Abstract:Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), which precisely bio-synthesize magnetosomes of magnetite or greigite nanoparticles, have attracted broad interdisciplinary interests in microbiology, magnetic materials, biotechnology and geobiology. Previous experimental and numerical investigations demonstrate a close link among MTB species, magnetosome crystal habits, and magnetic characteristics, but quantitative constraints are currently lacking. In this study, we build three-dimensional finite-element micromagnetic models of intact magnetosome chains in common MTB species and corresponding collapsed chains. Realistic numerical microstructures were constructed for the three typical biogenic magnetite crystal forms—cuboctahedron, prism and bullet. Our calculations reveal characteristic magnetic properties associated with specific magnetite crystal forms and MTB species. Cuboctahedron and bullet crystals show distinct low coercivity (less than 30 mT) and high coercivity (greater than 50 mT) clusters, respectively. Prismatic crystals have a broad range of hysteresis parameters that are strongly controlled by chain structure. This magnetic property clustering, combined with magnetic unmixing methods and electron microscopy observations, can fingerprint biogenic magnetite components in geological and environmental samples. The passive magnetic orientation efficiency of various magnetosome chains was calculated. Some bullet-shaped magnetosome chains have higher magnetic moments than those with cuboctahedron and prism magnetosomes, which may enable larger MTB cells to overcome viscous resistance for efficient magnetic navigation.

Abstract:Numerous studies have reported the possibility of enhancing the properties of materials by incorporating foreign elements within their crystal lattice. In this context, while magnetite has widely known properties that have been used for various biomedical applications, the introduction of other metals within its structure could prospectively enhance its effectiveness. Specifically, zinc and cerium have demonstrated their biomedical potential through significant antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial features. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to develop a series of zinc and/or cerium-substituted magnetite nanoparticles that could further be used in the medical sector. The nanostructures were synthesized through the co-precipitation method and their morpho-structural characteristics were evaluated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses. Furthermore, the nanostructures were subjected to a ROS-Glo H2O2 assay for assessing their antioxidant potential, MTT assay for determining their anticancer effects, and antimicrobial testing against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans strains. Results have proven promising for future biomedical applications, as the nanostructures inhibit oxidative stress in normal cells, with between two- and three-fold reduction and cell proliferation in tumor cells; a two-fold decrease in cell viability and microbial growth; an inhibition zone diameter of 4–6 mm and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1–2 mg/mL.

Elongated magnetite nanoparticle formation from a solid ferrous precursor in a magnetotactic bacterium

Abstract:Magnetotactic bacteria are aquatic microorganisms that intracellularly mineralize ferrimagnetic nanoparticles enabling the cells to align with the geomagnetic field. The bacteria produce a magnetic mineral of species-specific phase (magnetite Fe(II)Fe(III)2O4 or greigite Fe(II)Fe(III)2S4), size, morphology and particle assembly. Several species produce crystals of unusual elongated particle shapes, which break the symmetry of the thermodynamically favoured isometric morphology. Such morphologies are thought to affect domain size and orientation of the internal magnetization. Therefore, they are interesting study objects to develop new synthetic strategies for the morphological control of nanoparticles. We investigate the formation of such irregularly shaped nanomagnets in the species Desulfovibrio magneticus RS-1. In contrast to previously described organisms, this bacterium accumulates iron predominantly as Fe(II) rather than Fe(III) consistent with an alternative oxidative biomineralization route. Further, using high-resolution electron microscopy, we observe an epitaxial relationship between precursor and the final mineral phase supporting the notion of a solid-state transformation pathway. The precursor is likely a green rust previously thought to convert to magnetite only by dissolution and re-precipitation. Our findings represent a novel observation in the interconversion of iron (oxyhydr)oxide materials and suggest that solid-state growth processes could be required to produce irregularly shaped, elongated magnetite nanocrystals.

