Abstract:A photoresponsive ternary host-guest molecular recognition motif between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]), the 1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyridinium dication (DMV2+) and an azobenzene derivative (trans-2) in water was applied in this paper to construct a cross-linked supramolecular polymer. Various characterization methods were adopted to prove the formation of the polymer, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, specific viscosity measurements, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Additionally, the tetraphenylethylene moiety was incorporated into this system and the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the supramolecular polymer were also investigated.

Abstract:The binding behavior of cucurbit[8]uril(Q[8]) and p -hydroxybenzoic acid(p-HBA) has been investigated using 1 H NMR titration experiments, UV-Vis absorption, isothermal titration calorimetry(ITC), and X-ray crystallography. Results revealed that the Q[8] can accommodate two p -HBA molecules to form a 1:2 host-guest inclusion complex in solution, namely ( p -HBA) 2 @Q[8]. From a poorly scattering crystal, we were able to identify two symmetry unique Q[8] rings, but with different p -HBA fillings. The structure can be represented as Q[8]+1.5 p -HBA, which gives Q[8]@(p-HBA) 2 ·Q[8]@ p -HBA as the structural formula. This supramolecular structure was screened for its ability to capture iodine. The experimental results showed that the adsorption efficiency of the supramolecular organic framework material for iodine capture was 43.8%, with an equilibrium adsorption capacity of 223.3 mg/g.

Abstract:Cucurbit[10]uril (CB[10]) is found to form stable host-guest complexes with tetracationic cyclophanes in H 2 O and DMSO. Upon encapsulation in CB[10], the affinity of cyclophanes towards anions is weakened, due to electronegative carbonyl oxygens on CB[10] providing charge repulsion environment, and encapsulation fixing the conformation of cyclophanes. Interestingly, these complexes show positively cooperative effects towards neutral phenol guests to form heteroternary complexes. The driving force for the formation of heteroternary inclusion complexes is multiple hydrogen bonding interactions confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis, as well as hydrophobic effects. Abstract:The cucurbit [n] urils (CB [n] s) constitute a family of water‐soluble macrocyclic hosts, which have a hydrophobic cavity capable of binding one or two guest molecules (Figure 6.1)[1–3]. Three points contribute to the binding between CB [n] host and guest molecules [4–6]:(i) attraction between the host and guest;(ii) desolvation of the host cavity; and (iii) desolvation of the guest. In particular, the desolvation of the CB [n] host cavity releases high‐energy water trapped in the cavity which is regarded as a non‐-classical hydrophobic effect as it has a favorable enthalpic signature. On account of their high affinities, CB [n]‐mediated host–guest interactions are of great interest in fabricating supramolecular systems with well‐defined composition and structure [7–11]. Among the cucurbit [n] uril familiy, cucurbit [8] uril (CB [8]) is a characteristic host which is capable of multiple binding with two guests (Figure 6.2). Based on whether binding different or the same guests, their complexation can be divided into heteroternary and homoternary complexations, respectively. CB [8]‐mediated heteroternary and homoternary complexes have been exploited in the construction of supramolecular polymers [12–15], supramolecular hydrogels [16, 17], supra‐amphiphiles [18–20] and other supramolecular functional self‐assembled systems [21, 22].

Abstract:It has been demonstrated that the complexation of the divalent salts of paraquat can be greatly improved (a K-a increase up to 2 19 times was observed) by the introduction of ion-pair recognition through use of urea moieties on the crown ether. This improvement is controlled by not only the solvent polarity but also the nature of the anion. Furthermore, it was found that the binding motif for paraquat guest incorporation into the heteroditopic host is anion-controlled in the solid state. The host-guest complex is a pseudorotaxane in the solid state when the two counterions of paraquat are trifluoroacetate anions while it is a taco complex when the two counterions are hexafluorophosphate or chloride anions.

Abstract:Three diastereomeric bis-phosphonate cavitands based on an aryl extended calix[4]pyrrole can act as ion-pair receptors for alkylammonium/phosphonium chloride salts. In this contribution, the ion-pair binding mode and binding affinity were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and new nonconvalent weak interaction analysis method. One of the three receptors was chosen as the host and two guests were chosen to model quaternary phosphonium chloride salts and primary ammonium chloride salts respectively, and two types of arrangements - separated and contact - were taken into account for each guest. The binding energy suggests that contact arrangement is the favorable binding mode for this receptor and it prefers to bind primary ammonium chloride salts rather than quaternary phosphonium chloride salts both in the gas-phase and in solution, in agreement with the experiment. Moreover, geometry analysis and charge transfer based on natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis suggest that the binding modes and binding affinities of the receptor towards different ion-pairs are determined by the amount and strength of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, nonconvalent weak interactions between the host and the guests have been explored to unravel the driving forces responsible for the ion-pair recognition. There are hydrogen bonding, van der Waals, cation-pi, ion-induced dipole and charge-charge interactions in ion-pair recognition, and hydrogen bonding interactions play the dominant role in this process. This work unveils the mechanism of ion-pair recognition by new calix[4]pyrrole bisphosphonate receptors, while opening exciting perspectives for the design of novel calix[4]pyrrole-based ion-pair receptors.

