Abstract:A large eddy simulation (LES) investigation of the inclined jet in crossflow is presented in this paper. The angle between the hole and the main flow is 35 degrees, which represents a typical film cooling application. Two different geometries, namely the cylindrical hole and the fan-shaped hole, are investigated at a blowing ratio of 0.5, which is a representative value for film cooling. The numerical tool is first validated and then used to study the flow and the film cooling effectiveness of the cooling holes. Both the time averaged and the instantaneous flow characteristics are analyzed. In the time averaged results, the counter-rotating vortex pair has large effects on the mixing of the coolant with the main flow. The instantaneous results show that the mixing of the injected flow with the main flow is highly related to the unsteady coherent vortices. The difference in the cooling effectiveness distribution for the two holes is due to the different coherent vortices. The relationship between the coherent vortices and the temperature distribution is explained in detail. These results show that the vortices distribution at the exit of the hole has important influence on the later development of the hairpin vortices, thus affecting the temperature distribution and the cooling effectiveness.

Abstract:The combination of a micmchannel and a circular synthetic jet has been proven as a promising cooling technology for microelectronic devices. However, the flow control and heat transfer characteristics of a circular synthetic jet in a microchannel are still not clear. This work numerically investigates the interaction between a circular synthetic jet and a cross flow in a microchannel using an in-house solver based on the finite volume method and analyzes its impact on the heat transfer process to further understand the heat transfer enhancement induced by a circular synthetic jet in a microchannel. The effects of the synthetic jet Reynolds number (Re-sj = 0 to 324), dimensionless stroke length (L/H = 1.8432 to 92.16), and cross-flow Reynolds number (Re-c = 188 to 470) are studied herein. The results show that the main body of the vortex structure generated by the circular impinging synthetic jet during the discharge stage is a hairpin vortex. During the downstream motion of the hairpin vortex, the vortex legs gradually stretch and evolve into a pair of large-scale longitudinal vortex. The heat transfer enhancement induced by a circular synthetic jet can be divided into two parts according to the difference in acting mechanism: an impinging region with severe heat transfer fluctuation and an entraining region with a relatively stable heat transfer performance. The parametric study demonstrates that the enhancements of the time-area-averaged Nusselt number and the total pressure drop are mainly affected by Re-sj, while the transient heat transfer performance is determined by L/H. Furthermore, the growth rates of the time-area-averaged Nusselt number and the total pressure drop are almost independent of Re-c.

Abstract:Jet in crossflow (JICF) is a sophisticated phenomenon that commonly exists in many industrial applications such as gas turbine combustors and film cooling. Interaction and mixing between the jet and the crossflow are especially concerned in corresponding designs and hence need to be investigated and understood to improve the design efficiency. In this paper, simultaneous PIV (particle-image-velocimetry) and PLIF (planar laser-induced fluorescence) measurements were conducted in a water tunnel to study the velocity and concentration fields of an inclined JICF. Three jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios were studied and compared (R_ _= 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2). Turbulent normal stresses _, _ _and turbulent shear stress _ _were presented and discussed. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was used to analyze the simultaneous velocity and concentration fields and revealed a certain degree of similarity between the concentration and the wall-normal component of velocity. Turbulent scalar fluxes _ _and _ _were obtained and their features in the windward shear layer were discussed and interpreted. This paper provides experimental data of simultaneous velocity and concentration fields in an inclined JICF and helps to deeper understand the interaction and mixing process, thus might be instructive in relevant applications.
LARGE-EDDY SIMULATION OF SHAPED HOLE FILM COOLING WITH THE INFLUENCE OF CROSS FLOW

