Abstract:Bimagnetic Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanocomposite is synthesized in aqueous solution. The nanoparticles are characterized with TEM, FTIR, and magnetic measurements. The as-synthesized nanocomposite exhibits ferromagnetic properties at room temperature due to the exchange coupling between Pt3Co and Fe3O4. Magnetic properties of Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticle can be tuned by varying of the molar ratio of iron to platinum. Pt3Co/Fe3O4 nanoparticles exhibit higher saturation magnetization when the molar ratio of iron to platinum is 1.

Abstract:Magnetite can occur naturally in nano- to micro-size regimes and widely coexists with aqueous Fe2+ (Fe2+(aq)) in natural environments. However, the effects of magnetite particle size on its interaction with Fe2+(aq) in anoxic subsurface environments, particularly with redox-active organics, remain unclear. In this study, the interactions of Fe2+(aq) with magnetite particles of 12 nm versus 109 nm (Mag-12 vs. Mag-109), with/without anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), were studied based on equilibrium Fe2+(aq) concentrations, kinetics of AQDS reduction, and structural versus surface-localized Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios (xstru and xsurf) of magnetite. In the absence of AQDS, Mag-12 tends to release Fe2+(aq) at pH 7 but sorb Fe2+(aq) at pH 8, while Fe2+(aq) uptake by Mag-109 is observed at both pH 7 and 8. The amounts of Fe2+(aq) adsorbed per unit area of Mag-109 is higher than that of Mag-12, due to the higher electron-accepting capacity of Mag-109 that facilitates interfacial electron transfer (IET) from surface-associated Fe(II) to structural Fe(III). The increases of xstru and xsurf in Mag-109 after reaction with Fe2+(aq) at pH 7 and 8 suggest Fe2+(aq) incorporation or electron injection into the structure of Mag-109. The presence of AQDS promotes Fe2+(aq) uptake by both Mag-12 and Mag-109. However, AQDS reduction by Fe2+-amended Mag-12 results in the decrease of xstru and inhibits Fe2+(aq) incorporation or electron injection into the structure. On the contrary, the increase of xstru observed in Fe2+-amended Mag-109 after reaction with AQDS suggests that Fe2+(aq) incorporation or electron injection into the surface structure and then consequently into the interiors is more favorable for magnetite with larger particle sizes. The different flow directions of electron equivalents across the solid-solution interfaces can be attributed to the relatively higher electron-accepting capacity, i.e. redox potential, of Mag-109 than Mag-12; larger particle sizes facilitate IET from surface-associated Fe(II) to structural Fe(III) and promotes further Fe2+(aq) uptake, culminating in the pronounced changes of redox potentials in magnetite-bearing solutions. The results demonstrate that particle size and redox-active organics are important factors to affect reductive activity of Fe2+-magnetite system in redox-oscillating environments.

Magnetic control: Switchable ultrahigh magnetic gradients at Fe3O4 nanoparticles to enhance solution-phase mass transport

Abstract:Enhancing mass transport to electrodes is desired in almost all types of electrochemical sensing, electrocatalysis, and energy storage or conversion. Here, a method of doing so by means of the magnetic gradient force generated at magnetic-nanoparticle-modified electrodes is presented. It is shown using Fe3O4-nanoparticle-modified electrodes that the ultrahigh magnetic gradients (>108 T·m–1) established at the magnetized Fe3O4 nanoparticles speed up the transport of reactants and products at the electrode surface. Using the Fe(III)/Fe(II)-hexacyanoferrate redox couple, it is demonstrated that this mass transport enhancement can conveniently and repeatedly be switched on and off by applying and removing an external magnetic field, owing to the superparamagnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles. Thus, it is shown for the first time that magnetic nanoparticles can be used to control mass transport in electrochemical systems. Importantly, this approach does not require any means of mechanical agitation and is therefore particularly interesting for application in micro- and nanofluidic systems and devices.

Redistribution of Electron Equivalents between Magnetite and Aqueous Fe 2+ Induced by a Model Quinone Compound AQDS.

