Abstract:Transition metal disulfides have been widely used in lithium/sodium ion batteries as cathode materials. However, the huge structural changes in electrochemical processes remain a challenge. Here, 3DG-MoS(2)hybrid nanomaterials with particular sandwich architecture were synthesized successfully by a simple evaporation and hydrothermal reaction method. This process enlarged the spacing between the graphene layers, increased the surface area, promoted electron and lithium/sodium ions diffusion, and alleviated structural deformations during ion insertion, which altogether improved the performance of lithium/sodium storage. Therefore, 3DG-MoS(2)composite nanomaterials exhibited excellent cyclic stability electrochemical performance (955 mAhg(-1)at 1 Ag(-1)after 500 cycle for LIBs; 479 mA hg(-1)at 1 Ag(-1)after 300 cycle for SIBs). When the current density gradually reduced to 100 mAg(-1), it still delivered excellent lithium/sodium storage capacity ability (1130 mAhg(-1)for lithium storage; 663 mAhg(-1)for sodium storage) even at 10 cycles of 2 Ag(-1)deep charge and discharge.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMS) hold great promise as anode materials for Li + /Na + storage. However, their practical application still faces several challenges, such as inadequate electrical conductivity, substantial volume changes and a propensity for agglomeration. To tackle these challenges, a 3D composite structure composed of graphene nanosheets crosslinked core−shell FeS 2 @N, S co−doped porous carbon (FeS 2 @NSC/GNs) is created by combining self−template polymerization with the graphene encapsulation technique. Systematic characterization and analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the self−template polymerization strategy in generating a porous core−shell structure, which facilitates the uniform dispersion and optimal contact of the FeS 2 core within the carbon shell. Concurrently, the integration of graphene, alongside the porous carbon shell, introduces a sophisticated dual−protection mechanism against volume expansion and undesirable FeS 2 aggregation. Furthermore, the resulting 3D architecture enables efficient electron/ion transport and provides abundant sites for Li + /Na + storage. Leveraging these inherent benefits, the FeS 2 @NSC/GNs composite exhibits significantly improved lithium/sodium storage performance in comparison to the counterparts. Evidently, our proposed approach offers valuable guidance for the construction of advanced anodes for lithium/sodium−ion batteries.

2D Sandwich-Like Nanosheets of Ultrafine Sb Nanoparticles Anchored to Graphene for High-Efficiency Sodium Storage

Abstract:Sb is considered a promising anode material for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) owing to its high theoretical specific capacity (660 mAh·g−1). However, Sb shows a very large volume change (∼200%) during sodiation and desodiation, leading to poor electrochemical performance. Here, we designed and tested a sandwich-like graphene-supported Sb nanocomposite (denoted Sb@RGO@Sb), in which ultrafine Sb nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface. The ultrafine Sb nanocrystals anchored on the RGO surface minimize the aggregation of Sb and inhibit restacking of the RGO sheets, leading to a minimum transport length for both ions and electrons. The graphene layer not only accommodates the large volume variation of Sb during cycling but also promotes the electron conductivity of the whole electrode. Owing to its unique structure, this sandwich-like composite exhibits superior sodium storage properties.
A general synthesis of transition metal sulfide and nitrogen/sulfur co-doped three-dimensional graphene composite for high performance sodium storage

Abstract:The composite of carbon materials and transition metal sulfides can significantly improve the poor cycling performance of transition metal sulfides in sodium storage. In this study, the nitrogen/sulfur co-doped three-dimensional graphene (NSGN) encapsulating transition metal sulfides (FeS, Co9S8 and Ni3S2) are designed in a general method to improve the poor cycling stability of transition metal sulfides. The desired anode materials all show an excellent cyclic stability with the capacity retention of 63%, 97% and 98% after 100 cycles in sodium-ion batteries for , Co9S8@NSGN and Ni3S2@NSGN electrodes, respectively. Consequently, this work can provide a new insight for in-situ synthesis of metal sulfides and graphene composites to improve the performance of sodium storage.