Abstract:In the modern highly-loaded gas turbine, due to the large pressure difference between the suction side and the pressure side of the turbine blade, strong cross flow is formed and it strongly affects the aerodynamic and cooling performances in the end-wall region. The film cooling behavior in the environment of strong cross flow is different from the straight channel environment widely studied in the literature. In this research, the effect of cross flow on film cooling is investigated by Large Eddy Simulation (LES) using subgrid-scale (SGS) model. Numerical simulation is carried out in a curved passage to simulate the turbine blade passage. Shaped cooling hole with blowing ratio 1 is studied. The time-averaged friction line results are compared with existing experimental ink trace results. The vortex structures, both time-averaged and instantaneous, are analyzed to study the effect of cross flow on film cooling. At the exit of the cooling hole, the hanging vortices with negativey-vorticity are more flat in shape and closer to the wall in position in contrast to hanging vortex with positive y-vorticity, which is caused by cross flow and results in the asymmetry of hairpin vortices downstream as well as the asymmetry of the distribution of coolant. It has been shown that the vortices from mainstream have a significant impact on the field near the exit of the cooling hole. Those vortices interact with the hairpin vortices from the cooling hole and directly lead to the asymmetry of the hairpin vortices. Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis is further conducted to extract the dominant flow structures and the physical mechanisms of primary POD modes are given to explain the distribution of film cooling effectiveness affected by cross flow. Based on the specific situation in this work, a fast incremental POD (iPOD) approach is adopted since the rank of the field matrix is far less than the rows, which is caused by the tall and thin character of the matrix, which makes the analysis less costly and more effective. This research helps to understand the cooling performance in the real turbine blade passage and to explain the coolant mixing process based on the instantaneous flow field obtained using high precision LES simulation and powerful iPOD.

Abstract:Laminar air coolant injected into a fully turbulent preliminary stream is analyzed using Large Eddy Simulation. Three freestream Mach numbers, 0.8, 1.2 and 1.4, are investigated. Regions of typical shock-flow interaction in supersonic film cooling are distinguished into 3 types, including shock generation, shock reflection and shock absorption. Numerical results show that the separation/bow shock promote the secondary flow to adhere to the protected wall and widen its transverse coverage. The mechanism of near field crossflow is different from that of far field, which requires disparate forms of corresponding empirical correlations.

Abstract:Large eddy simulation is performed to study the thermal energy transport and mixing process of a round laminar jet in a fully-turbulent high-Mach-number crossflow. In this study, the energy equation of highly compressible fluid is systematically analyzed and the contributions of each term in the equation are compared quantitatively. Turbulent enthalpy transport is found to be in the same order of magnitude as the advection term associated with mean motion and thus is not negligible when considering the convective heat transfer problem of film cooling, which differs from the conclusion drawn from the incompressible-jets-in-crossflow studies. The inaccuracy of RANS turbulent modeling caused by counter-gradient transport of enthalpy is explained in detail and a more reasonable three-dimensional analysis method is proposed for in-depth mechanism analysis and turbulent model improvement. The numerical results also show that the contribution of mean motion to the overall kinetic energy dissipation in thermal energy transport is dominant in the near-field region where jets and crossflow interact and mix intensively while the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation term predominates in most other regions. Moreover, the irreversible increase in entropy caused by dissipation and heat transfer in the flow field is compared. The results show that the entropy production due to the latter one cannot be ignored when dealing with large temperature difference film cooling which is common in high-pressure turbines.

Abstract:A three-dimensional compressible large eddy simulation (LES) method was performed to explore the flow and heat transfer characteristics in the hole and mixing zone of a crossflow film cooling model. A traditional cylindrical hole and diffusion slot hole were selected as the cases for the film hole. The characteristics of the crossflow film flow-field and the influence of the internal crossflow on the film cooling of the diffusion slot hole were explained by the vortex flow in the hole and the instantaneous/time-averaged jet mixing. The results showed that helical motion is easily induced in the holes under the influence of crossflow. Asymmetric outlet flow behavior is the main reason for the asymmetric characteristics downstream of the hole. The difference in the blowing ratio results in the difference in the strength of the spiral vortex and the central vortex tube inside the hole. For the diffusion slot hole, the high-speed zone caused by the crossflow effect at the hole-inlet gradually evolves into strip shapes under the combined action of axial extrusion and spanwise diffusion. With the disappearance of the helical structure, the high-speed areas gradually converge on both sides of the hole exit in the span direction, and the streamline at the exit develops relatively smoothly. The inlet crossflow and the crossflow Reynolds number have little effect on the film cooling effectiveness of the diffusion slot hole. With an increase in the blowing ratio, the lateral diffusion capacity of the film is gradually enhanced. Furthermore, compared with the cylindrical hole, the instantaneous film fluctuation region of the diffusion slot hole case is smaller in range and more symmetrical in distribution. These findings advance the understanding of the film cooling of diffusion slot holes.

