Abstract:A rapid, simple, and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of persulfate in this study, based on the oxidation decolorization of methyl orange (MO) with sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals generated by the conjunction of persulfate with ferrous ions. The depletion of MO at its maximum absorption wavelength (507nm) is in proportion to the concentration of persulfate in water. There was a good linear relationship (above 99%) between the depletion of MO and the concentration of persulfate in the ranges of 0.5-100mol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.17mol L-1 under the optimized conditions. The proposed MO method for the determination of persulfate in water was effective to tolerate the interferences of common coexisting foreign species in aqueous solutions. The results were as satisfactory as that obtained by the classical iodometric method used in practical water samples. Additionally, the proposed MO method is rather inexpensive to measure the concentration of persulfate by using standard laboratory instruments (spectrophotometer).

Abstract:A method was developed that used hydroxylamine hydrochloride as a probe in a superoxide anion radical-generating visible light system for determining superoxide anion radicals. An Azure I solution with hydroxylamine hydrochloride was illuminated, after which a ferric iron solution was added to the sample solution and the remaining hydroxylamine hydrochloride in solution reduced from ferric to ferrous ions. Then, 1,10-phenanthroline solution was added and spectrophotometrically measured at 510 nm, which indirectly indicated the hydroxylamine hydrochloride content. The yields of superoxide anion radicals were indirectly expressed by the hydroxylamine hydrochloride decrement. Under optimal experimental conditions, the linear range was 0.0–1.5 × 10−5 M and the limit of detection and limit of quantification were obtained to be 8.37 × 10−7 and 2.54 × 10−6 M with an R2 of 0.9993. The method was simple and feasible and could be used for the stable measurement of superoxide anion radicals produced by photosensitizers that produce color under acidic conditions in visible light systems.

Abstract:A rapid and simple method for determination of persulfate in aqueous solution was developed. The method is based on the rapid reaction of persulfate with Methylene Blue(MB) via domestic microwave activation, which can promote the activation of persulfate and decolorize MB quickly. The depletion of MB at 644 nm(the maximum absorption wavelength of MB) is in proportion to the increasing concentration of persulfate in aqueous solution. Linear calibration curve was obtained in the range 0–1.5 mmol/L, with a limit of detection of 0.0028 mmol/L. The reaction time is rapid(within 60 sec), which is much shorter than that used for conventional methods. Compared with existing analytical methods, it need not any additives, especially colorful Fe2+, and need not any pretreatment for samples, such as p H adjustment.

Abstract:Sulfate radical is contained in calcium slag,which is an important index influencing the quality of precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) and it will increase the load to the impurity removing process during manufacturing PCC.Barium chromate spectrophotometry was adopted to determine sulfate radicals in calcium slag of phosphogypsum and a simple and rapid determination method with good selectivity has been established.At wavelenth of 410 nm,when the mass concentration of sulfate radicals is at 0.00～6.00 mg/mL and it has a linear relation with chromate radicals.Linear recession equation and the correlation coefficient are y=0.168 4x+0.003 2 and r=0.999 9 respectively.Relative standard deviation is less than 10%,and the standard sample recovery rates are at 96%～102%.This method is applied to the determination of sulfate radicals in calcium slag and has advantages of simplicity and strong feasibility,which can satisfy the determination requirements and can be used for real time monitor.
Rapid Determination of Lipid Peroxidation Using a Novel Pyridoxamine-Participating Ferrous Oxidation-Sulfosalicylic Acid Spectrophotometric Method.

Abstract:A novel method is developed to rapidly analyze lipid peroxidation in edible oils and fatty foods at room temperature, which is called the pyridoxamine-participating ferrous oxidation-sulfosalicylic acid (PFOS) method. The PFOS method evaluates the lipid peroxide value colorimetrically via detecting the pyridoxamine-mediated pigment produced by 5-sulfosalicylic acid and Fe(3+) at 500nm, while the latter is converted from Fe(2+) in the presence of lipid peroxides. The optimized formulation was ethanol (70%, v/v), Fe(2+) (4mmol/L), 5-sulfosalicylic acid (40mmol/L) and pyridoxamine (18mmol/L). The limit of quantitation is 0.087mmol Fe(3+)/L with acceptable reproducibility. In addition, current method has a significant linear correlation with both conventional thiobarbituric acid (R(2)=0.9999) and ferric thiocyanate assays (R(2)=0.9675). This method offers a rapid technique for evaluating lipid peroxidation without heating and sophisticated instrumental procedures. Besides, current method provides a new option to evaluate the lipid peroxidation state and improve the reproducibility of ferrous-oxidation.

