Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) exhibit an similar storage mechanism to lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Since lithium is costly and sodium is abundant on earth, SIBs have potential to replace LIBs in many applications, especially large-scale energy storage. Carbonaceous materials have special advantages for sodium ion storage, including low cost, high capacity and high conductiviy. However, the storage properties of carbonaceous materials are expected to be improved to meet the development of SIBs. Structure design and heteroatoms doping are two effective approaches to enhance the capacity and rate performance of carbonaceous materials for sodium storage. In this paper, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (NSHCSs) are synthesized through a facile pyrolysis process, using ionic liquid [EMIm]HSO 4 as the heteroatom source and phenolic resin as the carbon source. Owing to the hollow structure and element co-doping, the NSHCSs possess high surface area, abundant defects and enlarged interlayer spacing. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate the NSHCSs possess excellent sodium storage properties, with reversible capacities of 245.8, 229.6, 197.9, 169.7, 150.5, 123.0, and 86.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 10 A g −1 , respectively. The NSHCSs also display superior capacity retention, with a capacity of 124.7 mAh g −1 after 900 cycles at a high rate of 5 A g −1 .

Abstract:The development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is hindered by the rapid reduction in reversible capacity of carbon-based anode materials. Outside-in doping of carbon-based anodes has been extensively explored. Nickel and NiS2 particles embedded in nitrogen and sulfur codoped porous graphene can significantly improve the electrochemical performance. Herein a built-in heteroatom "self-doping" of albumen-derived graphene for sodium storage is reported. The built-in sulfur and nitrogen in albumen act as the doping source during the carbonization of proteins. The sulfur-rich proteins in albumen can also guide the doping and nucleation of nickel sulfide nanoparticles. Additionally, the porous architecture of the carbonized proteins is achieved through removable KCl/NaCl salts (medium) under high-temperature melting conditions. During the carbonization process, nitrogen can also reduce the carbonization temperature of thermally stable carbon materials. In this work, the NS-graphene delivered a specific capacity of 108.3 mAh g(-1) after 800 cycles under a constant current density of 500 mA g(-1). In contrast, the Ni/NiS2/NS-graphene maintained a specific capacity of 134.4 mAh g(-1); thus the presence of Ni/NiS2 particles improved the electrochemical performance of the whole composite.

Abstract:The alloy proportions of SbBix show obvious influence on sodium/potassium storage. Herein, SbBix nanoparticles embedded in ultra-thin carbon networks (SbBix@C, x = 1, 0.5, 0.15) are successfully synthesized by a facile salt template assisted pyrolysis method. The effect of different alloy proportions on the chemical and electrochemical properties of active materials is revealed. Density functional theory calculation demonstrates that SbBi0.5 has the smallest formation energy (-5.131 eV) and the smallest volume expansion rate for both sodium/potassium storage (222%/376%). Benefiting from the optimized volume expansion for both sodium/potassium storage and carbon networks structure, the optimized SbBi0.5@C anode shows high reversible capacities of 301 mAh/g and 390 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.1 A/g for sodium/potassium storage, respectively. It is also observed that the SbBi0.5@C anode delivers different behaviours of sodium/potassium storage, which is due to the various composition of SEI films formed after sodium/potassium storage. It is believed that this work provides a synthetic strategy for fabricating alloy-type anode materials for SIBs/PIBs, in view of structure design and the regulation of alloy proportion.
2D Sandwich-Like Nanosheets of Ultrafine Sb Nanoparticles Anchored to Graphene for High-Efficiency Sodium Storage

Abstract:Sb is considered a promising anode material for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) owing to its high theoretical specific capacity (660 mAh·g−1). However, Sb shows a very large volume change (∼200%) during sodiation and desodiation, leading to poor electrochemical performance. Here, we designed and tested a sandwich-like graphene-supported Sb nanocomposite (denoted Sb@RGO@Sb), in which ultrafine Sb nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface. The ultrafine Sb nanocrystals anchored on the RGO surface minimize the aggregation of Sb and inhibit restacking of the RGO sheets, leading to a minimum transport length for both ions and electrons. The graphene layer not only accommodates the large volume variation of Sb during cycling but also promotes the electron conductivity of the whole electrode. Owing to its unique structure, this sandwich-like composite exhibits superior sodium storage properties.

