Abstract:In nature, chirality displays itself in diverse forms and on various hierarchical scales. Among the various types of chirality, supramolecular chirality is of particular interest due to its ability to amplify and induce chirality, which aids in understanding the fundamental principles of chirality transfer and is also suitable for chirality applications at the macroscopic scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel chiral organic semiconductor 2,9-di(hexan-2-yl)anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']diisoquinoline-1,3,8,10 (2H, 9H)-tetraone (ClCPDI-C6) and its selfassembly into supramolecular nanowires (NWs). The chirality of the NWs was successfully transferred via intra- and inter-molecular interactions from the chiral pendant to the perylene diimide (PDI) core after self-assembly. Upon exposing the organic NWs to phenylhydrazine dopant vapor, the average mobility of the NW transistor was increased from 0.0085 to 0.026 cm2 V-1 s-1. Additionally, phenylhydrazine molecular doping of the NWs significantly enhanced their optical performance in comparison with the undoped NWs, with improved photoresponsivity (R) (similar to 3 times higher), photosensitivity (P) (similar to 10 times higher), external quantum efficiency (similar to 3 times higher), and detectivity (D*) (similar to 8 times higher). The detectivity of the phenylhydrazine-doped NWs was 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than that previously reported for chiral PDI NWs. Notably, they showed a fast and stable real-time photoswitching of both undoped and doped ClCPDI-C6 NWs (<90 ms), indicating a high sensitivity to visible light and great potential in photodetector and photoswitching applications. From density functional theory calculations, after absorbing phenylhydrazine on the ClCPDI-C6 NWs, the increased electron affinity contributes to increased optoelectronic performance. Our investigation paves the way for future in-depth studies on the relationship between the structure and supramolecular chirality with optoelectronic device performance.

Abstract:Optoelectronic devices based on metal halide perovskites, including solar cells and light-emitting diodes, have attracted tremendous research attention globally in the last decade. Due to their potential to achieve high carrier mobilities, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials can enable high-performance, solution-processed field-effect transistors (FETs) for next-generation, low-cost, flexible electronic circuits and displays. However, the performance of perovskite FETs is hampered predominantly by device instabilities, whose origin remains poorly understood. Here, perovskite single-crystal FETs based on methylammonium lead bromide are studied and device instabilities due to electrochemical reactions at the interface between the perovskite and gold source-drain top contacts are investigated. Despite forming the contacts by a gentle, soft lamination method, evidence is found that even at such "ideal" interfaces, a defective, intermixed layer is formed at the interface upon biasing of the device. Using a bottom-contact, bottom-gate architecture, it is shown that it is possible to minimize such a reaction through a chemical modification of the electrodes, and this enables fabrication of perovskite single-crystal FETs with high mobility of up to ≈15 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 80 K. This work addresses one of the key challenges toward the realization of high-performance solution-processed perovskite FETs.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead-iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, hereafter referred to as MAPbI(3)) perovskite has emerged as a dazzling nova in the solar cell realm. To date, the surface physics of these materials is still puzzling, but in this work, we demonstrate that the optical dynamics in MAPbI(3) is primarily determined by the surface states. Pb dangling bonds on the surface of MAPbI(3) introduce shallow electronic states. The carrier localization effect for these electronic states is rather weak as the lifetimes of the carriers on the iodine-poor surface are comparative to those in the interior region of MAPbI(3). In contrast, rich-iodine on the surface of MAPbI(3) induces deep trap centers for the carriers, which are detrimental to long carrier diffusion lengths. It is further proved that the surface passivation, which surprisingly prolongs the carrier diffusion lengths, mainly works on the rich-iodine on the surface rather than the Pb dangling bonds. This better understanding of the surface physics could provide essential information for improving the performance of photoelectronic devices based on MAPbI(3) perovskites.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Charge Transport in CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskites Predicted from First-Principles