Abstract:Recently, peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have exhibited broad application prospects in the environment field. Accordingly, a simple, rapid, and ultrasensitive method is highly desired for the specific recognition and accurate quantification of PMS in various aqueous solutions. In this work, SO4 center dot--induced aromatic hydroxylation was explored, and based on that, for the first time, a novel fluorescence method was developed for the PMS determination using Co2+ as a PMS activator and benzoic acid (BA) as a chemical probe. Through a suite of spectral, chromatographic, and mass spectrometric analyses, SO4 center dot- was proven to be the dominant radical species, and salicylic acid was identified as the fluorescent molecule. As a result, a whole radical chain reaction mechanism for the generation of salicylic acid in the BA/PMS/Co2+ system was proposed. This fluorescence method possessed a rapid reaction equilibrium (<1 min), an ultrahigh sensitivity (detection limit = 10 nM; quantification limit = 33 nM), an excellent specificity, and a wide detection range (0-100 mu M). Moreover, it performed well in the presence of possible interfering substances, including two other peroxides (i.e., peroxydisulfate and hydrogen peroxide), some common ions, and organics. The detection results for real water samples further validated the practical utility of the developed fluorescence method. This work provides a new method for the specific recognition and sensitive determination of PMS in complex aqueous solutions.

Abstract:In this study, the activation of persulfate induced by Fe(III)-ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid (EDDS) under dark and irradiation conditions and the reactivity of the generated sulfate radical (SO4•–) under a wide range of experimental conditions were investigated by means of experimental kinetic analyses and modeling. The Fe(III)-EDDS induced activation of persulfate was found to be efficient across a wide range of pH value (3–7), whereas the second order rate constant of SO4•– with 4-tert-butylphenol (4tBP) kSO4•–,4tBP = (4.21 ± 0.22) × 109 M–1 s–1 was found to be unchanged between pH 2.5 and 8.5. Experimental and theoretical investigations showed clearly that the 4tBP degradation was enhanced in the presence of chloride (10 mM), whereas an almost complete inhibition was observed in the presence of carbonates (10 mM). Determination of Sulfate Radical in Boric Acid by Photoelectric Turbidimetry

Abstract:In the acid medium,through using the stability of the BaSO4 colloid suspension,a turbidimetric method was established for the determination of trace sulfate radical in boric acid.The stabilizer was glycerol-ethanol mixed reagent (1∶4,V/V),and the precipitant was BaCl2 acidic solution.With oscillating manually and heating,the order of adding reagents didn't have effect to the results.The effects of type and dose of stabilizer,dose of BaCl2 solution,preheating temperature and measurement time on the determination were discussed,and the optimum measurement conditions were found.In this method the detection limit was 0.01 mg/L for sulfate radical,the relative standard deviation was less than 0.03%,and the recovery was 95%-110.3%.When the concentration of the sulfate radical was in range of 0.33-0.83 mg/L,it had a linear relationship with the turbidity.And the measuring time could be hold over 40 min.The method has been applied to the determination of sulfate radical in boric acd and the results were consistent with those obtained by spectrophotometry.