Abstract:Large eddy simulation is performed to study the thermal energy transport and mixing process of compressible film cooling in the fully-turbulent high-Mach-number crossflow. Three Mach numbers 0.8, 1.2, and 1.4, based on the bulk crossflow velocity, are adopted. And the influence of both the compressibility and shock waves on the transverse jet from cylindrical orifices is discussed in detail. The results reveal that the effects of compressibility should be distinguished from shocks in supersonic flows. The compressibility effect strengthens the jet penetration and lateral spreading by increasing the energy contained in the large-scale coherent structures. The mixing of the jet is enhanced by the strong compressibility in the near field whether shocks exist or not. When the crossflow transits from the subsonic to the supersonic state, the effect of shock waves becomes more significant than that of the compressibility. Various interactions between shocks, coherent structures, and thermal energy transport are analyzed in this study. The results show that the appearance of the separation shock and bow shock reduces the jet penetration and strengthens its interaction with the bottom wall. The generation of this type of shock system suppresses the flow separation on the leeward side of the jet, which results in a higher cooling effectiveness in the jet near field. The incident oblique shock wave also induces lifting of the jet trajectory in the far-field region as a result of the intensified separation trend. In the highly compressible film cooling process with great temperature difference, the advection transport associated with turbulent motion, rather than the one associated with mean motion, turns out to dominate the thermal energy transfer in general. Moreover, the counter gradient behavior of this thermal energy transport in compressible turbulence is also shown.

Abstract:The effect of coolant crossflow on the film-cooling effectiveness was studied using the large-eddy simulation turbulent flow model. A crossflow-coolant configuration and a plenum-coolant configuration were investigated for blowing ratios (M) of 0.5 and 1.0. The results show that the coolant crossflow strongly affects the film cooling. The crossflow has a positive effect on the laterally averaged film-cooling effectiveness, especially for M equal to 1.0. Film cooling with crossflow generally has a higher effectiveness, due to the delayed cooling-jet detachment as well as the improved lateral coolant spreading and coverage. Therefore, crossflow at the entry to the film-cooling hole should be taken into account when modeling film cooling of turbine blades. The results also indicate that the larger blowing ratio leads to poorer adhesion of the jet stream and a lower fihn-cooling effectiveness for the plenum-coolant model, while for the crossflow-coolant model, the film-cooling performance remains high for the larger blowing ratio.
Large-eddy Simulation of Shaped Hole Film Cooling with the Influence of Streamwise Pressure Gradient

Abstract:The complicated streamwise pressure gradient (SPG) environments in gas turbines affect the film cooling performance. In this research, shaped cooling hole with density ratio 1.5, blowing ratio 1.6, and acceleration coefficient, K=1e-6 is studied using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). LES results have been verified by experiment results. The differences between the Reynolds Average Navier – Stokes (RANS) results of zero pressure gradient (ZPG) and favorable pressure gradient (FPG) showed that the FPG keeps the jet closer to the wall surface, and the counter rotating vortex pair (CRVP) is compressed. The time-average and instantaneous flow field obtained from LES were analyzed to get the flow field details. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Lumley triangle were used to analyze the vortices and the turbulence characteristics of the strong shear zone near the hole exit and downstream. The influences of FPG on horseshoe vortex, hairpin vortex and shear layer vortex were analyzed. The results showed that the hairpin vortex enhanced by FPG effect the film cooling performance of the downstream.

Abstract:The internal heat transfer performance and flow structures of a sweeping jet and film composite cooling on a flat plate were numerically studied. Sweeping jet and film composite cooling consists of a fluidic oscillator and 20 cylindrical film holes; the direct jet is formed by removing the feedback from the fluidic oscillator, which is different from the traditional cylindrical nozzle. Four different mass flow rates of coolant were considered, and the inclination angle of the film hole was 30°. The Conjugate Heat Transfer method (CHT) and Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation (URANS) were employed. The results indicated that the flow resistance coefficients of the sweeping jet were larger than those of the direct jet, and the Nusselt number monotonously increased with the increase in the mass flow rate. Compared to the direct jet, the sweeping jet had a more spatially uniform heat removal rate, and the area-averaged Nusselt number was slightly lower. Therefore, the sweeping jet and film composite cooling caused the distribution of the flat plate heat transfer to be more uniform. It is worth noting that the novel direct jet nozzle in the present work had considerable area-averaged impingement cooling effectiveness.

