohols on a range of metals and oxides combinations. Scanning tunnelling microscopy together with density functional theory calculations on FeO/Pt(111) reveals that benzyl alcohol enriches preferentially at the oxygen-terminated FeO/Pt(111) interface and undergoes readily O-H and C-H dissociations with the aid of interfacial oxygen, which is also validated in the model study of Cu2O/Ag(111). We demonstrate that the interfacial effects are independent of metal or oxide sizes and the way by which the interfaces were constructed. It inspires us to inversely support nano-oxides on micro-metals to make the structure more stable against sintering while the number of active sites is not sacrificed. The catalyst lifetime, by taking the inverse design, is thereby significantly prolonged.

Abstract:Ruthenium-catalyzed sigma-bond activation-assisted meta-C-H functionalization has emerged as a useful tool to forge distal C-C bonds. However, given the limited number of mechanistic studies, a clear understanding of the origin of the site-selectivity and the complete reaction pattern is not available. Here, we present systematic computational studies on ruthenium-catalyzed C-H functionalization with primary, secondary, tertiary alkyl bromides and aryl bromides. The C-H scission and the C-C formation were carefully examined. Monocyclometalated ruthenium(II) complexes were identified as the active species, which then underwent inner-sphere single electron transfer (ISET) to activate the organic bromides. The site-selectivity results from the competition between the close-shell reductive elimination and the open-shell radical coupling. Based on this mechanistic understanding, a multilinear regression model was built to predict the site-selectivity, which was further validated by experiments.

Abstract:  In this work, a series of ruthenium complexes bearing salicylaldimine ligand were successfully synthesized and well characterized. These Ru(II) complexes were found to be efficient catalysts for selective oxidation of olefins to aldehydes in the presence of TBHP as a mild oxidant. Treatment of Ru3(CO)12 with salicylaldimine ligands [ArNCH(3‐tBuC6H3OH) [ArC6H5 (L1H); 4‐OMeC6H4 (L2H); 4‐MeC6H4 (L3H); 2,4,6‐Me3C6H2 (L4H); 4‐ClC6H4 (L5H); 4‐BrC6H4 (L6H)] in refluxing toluene afforded six bis‐ligand mononuclear ruthenium carbonyl complexes [ArNCH(3‐tBuC6H3O)]2Ru(CO)2 1a–1f in good yields. All of the Ru(II) complexes were characterized using IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of complexes 1a, 1b, 1e, and 1f were further confirmed through X‐ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, the catalytic performance of these complexes was investigated in the oxidation of olefins to aldehydes, using TBHP as the oxidant in refluxing trichloromethane. With 1.0 mol% catalyst loading, these ruthenium complexes displayed high reactivity and good functional‐group compatibility, selectivity providing the corresponding oxidation product aldehydes in 73%–94% yields.

Sub-Nanometric Ruthenium Clusters Prepared by Solid-State Dispersion for Catalytic Selective Aerobic Oxidation of Aromatic Alcohols

Abstract:The selective aerobic oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes is one of the most important challenges in the green chemical industry. In this work, Ru/Al2O3-SSD catalyst with highly dispersed metallic ruthenium clusters (average particle size of 0.97 nm) was prepared by solid-state dispersion (SSD) for efficient selective aerobic oxidation of aromatic alcohols to aldehydes. Compared with the counterpart catalyst Ru/Al2O3-IM prepared by wet impregnation (IM), this catalyst has smaller metal particles (0.97 nm vs. 3.4 nm), resulting in a special electronic structure, and exhibits much higher TOF (234 h- 1 vs. 98 h- 1) in the aerobic oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol at 80 degrees C. The catalyst also shows excellent catalytic activity in the preparation of vanillin by selective aerobic oxidation of vanillyl alcohol at 100 degrees C, delivering a vanillin yield of 99%. The solid-state dispersion strategy provides an efficient and facile way for the fabrication of high-performance sub-nanometric metal catalysts.

Abstract:The biomass-derived alcohol oxidation reaction (BDAOR) holds great promise for sustainable production of chemicals. However, selective electrooxidation of alcohols to value-added aldehyde compounds is still challenging. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic BDAORs to selectively produce aldehydes using single-atom ruthenium on nickel oxide (Ru-1-NiO) as a catalyst in the neutral medium. For electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), Ru-1-NiO exhibits a low potential of 1.283 V at 10 mA cm(-2), and an optimal 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) selectivity of 90 %. Experimental studies reveal that the neutral electrolyte plays a critical role in achieving a high aldehyde selectivity, and the single-atom Ru boosts HMF oxidation in the neutral medium by promoting water dissociation to afford OH*. Furthermore, Ru-1-NiO can be extended to selective electrooxidation of a series of biomass-derived alcohols to corresponding aldehydes, which are conventionally difficult to obtain in the alkaline medium.