Abstract:Both intrinsic and extrinsic charge transport properties of methylammonium lead triiodide perovskites are investigated from first-principles. The weak electron-phonon couplings are revealed, with the largest deformation potential (~ 5 eV) comparable to that of single layer graphene. The intrinsic mobility limited by the acoustic phonon scattering is as high as a few thousands cm2 V−1 s−1 with the hole mobility larger than the electron mobility. At the impurity density of 1018 cm−3, the charged impurity scattering starts to dominate and lowers the electron mobility to 101 cm2 V−1 s−1 and the hole mobility to 72.2 cm2 V−1 s−1. The high intrinsic mobility warrants the long and balanced diffusion length of charge carriers. With the control of impurities or defects as well as charge traps in these perovskites, enhanced efficiencies of solar cells with simplified device structures are promised.

Abstract:The development of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells requires critical understanding in the charge-carrier behaviors in the perovskite light absorbers and devices. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) has been applied as a powerful tool to probe the electrical potential distribution of perovskite films and devices, providing fundamental insights into their charge-carrier properties. When measuring the material photoresponses, various approaches have been employed to illuminate the samples. Here, we measured the surface potential of the layer in the regular mesoporous structure (CH3NH3PbI3/m-TiO2/c-TiO2/FTO) and inverted planar structure (CH3NH3PbI3/NiO/FTO) devices via KPFM. Effects of two representative illumination methods are compared-illumination from top, and from underneath through the transparent glass substrate. By comparing the variation in surface potential under two illumination methods, the surface potential of the perovskite-absorbing layer in a regular structure is higher than that in the inverted structure. The potential difference in two structures implies that the photogenerated charge carriers are injected to the TiO2 electron-transport layer and NiO hole-transport layer, resulting in positive charges and negative charges accumulated in the perovskite-absorbing layer. We demonstrated that the illumination direction has an impact on the surface potential measurement. For the CH3NH3PbI3/TiO2 structure, illumination from underneath facilitates a larger potential change. While for the CH3NH3PbI3/NiO structure with insensitive photoresponse in potential change, the illumination direction has a minor effect.

Abstract:The organo-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 has a great potential as the photovoltaic material due to its high energy conversion efficiency. In this work, electronic structures, mechanical and optical properties of CH3NH3PbI3 in cubic, tetragonal and orthorhombic structures are systematically investigated using density functional theory, in which unitary and arbitrary CH3NH3 molecular configurations in cubic and tetragonal phases are considered. Among them, the orthorhombic phase possesses the largest band gap and elastic moduli. For the tetragonal phase, the CH3NH3PbI3 with the arbitrary CH3NH3 molecular orientation owns higher Young's/shear moduli and lower band gap than that with the unitary orientation, while the opposite trend is observed for the cubic phase. Moreover, the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases possess similar peak energy levels of the dielectric function, absorption coefficients and reflectivity. In the case of the cubic phases, these peaks move towards the low energy direction as a result of their decreased band gaps. Meanwhile, optical absorption peaks of materials with unitary molecular configurations locate at higher energy levels than those with arbitrary orientations. These results are expected to arouse the attention on the effect of crystal structure and the CH3NH3 molecular orientation on the properties and guide the future performance optimization of CH3NH3PbI3 through structural design.

Abstract:The structural, electronic, mechanical, and optical properties of pseudo-cubic CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite have been studied within the framework of density functional theory, in line with solar cell applications. The computed values of lattice and elastic constants concurred with the available theoretical and experimental data. This compound has a semi-conducting behavior, with a direct band gap of about 1.49 eV. Note that the solar radiation spectrum has a maximum energy intensity value of approximately 1.50 eV. Thus, semiconductors with such gaps are preferred for photovoltaic applications. Its elastic parameters reveal that it is a ductile material that is mechanically stable. Optical descriptors such as refractive index, reflectivity, extinction, energy loss, and absorption have been explored with the aim of establishing the optical features of the material. Our findings demonstrate that this perovskite is suitable for solar cell applications based on the size and nature of the band gap, as also supported by the obtained upper limit value of simulated power conversion efficiency via the spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency mathematical model.