Abstract:In modern aero-engine and gas turbine, the highly loaded turbine leads to strong secondary flow by which the main flow and the film cooling jets are driven from the pressure side to the suction side. As a result, the cross flow has considerable influences on the performance of film cooling jets in the endwall region. In this work, the effects of cross flow on the shaped-hole film cooling performance are investigated both experimentally and numerically. Experimental studies are conducted in a curved channel which simulates the real turbine blade environment with the blowing ratio from 0.5 to 2.5. Numerical studies are also conducted to obtain detailed information about vortical structures. Results show that the cross flow changes the relative position of the two pairs of kidney vortices generated at the outlet of the shaped hole. The negative kidney vortices are stuck to the endwall due to the lift force and they decay faster downstream. The coolant is driven by the cross flow to migrate along the radial pressure gradient direction. And the coolant near the endwall migrates further. The peak value of the cooling effectiveness is suppressed; however, the laterally averaged cooling effectiveness is increased, especially at high blowing ratio. An analytical model describing the flow topology about coolant jets with cross flow is proposed and results from this work may help to understand the film cooling behaviour affected by real complicated flow structures in the engine environment. Large eddy simulation of internal coolant crossflow orientation effects on film-cooling effectiveness of fan-shaped holes

Abstract:In modern gas turbine engines, the coolant is typically injected through the small cooling holes on the surface of the blade using an internal crossflow. Most experimental and numerical studies have used a stagnant plenum to feed the cooling holes without considering the influence of the internal coolant crossflow orientation. Therefore, in this study, we used large eddy simulations (LES) to investigate the effect of internal coolant crossflow orientations on film-cooling effectiveness and turbulent flow structures of fan-shaped cooling holes. A 7-7-7 laidback fan-shaped hole with an injection angle of 30-degree located on a flat plate surface was selected as a reference case. Three different internal coolant crossflow orientations (parallel/perpendicular with respect to the mainstream flow) were numerically conducted at a density ratio (DR) of 1.5 and two different blowing ratios (M = 1.5 and 3.0). The computational data were validated by the measurements of the reference case with a stagnant plenum in terms of flow and thermal fields. At both blowing ratios, the coolant channel parallel to the mainstream flow direction showed the best cooling performance among the cases. The coolant channel perpendicular to the mainstream flow displayed the minimum area-averaged film-cooling effectiveness, with a reduction of about 17% compared to the stagnant plenum. The velocity-field analysis showed an asymmetric pattern inside the cooling hole for the perpendicular coolant channel case due to the cooling hole entrance effect, which affects the distributions of film-cooling effectiveness on the flat plate. Furthermore, the time-space assessment of the velocity-field revealed greater flow unsteadiness and a wavy pattern for the crossflow perpendicular to the direction of coolant injection.

Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Extended Jet Effects on Multiple-Jet Impingement Heat Transfer Characteristics

Abstract:Abstract A jet impingement system equipped with extended jet holes was experimentally evaluated in this study. To reproduce a strong crossflow condition, the jet impingement configuration featured a multiple-jet array of 16×5 rows in the streamwise and pitchwise directions, respectively, and the crossflow was exhausted from one open side of the impingement channel only. The transient thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) technique was used to measure heat transfer on the target surface for different extended lengths of 1.0-2.5 jet hole diameters with Reynolds numbers from 1.0×104 to 3.0×104. To provide complementary flow physics for elaborating the heat transfer patterns observed from the experiments, well-validated numerical simulations were carried out. Comparisons with a baseline jet hole configuration showed that the extended jet holes helped to significantly improve the heat transfer levels as well as to generate a more uniform distribution pattern by suppressing the crossflow. Despite an aerodynamic penalty, the extended jet holes provided much higher heat transfer levels at equal pumping power consumption. The flow fields obtained by the numerical simulations revealed that the jets issued from the extended jet holes were straighter and had less mixing with the crossflow, resulting in a higher jet momentum impinging onto the target. Most importantly, it was found that the dominated flow mechanism of the extended jet holes was to prevent the jets from being redirected by the crossflow in strong crossflow conditions, rather than reducing the jet-to-target distance.

Abstract:Film cooling characteristics were numerically analyzed on the circular leading edge with two rows of staggered holes based on a 3D N-S equation solver.An FNM(full non-match) form multi-block structural mesh was used for the computational domain.The flowfield mechanisms resulting from the interactions between the cooling jets and the freestream were examined and the effect of different blowing ratios on the adiabatic effectiveness was expounded.The results show that the film cooling effectiveness is improved with the increase of blowing ratio.Finally,the cooling effectiveness is improved with the optimization of the geometric parameters of the second row of holes.