Abstract:Molecular level understanding of the mechanism of oxidative coupling of alcohols on metallic Au(111) activated by oxygen is achieved through a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations. The facility of the beta-H elimination of the alkoxys, which increases with the length of the alkyl chain, is identified to be critical in determining the product distributions. Dioxymethylene serves as a formaldehyde reservoir in the cross-coupling reaction between methanol and formaldehyde through its reversible formation and decomposition, contributing to the high selectivity for the coupling products.

Abstract:Vinyl chlorides can be effectively prepared via alkyne hydrochlorination catalyzed by the [Cp*RuCl(cod)]/PPh3 system. The reaction mechanism has been elucidated by density functional theory calculations. Different from the previously proposed pathway (oxidative addition, alkyne coordination, H-/Cl-transfer via inner addition, and reductive elimination), the calculation results indicate that HCl favorably attacks the alkyne stepwise from the outer coordination sphere of the Ru center. The reaction is essentially the electrophilic addition of HCl to alkyne. Therefore, the proton tends to attack the more negatively charged carbon of the C–C triple bond, leading to the Markovnikov product.

Abstract:The alloyed PtRu/C,core-shell Ru@Pt/C and Pt/C nanocomposite catalysts in similar diameter with different Pt/Ru atomic ratios were synthesized by chemical reduction meth-od.Physical characterization and electrochemical characterization results show that the diameter of Ru@Pt/C,PtRu/C nano-metal particles is about 9~1 1 nm,and Ru@Pt/C in core-shell struc-ture.The mechanism of Ru@Pt/C electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol meets the electronic effect mechanism,the mechanism of PtRu/C is consistent with the electronic effect and the bi-functional mechanism.The clarification of the catalytic mechanism provides a solid theoretical ba-sis for the development of new catalysts.

Abstract:Recently, the Furstner group reported the first general trans-hydroboration of internal alkynes by using a cationic ruthenium(II) complex, [Cp*Ru(MeCN)(3)]PF6, as the catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out to elucidate the reaction mechanism and the origin of stereo selectivity. The reaction mechanism was suggested to initiate with the rate-determining oxidative hydrogen migration to stereo selectively form a metallacyclopropene intermediate (that determines the trans selectivity), followed by a reductive boryl migration to form the unusual trans-addition alkenyl-borane product. A combined ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS) and DFT study has also been employed to investigate the unsuccessful reaction with terminal alkynes. Key oxidative-coupling intermediates have been identified. Our results suggest that [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of terminal alkynes to form a very stable arene compound could be the reason for the unsuccessful hydroboration of the terminal alkynes. Moreover, unreactive catecholborane reagent attributes the strong coordination of its arene part with the catalyst. Our proposed nonclassical mechanism also accounted for the other related Ru(II)-catalyzed reactions (such as hydrogenation and hydrogermylation). Our combined computational and experimental study provides in-depth mechanistic understanding and insights on the unusual trans-addition catalyzed by the cationic ruthenium(II) complexes and could help design the other trans-addition reactions.

Abstract:Three novel cyclometalated ruthenium complexes ([Ru.L(9)] [Ru.L(10)] and [Ru.L(11)]) featuring azo functionalities were synthesized and characterized using a variety of spectroscopic techniques, namely FT‐IR, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and ESI‐MS. Representative solid‐state structures of the acquired complexes were determined through X‐ray crystallography. These complexes were evidenced to be efficient catalysts for the synthesis of various α−alkylated compounds utilizing simple acetophenone derivatives with easily affordable and economically viable alcohols, which were isolated and characterized via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The optimum reaction conditions were found by employing toluene as solvent, potassium tert‐butoxide as base at 115 oC temperature utilizing 0.8 mol% of catalyst [Ru.L(10)]. The yield of the desired compounds found to be in the range of 83 – 97%. Additionally, mass spectrometry provided insights into the in‐situ generated ruthenium hydride and ruthenium alkoxy intermediates, shedding light on the catalytic mechanism.