Abstract:The inversion and tuning of excitonic optical activity occur in perovskite nanoplatelets, originating from interactions between their intrinsic structural chirality and the surface chiral ligands. Either chiral ligand‐induced intrinsic chirality inversion or negative and positive Cotton effects induced by the ligands via electronic coupling between the ligand and the nanoplatelets are identified. Owing to their attractive optical and chiroptical properties, chiral metal halide perovskites have received increasing attention, with potential applications ranging from photonics and optoelectronics to spintronics. Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals with either intrinsic or extrinsic (e.g., chiral ligand‐induced) chirality have been reported recently, and the interplay between these two types of chirality has yet to be addressed. Herein, the inversion and tuning of excitonic optical activity is reported in intrinsically chiral perovskite nanoplatelets, originating from interactions between their structural chirality (due to the spontaneously formed screw dislocations in the crystalline lattice) and the surface enantiomeric (R/S) chiral ligands R/S‐phenylethylammonium bromide. Through post‐preparative exposure of the perovskite nanoplatelets to these R/S ligands of varied contents, either chiral ligand‐induced intrinsic chirality inversion or negative and positive Cotton effects induced by the ligands via electronic coupling between the ligand and the nanoplatelets are identified. These findings deepen understanding of the modulation of excitonic optical activity in chiral perovskites and can guide the rational design and synthesis of novel chiral materials.

Abstract:The microscopic origin of the remarkable optoelectronic properties of one of the most studied contemporary materials remains unclear. Here, we identify the existence of magnetic interactions between intermolecular proton orbitals in CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3. In particular, a unique sharp drop and a pronounced step-up discontinuity in the magnetic susceptibility at the tetragonal-to-cubic phase transitions are identified in CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3, respectively. The magnetic interactions in the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases are dependent on thermal history and lattice orientation while nearly independent of the applied external magnetic field. In CH3NH3PbBr3, the CH3 and NH3 + components reorient in an uncorrelated fashion resulting the cubic phase to also exhibit magnetic anisotropy. Our findings provide a potential link connecting the highly light-absorbing CH3NH3 + and the exceptional properties of the charge carriers of the inorganic framework in hybrid perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Rivaling state-of-the-art crystalline silicon, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been intensely studied in recent years. Surface and interfacial engineering have been a focus for performance improvement. Even though significant progress has been made during the last decade in terms of the diversity and capability of perovskite-based devices, the structure-property relationship, particularly at the surface, which governs the real-world performance of these applications, is still unresolved. In the article, this issue was addressed by employing synchrotron-related experimental measurements, and a mechanism that correlates microstructure with surface chemistry was resolved. As a powerful and highly sensitive spectromicroscopy, soft x ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM) was used to probe the surface of perovskite films varying in post solvent annealing. Static and <i>in situ</i> grazing incidence hard x ray diffraction (GIXD) was used to track the grain growth dynamics during the film formation process. It was found that the nature of the surfaces was dictated by the local chemistry that varied due to mass flow during the development of the microstructure. Combining optical and electronic characterizations, it was confirmed that a more homogenous chemistry, i.e., uniform chemical components and properties, along with reduced strain and grain boundary energies, yielded more defect-tolerant films. Grain boundaries were more favorable for screening carriers than those in the control film. Our findings underscore the importance of the uniformity in the surface for developing a chemistry-structure-property relationship in perovskite materials, as well as engineering local chemistry toward high-performance and stable devices.

Abstract:The spin degree of freedom of charge carriers in halide-perovskite semiconductors can be highly useful for information photonics applications. The Faraday effect is known to be the best indicator of paramagnetism of the material and of the spin-light interaction. In this work, the Faraday effect is demonstrated, for the first time, in a hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite MAPbI3 (MA+=CH3NH+3). The Faraday rotation and birefringence were measured across the tetragonal-cubic phase transition at 327 K. The Faraday rotation is strongly suppressed below the phase transition temperature due to anisotropy (linear birefringence) of the tetragonal crystal phase. The situation changes drastically above the phase transition temperature, when the crystal becomes optically isotropic. The emerging Faraday rotation obeys the Curie law, demonstrating its population-related paramagnetic nature. This observation opens new prospects for application of these systems and for their investigations using methods of the polarization noise spectroscopy applicable to optically anisotropic materials.