Abstract:Orthorhombic Nb2O5 (T-Nb2O5) has recently attracted great attention for its application as an anode for sodium ion batteries (NIBs) owing to its patulous framework and larger interplanar lattice spacing. Sulfur-doped T-Nb2O5 hollow nanospheres (diameter:180 nm) uniformly encapsulate into sulfur-doped graphene networks (denoted: S-Nb2O5 HNS@S-rGO) using hard template method. The 3D ordered porous structure not only provides good electronic transportation path but also offers outstanding ionic conductive channels, leading to an improved sodium storage performance. In addition, the introduction of sulfur to graphene and Nb2O5 leads to oxygen vacancy and enhanced electronic conductivity. The sodium storage performance of S-Nb2O5 HNS@S-rGO is unprecedented. It delivers a reversible capacity 215 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C over 100 cycles. In addition, it also possesses a great high-rate capability, retaining a stable capacity of 100 mAh g(-1) at 20 C after 3000 cycles. This design demonstrates the potential applications of Nb2O5 as anode for high performance NIBs.

Abstract:Heteroatom doping is regarded as a promising method to enhance the sodium storage performance of carbon materials. In this work, a sulfur-enriched N-doped multichannel hollow carbon nanofiber (denoted as S-NCNF) film is prepared through electrospinning technology and heat treatment with sublimed sulfur as the flexible anode for sodium ion batteries (NIBs). The S-NCNF film displays outstanding electrochemical performance, particularly with a high rate capacity (132 mA h g-1 at the current density of 10 A g-1 ) and remarkable long cycling stability (reversible specific capacity of 187 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1 over 2000 cycles). The improved sodium storage performance results from the unique 3D structure, abundant defects, and increased interlayer spacing of S-NCNFs. The density functional theory calculations demonstrate that nitrogenous carbon nanofibers doping with sulfur could not only promote the adsorption of sodium but also favor electrons' transfer. This strategy has been demonstrated as a general process to design free-standing carbon-based thin film with other heteroatom doping.

Abstract:SnS2 has been conceived as a promising candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs); however, the inferior intrinsic electrical conductivity, huge volume variation, and continuous pulverization upon cycling still hamper its practical application. To tackle these issues, a honeycomb-like hybrid architecture is delicately designed and constructed by encapsulating Cu-doped SnS2 nanosheet arrays in N-doped carbon coating (denoted as Cu-SnS2@NC). Benefitting from the synergistic effects of N-doped carbon coating and moderate Cu doping, the hybrid nanoarrays can effectively facilitate the ion/electron transfer ability, mitigate the mechanical stress, and improve the structural stability in the repeated Na+ insertion/extraction process. The optimal CuSnS2@NC nanoarrays display a remarkably high specific capacity of 1041.8 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and much improved rate performance and cycling durability. By coupling the pseudocapacitive behavior-dominated Cu-SnS2@NC anode with the Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathode, the full battery provides a high energy density of 232.4 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 239.6 W kg(-1). This work shall bring more insight into the ingenious design and fabrication of bimetallic sulfide arrays as advanced anodes for SIBs.

Abstract:Abstract Antimony‐based materials possess high specific capacity and appropriate redox potential for sodium storage, but they suffer from huge volume expansion/contraction when sodium ions insert/extract, which leads to inferior cycle life. Herein, a hierarchical nanodot‐in‐nanofiber structure is proposed to address this challenge, in which antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) nanocrystallites are confined by both 0D and 1D carbon layers. The multi‐pronged nanostructure reduces the size of active particles, alleviates the intrinsic volume change of Sb 2 Se 3 , and forms a stable transport network for charge carriers. Finally, the nanodot‐in‐nanofiber structured Sb 2 Se 3 anode exhibits outstanding performance for sodium storage, such as high capacity and exceptional cycle lifespan for over 10 000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Therefore, this work can be valuable for the rational design of ultra‐stable alloy and conversion‐type materials in the application of next‐generation batteries.