Abstract:Owing to the high specific capacities, high electrochemical activity, and various electronic properties, transition metal selenides are considered as promising anodes for lithium- and sodium-ion storage. However, poor electronic conductivity and huge volume expansion during cycling are still responsible for their restricted electrochemical performance. Herein, CoSe hollow polyhedron anchoring onto graphene (CoSe/G) is synthesized by self-assembly and subsequent selenization. In CoSe/G composites, the CoSe nanoparticles, obtained by in situ selenization of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in high temperature, are distributed among graphene sheets, realizing N element doping, developing robust heterostructures with a chemical bond. The unique architecture ensures the cohesion of the structure and endorses the reaction kinetics for metal ions, identified by in situ and ex situ testing techniques, and kinetics analysis. Thus, the CoSe/G anodes achieve excellent cycling performance (1259 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 300 cycles for lithium storage; 214 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 after 600 cycles for sodium storage) and rate capability (732 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 for lithium storage; 290 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 for sodium storage). The improved electrochemical performance for alkali-ion storage provides new insights for the construction of MOFs derivatives toward high-performance storage devices.

General Synthesis of Dual Carbon‐Confined Metal Sulfides Quantum Dots Toward High‐Performance Anodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sponge‐like composites assembled by cobalt sulfides quantum dots (Co9S8 QD), mesoporous hollow carbon polyhedral (HCP) matrix, and a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wrapping sheets are synthesized by a simultaneous thermal reduction, carbonization, and sulfidation of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks@GO precursors. Specifically, Co9S8 QD with size less than 4 nm are homogenously embedded within HCP matrix, which is encapsulated in macroporous rGO, thereby leading to the double carbon‐confined hierarchical composites with strong coupling effect. Experimental data combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the presence of coupled rGO not only prevents the aggregation and excessive growth of particles, but also expands the lattice parameters of Co9S8 crystals, enhancing the reactivity for sodium storage. Benefiting from the hierarchical porosity, conductive network, structural integrity, and a synergistic effect of the components, the sponge‐like composites used as binder‐free anodes manifest outstanding sodium‐storage performance in terms of excellent stable capacity (628 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 300 mA g−1) and exceptional rate capability (529, 448, and 330 mAh g−1 at 1600, 3200, and 6400 mA g−1). More importantly, the synthetic method is very versatile and can be easily extended to fabricate other transition‐metal‐sulfides‐based sponge‐like composites with excellent electrochemical performances.

Abstract:Abstract Antimony‐based materials possess high specific capacity and appropriate redox potential for sodium storage, but they suffer from huge volume expansion/contraction when sodium ions insert/extract, which leads to inferior cycle life. Herein, a hierarchical nanodot‐in‐nanofiber structure is proposed to address this challenge, in which antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) nanocrystallites are confined by both 0D and 1D carbon layers. The multi‐pronged nanostructure reduces the size of active particles, alleviates the intrinsic volume change of Sb 2 Se 3 , and forms a stable transport network for charge carriers. Finally, the nanodot‐in‐nanofiber structured Sb 2 Se 3 anode exhibits outstanding performance for sodium storage, such as high capacity and exceptional cycle lifespan for over 10 000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 . Therefore, this work can be valuable for the rational design of ultra‐stable alloy and conversion‐type materials in the application of next‐generation batteries.

Abstract:Carbon materials have broad application prospects as an anode material in the field of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Optimizing the structure of carbon materials has a significant effect in obtaining high electrochemical performance. Herein, carbon/carbon composite nanofibers (C/CNFs) were fabricated by electrospinning and their microstructure, texture, and surface functional groups are adjusted through introducing nanocarbons. The results show the introduction of graphene will regulate pore structures and surface functional groups, exhibiting excellent sodium storage performance as SIBs anodes. The graphene/carbon composite nanofibers (G/CNFs) showed a good reversible capacity of 253.6 mA h g−1 at 0.05 A g−1 after 300 cycles, which is enhanced by 62.67% comparing to the CNFs. The G/CNFs also retained a capacity of 200.6 mA h g−1 at 2 A g−1 after 600 cycles The pseudo-capacitive contribution was 90.4% at 1.0 mV s−1 for the G/CNFs. Regulating pore structure of carbon materials by other nanocarbons provided new reference for the application of energy storage but not limited to this.

