Abstract:Nickel cobalt sulfides (NCS) have been regarded as potential candidate electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors owing to the attractive theoretical capacitance. However, traditional synthesis (i.e., hydrothermal) of NCS is both time-consuming and energy demanding, which restricts NCS large-scale practical applications. Herein, a green and effective microwave liquid synthesis followed by a simple post-annealing process was employed to anchor NCS nanoparticles on multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) forming NCS/CNTs-H composites. The NCS/CNTs-H composites hold significantly enhanced electrochemical performance is due to the combination of high redox activity of NCS anchored on superior conductivity of CNTs, which can serve as an effective carrier for NCS and decrease the aggregation of NCS nanoparticles. The optimized NCS/CNTs-H composites display high capacitance of 1261 F g−1 (175 mA h g−1) at 1 A g−1, with a remarkable rate capability, i.e., 84.4% retention from 1 to 50 A g−1. Besides, the assembled hybrid supercapacitor of NCS/CNTs-H//AC could deliver a high energy density (58.4 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 400 W kg−1) and remarkable long-term cycling stability (85.4% capacitance retention after 50 000 charge/discharge cycles). Such impressive electrochemical results indicate NCS/CNTs-H composites could be promising electrode materials for practical supercapacitor applications.
Nitrogen-Enriched Hollow Porous Carbon Nanospheres with Tailored Morphology and Microstructure for All-Solid-State Symmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:We develop a straightforward and highly efficient approach to design N-enriched hollow porous carbon nanospheres (N-HPCNs) based on the self-polymerization of dopamine in mixed water/ethanol solvents. The control of the morphology, pore parameters, and nitrogen content of N-HPCNs can be effectively achieved by simple tuning of the volume ratios of water/ethanol and the amounts of the solvents. The representative N-HPCNs exhibit the characteristics of spherical and hollow geometry with a uniform diameter (similar to 400 nm), high surface area (1789 m(2) g(-1)), abundant ultramicropores with reasonable supermicro- and mesopores, and high-level nitrogen content (up to 6.86 wt %). N-HPCNs as supercapacitor electrodes in 6 M KOH electrolyte show outstanding electrochemical performances including a high specific capacitance (353 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), superb rate capability (214 F g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)), and excellent cycling stability (91.9% capacitance retention at 1.0 A g(-1) after 10,000 cycles). Furthermore, the assembled symmetric all-solid-state supercapacitor based on N-HPCN electrodes and poly(vinyl alcohol)/KOH gel electrolyte exhibits high integrated energy-power density of 10.42 W h kg(-1) at 250 W kg(-1). This study provides promising prospects to design N-doped carbons with tailored morphology and microstructure for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Porous active core-shell carbon material with excellent synergistic effect has been regarded as a prospective material for supercapacitors. Herein, we report an integrated method for the facile synthesis of carbide-derived carbon (CDC) encapsulated with porous N-doped carbon () towards high-performance supercapacitors. Polydopamine (PDA) as nitrogen and carbon sources was simply coated on SiC nanospheres to form , which was then directly transformed into via a one-step molten salt electro-etching/in-situ doping process. The synthesized with hierarchically porous structure has a high specific surface area of 1191 m2 g−1. The CDC core and NC shell are typical amorphous carbon and more ordered N-doped carbon, respectively. Benefitting from its unique dual porous structures, the demonstrates high specific capacitances of 255 and 193 F g−1 at 0.5 and 20 A g−1, respectively. The reaction mechanism of the electro-etching/in-situ doping process has also been investigated through experimental characterizations and theoretical density functional theory calculations. It is suggested that the molten salt electro-etching/in-situ doping strategy is promising for the synthesis of active core-shell porous carbon materials with synergistic properties for supercapacitors without the need for additional doping/activation processes.