Abstract:The indole C-2(delta 1) carbon of Trp 62 in hen egg-white lysozyme was selectively labeled with 13C through a series of reactions involving N'-formylkynurenine 62-lysozyme with K13CN, NaBH4-reduction, and acid-catalyzed dehydration. [delta 1-13C]Trp 62-lysozyme in which Trp 62 is labeled with 90% 13C has the same chemical and enzymatic properties as the native protein. The reverted lysozyme gave a single 13C-NMR signal at 125 ppm. pH-titration of the 13C signal indicated a transition at pH 3.9 for the free enzyme. In the presence of (GlcNAc)3, the resonance signals were shifted 0.5-1 ppm upfield, and the transitions in the titration curve were observed at pH 3.9 and 6.5. Asp 52 and Glu 35 were assigned to the groups with pKas of 3.9 and 6.5, respectively. In [2-13C]AHT 62-lysozyme, which has 3-(2-amino-3-hydroxy-3H-[2-13C]indol-3-yl)alanine (AHT) at position 62, AHT 62 behaved quite differently from Trp 62 on pH-titration of the 13C-label. These results suggest that a conformational change around Trp 62 is induced upon ionization of the catalytic residue and that the structural flexibility of the side chain of this aromatic residue in the substrate binding site is closely related to the function of lysozyme.

Abstract:Biomimetic material synthesis endeavors to replicate the formation of biominerals to achieve similar sophistication under ambient, sustainable conditions. Taking inspiration from magnetite formation in bacteria, renewable source polycations are leveraged to induce biomineralization‐reminiscent formation pathways in synthetics magnetite nanoparticle. While achieving precise control over particle size and morphology, the presented findings also emphasize magnetite's utility as a model system for investigating biomineralization processes in vitro. Magnetotactic bacteria produce magnetite nanoparticles called magnetosomes at ambient conditions via a protein‐stabilized transient amorphous precursor to obtain precise control over particle size and morphology. In a bioinspired approach, such biomineralization processes are emulated, mimicking proteins involved in magnetosome formation using the positively charged analog poly‐L‐arginine. While the additive is expensive, it remains elusive whether the change in magnetite formation mechanism arises solely from the polymer's cationic nature. This study uses different mass‐produced and sustainably sourced polycations to induce the biomineralization‐reminiscent formation of magnetite nanoparticles. These findings present how to achieve control over nanoparticle size (from 10 to 159 nm) and morphology (compact and sub‐structured) as well as magnetic properties (superparamagnetic, stable‐single‐domain, vortex state) at ambient temperature and pressure using these additives. Furthermore, the formation of large nanoparticles with the addition of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) at low alkalinity highlights how magnetotactic bacteria may produce magnetite nanoparticles under similar conditions. Confirming the polycations' ability to electrostatic stabilize amorphous ferrihydrite, it is anticipated that parametric in vitro studies on polymer properties will provide valuable insights into magnetite biomineralization and aid in rationally designing magnetic nanomaterials.

Abstract:Magnetosomes intracellularly biomineralized by Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are membrane-enveloped nanoparticles of the magnetic minerals magnetite (Fe3O4) or greigite (Fe3S4). MTB thrive in oxic-anoxic interface and exhibit magnetotaxis due to the presence of magnetosomes. Because of the unique characteristic and bionavigation inspiration of magnetosomes, MTB has been a subject of study focused on by biologists, medical pharmacologists, geologists, and physicists since the discovery. We herein first briefly review the features of MTB and magnetosomes. The recent insights into the process and mechanism for magnetosome biomineralization including iron uptake, magnetosome membrane invagination, iron mineralization and magnetosome chain assembly are summarized in detail. Additionally, the current research progress in biotechnological applications of magnetosomes is also elucidated, such as drug delivery, MRI image contrast, magnetic hyperthermia, wastewater treatment, and cell separation. This review would expand our understanding of biomineralization and biotechnological applications of bacterial magnetosomes.
Biosynthesized Magnetite-Perovskite (Xfe2o4-Bifeo3) Interfaces for Toxic Trace Metal Removal from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:X-modified magnetite (XFe2O4; X = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni) was synthesized from goethite reduction, and inserted into the Fe -vacancy of perovskite (BiFeO3), via microbial Fe3+-> Fe2+ reduction by Shewanella (e.g. Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and Shewanella putrefaciens CN32). We demonstrated that the average adsorption intensities of nine toxic trace metals (Cr3+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+), in Freundlich mode were 8.29-10.79 multiples higher than that in Langmuir mode, being more competitive than previously reported values. The fluorescence quenching is attributed to the orbital hybridization of molecular oxygen activation and trace metal (M) ions, which weakens the X2+-O-Fe3+-O-(Fe3+) coupling orbital. In addition Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 creates more oxygen vacancies to modify Ni down arrow -Fe down arrow-O down arrow d*-p hybridized orbitals for enhancing the local spin-orbit coupling with Cd-4d(10). This design idea can be extended to other direct biosynthetic magnetite-perovskite as highly efficient toxic trace metal removal agents.