Constructing Rich Interfacial Structure by Carbon Dots to Improve the Sodium Storage Capacity of Sb/C Composite

Abstract:By utilizing the liquid nitrogen freeze‐drying process and incorporating nitrogen/sulfur co‐doped carbon dots, self‐encapsulated Sb nanodots are achieved within a carbon matrix. These nanodots enhance Sb/C interfaces, providing abundant Na+ adsorption sites and exhibiting a remarkable "sloping capacity". This synergistic effect results in an excellent electrochemical performance while maintaining a favorable balance with high initial Coulombic efficiency. Designing Sb/carbon composite is an effective strategy to enhance the cycle stability and rate capability of Sb anodes for sodium ion batteries. However, the introduction of carbon often leads to a loss in specific capacity and initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). In this work, a new perspective is adopted by focusing on improving the "sloping capacity" contribution of carbon (C) in Sb/C composites, rather than solely increasing the platform capacity of Sb as traditionally done. Theoretical predictions indicate that constructing Sb/C composites with high Sb and carbon interfacial areas can provide more Na adsorption sites, thus enhancing the "sloping capacity" of amorphous carbon. Guided by DFT, a rational Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) is successfully developed by self‐embedding Sb nanodots into 2D‐amorphous carbon sheets doped with N/S. Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) exhibits abundant Sb/carbon interfacial areas and excellent nanoscale effects, demonstrating ideal electrochemical sodium storage performances. Impressively, the Sb/C/NSCDs‐2(N) provides a "sloping capacity" close to 160 mAh g−1. Significantly, owing to the fact that these interfaces and defects are not in direct contact with the electrolyte, the side reaction of electrolyte is effectively inhibited, leading to no decrease of ICE.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency multi-component composite anode nanomaterials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is critical for advancing the further practical application. Numerous multi-component nanomaterials are constructed typically via confinement strategies of surface templating or three-dimensional encapsulation. Herein, a composite of heterostructural multiple sulfides (MoS2/SnS/CoS) well-dispersed on graphene is prepared as an anode nanomaterial for SIBs, via a distinctive lattice confinement effect of a ternary CoMoSn-layered double-hydroxide (CoMoSn-LDH) precursor. Electrochemical testing demonstrates that the composite delivers a high-reversible capacity (627.6 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g−1) and high rate capacity of 304.9 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 5.0 A g−1, outperforming those of the counterparts of single-, bi- and mixed sulfides. Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated experimentally by the dominant capacitive contribution and low charge-transfer resistance. The precursor-based lattice confinement strategy could be effective for constructing uniform composites as anode nanomaterials for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Although the room-temperature rechargeable sodium-ion battery has emerged as an attractive alternative energy storage solution for large-scale deployment, major challenges toward practical sodium-ion battery technology remain including identification and engineering of anode materials that are both technologically feasible and economical. Herein, an antimony-based anode is developed by incorporating antimony into graphitic carbon matrices using low-cost materials and scalable processes. The composite anode exhibits excellent overall performance in terms of packing density, fast charge/discharge capability and cyclability, which is enabled by the conductive and compact graphitic network. A full cell design featuring this composite anode with a hexacyanometallate cathode achieves superior power output and low polarization, which offers the potential for realizing a high-performance, cost-effective sodium-ion battery.
Wafer-biscuits-like few-graphene-layers carbon with N, P, S triple-doping for efficient and stable sodium-ion storage

Abstract:Carbon-based materials are one of the most attractive anodes for sodium-ion batteries because of their wide availability, facile synthesis, and low cost. However, rational designing carbon-based architecture towards upgrading the electrochemical performance of anodes for sodium storage has been a great challenge. Herein, we prepared N, P, S triple-doped few-graphene-layers carbon with expanded interlayer spacing via a scalable template approach. The few-graphene-layers carbon negatively replicates the structure of the layered template to generate a wafer-biscuit-like architecture, which prevents the restack of carbon nanosheets. The interlayer spacing and heteroatom contents of wafer-biscuit-like carbon architecture can be modulated by varying carbonization temperatures. Consequently, the optimum carbon anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 329 mAh g −1 , good rate capability, and long-term stability of 300 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Furthermore, the sodium storage mechanism of wafer-biscuit-like carbon anodes has been systematically explored.

Abstract:Quinone molecules hold the promise as electrodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Made of earth abundant elements, these organic materials offer rapid multi-electron redox reaction at high theoretical specific capacities. However, they often display poor cycle life and low rate of performance due to a low electrical conductivity and a high solubility in an organic electrolyte. In this work, we report a 1,5-dihydroxy anthraquinone sodium salt (DHAQNa) synthesized by using simple neutralization and its composite with graphene (DHAQNa/G) prepared through a simple ball-milling and dispersed-deposition process. Compared with DHAQNa, DHAQNa/G exhibit higher capacity (176 mAh g−1 vs. 159 mAh g−1) and better cycling performance (~151 mAh g−1 vs ~90 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 0.1C), which are attributed to the suppressed dissolution and the enhanced electrical conductivity owing to the formation of oxygen‑sodium bonds and the introduction of graphene, respectively. Also, the excellent electrical conductivity of DHAQNa/G is confirmed by density of states calculations. The strategy demonstrated here should be widely applicable to other organic electrode materials.