Synthesis of 3C/2H/6H heterojunction SiC nanowires with high-performance supercapacitors by thermal evaporation

Abstract:In this study, we present a novel approach to enhance the electrochemical energy storage performance of SiC nanowires (SiC NWs) by developing heterostructured SiC NWs with varying contents of 3C-, 2H-, and 6H-SiC using a simple thermal evaporation method. The contents of the three SiC crystal phases were regulated by adjusting the raw materials and reaction temperature, and Rietveld phase analysis was employed to determine their contents. The prepared SiC NWs were a mixed structure composed of 3C-SiC as the matrix embedded with 2H-SiC and 6H-SiC nanosegments. The conductive network with high specific surface area promotes the electrolyte ions to penetrate easily. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous structures with local structural distortion constructed by 3C-SiC, 2H-SiC, and 6H-SiC nanosegments in SiC NWs could promote charge separation. Based on the synergistic effects of the above multiple structures, the electrochemical properties of SiC NWs were hence improved. When the contents of 3C, 2H, and 6H-SiC in SiC NWs were 55%, 33%, and 12%, respectively, the specific capacitance at a scanning rate of 10 mv s-1 was 227.8 F g−1, which was 2.1 times of SiC NWs with contents of 69%, 26%, and 6% of 3C, 2H, and 6H. In addition, assembled symmetrical supercapacitor (SC) with excellent cycling stability (the retention rate was 90.12% after 10,000 cycles). This study is beneficial for designing SiC NWs with exceptional performance for SC applications.

Abstract:In the present study, two types of nanostructured electrodes consisting of ZnCo2O4 nanowire arrays (NWAs) and ZnCo2O4 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) were successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method followed by an annealing treatment. The ZnCo2O4 NWAs electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 2049 F g(-1) at 2 mA cm(-2) and an excellent rate capability of 83.6% as the current density was increased from 2 to 30 mA cm(-2). Moreover, the cycling stability of ZnCo2O4 could retain 88.8% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles at a high current density of 10 mA cm(-2). The ZnCo2O4 NSAs delivered a specific capacitance of 1159 F g(-1) at 2 mA cm(-2) and a long-term cycling performance of 79.9% capacitance retention. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled using ZCO-1 NWAs and activated carbon (AC) as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively, and the optimized ASC cell delivered a high energy density of 37.5 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 358.2 W kg(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance of ZnCo2O4 NWAs electrode implied that such electrode could be effectively used in supercapacitors (SCs).