Abstract:Peroxynitrite-advanced oxidation technology generates strong oxidising and reactive radicals and is considered one of the most effective and attractive methods for degrading toxic organic pollutants, but studies have found that peroxynitrite utilisation during wastewater treatment is low, so it is essential to choose a simple and fast method for measuring the persulphate concentration during and after degradation of organic pollutants in a treatment system to improve their utilisation. This study investigated the spectrophotometric quantification of persulphate (S2O82-) based on the classical iodometric titration method. Instead of a back-titration step, the absorbance of yellow iodide colour was measured at 400 nm (A(400)) in the presence of a bicarbonate buffer. The resulting A(400) calibration graph was linear in the S2O82- concentration range of 0.0-0.1 mM. With dilution, the method could be used for all concentrations typical of field applications. It has been shown that there was no significant error in the measurement results when the solution was close to neutral pH. Measurement of A(400) effectively avoided the influence of other interfering ions, such as Cu2+, SO42-, Cl- and CO32-. In addition, the method exhibited little dependence on other matrix components and A(400) stable (<2% change) for more than one week. Overall, this method was fast and simple and offered a new option for measuring persulphate during the treatment of organic pollutants.
A novel spectrophotometric assay for superoxide radical anion quantification

Abstract:Nitro Blue Tetrazolium (NBT) is a widely used chemical for the determination of superoxide anion radicals (O-2(-)) and superoxide dismutase activity in many fundamental processes. Its reduction reaction with superoxide was explored in this paper as well as the spectrometric characteristics of its reduction products such as monoformazan and diformazan. The molar extinction coefficients of these products in DMSO have been calculated as 120,000 and 235,000 M(-1)cm(-1), respectively We propose that this method can be used to determine superoxide anion radical concentration or as a general screening protocol for the efficacy of an antioxidant.

Abstract:Dyes can be decolorized by the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the presence of cobalt, and four good linear correlations between the depletion of dyes at their maximum absorption wavelengths and the concentration of PMS are demonstrated under the optimum conditions. For four types of samples, sensitive, rapid, and low-cost spectrophotometric methods are developed for the determination of PMS in aqueous solutions, which are based on the oxidative decolorization of the dyes with sulfate radicals generated by the conjunction of PMS and cobalt. The linear ranges and the detection limits are determined to be 0-80 mu M and 0.08 mu M for acid orange 7, 0-100 mu M and 0.1 mu M for methylene blue, 0-80 mu M and 0.08 mu M for methyl violet, and 0-40 mu M and 0.04 mu M for rhodamine B, respectively. When our proposed methods are used for the determination of the concentration of PMS with the treatment of 4-chlorophenol by the activation of PMS with cobalt, the results are as satisfactory as those obtained by using the classical iodometric method.

Abstract:Generally speaking, measurement of hydroxylated radical products of salicylic acid requires a fussy separation process. In this study, we describe a simple method to electrochemically detect hydroxyl radicals (OH) using 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) as the OH trap. The OH is generated by the Fenton reaction from iron (II) sulfate and hydrogen peroxide in a phosphate buffer solution. Experimental results show that our method can detect the OH with high sensitivity without any separation process. The differential pulse voltammetric responses show a linear dependence on the concentration of OH in a range of 2.0×10−6 and 1.0×10−3M with a determination limit down to 5.0×10−7M. As a demonstration, the kinetics of the Fenton reaction was mapped by measuring the reaction product of hydroxyl radical trapped by 4-HBA. The result is in good agreement with that reported previously. All the results show that the present approach could provide a simple, inexpensive and promising method for biomedicine and iatrology.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel and sensitive method based on Rayleigh light scattering technique (RLS) was proposed for the determination of sulfate using a conventional spectrofluorometer. Sulfate was transformed to BaSO4 particles, which displayed intense light scattering in aqueous solutions. The effects of factors such as wavelength, acidity, stabilizers and interferents were studied in detail. The RLS intensity of the BaSO4 suspension was obtained in 0.1 mol L-1 of [H+] and the addition of 2 mL of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) with 7.05 x 10(-3) mmol mL(-1) charged cations and 1.0 mL of BaCl2.2H(2)O (5.0%) at 510 nm. In the range of 8-400 mug mL(-1), RLS intensity was linear to the concentration of BaSO4, and the detection limit was 0.3 mug mL(-1). To determine the feasibility of the proposed method, some samples of water, drinks, and vegetables digests were analyzed, and the results were in agreement with the standard turbidimetric method. Good recovery results were also obtained in the range of 94-105%. Although this method was limited in stability, it was characterized with simplicity, sensitivity, reliability, and little interference.

