Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) has attracted an ever-growing interest due to its unique anisotropic two-dimensional structure, impressive photoelectronic properties and attractive application potential. However, the tools for bandgap engineering and passivation via covalent modification of BP nanosheets remain limited to diazonium salt and nucleophilic addition methods, so that developing new modification strategies for BP nanosheets is crucial to explore its physical and chemical properties and enrich the toolbox for functionalization. Herein, we report the covalent modification of liquid-phase exfoliated BP nanosheets based on a rational analysis of BP structure. The modification of BP is achieved via carbene, a highly reactive organic mediate. The carbene modification improves the solubility and stability of BP nanosheets. Detailed microscopic and spectroscopic characterizations including infrared spectra, Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra, SEM and TEM were conducted to provide insights for the reaction. The proof of the existence of covalent bonds between BP nanosheets and organic moieties confirms the successful modification. Moreover, theoretical calculations were conducted to unveil the reaction mechanism of the two different types of bonds and the chemical property of two-dimensional BP.

Abstract:The first non-covalent functionalization of black phosphorus (BP) is presented. The treatment of BP with electron- withdrawing 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) leads to electron transfer from BP to the organic dopant. On the other hand, the non-covalent interaction of BP with perylene diimide is mainly due to van-der-Waals interactions but also leads to a considerable stabilization of the BP flakes against oxygen degradation.

Abstract:<p>Owing to their tunable direct bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and unique in‐plane anisotropic structure, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) have emerged as one of the most important candidates among the 2D materials beyond graphene. However, the poor ambient stability of black phosphorus limits its practical application, due to the chemical degradation of phosphorus atoms to phosphorus oxides in the presence of oxygen and/or water. Chemical functionalization is demonstrated as an efficient approach to enhance the ambient stability of BPNSs. Herein, various covalent strategies including radical addition, nitrene addition, nucleophilic substitution, and metal coordination are summarized. In addition, efficient noncovalent functionalization methods such as van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, and cation–π interactions are described in detail. Furthermore, the preparations, characterization, and diverse applications of functionalized BPNSs in various fields are recapped. The challenges faced and future directions for the chemical functionalization of BPNSs are also highlighted.</p>

Abstract:The chemical functionalization is proven to be an effective and controllable approach to modify the properties of black phosphorus (BP), and improve the air-stability of BP and its nanoelectronic applications [Nat. Chem., 2016, 8, 597]. However, covalent functionalization of BP and related properties are poorly understood. Here we present a theoretical investigation on the electronic structure and transport property of chemically modified BP. Our calculations reveal that the molecule modification generates a rather flat energy band within the bandgap, which leads to a reduced hole mobility of BP. Alternatively, we propose to use polymers bonded to BP surface, aiming at a balance between functionality and carrier mobility. The polymer-BP composites preserve both electron and hole mobility of pristine BP. Meanwhile, the stability of polymer-BP composites in ambient condition is enhanced as well.

Abstract:As an emerging two-dimensional material, black phosphorus (BP) has fascinating structure and electronic properties, affording broad applications in field-effect transistors, optoelectronic devices, energy devices, and biomedicines. However, the lone pair electrons of phosphorus atoms readily react with oxygen, so few-layer BP is easily oxidized and degraded when exposed to air. Therefore, the ambient stability of BP needs to be enhanced for its potential application. Chemical functionalization is one of the most effective methods for improving the ambient stability of few-layer BP. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the chemical functionalization of BP, focusing on covalent and noncovalent functionalization and surface coordination. The influence of the functionalization pattern on the electronic properties and ambient stability of BP is summarized. Finally, the challenges and future development of chemical functionalization of BP are discussed.

Abstract:AbstractTwo‐dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) has a unique band structure, but it suffers from low ambient stability owing to its high reactivity to oxygen. Covalent functionalization has been demonstrated to passivate the reactive BP effectively, however the reported covalent functionalization methods are quite limited to aryl diazonium and nucleophilic additions affording P−C and P−O−C single bonds, for which the retaining of one unpaired electron in the Group 15 phosphorus atom hampers the passivation effect. Now, covalent azide functionalization of BP nanosheets (BPNSs) is reported, leading to significant enhancement of the ambient stability of BP as confirmed by UV/Vis spectroscopic studies. The most stable configuration of the azide functionalized BPNSs (f‐BPNSs) is predicted by theoretical calculations, featuring the grafting of benzoic acid moiety onto BPNSs via the unprecedented P=N double bonds formed through in situ nitrene as a reactive intermediate.