Abstract:Magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the most investigated nanomaterials so far and modern synthesis methods currently provide an exceptional control of their size, shape, crystallinity and surface functionalization. These advances have enabled their use in different fields ranging from environmental applications to biomedicine. However, several studies have shown that the precise composition and crystal structure of magnetite NPs depend on their redox phase transformations, which have a profound impact on their physicochemical properties and, ultimately, on their technological applications. Although the physical mechanisms behind such chemical transformations in bulk materials have been known for a long time, experiments on NPs with large surface-to-volume ratios have revealed intriguing results. This article is focused on reviewing the current status of the field. Following an introduction on the fundamental properties of magnetite and other related iron oxides (including maghemite and wüstite), some basic concepts on the chemical routes to prepare iron oxide nanomaterials are presented. The key experimental techniques available to study phase transformations in iron oxides, their advantages and drawbacks to the study of nanomaterials are then discussed. The major section of this work is devoted to the topotactic oxidation of magnetite NPs and, in this regard, the cation diffusion model that accounts for the experimental results on the kinetics of the process is critically examined. Since many synthesis routes rely on the formation of monodisperse magnetite NPs via oxidation of wüstite counterparts, the modulation of their physical properties by crystal defects arising from the oxidation process is also described. Finally, the importance of a precise control of the composition and structure of magnetite-based NPs is discussed and its role in their biomedical applications is highlighted.

Abstract:Examining the composition and heat treatment effects of co-precipitated Co0.7Mn0.3CrxFe2-xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1) ferrite nanoparticles provides valuable insights into the structural, morphological, optical, magnetic, and electrical properties of these materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement analyses confirm the spinel cubic crystalline phase of the samples, indicating the formation of well-defined crystal structures. Transmission electron microscope micrographs manifest the nanoscale nature of the produced specimens and their narrow particle size distribution with a small standard deviation. This uniformity is often desirable in many applications because it confirms the similarity of the properties and behaviors of the nanoparticles. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study suggests that the substitution of Cr3+ ions at octahedral sites influences molecular stability. Annealing causes a slight expansion in bond length and a subsequent decrease in stability. The presence of Cr3+ ions enhances the strength of the specimens, while annealing weakens them. This indicates a fine balance between composition and processing conditions in determining the strength of the materials. The estimated optical indirect bandgap undergoes a redshift by adding Cr3+ ions. Annealing at elevated temperatures reduces the bandgap due to the quantum confinement effect, indicating the tunability of optical properties through compositional and thermal control. Samples with x ≥ 0.6 exhibit nearly zero coercivity, indicating superparamagnetic behavior, which have promising applications. The preference of Cr3+ ions to occupy octahedral B-sites influences the magnetic behavior of the materials. The dielectric polarization and dielectric loss improved by adding Cr3+ ions, while the alternating current conductivity decreased. From impedance spectroscopy, the real and imaginary parts, Z' and Z", were increased by increasing Cr content. Furthermore, the annealing process greatly affects the electrical properties of the specimens. Overall, the study emphasizes the intricate relationship between composition, annealing conditions, and the resulting structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of Co-Mn-Cr ferrite nanoparticles, providing significant observations for the development of tailored materials for diverse applications in electronics, magnetics, and medicine.