Abstract:In this study, a rapid, sensitive and reliable spectrophotometric method for peroxydisulfate (PDS) determination in water was established. The proposed spectrophotometric method was based on the oxidation of 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) to form stable and green-colored ABTS radical (ABTS • + ) by ferrous ion (Fe(II))-catalyzed PDS. The formed ABTS • + performed well linear relationship with PDS concentration (R 2 > 0.999) in the range of 0–60 μM at four wavelengths of 415, 650, 732, and 820 nm under optimized conditions. The proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method was highly sensitive with the absorptivity of 3.595 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 , 1.530 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 , 1.945 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 and 1.768 × 10 4 M −1 cm −1 at four detection peaks of 415, 650, 732 and 820 nm, respectively. Additionally, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method possessed well anti-interference capacity to common natural water constituents and was reliable to determine PDS concentration in water. What's more, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method was successfully applied in monitoring the change of PDS concentration during the degradation of diclofenac in heat-activated PDS process. In a word, the proposed Fe(II)-ABTS spectrophotometric method could be employed as a promising approach for the rapid and accurate measurement of PDS in water, and this study provided a new perspective for the measurement of PDS by the visible spectrophotometry.

Abstract:Highly stable superoxide anion radical(O-2·) solution prepared by dissolving KO2 in dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) and 18-crown-6 ether could react with nitroblue tetrazolium to form a blue compound with a maximum absorbance wavelength at 680 nm.Spectrophotometric results showed that the optimum time and temperature for the reaction of O-2· and NBT was 5 min and 20 ℃,respectively,and that the relationship between monoformazan absorbance and O-2· concentration was linear with a correlation coefficient of 0.999 8.The standard deviation was 1.4%.It was found that ascorbic acid could eliminate O-2· effectively,thus the proposed method can also be used for the screening of antioxidants in the laboratory.

Abstract:An indirect spectrophotometric method for determination of SO2-4 radical in polysaccharose sulfate was proposed.A definite amount of the hydrolyzed sample solution was taken and the sulfate radical was precipitated as BaSO4 by adding an excess of known amount of standard barium chloride solution.After staying for 5 min,a definite and excess amount of standard potassium chromate solution was added to the reaction mixture to precipitate the excess amount of Ba2+ as BaCrO4.The precipitate was separated by centrifuging,and an aliquot of the supernatant solution was taken to react with o-toluidine in an acetate buffer solution of pH 3.4,giving a colored product,the absorbancy of which was measured at 624 nm.Beer′s law was obeyed in the range of 50-250 μg for SO2-4.Precision and recovery of the method were tested giving results of RSD′s(n=6) to be 1.55%,and value of average recovery to be 99.25%.
Simple methods for rapid determination of sulfite in food products

Abstract:Two simple methods for sulfite determination in food products were proposed. The modified para-rosaniline (PRA)-formaldehyde method showed a much broader linear range (0.05–5.0mgl−1 as SO2) than the commonly used procedure for the sulfur dioxide detection in the atmosphere (0.05–1.0mgl−1 as SO2). By using a standard reference color card, this method only needed 5min to complete a test. The 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) method was another good alternative for rapid determination of sulfite since it only needed one main reagent and the method was robust and easy to operate with the linear range of 0.10–4.3mgl−1 as SO2. When applying to real food samples, the DTNB method had good recoveries for all the tested samples and the results agreed well with those obtained by the official iodometric titration. The modified PRA-formaldehyde method worked well with all the tested dried food products, though matrix effect of sulfite binding was observed for the beer samples. Thus, the modified PRA-formaldehyde method has advantages of sensitivity and rapidity, but the DTNB method offers a wider range of applications. Both methods provided practical ways for in situ determination of sulfite by non-professional operators with the modified PRA-formaldehyde method suited for food samples with less sulfite binding problems.

Abstract:Hydroxyl radicals from Fenton reaction can react with salicylate to form 2, 3 -dihydroxybenzoate. The quantitative analysis of hydroxyl radicals can be done through the colorimetric determination of 2, 3 -dihydroxybenzoate. The determination condition has been studied and a best determination program has been obtained. The test indicated that hydroxyl radicals from this system could be scavenged by reutin and quercitin. This system can be used as a convenient method for the selection of hydroxyl radical scavenger.