Abstract:The complex interactions between magnetite and aqueous Fe2+ (Fe-(aq)(2+)) pertain to many biogeochemical redox processes in anoxic subsurface environments. The effect of natural organic matter, abundant in these same environments, on Fe-(aq)(2+)-magnetite interactions is an additional complex that remains poorly understood. We investigated the influence of a model quinone molecule anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on Fe-(aq)(2+)-magnetite interactions by systematically studying equilibrium Fe-(aq)(2+) concentrations, rates and extents of AQDS reduction, and structural versus surface-localized Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios in magnetite under different controlled experimental conditions. The equilibrium concentration of Fe-(aq)(2+) in Fe2+-amended magnetite suspensions with AQDS proportionally changes with solution pH or initial AQDS concentration, but independent of magnetite loadings through the solid concentrations that were studied here. The rates and extents of AQDS reduction by Fe2+-amended magnetite proportionally increased with solution pH, magnetite loading, and initial Fe-(aq)(2+) concentration, which correlates with the corresponding change of reduction potentials for the Fe2+-magnetite system. AQDS reduction by surface-associated Fe(II) in the Fe2+-magnetite suspensions induces solid-state migration of electron equivalents from particle interiors to the near-surface region and the production of nonmagnetic Fe(II)-containing species, which inhibits Fe-(aq)(2+) incorporation or electron injection into the magnetite structure. This study demonstrates the significant influence of quinones on reductive activity of the Fe2+-magnetite system.

Biosynthesized Magnetite-Perovskite (Xfe2o4-Bifeo3) Interfaces for Toxic Trace Metal Removal from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:X-modified magnetite (XFe2O4; X = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni) was synthesized from goethite reduction, and inserted into the Fe -vacancy of perovskite (BiFeO3), via microbial Fe3+-> Fe2+ reduction by Shewanella (e.g. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and Shewanella putrefaciens CN32). We demonstrated that the average adsorption intensities of nine toxic trace metals (Cr3+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+), in Freundlich mode were 8.29-10.79 multiples higher than that in Langmuir mode, being more competitive than previously reported values. The fluorescence quenching is attributed to the orbital hybridization of molecular oxygen activation and trace metal (M) ions, which weakens the X2+-O-Fe3+-O-(Fe3+) coupling orbital. In addition Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 creates more oxygen vacancies to modify Ni down arrow -Fe down arrow-O down arrow d*-p hybridized orbitals for enhancing the local spin-orbit coupling with Cd-4d(10). This design idea can be extended to other direct biosynthetic magnetite-perovskite as highly efficient toxic trace metal removal agents.
Design of Magnetic Nanoparticles with High Magnetic Separation Efficiencies and Durability for Cu2+ Adsorption

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.
Facile self-assembly synthesis of titanate/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the efficient removal of Pb2+ from aqueous systems

Abstract:We report a novel process for the self-assembly of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) onto titanate nanotubes (TNTs), nanofibers (TNFs) and nanosheets (TNSs) to synthesize magnetic titanate nanocomposites. Both coulombic and van der Waals forces made important contributions to control the assembly process, in which the Fe3O4 NPs were uniformly dispersed onto the surfaces of the titanate nanostructures by a facile acid-induced method. The Fe3O4 NPs possessed unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, while the structures of the titanates determined the efficiency of Pb2+ removal. Interestingly, it was found that Pb2+ can be completely and quickly removed by the TNTs/Fe3O4 and TNSs/Fe3O4 nanocomposites. It is worth noting that the TNTs/Fe3O4 nanocomposite possessed the maximum adsorption capacity of 382.3 mg g−1, displaying a high efficiency for Pb2+ removal. The effects of pH value and contact time at different initial Pb2+ concentrations have been investigated. Based on the characterization results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, a possible removal mechanism was proposed. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for water treatment.

Abstract:Metal oxides, such as Fe3O4, hold promise for future battery applications due to their abundance, low cost, and opportunity for high lithium storage capacity. In order to better understand the mechanisms of multiple‐electron transfer reactions leading to high capacity in Fe3O4, a comprehensive investigation on local ionic transport and ordering is made by probing site occupancies of anions (O2−) and cations (Li+, Fe3+/Fe2+) using multiple synchrotron X‐ray and electron‐beam techniques, in combination with ab‐initio calculations. Results from this study provide the first experimental evidence that the cubic‐close‐packed (ccp) O‐anion array in Fe3O4 is sustained throughout the lithiation and delithiation processes, thereby enabling multiple lithium intercalation and conversion reactions. Cation displacement/reordering occurs within the ccp O‐anion framework, which leads to a series of phase transformations, starting from the inverse spinel phase and turning into intermediate rock‐salt‐like phases (LixFe3O4; 0 < x < 2), then into a cation‐segregated phase (Li2O⋅FeO), and finally converting into metallic Fe and Li2O. Subsequent delithiation and lithiation processes involve interconversion between metallic Fe and FeO‐like phases. These results may offer new insights into the structure‐determined ionic transport and electrochemical reactions in metal oxides, and those of other compounds sharing a ccp anion framework, reminiscent of magnetite.