Constructing the Electronic Structure of CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite Thin Films from Single-Crystal Band Structure Measurements.

Abstract:Photovoltaic cells based on halide perovskites, possessing remarkably high power conversion efficiencies have been reported. To push the development of such devices further, a comprehensive and reliable understanding of their electronic properties is essential but presently not available. To provide a solid foundation for understanding the electronic properties of polycrystalline thin films, we employ single-crystal band structure data from angle-resolved photoemission measurements. For two prototypical perovskites (CH3NH3PbBr3 and CH3NH3PbI3), we reveal the band dispersion in two high-symmetry directions and identify the global valence band maxima. With these benchmark data, we construct "standard" photoemission spectra from polycrystalline thin film samples and resolve challenges discussed in the literature for determining the valence band onset with high reliability. Within the framework laid out here, the consistency of relating the energy level alignment in perovskite-based photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices with their functional parameters is substantially enhanced.

Abstract:The introduction of functional diamino organic cations between inorganic Pb–I octahedrons to form a new quasi three-dimensional (3D) diamino perovskite is a strategy for expanding the family of perovskite materials, obtain excellent photovoltaic materials, and solve the problems of low thermal and chemical stability of traditional perovskites. In this work, the electronic structure, carrier transport and optical absorption properties of two new perovskites with pyridine-2,5-diamine (PDA) and 4,4′-bipyridine (BPD) as the organic cations are investigated using first-principles calculations. It is found that diamino pyridine and bipyridine have a strong effect on the perovskite band structure. The results show that, unlike for the traditional perovskite where the organic cations do not contribute to the conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM), the C–C ppπ∗ anti-bonding orbital and the 2p orbital of N in the pyridine ring of PDA and BDP contribute to the CBMs of the two perovskites. Interestingly, the NH of two pyridine rings in 4,4′-bipyridine (BPD) is similar to diamine, and the bound state provided by the C–C ppσ∗ orbital appears in the band gap of (BPD)PbI4, strongly affecting its optical properties. The results show that diamino pyridine and bipyridine effectively adjust the band structure of the organic-inorganic perovskite, and also affect the carrier transport and optical absorption characteristics. In particular, bipyridine perovskite displays better and more balanced electron and hole transport characteristics and greater optical absorption, which is helpful for the design and fabrication of more efficient and stable organic-inorganic perovskite photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Surface electrical properties is of great significance for developing high-performance organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite based electronic devices. The photovoltage-induced ions transport and redistribution at the surface region have been well studied, but their contributions to the surface electrical properties are still lack of experimental evidences. In this article, a self-powered polymer-based contact electrification probe (PCE-probe) is proposed to investigate the photovoltage- or applied bias-induced ion transport polarization (PI) and ferroelectric polarization (PF) inside the methylammonium lead iodide films (MAPI). Results show that both the PI- and PF-induced ion transport and redistribution create a similar local ion-doping region near the surface. Positive or negative ion-doping produces a n-type or p-type layer, which enhances the interficial junction inside MAPI-based solar cells and benefits the seperation and transfer of photogenerated carriers or excitons. The PI and PF effects can be added up or subtracted from each other depending on the polarization configuration. A qualitative relationship between the PCE-probe output and CE-effect, PI- and PF-induced transferred surface charges is investigated. These results can help to understand the polarization nature inside and the high power conversion efficiency of MAPI-based photovoltaic devices, and provide a feasible analysis method of PCE-probe for detecting surface electrical properties.