Abstract:Nickel sulfide-based materials have shown great potential for electrode fabrication owing to their high theoretical specific capacitance but poor conductivity and morphological aggregation. A feasible strategy is to design hybrid structure by introducing highly-conductive porous carbon as the supporting matrix. Herein, we synthesized hybrid composites consisting of interconnected NiS-nanosheets and porous carbon (NiS@C) derived from Zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) using a facile low-temperature water-bath method. When employed as electrode materials, the as-prepared NiS@C nanocomposites present remarkable electrochemical performance owing to the complex effect that is the combined advantages of double-layer capacitor-type porous carbon and pseudocapacitortype interconnected-NiS nanosheets. Specifically, the NiS@C nanocomposites exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1827 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), and excellent cyclic stability with a capacity retention of 72% at a very high current density of 20 A g(-1) after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated hybrid supercapacitor delivers 21.6 Wh kg(-1) at 400 W kg(-1) with coulombic efficiency of 93.9%, and reaches 10.8 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 8000 W kg(-1), along with excellent cyclic stability of 84% at 5 A g(-1) after 5000 cycles. All results suggest that NiS@C nanocomposites are applicable to high-performance electrodes in hybrid supercapacitors and other energy-storage device applications. Abstract:As technology and society have continued to develop, the demand for energy storage solutions has increased significantly. Indeed, the development of lowcost, low -carbon, environmentally friendly energy conversion and storage systems is required to address the environmental and ecological problems faced by society. Due to their fast charging and discharging speeds, long cycle life and environmentally friendly characteristics, supercapacitors are widely used in many fields, especially in wind power generation systems, communication and transportation. Among all kinds of electrode materials, silicon carbide (SiC) nanomaterials and SiC-derived carbon (SiCCDC) materials present long life, high power density, and uncomplicated working mechanisms, which hold significant promise as electrode materials for supercapacitors. So far, various strategies and approaches for controlling the microstructure of SiC nanomaterials and SiC-CDC materials have been developed to achieve further improvement from preparation methods to electrochemical properties. As such, this review systematically introduces the common preparation methods of SiC nanomaterials and SiC-CDC, including the template method, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, high temperature halogen etching method and high temperature thermal decomposition process for preparing SiC-CDC. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods are discussed. Additionally, the review covers the progress in employing SiC nanomaterials and SiC-CDC materials as supercapacitor electrode materials in detail. However, despite this progress, the commercial application of SiC nanomaterials and SiC-CDC materials as supercapacitor electrodes has been restricted by some problems, in particular their limited conductivity and poor wettability. More importantly, the low energy density of supercapacitors is still a major problem. Thus, current methods and developmental trends of the strategies to improve electrochemical performance such as "highly conductive carbon material composite", "heteroatomic doping", "pseudocapacitance composites", "multi -stage pore structure design", "chemical activation" are further analyzed with regards to the current challenges. For example, the introduction of heteroatoms and functional group molecules for reactions into SiC and SiC-CDC materials can inhibit the agglomeration of materials (such as particles and nanosheets), improve their conductivity and wettability, and enhance their specific capacitance. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in the application of SiC nanomaterials and their derived carbons in the field of energy storage for supercapacitors are summarized and prospected. As current preparation methods are limited to the laboratory scale, the combination and improvement of different preparation methods and the development of large-scale and low-cost preparation technology are still the directions of the next efforts. This comprehensive review is expected to further advance the research of SiC nanomaterials and SiC-CDC materials.
NiCo2S4/carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites with a Chain-Like Architecture for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract:A novel type of NiCo2S4/carbon nanotube (NCS/CNT) nanocomposite has been successfully prepared via a simple refluxing route without any surfactant and template. SEM and TEM observations confirm that the as-obtained NiCo2S4/CNT nanocomposites exhibit a necklace-like architecture, in which the NiCo2S4 particles are threaded with CNTs. As electrode materials for supercapacitors, the nanocomposites deliver an obviously pseudocapacitive behavior enhanced by a synergistic effect. When the loaded amount of CNTs is 10 mg (NCS/CNT-10), the maximum specific capacitance reaches up to 2210 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) and the specific capacitance can be maintained at 1949 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 14000 multi-rate charge-discharge cycles. By applying the NCS/CNT-10 composite as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, an asymmetric supercapacitor was fabricated with excellent electrochemical performance. Such a large enhancement of the electrochemical performance is attributed to the strong necklace-like architectures, which possess advantages such as high electric conductivity, good mechanical stability and excellent strain accommodation.

Abstract:To overcome the inherent drawbacks of traditional solid-phase synthesis methods, this paper reported an in situ solid-phase synthesis method for preparing NiCo2Se4/carbon nanotube (NiCo2Se4/CNT) nanocomposite. By this method, NiCo2Se4 nanospheres are loaded onto the surface and inside the 3D conductive framework constructed by CNTs. This unique morphology provides conductivity and structural stability to the synthesized nanocomposite, resulting in good rate capability and cycling performance in both hybrid supercapacitor and sodium-ion battery applications. The hybrid supercapacitor device based on the synthesized nanocomposite can deliver an energy density of 33.32 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 0.844 kW kg(-1) while retaining 67.5% of energy density at a high power density of 11.73 kW kg(-1). After 20 000 cycles, the energy density still reaches 91.6% of that in the initial cycle. When employed as an anode material for SIBs, the synthesized nanocomposite exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 367.1 mAh g(-1) with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.27% after 300 cycles at 0.1 A g(-1), while 91.3% of the specific capacity is retained as the current density rises from 0.1 to 3 A g(-1). After 500 cycles at a current density of 2.0 A g(-1), the reversible specific capacity of the synthesized nanocomposite reaches 319 mAh g(-1) with a very low specific capacity attenuation of 0.021% per cycle. The developed method contributes to reducing the cost of preparing TMSe-based electrode materials while achieving high performance, thus boosting its application in electrochemical energy storage systems.