Abstract:A novel interfacial coprecipitation method to prepare magnetite nanoparticles was proposed by us recently, which possesses advantages such as facility, Gram-scale synthesis and surface functionality. In this paper, the effects of precursors concentration and reaction temperature in interfacial coprecipitation method were systematically studied to evaluate the differences between classical and interfacial coprecipitation. It was found for first time that in both interfacial and classical coprecipitation there is a critical region of ferrous ion concentration to obtain magnetite at different amine concentrations, in which a phase of two-line ferrihydrite was considered to be an intermediate. Meanwhile, although the size of nanoparticles was not obviously varied by adjusting the reaction temperature, their dispersibility and saturation magnetization can be tailored. Besides, by comparing with classical coprecipitation, the mechanism in the interfacial coprecipitation was elucidated.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the most investigated nanomaterials so far and modern synthesis methods currently provide an exceptional control of their size, shape, crystallinity and surface functionalization. These advances have enabled their use in different fields ranging from environmental applications to biomedicine. However, several studies have shown that the precise composition and crystal structure of magnetite NPs depend on their redox phase transformations, which have a profound impact on their physicochemical properties and, ultimately, on their technological applications. Although the physical mechanisms behind such chemical transformations in bulk materials have been known for a long time, experiments on NPs with large surface-to-volume ratios have revealed intriguing results. This article is focused on reviewing the current status of the field. Following an introduction on the fundamental properties of magnetite and other related iron oxides (including maghemite and wüstite), some basic concepts on the chemical routes to prepare iron oxide nanomaterials are presented. The key experimental techniques available to study phase transformations in iron oxides, their advantages and drawbacks to the study of nanomaterials are then discussed. The major section of this work is devoted to the topotactic oxidation of magnetite NPs and, in this regard, the cation diffusion model that accounts for the experimental results on the kinetics of the process is critically examined. Since many synthesis routes rely on the formation of monodisperse magnetite NPs via oxidation of wüstite counterparts, the modulation of their physical properties by crystal defects arising from the oxidation process is also described. Finally, the importance of a precise control of the composition and structure of magnetite-based NPs is discussed and its role in their biomedical applications is highlighted.

Abstract:Present and emerging biotechnological applications for iron (oxyhydr)oxide nanomaterials depend on their interaction with microorganisms, as do their toxicity, transport, and fate in biological and environmental systems. However, mass or electron transfer along key molecular pathways at microbe-nanomaterial interfaces is extremely difficult to quantify because of system complexity. Inspired by Fe(II)-oxidizing microbes widespread in nature, we isolate and characterize one such pathway by examining the oxidation of Fe3-xTixO4 (magnetite-titanomagnetite) nanoparticles by the bacterial electron transfer enzyme MtoA, a decaheme c-type cytochrome. Oxidation by MtoA was studied as a function of the thermodynamic driving force for electron transfer by controlling the Ti(IV) doping content (x), which tunes the solid-state Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio built into the nanoparticles. A higher Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio appears to systematically increase the electron transfer kinetics to the cytochrome. In situ X-ray diffraction indicated that, during oxidation, the spinel ferrite lattice remains intact while structural Fe(II) is progressively depleted. Surface and atomic site specific Fe L-2,L-3-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism indicated that MtoA directly accesses magnetically ordered B-sublattice Fe(II) at the interface. This study provides the first quantitative insights into an isolated molecular pathway for biotransformation of iron (oxyhydr)oxide nanomaterials, and more generally, it also illustrates new techniques for probing these pathways in detail, featuring use of tailored nanoparticles, purified metalloenzyme, and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopies.
Crystal-Chemical and Biological Controls of Elemental Incorporation into Magnetite Nanocrystals

Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles possess numerous fundamental, biomedical, and industrial applications, many of which depend on tuning the magnetic properties. This is often achieved by the incorporation of trace and minor elements into the magnetite lattice. Such incorporation was shown to depend strongly on the magnetite formation pathway (i.e., abiotic vs biological), but the mechanisms controlling element partitioning between magnetite and its surrounding precipitation solution remain to be elucidated. Here, we used a combination of theoretical modeling (lattice and crystal field theories) and experimental evidence (high-resolution inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and X-ray absorption spectroscopy) to demonstrate that element incorporation into abiotic magnetite nanoparticles is controlled principally by cation size and valence. Elements from the first series of transition metals (Cr to Zn) constituted exceptions to this finding, as their incorporation appeared to be also controlled by the energy levels of their unfilled 3d orbitals, in line with crystal field mechanisms. We finally show that element incorporation into biological magnetite nanoparticles produced by magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) cannot be explained by crystal-chemical parameters alone, which points to the biological control exerted by the bacteria over the element transfer between the MTB growth medium and the intracellular environment. This screening effect generates biological magnetite with a purer chemical composition in comparison to the abiotic materials formed in a solution of similar composition. Our work establishes a theoretical framework for understanding the crystal-chemical and biological controls of trace and minor cation incorporation into magnetite, thereby providing predictive methods to tailor the composition of magnetite nanoparticles for improved control over magnetic properties.

Abstract:The presence of ferrous minerals has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on the destiny, migration, and availability of uranyl (U(VI)) in natural surroundings. The iron oxide/Fe(II) system is a multifaceted iron reduction system anchored to surfaces, encompassing various forms of iron and ferrous ions. Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of adsorbed ferrous iron on iron-based minerals to facilitate the reduction of heavy metal ions and radioactive nuclides. A range of techniques for characterization, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Mössbauer spectroscopy, were employed to explore the process of U(VI) adsorption and deposition, focusing on the limited region containing ferrous iron on the exposed crystalline surface of hematite. In this specific investigation, two kinds of hematite nanocrystals primarily exposing {001} and {012} crystal facets, referred to as HNPs and HNCs, were synthesized. Their ability to remove U(VI) was examined. Ferrous ions (Fe(II)) adsorbed onto the surface of hematite nanocrystals significantly enhanced the efficiency of U(VI) remediation. Furthermore, the HNCs/Fe(II) system showed better U(VI) reduction ability than the HNPs/Fe(II) system. Remarkably, HNCs produced and consumed more electrons and hydroxyl radicals, indicating a more intense response. This finding serves to highlight the significance of their role in interfacial effects and in predicting the spatial distribution of U(VI) in aqueous systems.
Identification of simultaneous U(VI) sorption complexes and U(IV) nanoprecipitates on the magnetite (111) surface

Abstract:Sequestration of uranium (U) by magnetite is a potentially important sink for U in natural and contaminated environments. However, molecular-scale controls that favor U(VI) uptake including both adsorption of U(VI) and reduction to U(IV) by magnetite remain poorly understood, in particular, the role of U(VI)-CO(3)-Ca complexes in inhibiting U(VI) reduction. To investigate U uptake pathways on magnetite as a function of U(VI) aqueous speciation, we performed batch sorption experiments on (111) surfaces of natural single crystals under a range of solution conditions (pH 5 and 10; 0.1 mM U(VI); 1 mM NaNO(3); and with or without 0.5 mM CO(3) and 0.1 mM Ca) and characterized surface-associated U using grazing incidence extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (GI-EXAFS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In the absence of both carbonate ([CO(3)](T), denoted here as CO(3)) and calcium (Ca), or in the presence of CO(3) only, coexisting adsorption of U(VI) surface species and reduction to U(IV) occurs at both pH 5 and 10. In the presence of both Ca and CO(3), only U(VI) adsorption (VI) occurs. When U reduction occurs, nanoparticulate UO(2) forms only within and adjacent to surface microtopographic features such as crystal boundaries and cracks. This result suggests that U reduction is limited to defect-rich surface regions. Further, at both pH 5 and 10 in the presence of both CO(3) and Ca, U(VI)-CO(3)-Ca ternary surface species develop and U reduction is inhibited. These findings extend the range of conditions under which U(VI)-CO(3)-Ca complexes inhibit U reduction.
Irradiation and Size Effects on Redox Reaction Mechanisms in Iron Oxides