Electrochemically Engineering Antimony Interspersed on Graphene Toward Advanced Sodium-Storage Anodes.

Abstract:Nanoengineering of metal anode materials shows great potential for energy storage with high capacity. Zero-dimensional nanoparticles are conducive to acquire remarkable electrochemical properties in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their enlarged surface active sites. However, it is still difficult to fulfill the requirements of practical applications in batteries owing to the deficiency of efficient and scalable preparation approaches of high-performance metal electrode materials. Herein, an electrochemical cathodic corrosion method is proposed for the tunable preparation of nanostructured antimony (Sb) by the introduction of a surfactant, which can efficiently avoid the agglomeration of Sb atom clusters generated from the Zintl compound and further stacking into bulk during the electrochemical process. Subsequently, graphene as the support and conductive matrix is uniformly interspersed by generating Sb nanoparticles (Sb/Gr). Moreover, the reversible crystalline-phase evolution of Sb reversible arrow NaSb reversible arrow Na3Sb for Sb/Gr was studied by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Benefiting from the interconnection of the conductive network, Sb/Gr anodes deliver a high capacity of 635.34 mAh g(-1), a retained capacity of 507.2 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at 0.1 C (1 C = 660 mAhg(-1)) and excellent rate performance with the capacities of 473.41 and 405.09 mAh g(-1) at 2 and 5 C, respectively. The superior cycle stability with a capacity of 346.26 mAh g(-1) is achieved after 500 cycles at 2 C. This electrochemical approach offers a new route toward developing metal anodes with designed nanostructures for high-performance SIBs.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) with high theoretical sodium storage capacity have been regarded as one of the most competitive and promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, great challenges still exist for TMS to achieve long-cycle life owing to the poor conductivity and volume expansion during the sodiation/desodiation process. The conventionally used pure carbon coating method can effectively solve the above problems. However, the low sodium ion storage capability of carbon will decrease the capacity of the anode. Thus the functionalization of well-designed carbon nanostructures with exotic elements (e.g., sulfur) or high-specific-capacity materials has been regarded as an efficient route to enhance sodium storage performance. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to incorporate covalent sulfur and CoS 2 nanoparticles into honeycomb-like carbon matrices (denoted as S/CoS 2 @C), where sulfur is vaporized under vacuum and reacted with the Co-decorated carbon hierarchies, leading to the formation of CoS 2 nanoparticles as well as the covalent C–S x –C bonds. Consequently, the as-prepared S/CoS 2 @C composite demonstrates excellent sodium storage performance, with high initial coulomb efficiency (ICE) of 83 % and capacity retention of 95 % (478.5 mAh g −1 ) after 700 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 , and an outstanding high-rate long-term cycling stability with a high reversible capacity of 396.1 mAh g −1 after 5000 cycles at 2 A g −1 (an average decay rate of only 0.0014 %). Furthermore, electrochemical analyses reveal that both covalent sulfur and CoS 2 contribute to the sodium storage capacity via a predominantly surface-induced capacitive process, and the well-designed S/CoS 2 @C composite with encapsulation of covalent sulfur and CoS 2 into the highly interconnected porous carbon matrices efficiently buffer the volume changes and well maintain the electrode integrity/conductivity upon sodiation/desodiation cycling.

Abstract:A carbon-supported hollow WS 2 composite structure was constructed in one step by a self-templating method. The composite structure exhibits improved structural stability and enhanced sodium storage.