Abstract:In modern gas turbines, film cooling confronts complex near-wall flow conditions. Because of the low velocity ratio and the inclined injection in film cooling, the jet is more attached to the wall, making the influence of the local boundary layer critical. This paper investigates the interaction between the inclined jet and the mainstream boundary layer using large eddy simulation (LES). Four inflow boundary layer conditions were investigated, including a thin laminar case (δ/D = 0.5) and three turbulent cases with different thicknesses (δ/D = 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0). The jet velocity ratios are 0.23, 0.46, and 0.91 for each inflow condition. To consistently extract vortices of varying intensities, a local threshold was proposed using λci criterion. Based on the extracted vortices, a comprehensive analysis of the vortical strength, size, and position for horseshoe vortex (HSV), counter-rotating vortex pair (CRVP), and shear layer vortices (SLV) is performed under different inflow conditions. The results provide a clear picture of how HSV and CRVP form and evolve. Quantitative patterns are disclosed for the vortex lifting and vortical decay. Moreover, the thermal transport effects of HSV, CRVP, and SLV are examined. It was proven that these vortices dominate the coolant coverage, coolant core lifting, and thermal diffusion, respectively. Meanwhile, the jet has a significant impact on the near-wall flow development. The length of transition and the magnitude of thickening were discovered to be correlated with the jet velocity ratio and inflow thickness. Overall, these findings present a fresh perspective in understanding the flow and heat transport processes for inclined jet-in-crossflow.

Numerical Simulations of the Near-Field Region of Film Cooling Jets Under High Free Stream Turbulence: Application of RANS and Hybrid URANS/Large Eddy Simulation Models

Abstract:This paper investigates the flow field and thermal characteristics in the near-field region of film cooling jets through numerical simulations using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and hybrid unsteady RANS (URANS)/large eddy simulation (LES) models. Detailed simulations of flow and thermal fields of a single-row of film cooling cylindrical holes with 30 deg inline injection on a flat plate are obtained for low (M = 0.5) and high (M = 1.5) blowing ratios under high free stream turbulence (FST) (10%). The realizable k‐ε model is used within the RANS framework and a realizable k‐ε-based detached eddy simulation (DES) is used as a hybrid URANS/LES model. Both models are used together with the two-layer zonal model for near-wall simulations. Steady and time-averaged unsteady film cooling effectiveness obtained using these models are compared with available experimental data. It is shown that hybrid URANS/LES models (DES in the present paper) predict more mixing both in the wall-normal and spanwise directions compared to RANS models, while unsteady asymmetric vortical structures of the flow can also be captured. The turbulent heat flux components predicted by the DES model are higher than those obtained by the RANS simulations, resulting in enhanced turbulent heat transfer between the jet and mainstream, and consequently better predictions of the effectiveness. Nevertheless, there still exist some discrepancies between numerical results and experimental data. Furthermore, the unsteady physics of jet and crossflow interactions and the jet lift-off under high FST is studied using the present DES results.

Abstract:The heat transfer and flow structure characteristics of a film-cooled leading edge model with sweeping and normal jets were numerically investigated using the conjugate heat transfer method. The leading edge model is a simplified obtuse body model that has three rows of traditional cylindrical film holes, each with three holes inclined at 25° with respect to the surface and three angles oriented at 0° and ± 30° with respect to the axial direction. A normal jet has one row of cylindrical impingement nozzles, and a sweeping jet has only one fluidic oscillator. Three blowing ratios (M = 1.05, 2.07, and 4.11) and three temperature ratios (TR = 0.5, 0.625, and 0.75) are considered in the study. The shear stress transport k–ω turbulence model and an extremely fine structured grid were validated and applied to all simulations. The results indicate that the total pressure loss coefficient and heat transfer performance increase internally and externally, respectively, with the blowing ratio. However, they are insensitive to the temperature ratio in all cooling configurations. The sweeping jet and film (SJF) composite cooling exhibits 1.6162, 2.1195, and 2.1766 times the total pressure loss coefficient of the normal jet and film composite cooling when the blowing ratio increases from 1.05 to 4.11. However, the SJF offers the advantages of uniform Nusselt number distribution on the impinging surface and high overall cooling effectiveness on the external surface.