Abstract:Recently, nanosized ferrites with spinel structure have been actively discussed as possible magnetically controlled catalysts, sorbents, and biomedical materials. For the large-scale practical use of ferrites, it is necessary to find simple, reproducible, and cost-effective methods that allow one to control the characteristics of nanosized ferrites with spinel structure to obtain samples with a large number of active centers for catalysis and sorption, low toxicity for biomedical applications, and good magnetic properties required to control such materials by an external magnetic field. This review summarizes the results of scientific studies (predominantly over the last 5–10 years) focused on different methods of synthesis of nanosized ferrites with spinel structure and composite materials, and considers approaches to control their catalytic, sorption, and magnetic characteristics and prospects of their application as magnetically sensitive catalysts (Fenton-like processes), sorbents (extraction of heavy metals, separation of ions, separation of valuable metals), and materials for drug delivery, hyperthermia, and MRI contrast.

Abstract:<p>Despite decades-long research efforts, the remediation of groundwater contaminated by heavy metals has remained a significant challenge. Recent studies have demonstrated that in situ formation of magnetite might be an effective method to more permanently immobilize metal(loid)s. However, how the co-existence of additional heavy metals affects the synthesis of magnetite under environmentally relevant conditions and how it affects the associated heavy metal removal efficiency have remained unclear. Here, a common magnetite synthesis procedure was used to synthesize Cu-, Cd-, and Pb-substituted magnetites at circumneutral pH with variable heavy metal concentrations. The synthesized mineral products were then subjected to digestion, Mössbauer, XRD, SEM-EDS, magnetic susceptibility and surface area measurements, as well as isothermal adsorption experiments. The presence of additional divalent heavy metals during synthesis affected the characteristics of the Fe mineral products. Magnetite formed in the presence of heavy metals was poorly crystalline and impure. The mineralogy and morphology of the products was regulated by the surface affinity of the heavy metal. The co-existence of divalent heavy metal cations that have higher surface affinity than Fe(II) suppressed the mineral growth of more crystalline Fe oxides, including magnetite. Minerals synthesized in the absence of heavy metals had higher capacity and affinity for heavy metals than minerals synthesized in the presence of those metals because of the effects of altered mineral surface structure and surface area on adsorption. These results help us understand how different types and concentrations of heavy metals affect magnetite synthesis and its suitability for in situ groundwater remediation.</p>