Abstract:Tin-based compounds are deemed as suitable anode candidates affording promising sodium-ion storages for rechargeable batteries and hybrid capacitors. However, synergistically tailoring the electrical conductivity and structural stability of tin-based anodes to attain durable sodium-ion storages remains challenging to date for its practical applications. Herein, metal-organic framework (MOF) derived SnSe/C wrapped within nitrogen-doped graphene (NG@SnSe/C) is designed targeting durable sodium-ion storage. NG@SnSe/C possesses favorable electrical conductivity and structure stability due to the "inner" carbon framework from the MOF thermal treatment and "outer" graphitic cage from the direct chemical vapor deposition synthesis. Consequently, NG@SnSe/C electrode can obtain a high reversible capacity of 650 mAh·g−1 at 0.05 A·g−1, a favorable rate performance of 287.8 mAh·g−1 at 5 A·g−1 and a superior cycle stability with a negligible capacity decay of 0.016% per cycle over 3,200 cycles at 0.4 A·g−1. Theoretical calculations reveal that the nitrogen-doping in graphene can stabilize the NG@SnSe/C structure and improve the electrical conductivity. The reversible Na-ion storage mechanism of SnSe is further investigated by in-situ X-ray diffraction/ex-situ transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, assembled sodium-ion hybrid capacitor full-cells comprising our NG@SnSe/C anode and an active carbon cathode harvest a high energy/power density of 115.5 Wh·kg−1/5,742 W·kg−1, holding promise for next-generation energy storages.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich material of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with cost-effectiveness and easy accessibility has been considered as one of the most promising anode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, the excessive presence of non-stable nitrogen sites in low crystallinity carbon nitrides would result in significant irreversibility, inadequate ion conductivity and structural instability, thereby limiting its practical application. Herein, a novel low-temperature strategy is proposed to stabilize the g-C3N4 by modulating the nitrogen configuration with single-atoms copper. The formed copper single atoms serving as anchors effectively regulate the coordination environment of nitrogen atoms in carbon nitride, thereby constructing stable nitrogen active sites for Na+ storage and conductive networks for rapid Na+ transport. Therefore, the Cu1.0/NC exhibits superior capacity (350.4 mAh g- 1 at 50 mA g- 1), exceptional rate performance (252.3 mAh g- 1 at 1000 mA g- 1), and long-cycle stability (capacity retention rate of 80.3 % after 1000 cycles at 5A g- 1). Furthermore, in-situ Raman, ex-situ XANES and XPS technologies jointly reveal that the Cu atoms significantly influence the charge transfer process of Na+ and change the storage mode of sodium through redox effects during the sodiation/desodiation process. This work proves that single-atom engineering is a novel and feasible strategy to optimize the high-performance electrode materials for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:While Sb-based materials are attracting much attention as promising lithium/sodium ion batteries anodes because of excellent theoretical specific capacity (660 mAh g-1), it is still challenging to achieve long cycling stability and excellent rate capability due to sluggish reaction kinetics and serious volume expansion during electrochemical process. Herein, to alleviate this issue, we design a novel nitrogen-enriched Sb@NCs composite through a facile and simple organic-inorganic coordination reaction, which could ensure metal ions and nitrogen element distributed on the carbon framework uniformly. In the lithium/sodium ion batteries matched with Sb@NCs composites with high nitrogen content (9.81 at.%) exhibit outstanding performances that a high-rate performance of 263.9 mAh g-1 at 25 A g-1 for lithium ion storage and a discharge capacity of 359.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 250 cycles for sodium ion storage. This facile and novel method may pave a way to prepare nitrogen-enriched materials to improve the ion storage and rate performances.
NiS2 Nanospheres Coated by Nitrogen-Doped Carbon for Enhanced Sodium Storage Performance