Abstract:We report an ingenious yet efficient method to fabricate ordered vertically aligned nitrogen- and sulfur-codoped carbon nanowire (NS-CNW) arrays by direct carbonization of the finely designed copolymer. The as-prepared vertically aligned NS-CNWs with unique electronic features and very narrow diameters facilitate ion diffusion to further exhibit ideal electrochemical properties (243.0 F g-1 at the current density of 0.1 A g-1) and excellent cycle stability (10 000 cycles) when applied to a supercapacitor electrode. The controllable design and copolymerization of conducting polymers, which can provide doped carbon nanowire array electrodes having high surface area with controllable components and uniform dimensions in a neat way, provide more flexibility to tailor the carbon-based electrodes toward specific applications.

Abstract:Herein, porous NiCo2S4/CNTs nanocomposites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method followed by the sulphurization process using different sulfide sources. By comparing two different sulfur sources, the samples using thioacetamide as sulfide source delivered more remarkable electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1765 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and an admirable cycling stability with capacitance retention of 71.7% at a high current density of 10 A g−1 after 5000 cycles in 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was successfully fabricated with the NiCo2S4/CNTs electrode as the positive electrode and graphene as the negative electrode. The device provided a maximum energy density of 29.44 W h kg−1 at a power density of 812 W kg−1. Even at a high power density of 8006 W kg−1, the energy density still reaches 16.68 W h kg−1. Moreover, the ASC presents 89.8% specific capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g−1. These results reveal its great potential for supercapacitors in electrochemical energy storage field.
ZIF-8@MWCNT-derived Carbon Composite As Electrode of High Performance for Supercapacitor

Abstract:Carbon materials from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) present poor electrochemical performance as electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this work, well-intergrown ZIF nanocystals are strung on MWCNTs to form necklace architecture. After carbonization and chemical etching, porous carbons with necklace architecture and proper hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure were obtained. It exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as electrode material for supercapacitor in 1 M H2SO4 solution such as high specific capacitance up to 326 F.g(-1) at 1 A.g(-1), good rate capability and excellent cycling stability of 99.7% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles. The main reasons are due to the increased surface area, the improved electrical conductivity, and the combination of micro-and meso-porous structure. Scalable in-situ formation of amorphous NiCoS x nanosheets on porous carbon-based nanofibers for asymmetric supercapacitors