Abstract:Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanocrystals (MNCs) are among the most-studied magnetic nanomaterials, and many reports of solution-phase synthesis of monodisperse MNCs have been published. However, lack of reproducibility of MNC synthesis is a persistent problem, and the keys to producing monodisperse MNCs remain elusive. Here, we define and explore synthesis parameters in this system thoroughly to reveal their effects on the product MNCs. We demonstrate the essential role of benzaldehyde and benzyl benzoate produced by oxidation of benzyl ether, the solvent typically used for MNC synthesis, in producing monodisperse MNCs. This insight allowed us to develop stable formulas for producing monodisperse MNCs and propose a model to rationalize MNC size and shape evolution. Solvent polarity controls the MNC size, while short ligands shift the morphology from octahedral to cubic. We demonstrate preparation of specific assemblies with these MNCs. Abstract:Today, magnetic nanoparticles are present in multiple medical and industrial applications. We take a closer look at the synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles through the co-precipitation of iron salts in an alkaline environment. The variation of the synthesis parameters (ion concentration, temperature, stirring rate, reaction time and dosing rate) change the structure and diameter of the nanoparticles. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Magnetic nanoparticles ranging from 5 to 16 nm in diameter were synthesized and their chemical structure was identified. Due to the evaluation of Raman spectra, TEM and XRD, the magnetite and maghemite nanoparticles can be observed and the proportion of phases and the particle size can be related to the synthesis conditions. We want to highlight the use of Raman active modes A1g of spinel structured iron oxides to determine the content of magnetite and maghemite in our samples. Magnetite nanoparticles can be derived from highly alkaline conditions even without establishing an inert atmosphere during the synthesis. The correlation between the particle properties and the various parameters of the synthesis was modelled with linear mixture models. The two models can predict the particle size and the oxidation state of the synthesized nanoparticles, respectively. The modeling of synthesis parameters not only helps to improve synthesis conditions for iron oxide nanoparticles but to understand crystallization of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Present and emerging biotechnological applications for iron (oxyhydr)oxide nanomaterials depend on their interaction with microorganisms, as do their toxicity, transport, and fate in biological and environmental systems. However, mass or electron transfer along key molecular pathways at microbe-nanomaterial interfaces is extremely difficult to quantify because of system complexity. Inspired by Fe(II)-oxidizing microbes widespread in nature, we isolate and characterize one such pathway by examining the oxidation of Fe3-xTixO4 (magnetite-titanomagnetite) nanoparticles by the bacterial electron transfer enzyme MtoA, a decaheme c-type cytochrome. Oxidation by MtoA was studied as a function of the thermodynamic driving force for electron transfer by controlling the Ti(IV) doping content (x), which tunes the solid-state Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio built into the nanoparticles. A higher Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio appears to systematically increase the electron transfer kinetics to the cytochrome. In situ X-ray diffraction indicated that, during oxidation, the spinel ferrite lattice remains intact while structural Fe(II) is progressively depleted. Surface and atomic site specific Fe L-2,L-3-edge X-ray magnetic circular dichroism indicated that MtoA directly accesses magnetically ordered B-sublattice Fe(II) at the interface. This study provides the first quantitative insights into an isolated molecular pathway for biotransformation of iron (oxyhydr)oxide nanomaterials, and more generally, it also illustrates new techniques for probing these pathways in detail, featuring use of tailored nanoparticles, purified metalloenzyme, and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopies.
Ferromagnetic–Antiferromagnetic Coupling in Gas‐Phase Synthesized M(Fe, Co, and Ni)–Cr Nanoparticles for Next‐Generation Magnetic Applications

Abstract:Grammatikopoulos and co‐workers highlight fascinating magnetic phenomena that emerge by combining ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic metals in nanoparticles (case‐study: M–Cr). They advocate for gas‐phase synthesis as a means to fine‐tune their configuration and manipulate properties such as the exchange bias, Curie temperature, or magnetocaloric effect, with potential applications in memory cells and recording heads, induced hyperthermia treatment, magnetic cooling, and more. Combining ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic materials in nanoalloys (i.e., nanoparticles, NPs, containing more than one element) can create a diverse landscape of potential electronic structures. As a result, a number of their magnetic properties can be manipulated, such as the exchange bias between NP core and shell, the Curie temperature of nanoparticulated samples, or their magnetocaloric effect. In this work, such a family of materials (namely M–Cr NPs where M is Fe, Co, Ni, or some combination of them) is reviewed with respect to the tunability of their magnetic properties via optimized doping with Cr up to its solubility limit. To this end, gas‐phase synthesis has proven a most effective method, allowing excellent control over the physical structure, composition, and chemical ordering of fabricated NPs by appropriately selecting various deposition parameters. Recent advances in this field (both experimental and computational) are distilled to provide a better understanding of the underlying physical laws and point toward new directions for cutting‐edge technological applications. For each property, a relevant potential application is associated, such as memory cells and recording heads, induced hyperthermia treatment, and magnetic cooling, respectively, aspiring to help connect the output of fundamental and applied research with current real‐world challenges.