Abstract:Two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a perspective material for various micro- and opto-electronic, energy, catalytic, and biomedical applications. Chemical functionalization of black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS) is an important pathway for the preparation of materials with improved ambient stability and enhanced physical properties. Currently, the covalent functionalization of BPNS with highly reactive intermediates, such as carbon-free radicals or nitrenes, has been widely implemented to modify the material’s surface. However, it should be noted that this field requires more in-depth research and new developments. Herein, we report for the first time the covalent carbene functionalization of BPNS using dichlorocarbene as a functionalizing agent. The P–C bond formation in the obtained material (BP–CCl2) has been confirmed by Raman, solid-state 31P NMR, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods. The BP–CCl2 nanosheets exhibit an enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with an overpotential of 442 mV at −1 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 120 mV dec−1, outperforming the pristine BPNS.

Abstract:Nanoconfinement of low-dimensional materials opens up a new territory for tailoring material hybridization to produce novel geometric structures for applications in electronics, catalysis, and photonics. Despite the progress made in the encapsulation of 2D materials, exploration of their definite crystal structures into lower-dimensional nanomaterials is still largely unexplored. Herein, one-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) nanowires with an aspect ratio of over 100 produced by confining BP into the CNT (conf-BP@CNT) are reported. Notably, the unique structure and dimensions of BP were determined by confinement within the CNT and were accurately characterized by crystallography. During the spatially confined growth, the defects and capillarity effect of the CNT promote nucleation and growth of BP within the CNT. conf-BP@CNT shows surface charge localization of conf-BP and protection rendered by the CNT shell, giving rise to more efficient and stable photocatalytic rhodamine B (RhB) degradation than the bare exfoliated BP nanosheets. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of nanoconfinement in producing nanomaterials with controllable dimensions, precise spatial arrangement, and unique structures.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) nanostructures enable a new strategy to tune the electronic and optical properties of this atomically thin material. In this paper we show, via density functional theory calculations, the possibility to modify the optical properties of BP quantum dots via covalent functionalization. The quantum dot selected in this study has chemical formula P24H12 and has been covalent functionalized with one or more benzene rings or anthracene. The effect of functionalization is highlighted in the absorption spectra, where a red shift of the absorption is noticeable. The shift can be ascribed to an electron delocalization in the black phosphorus/organic molecule nanostructure.
Enhancing the Surface Reactivity of Black Phosphorus on Hydrogen Evolution by Covalent Chemistry

Abstract:Covalent functionalization has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to improve the stability of monolayer black phosphorus (BP); however, the effect of chemical functionalization on the catalytic activity of BP is still unclear. In this work, we systematically studied the structures, electronic properties, and catalytic performance of chemically modified BP by phenyl groups (4-nitrophenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, and 4-aminophenyl) for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicated that phenyl functionalization leads to the formation of P-C covalent bonds that is accompanied by the elongation and breaking of intralayer P-P bonds, leaving under-coordinated P atoms on the sublayer. The binding interaction with functional groups enhances with an increase in the coverage, suggesting a self-promoting tendency for surface functionalization when introducing extra functional groups. Furthermore, the electronic structure and catalytic activity of BP can be significantly varied by the covalent modification. The newly formed P-C bonds and the unsaturated sublayer P atoms contribute to substantial midgap states around Fermi level. Different from the catalytically inert basal plane of pristine BP, the HER activity of BP is significantly improved after the covalent functionalization, where the unsaturated sublayer P becomes the active site for H adsorption. Regardless of the electron-donating or -withdrawing ability of the phenyl groups, an optimal HER activity with Delta G(H) close to 0 eV can be achieved at the 8.33% coverage, indicating the strong potential of BP as highly promising nonmetal electrocatalysts. These theoretical results shed light on the fundamental understanding of the electronic and catalytic properties of functionalized BP materials and pave the way for further improving their catalytic activities.

Abstract:As an emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus (BP) has attracted great interest in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but the performance is restricted by the low surface reactivity and poor stability. Exfoliating BP into the 2D structure is an effective method to increase the exposure of active sites. However, the intrinsic surface reactivity and stability cannot be improved, and, the widely used liquid-phase exfoliation method is time-consuming and laborious. In this work, we successfully exfoliates the bulk BP into ultrathin BP nanosheets with dense surface amino-functional groups (BP-NH2) using NH3 plasma treatment. The 2D structure can shorten the photo-excited charges migration distance and improve the exposure of surface-active sites. Furthermore, the amino-functional groups on ultrathin BP nanosheets can prevent the destruction of BP nanosheets in ambient air, favoring the charge separation, CO2 adsorption and activation during the catalytic process. Benefiting from integrated advantages of amino functional groups, the optimal BP-NH2 exhibits a photocatalytic CO2 reduction rate to CO of 27.6 μmol g−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 87.0 %, both of which are higher than those of pristine bulk BP. This work presents ideas for stabilizing BP and improving the CO2 reduction performance simultaneously.