Abstract:The delicate integration of carbonaceous scaffolds and transition metal sulfides (TMSs) has recently achieved a series of positive results in supercapacitors. However, these hybrids usually suffer from weak compatibility and combination at the heterogeneous interface, leading to the peeling of TMSs and capacity fading of electrodes during the long-term charge/discharge processes. Herein, a facile and scalable in-situ sulfidation technique is designed for the construction of stable supercapacitor electrodes, where porous NiCo/C nanofibers act as the core to support the shell materials of amorphous NiCoS x nanosheets, with the formation of well-defined NiCo/C@NiCoS x (CNCS) core-shell architectures. The mass loading and size of the outer NiCoS x nanosheets are heavily dependent on the carbonization temperature of the inner NiCo/C nanofibers, which can dramatically impact the electrochemical property of the hybrids. The optimized CNCS electrode exhibits an excellent specific capacity and a high rate capability. The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor presents a satisfactory energy density (38.73 W h kg −1 ) at 800 W kg −1 and a favorable stability with a high capacitance retention (93.1%) after 8000 cycles. This in-situ strategy to regulate the heterogeneous interface is promising for the development of stable TMS-based electrodes and supercapacitors.
Bilayer Carbon Nanowires/nickel Cobalt Hydroxides Nanostructures for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, we report on a unique design of bilayer nanostructure composed of a layer of nickel cobalt hydroxide (NCH) nanosheets anchored on carbon nanowires (CNWs) for high-performance supercapacitors. This bilayer nanostructure can be constructed on Ni foam by a facile electrochemical deposition method. Compared with pristine NCH nanosheets, the bilayer CNWs@NCHs nanostructure obviously exhibits enhanced performance with an ultrahigh capacitance over 2100 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), along with good rate capability and cycling stability. These promising results can be attributed the unique design of the electrode structure with several structural advantages. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The nanotube-consisted flower-like NiCo2S4 is successfully fabricated by a novel two-step hydrothermal technique. X-ray diffraction (XRD) identifies the spinel structure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imply the flower-like morphology of the synthesized NiCo2S4. The electrochemical behaviors are studied by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The NiCo2S4 nanotubes demonstrate enhanced pseudocapacitive performance of 429.5 C g(-1) at current density of 0.5 A g(-1). The NiCo2S4//AC device delivers high energy density of 37.69 Wh kg(-1), maximum power density of 4000.6 W kg(-1) and satisfied cycle property of 96% capacitance retention after over 7000 cycles. The results show that the NiCo2S4 nanotubes are promising electrode material for high performance supercapacitor applications.
Synthesis of Porous NiCoS Nanosheets with Al Leaching on Ordered Mesoporous Carbon for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:The ordered mesoporous carbon (SBA-C) with parallel channels, synthesized using mesoporous silicon (SBA-15) as a hard template, is decorated with nanoflowers assembled by porous nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCoS) nanosheets with Al leaching through an oil bath following by a hydrothermal method. The nickel cobalt aluminum layered double hydroxide (NiCoAl LDH) precursor is successfully in-situ transformed into NiCoS nanosheets with Al leaching due to the replace of OH and CO32- ions of the NiCoAl LDH precursor by S2- and the Kirkendall effects to etch and dissolve Al hydroxide. The NiCoS@SBA-C electrode shows surprising electrochemical performance, such as an excellent specific supercapacitance of 1757 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), superior rate capacity of 79.68% retention at 20 A g(-1), and good cycling stability. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is assembled employing NiCoS@SBA-C as positive electrode and SBA-C as negative electrode, which delivers a high energy density of 38.8 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 800 W kg(-1). The above results revel that incorporating ordered mesoporous carbon with transition metal sulfides is a candidate electrode material for application of energy storage devices.
One-step Carbonization Synthesis of Hollow Carbon Nanococoons with Multimodal Pores and Their Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Hollow carbon capsules with multimodal pores are highly promising for developing novel electrode materials for high-performance electrochemical devices due to their more active sites for ion and electron transfer. However, at present, most of the previous efforts are focused on the multistep process for the synthesis of hollow carbon nanostructures with individual pores. Herein, hollow carbon nanococoons (HCNCs) with non-spherical cavity and multimodal hierarchical pores have been facilely synthesized via a one-step carbonization of a Fe2O3/carbon precursor core/shell nanospindle at 850 degrees C. We interestingly found that during the carbonization, Fe2O3 was automatically "escaped" from the inside nanospindle, leading to the formation of new HCNCs. Most importantly, the spindle-shaped cavity of the obtained HCNCs with high conductivity can offer a multimodal ion diffusion pathway, which can facilitate the reaction kinetics in a supercapacitor. As a result, the HCNCs-based supacapacitor exhibits the capacitance of 220.0 F g(-1) at a given scan rate of 5 mV s(-1), 3.5 times higher than that of hollow carbon spheres, high stability with 98% of the initial capacity maintained even after 1000 cycles, and high rate capability. This work provides a new and facile avenue for enhancing performance of a HCNCs-based supercapacitor by using the non-spherical hollow structures with multimodal pores.