Abstract:The ability to understand and control the reaction mechanisms of iron (Fe) nanoparticles (NPs) has an important impact on their applications. In this paper, applying in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we studied the irradiation- and size-dependent redox kinetics in Fe. (1) In the irradiation effect, weaker (intensity: ∼102 A/cm2) and stronger (intensity: ∼103–104 A/cm2) electron beam irradiations may facilitate the oxidation and reduction of Fe NPs, respectively. (2) In the size effect, Fe with a smaller size is first oxidized into FeO, while a large-sized Fe is directly oxidized into Fe3O4. The critical size is estimated to be ∼2.5 nm. Besides, both the atomistic investigations and theoretical calculations reveal the Fe/FeO and FeO/Fe3O4 phase boundary evolutions, which play a pivotal role in understanding the cation and anion migration pathways during the redox reactions. Abstract:Magnetite (Mt) has long been regarded as a stable phase with a low reactivity toward dissolved sulfide, but natural Mt with varying stoichiometries (the structural Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio, xstru) might exhibit distinct reactivities in sulfidation. How Mt stoichiometry affects its sulfidation processes and products remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate that xstru is a master variable controlling the rates and extents of sulfide oxidation by magnetite nanoparticles (11 ± 2 nm). At pH = 7.0-8.0 and the initial Fe/S molar ratio of 10-50, the partially oxidized magnetite (xstru = 0.19-0.43) can oxidize dissolved sulfide to elemental sulfur (S0), but only surface adsorption of sulfide, without interfacial electron transfer (IET), occurs on the nearly stoichiometric magnetite (xstru = 0.47). The higher initial rate and extent of sulfide oxidation and S0 production are observed with the more oxidized magnetite that has the higher electron-accepting capability from surface-complexed sulfide (S(-II)(s)). The FeS clusters formed from magnetite sulfidation can be oxidized by the most oxidized magnetite with xstru = 0.19 but not by other magnetite particles. A linear relationship between the Gibbs free energy of reaction and the surface area-normalized initial rate of sulfide oxidation is observed in all experiments under the different conditions, suggesting the S(-II)(s)-magnetite IET dominates magnetite sulfidation at high Fe/S molar ratios and near-neutral pH.
Fe nanoparticle-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes: One-pot synthesis and their applications in magnetic removal of heavy metal ions

Abstract:Magnetic-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with encapsulated Fe nanoparticles have been successfully fabricated via a one-step decomposition approach using ferrocene as a single precursor at a high temperature of 950 degrees C. The constituents, phase, and morphology have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Magnetic measurements reveal the ferromagnetic nature of the material with a magnetization saturation of 82.6 emu g(-1) at room temperature. Full nitrogen sorption isotherms show that the magnetic-functionalized MWCNTs have a porous structure (2.0 nm, 6.42 nm and 11.4 nm) and large surface area (295.4 m(2) g(-1)). Owing to their wonderful intrinsic properties, these magnetic-functionalized MWCNTs exhibit excellent ability to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. For example, the removal efficiency can be up to 97% at a Cu2+ concentration of 100 mg L-1 using these magnetic-functionalized MWCNTs as adsorbents. In addition, because the Fe nanoparticles were wrapped by MWCNTs, the material can be used in acidic solution and the removal efficiency of Cu2+ can reach 90% even in a strong acid solution (pH = 1).

Abstract:Graphene has been extensively concerned in multidisciplinary research fields due to its remarkably physicochemical characteristics. Herein, magnetic graphene/iron oxides composite (Fe3O4/GO) which was synthesized from graphene using a chemical reaction approach had been employed as a novel adsorbent for the preconcentration and solidification of U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The sorption behavior of U(VI) on the surface of Fe3O4/GO was carried out under ambient conditions such as contact time, pH and ionic strength according to concentration of CU(VI)initial=1.12×10−4mol/L. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were adopted to simulate sorption isotherms of U(VI) at three different temperatures relying on the concentration of CU(VI)initial=2.25×10−5 to 2.24×10−4mol/L, the experimental results suggested that the sorption reaction was favored at higher temperature. The pH-dependent and ionic strength-independent U(VI) sorption on Fe3O4/GO demonstrated that the sorption mechanism of U(VI) was inner-sphere surface complexation at low pH values, whereas the removal of U(VI) was achieved by simultaneous precipitation and inner-sphere surface complexation at high pH values. The maximum sorption capacity of U(VI) on Fe3O4/GO at T=293K and pH=5.5±0.1 was about 69.49mg/g higher than majority of materials and nanomaterials reported. Magnetic separation has been considered as an effective and quick technique for separating magnetic particles, without filtration and centrifugation. The Fe3O4/GO can be favorably separated from aqueous solution under an applied magnetic field from large volumes of aqueous solutions. The experimental results show that the Fe3O4/GO is a promising adsorbent for the removal of radionuclides and heavy metal ions from large volumes of aqueous solution.