Controlling the Size and Size Distribution of Magnetite Nanoparticles on Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Nanocomposites composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were fabricated by using ethylene glycol as reductant at 160°C. The composites were subsequently annealed under different temperatures in an inert atmosphere. The products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results showed that the Fe3O4 transformed from amorphous phase into single crystalline nanoparticles after annealing and that the annealing temperature played a crucial role in controlling the size and the size distribution of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The average size of Fe3O4 nanoparticles increased with increasing annealing temperature. Meanwhile, the size distribution of nanoparticles became wide with the increase of temperature. It was caused by the gradual decomposition of oleate groups attached on the CNT surface. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements revealed that crystalline Fe3O4/CNTs displayed superparamagnetic behavior under room temperature.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has gained much attention for its potential application in medical science. Iron oxide nanoparticles have demonstrated a promising effect in various biomedical applications. In particular, magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles are widely applied due to their biocompatibility, high magnetic susceptibility, chemical stability, innocuousness, high saturation magnetisation, and inexpensiveness. Magnetite (Fe3O4) exhibits superparamagnetism as its size shrinks in the single-domain region to around 20 nm, which is an essential property for use in biomedical applications. In this review, the application of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) in the biomedical field based on different synthesis approaches and various surface functionalisation materials was discussed. Firstly, a brief introduction on the MNP properties, such as physical, thermal, magnetic, and optical properties, is provided. Considering that the surface chemistry of MNPs plays an important role in the practical implementation of in vitro and in vivo applications, this review then focuses on several predominant synthesis methods and variations in the synthesis parameters of MNPs. The encapsulation of MNPs with organic and inorganic materials is also discussed. Finally, the most common in vivo and in vitro applications in the biomedical world are elucidated. This review aims to deliver concise information to new researchers in this field, guide them in selecting appropriate synthesis techniques for MNPs, and to enhance the surface chemistry of MNPs for their interests.

In Situ Major and Trace Element Analysis of Magnetite from Carbonatite-Related Complexes: Implications for Petrogenesis and Ore Genesis

Abstract:Magnetite (Fe3O4) is one of the most common accessory minerals in magmatic rocks, and it can accommodate a wide variety of major, minor and trace elements that can be measured by laser ablation ICP-MS. In this study, we investigate the chemical compositions of magnetite from four carbonatite complexes (Oka, Mushgai Khudag, Hongcheon and Bayan Obo). The minor elements (Mg, Ti, Al, Mn) in magnetite vary significantly both within and between different complexes. High field strength elements (Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, U, Th) are generally depleted in magnetite from carbonatite complexes, whereas K, Rb, Cs, Ca and P are commonly below detection limits. V and Zn display significant variations from tens to thousands of ppm. Co, Ni and Ga are present in ppm or tens of ppm, whereas Cu, Sr, Y, Ba and Pb are characterized by sub-ppm levels. Mo and Ge are identified at the ppm level, whereas a consistent concentration of 2-5 ppm is observed for Ge. The determined chemical compositions of magnetite from carbonatite complexes are quite distinguishable compared to those formed in silicate and sulfide melts. This is clearly shown using multielement variation diagrams, and the distinct signatures of carbonatiterelated magnetite include strong positive anomalies of Mn and Zn and negative anomalies of Cu, Co and Ga. The discriminant diagrams of Ti vs. Zr + Hf, Ti vs. Nb + Ta and Ni/Cr vs. Ti are applicable for distinguishing magmatic and hydrothermal magnetite in carbonatite-related environments. In addition, the discriminant diagram of Zn/Co vs. Cu/Mo and Cu vs. Zr + Hf can be used to distinguish carbonatite-related magnetite from magnetite that formed in other environments.

Abstract:Various organisms possess a genetic program that enables the controlled formation of a mineral, a process termed biomineralization. The variety of biological material architectures is mind-boggling and arises from the ability of organisms to exert control over crystal nucleation and growth. The structure and composition of biominerals equip biomineralizing organisms with properties and functionalities that abiotically formed materials, made of the same mineral, usually lack. Therefore, elucidating the mechanisms underlying biomineralization and morphogenesis is of interdisciplinary interest to extract design principles that will enable the biomimetic formation of functional materials with similar capabilities. Herein, we summarize what is known about iron oxides formed by bacteria and mollusks for their magnetic and mechanical properties. We describe the chemical and biological machineries that are involved in controlling mineral precipitation and organization and show how these organisms are able to form highly complex structures under physiological conditions.