Abstract:Antimony oxides hold great competitive edges for lithium/sodium-ion storage on account of their large theoretical capacities. Composing antimony oxides particles with conductive supporters can greatly improve electrochemical performance, but still suffer from their weak interactions, causing unsatisfactory rate capability and cycling stability. Herein, we demonstrate that the interactions between Sb2O5 particles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets were enhanced by a facile Co2+-induced deposition strategy, which is helpful in boosting electrons/ions migration and maintaining structural integrity of the electrodes. The physical and electrochemical measurements results reveal that, the presence of Co2+ ions effectively boost the uniformly anchoring Sb2O5 nanoparticles on rGO sheets with the priority in-situ formed CoSb2O6 as nucleation sites, which greatly strengthens the interaction effects between active oxides and conductive rGO. Accordingly, the Co-Sb2O5/rGO anode delivers a large reversible lithium-storage capacity of 1027 mAh g-1, high-rate capacity of 507.3 mAh g-1 even at 3.0 A g-1 and excellent durability (75.4% retention after 500 cycles at 0.5 A g-1), surpassing most of the reported antimony oxides anodes. Our work shows an efficient strategy to construct ultrafine oxides on oxygenic carbonaceous materials with strengthened structure for high-performance energy storage.

Abstract:Theoretical calculations and in situ X‐ray diffractometry technique are employed to investigate the synergistic intercalation‐conversion storage behavior of Sb2S3 and FeS2. The significantly enhanced sodium storage capacity is attributed to the unique structure and the heterogeneous interface. It illustrates that combining rGO with heterogeneous engineering can provide an ideal strategy for the synthesis of new hetero‐structured anode materials with outstanding battery performance for sodium‐ion batteries. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are a promising substitute for lithium batteries due to their abundant resources and low cost. Metal sulfides are regarded as highly attractive anode materials due to their superior mechanical stability and high theoretical specific capacity. Guided by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, 3D porous network shaped Sb2S3/FeS2 composite materials with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) through a simple solvothermal and calcination method, which is predicted to facilitate favorable Na+ ion diffusion, is synthesized. Benefiting from the well‐designed structure, the resulting Sb2S3/FeS2 exhibit a remarkable reversible capacity of 536 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1 and long high‐rate cycle life of 3000 cycles at a current density of 30 A g−1 as SIBs anode. In situ and ex situ analyses are carried out to gain further insights into the storage mechanisms and processes of sodium ions in Sb2S3/FeS2@rGO composites. The significantly enhanced sodium storage capacity is attributed to the unique structure and the heterogeneous interface between Sb2S3 and FeS2. This study illustrates that combining rGO with heterogeneous engineering can provide an ideal strategy for the synthesis of new hetero‐structured anode materials with outstanding battery performance for SIBs.

Abstract:Here, an effective approach to obtain controllable thin carbon layer encapsulated MoS2 nanospheres on the surface of interwoven carbon nanotubes to form interconnected network structure of C-MoS2/CNTs composites is presented by a facile hydrothermal method. The remarkable electrochemical performance of the resulting composites as anode electrode materials are achieved for Na-ion energy storage systems, such as excellent capacity (~468 mA h g−1 at 1.0 A g−1), high rate capability (capacity retention of ~72.8% from 0.1 A g−1 to 5.0 A g−1) and long cycling stability (100.0% capacity remaining after 1000 cycles). Systematic characterizations reveal that the outstanding performance is mainly attributed to the unique and robust composite architecture, such as, improvement the conductivity of the whole electrode material, preventing the aggregation of C-MoS2 during cycles, large atomic interface contact for Na+ storage, and providing a dense porous space to alleviate volume expansion during cycling.

Abstract:Hybrid hierarchical micro/nanostructures possess great potential in engineering of advanced electrode materials for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, a sandwich hierarchical architecture composed of ZnSe nanoparticles fastened in N‐doped carbon polyhedra anchoring onto graphene with the modification of MoSe2 nanosheets (ZnSe⊂N‐C@MoSe2/rGO) is synthesized by a self‐template and subsequent selenization strategy. Due to the distinctive architectural and multicompositional features, these hybrids deliver a high reversible capacity of 319.4 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 for 1800 cycles, 206.5 mA h g−1 at 6 A g−1 for 2800 cycles, and 177.7 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1 for 5000 cycles, as well as a better rate capability up to 10 A g−1 with a reversible capacity of 224.4 mAh g−1 as an anode material for SIBs. By comparing the capacity contribution, electrochemical impedance spectra and DNa+ of different materials, the advantages of ZnSe⊂N‐C@MoSe2/rGO are confirmed. The sodium storage mechanism of hybrids is further revealed by in situ X‐ray diffraction patterns and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy results. The improved sodium storage properties of hybrids manifest the significance of elaborate construction of novel multicomponent hierarchical architectures with higher complexity.