Abstract:Nickel disulfide is used as anode material for sodium-ion batteries, with low cost, abundant reserves, and a wide variety of theoretical specific capacities as high as 870 mAh g-1. However, large volume expansion and low ionic conductivity during Na+ intercalation and deintercalation lead to poor electrochemical perfor-mance. This work has synthesized carbon layer-coated and N-doped NiS2 nanospheres through PVP-assisted hydrothermal and subsequent annealing processes, reducing volume expansion and improving electrical conductivity and Na+ storage activity, increasing ion diffusion kinetics during electrochemical charge -dis-charge in excellent specific capacity and cycle stability. When evaluated as a negative electrode for Sodium -ion batteries (SIBs), it exhibits excellent specific capacity (554.3 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1, first-cycle coulombic efficiency of 92.3 %), and excellent long-cycle stability (436.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 for 800 cycles), demon-strating the potential of NiS2@NC as an ideal anode material for SIBs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:To develop high-performance sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), electrodes should possess well-defined pathways for efficient electronic/ionic transport. In this work, high-performance NIBs are demonstrated by designing a 3D interconnected porous structure that consists of N, S co-doped 3D porous graphene frameworks (3DPGFs-NS). The most typical electrode materials (i.e., Na3V2(PO4)(3) (NVP), MoS2, and TiO2) are anchored onto the 3DPGFs-NS matrix (denoted as NVP@C@3DPGFs-NS; MoS2@C@3DPGFs-NS and TiO2@C@3DPGFs-NS) to demonstrate its general process to boost the energy density of NIBs. The N, S co-doped porous graphene structure with a large surface area offers fast ionic transport within the electrode and facilitates efficient electron transport, and thus endows the 3DPGFs-NS-based composite electrodes with excellent sodium storage performance. The resulting NVP@C@3DPGFs-NS displays excellent electrochemical performance as both cathode and anode for NIBs. The MoS2@C@3DPGFs-NS and TiO2@C@3DPGFs-NS deliver capacities of 317 mAhg(-1) at 5 Ag-1 after 1000 cycles and 185 mAhg(-1) at 1 Ag-1 after 2000 cycles, respectively. The excellent long cycle life is attributed to the 3D porous structure that could greatly release mechanical stress from repeated Na+ extraction/insertion. The novel structure 3D PGFs-NS provides a general approach to modify electrodes of NIBs and holds great potential applications in other energy st(o)rage fields.

To address these dilemmas, a hybrid composite consisting of nickel sulfide nanoparticles uniformly anchored on the nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NiS@N-rGO) has been fabricated through a facile sulfidation of ultrathin Ni(OH)2/rGO precursor. Owing to the high electronic conductivity of composite, alleviated volume expansion and accelerated ion diffusion, the NiS@N-rGO composite exhibits an initial specific capacity as high as 872.8 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1 and maintain 300 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 after 300 cycles when employed as anode in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Abstract:A general process is developed to prepare binding nanosized cobalt chalcogenides in B,N-codoped graphene (CoSe2/BNG and CoS2/BNG). When used as anodes for sodium-ion batteries, the CoSe2/BNG and CoS2/BNG deliver excellent sodium-storage performance. The CoSe2/BNG displays a reversible capacity of 270 mAh g(-1) after 2000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g(-1). Even at 20 A g(-1), it can still give a capacity of 187 mAh g(-1). Moreover, the CoS2/BNG shows 387 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1), demonstrating its superior high rate performance. The enhanced sodium-storage properties of the CoSe2/BNG and CoS2/BNG nanocomposites may be attributed to the high conductive graphene network, enhanced sodium storage of B,N-codoping in graphene, and the small CoSe2 and CoS2 nanocrystallites that shorten the electronic and ionic diffusion length throughout the electrode.