Abstract:One of the leading positions on the world's list of harmful substances is taken by cadmium, which is a heavy metal. Cadmium (Cd) gets into the human body through either respiratory tract (cigarette smoke) or alimentary canal. The aim of the study was to 1) determine whether the concentrations of cadmium in blood and urine of children from Katowice Murcki--one of the cleanest districts of the town - as well as its contents in the hair of the children exceeds acceptable values and 2) to analyse the effect of chosen environmental factors (exposition to smoke, parents' education) on the amount of cadmium in these materials. The study comprised 48 children at the age from 9-11 years from Katowice Murcki, attending the same primary school. The findings were statistically analysed using Shapiro-Wilk and Wilcoxon test. Concentration of cadmium in the blood was 0.479 microg/l, in urine 0.840 microg/g creatinine and the average concentration in the hair constituted 0.23 microg/g drymass. Concentration of cadmium in the blood of 13 children (30.95%) exceeded acceptable 0.5 microg/l value, while in 10 children (23.25%) value in the urine was exceeded. It was lug/g creatinine. Magnetic interactions based on proton orbital motion in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$

Abstract:The microscopic origin of the remarkable optoelectronic properties of one of the most studied contemporary materials remains unclear. Here, we identify the existence of magnetic interactions between intermolecular proton orbitals in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$. In particular, a unique sharp drop and a pronounced step-up discontinuity in the magnetic susceptibility at the tetragonal-to-cubic phase transitions are identified in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$, respectively. The magnetic interactions in the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases are dependent on thermal history and lattice orientation while nearly independent of the applied external magnetic field. In CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$, the CH$_3$ and NH$_3$$^+$ components reorient in an uncorrelated fashion resulting the cubic phase to also exhibit magnetic anisotropy. Our findings provide a potential link connecting the highly light-absorbing CH$_3$NH$_3$$^+$ and the exceptional properties of the charge carriers of the inorganic framework in hybrid perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The incorporation of chiral molecules (A) in materials based on hybrid ABX3 perovskites has opened new paths to tune the optoelectronic properties of perovskites through the transfer of chirality to the inorganic BX framework. However, our atomistic understanding of the role of chemical BX composition in the magnitude of the chirality transfer is far from complete. In this study, we use density functional theory calculations and the experimental Ruddlesden–Popper chiral (R-/S-NEA)2PbBr4 structure (R-/S-NEA = R-/S-1-(1-Naphthyl)ethylammonium) to investigate the effects induced by chemical substitution of Pb by Ge or Sn and Br by Cl or I on the transfer of chirality and physical-chemical properties. We have observed that different enantiomers result in opposing orientations of octahedral tiltings within the inorganic framework, thus transferring chirality to the inorganic structure. The tilts are greater in perovskites based on Pb and decrease in the sequence of Cl to Br to I, as a consequence of the decreased halide electronegativity that weakens the interactions between X and the – N+H3 group of the NEA chiral cation. The chirality transfer is also evident in the Rashba-Dresselhaus effects on the electronic band structure, in which we found magnitudes directly correlated to the trends of octahedra tilting. The band offsets of substitutions B and X are predominantly influenced by their natural atomic energy levels, while organic molecules play a pivotal role in modulating the ionic potential and electron affinity in systems containing light atoms. Band gap values range from 1.91 up to 3.77 eV, with chirality and anion electronegativity providing significant tuning effects on whether the band gaps are direct or indirect.

Abstract:Interfacial properties between perovskite layers and metal electrodes play a crucial role in the device performance and the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the interfacial degradation and ion migration at the interface between CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite layer and Ag electrode. Using in situ photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we found that the Ag electrode could induce the degradation of perovskite layers, leading to the formation of PbI2 and AgI species and the reduction of Pb2+ ions to metallic Pb species at the interface. The unconventional enhancement of the intensities of I 3d spectra provides direct experimental evidences for the migration of iodide ions from CH3NH3PbI3 subsurface to Ag electrode. Moreover, the contact of Ag electrode and perovskite layers induces an interfacial dipole of 0.3 eV at CH3NH3PbI3/Ag interfaces, which may further facilitate iodide ion diffusion, resulting in the decomposition of perovskite layers and the corrosion of Ag electrode.