Abstract:A novel orthogonal supramolecular polymer (Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu3+) in a host-guest ratio of 2:1 was successfully constructed utilizing the specificity and excellent cavity matching of Q[10] with the tripyridine derivatives (TPDPB). Significantly, non-covalent interactions between Q[10]'s hydrophobic cavities and Lu3+ were used to induce charge transfer of TPDPB to TPDPB and TPDPB to Lu3+, resulting in the construction of structurally interesting orthogonal assemblies with excellent fluorescence properties. Finally, the Q[10]-TPDPB-Lu3+ assemblies were shown to have good recognition and classification of strong and weak acid anions as well as iodide anions, and the classification was accompanied by a clear fluorescence emission change allowing visual observation.

Abstract:In recent years, most of the constructions on cucurbit[n]uril-based supramolecular polymers have been based on host–guest chemistry, however, this limits the choice of host and guest. Herein, we present a newly designed supramolecular polymer, namely Q[8]@PEG-HPTS formed by utilizing outer surface Q[8] interactions. In aqueous solution, the supramolecular polymer Q[8]@PEG-HPTS was obtained quickly and simply by mixing Q[8] with PEG-HPTS, where after, a variety of characterization techniques were employed to confirm the structure of the Q[8]@PEG-HPTS. The ability of this system to selectively recognize metal ions as well as pesticide molecules was also investigated; selectivity was observed for Fe3+ and paraquat. The biocompatibility and excellent fluorescence properties associated with the constituents of the supramolecular polymer allowed for the imaging of HeLa cells. This system could image and trace the nucleus through the cytoplasm, indicating that it could enter and internalize HeLa cells. Finally, by continuously adjusting the ratio between Q[8] and PEG-HPTS, a Q[8]@PEG-HPTS hydrogel was obtained. This hydrogel exhibited a stimulated temperature response, and opens up further possibilities for exploring the applications of such supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:The interactions between a host, water-soluble corona[n]-arene (S6-CAP), and a series of guests, bisquaternary ammonium derivatives (CnDAs), in water, were investigated. The host and guest can form 1:1 host-guest complex. Their binding constants decrease as the alkyl length of CnDAs increases, which can be tunable ranging from 103 to 106 M-1. The binding processes are mainly entropy-driven, while the enthalpy changes also play an important role in enhancing the host-guest interactions. In addition, a supra-amphiphile was fabricated with S6-CAP and a normal surfactant bearing bisquatemary. ammonium (C4R). The S6-CAP.C4R complex forms micellar aggregates in water, and the system possesses better assembling activity and dilution stability than its building block C4R. This study enriches the families of supra-amphiphiles with a new architecture, and employing such a supra-amphiphile in biofunctional materials is highly anticipated.

Abstract:By linking BMP32C10 and DB24C8 motifs together, a four-armed cryptand 1 is synthesized successfully, in which BMP32C10 motif can bind paraquat 2 while DB24C8 motif can complex dibenzylammonium salt 3 in spite of the electrostatic repulsion between guests 2 and 3. The base/acid-responsive supramolecular polymer is constructed further via two kinds of host-guest interactions between cryptand 1 and two homoditopic paraquat 4 and dibenzylammonium salt 5 similar to guests 2 and 3.

Abstract:A novel cucurbit[6]uril-based (Q[6]) supramolecular assembly {(NH4)2·Q[6]·(HDTNB)2·2H2O} (1) with a three-dimensional (3D) framework structure was successfully constructed via outer-surface interactions between Q[6] and a flexible aromatic compound, 5,5'-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (H2DTNB), as a structure-directing agent. It is interesting to find that assembly 1 can selectively capture Ba(ii) cations among the common alkaline-earth metal ions of Mg(ii), Ca(ii), Sr(ii) and Ba(ii), resulting in the formation of an isomorphic 3D assembly {Ba(H2O)2Q[6]}·(HDTNB)2 (2). Furthermore, both assemblies 1 and 2 exhibit the selective sensing of Fe(iii) ions through fluorescence quenching, which has rarely been reported for Q[n]-based supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract:In the present work, we have investigated the effect of pH and mercury ions on the host-guest complex formed between cucurbit[7]uril (Q[7]) and Hoechst 33342 (H33342). H-1 NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that acid/base stimulation could change the binding stoichiometry between Q [7] and H33342. The results suggest that two complexation equilibria (1:1 and 2:1) may exist between H33342 and Q[7] at pH 2.0 and 4.5, respectively. However, a 1:1 host-guest complex was formed between H33342 and Q[7] at pH 7.0 and 10.0. Q[7] shows differential affinities for the protonated and neutral forms of H33342 dye. Moreover, the switching between H33342 center dot 2H(+)@2Q[7](1:2) at pH 4.5 and H33342 center dot H+@Q[7](1:1) at pH 7.0 was reversible. Furthermore, as a metal stimulus, Hg2+ ions could push (i) Q[7] from the piperazine ring to the benzimidazole position with a 1:1 guest-host ratio and (ii) a second Q[7] onto the ethyl position with a 1:2 guest-host stoichiometry. Abstract:The design of positively charged ultrathin films for surface modification is of crucial importance for biomedical applications. Herein, we report the layer-by-layer assembly of pure positively charged ultrathin films based on the host-guest interaction of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Two positively charged poly(ethylenimine)s (PEI) functionalized with guest moieties methyl viologen (MV) and indole (ID) were alternately assembled with the formation of CB[8] ternary complex under basic conditions. The growth of the (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films was monitored by spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance. The morphology and structure of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. These positively charged (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films were very stable in the pH range from 4 to 9 but disassembled immediately when subjected to a competitive guest adamantylamine. Finally, the films were successfully employed as nanocontainers for DNA loading and subsequent directing the transfection of the adhered cells.