Abstract:Owing to its high charge-carrier mobility, tunable direct-bandgap and unique in-plane anisotropic structure, black phosphorus (BP), a rising star of post-graphene two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, has been intensively investigated since early 2014. To explore its full potential and push the limits, research into BP-based novel functional nanostructures (i.e., nanomaterials and nanodevices) by means of hybridization, doping, and functionalization is rapidly expanding. Indeed, the cutting-edge developments and applications of BP nanostructures have had a significant impact on a wide range of research areas, including field effect transistors, diodes, photodetectors, biomedicine, sodium-ion batteries, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, memory devices, and more. This tutorial review summarizes the recent advances of BP nanostructures and outlines the future challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP), a phosphorus analog of graphene, is a two-dimensional material with the thickness-dependent bandgap and a high carrier mobility, which emerges as a promising material in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. In this study, BP loaded with surface hydroxyl has been prepared by liquid ultrasonic exfoliation and used as the co-catalyst, which results in 341% photocatalytic hydrogen evolution enhancement to the anatase TiO2 under the simulated sunlight irradiation and a quantum efficiency as high as 18.23% at 365 nm. The improved photocatalytic activity has been ascribed to the Z-scheme mechanism. These results indicate that 2D surface hydroxyl-loaded BP can be used as a broadband photocatalyst by forming type II heterostructures with other wide-bandgap semiconductors.

Abstract:Phosphorus, one of the most abundant elements in the Earth (approximate to 0.1%), has attracted much attention in the last five years since the rediscovery of two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (BP) in 2014. The successful scaling down of BP endows this old material' with new vitality, resulting from the intriguing semiconducting properties in the atomic scale limit, i.e. layer-dependent bandgap that covers from the visible light to mid-infrared light spectrum as well as hole-dominated ambipolar transport characteristics. Intensive research effort has been devoted to the fabrication, characterization, functionalization and application of BP and other phosphorus allotropes. In this review article, we summarize the fundamental properties and fabrication techniques of BP, with particular emphasis on the recent progress in molecular beam epitaxy growth of 2D phosphorus. Subsequently, we highlight recent progress in BP (opto)electronic device applications achieved via customized manipulation methods, such as interface, defect and bandgap engineering as well as forming Lego-like stacked heterostructures.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) was firstly and successfully synthesized in 1914. But it has given a new life after many years until the rediscovery of two-dimensional (2D) BP in 2014, which inspires the craze for studying BP once again. This review begins with the preparation of BP, which is divided into two parts: the preparation of bulk BP and 2D BP. This review highlights its catalytic potential on Oxygen Evolution Reaction no matter the morphology such as bulk BP, 2D BP and atomic doping, compared to that of the precious metals with high price. In addition, BP has excellent performance in sensors due to its special direct band gap and excellent electron mobility. BP owns specific high capacity making it stand out as a bright star as the electrode materials applied in Lithium battery. More importantly, the application restriction of BP is delicately analyzed and some suggestions are put forward. Finally, the outlook including future and development trends and application prospects lying in the road ahead of BP research are simultaneously discussed.

Abstract:0D transition metal phosphides (TMPs) nanocrystals (NCs)–2D ultrathin black phosphorus (BP) heterostructure (Ni2P@BP) have been synthesized via a facile sonication‐assisted exfoliation followed by a solvothermal process. Compared with the bare BP, the specially designed Ni2P@BP architecture can enhance the electrical conductivity (from 2.12 × 102 to 6.25 × 104 S m–1), tune the charge carrier concentration (from 1.25 × 1017 to 1.37 × 1020 cm–3), and reduce the thermal conductivity (from 44.5 to 7.69 W m–1 K–1) at 300 K, which can be considered for multiple applications. As a result, the Ni2P@BP exhibits excellent Li storage properties and high hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalytic activities. The Ni2P@BP shows improved Li diffusion kinetics (e.g., the Li ions diffusion coefficient increases from 1.14 × 10–14 cm2 s–1 for pure BP nanosheets to 8.02 × 10–13 cm2 s–1 for Ni2P@BP). In addition, the Ni2P@BP electrode sustains hydrogen production with almost unchanged activity over 3000 cycles, which indicates its good chemical stability when operating under strong reducing environment.
