Abstract:In this study, with the assistance of quaternary ammonium salts we have successfully prepared a new family of salicylate-stabilized heterobimetallic Pb–Ti–oxo clusters, including H(TEA)[Pb2Ti6(μ2-O)2(μ3-O)2(OiPr)4(PA)2(Sal)6(NO3)2] (PTC-321; TEA = tetraethylammonium; HOiPr = isopropanol; H2PA = phenylphosphonic acid; H2Sal = salicylic acid), {PbTi3(μ2-O)(μ3-O)(OiPr)2(PA)(Sal)3(DMF)·CH3CN}n (PTC-322; DMF = dimethylformamide), {PbTi5(μ3-O)6(Sal)3(CH3COO)2(DMF)(OiPr)2}n (PTC-323), [Pb2Ti4(Sal)6(EtO)2(OiPr)6(HOiPr)2]·CH3NH2 (PTC-324; EtOH = CH3CH2OH), H[Pb4Ti9(μ2-O)2(μ3-O)(μ4-O)6(Sal)7(OiPr)13] (PTC-325), and Pb2Ti12(μ2-O)3(μ3-O)3(μ4-O)4(Sal)4(OEt)24 (PTC-326). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies demonstrate that the {Ti3Pb(Sal)3} unit acts as the building block to constitute the diverse assembly of PTC-321–PTC-323. Thereinto, the clusters in PTC-322 and PTC-323 are connected into infinite one-dimensional chains. Furthermore, the solvent effects have facilitated the heterobimetallic Pb–Ti–oxo clusters into various configurations in PTC-323–PTC-326. Abstract:Fluorination on conjugated components is one of popular strategies to modify organic optoelectronic materials. Following the research of a benzodithiophene/benzothiadiazole ADA-type optoelectronic molecule, two benzothiadiazole (BT) units were fluorinated with different numbers and positions, and the change in basic properties and performances for field-effect transistors and manic solar cells was investigated. It was found that when the F-substitution number increases, the molecule enhances thermal stability, decreases solubility, lowers HOMO and LUMO energy levels, but almost does not alter light absorption range. Furthermore, investigations on organic field-effect transistors found the molecular hole mobility reduces with only one F-substituent at outer position of BT units, while increases up to 0.27 cm(2).V-1.s(-1 )with two F substituents on BT units. However, when these materials are applied in organic solar cells, the fluorinated ones enhance open-circuit voltage, but deteriorate active layer morphology, finally leading to decrease in short-circuit current and device efficiency.

Abstract:We have synthesized a series of salicylaldimine difluoroboron complexes that contain carbazole moieties. Substituents on the carbazole and on the benzene rings of the salicylaldimine moiety influenced the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) emissions of these complexes. Interestingly, the synthesized difluoroboron complexes emitted strong light in the solid state under UV irradiation and exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromism behavior. The emission of a pristine sample of 3-[4-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl]-2,2-difluoro-2H-2(4),3(4)-benzo[e][1,3,2]oxazaborinine (TCH) at 488nm redshifted to 571nm upon grinding, and the ground powder exhibited an orange emission. Fuming with dichloromethane (DCM) or heating at 200 degrees C for 2min led to the recovery of the original solid state that emitted a bluish-green light. XRD patterns illustrate that the mechanofluorochromism features are reasonable for the transformation between the crystalline and amorphous states.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization, and electronic properties of 4-((7-methoxyquinolin-4-yl)oxy), 4-(quinolin-2-ylthio), and 4-((7-(trifluoromethyl)quinolin-4-yl)thio) peripherally substituted oxo-titanium phthalocyanines are described for the first time. The structures of the compounds were determined by UV-Vis, FTIR, 1H NMR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Electronic spectra and molecular and electronic properties of compounds were calculated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) methods. Solvent effects on the electronic, geometric, and reactivity properties of the compounds were also investigated. Global and local reactivity indices and Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces of compounds were calculated. The reactivities and electronic structures of molecules vary depending on the solvent and substituents. It has been found that the synthesized compounds can be used for different purposes such as dye-sensitized solar cells and photodynamic therapy applications.

Abstract:A series of symmetrical tetracyanobutadiene and tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives with a D-A-D'-A-D structural configuration and silafluorene core (D') were designed and readily synthesized via a [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction. We found that the photophysical properties and HOMO and LUMO energy levels and gaps of the silafluorene derivatives could be profoundly remolded through CA-RE reactions and modulated by varying the peripheral donor units from phenyl, m-dimethoxyphenyl, and N,N-dimethylaniline to triphenylamine groups. After CA-RE reactions, the HOMO-LUMO gaps of 1a-1j are in the range of 1.75-2.78 eV, with significant decreases of 0.52-1.46 eV compared to those of the parent silafluorene compounds 2a-2j. The intriguing crystal structures of 1f and 1j were analyzed and elucidated to show their unique potential porosity. The stability, electrochemical, and computational studies were systematically performed to unveil the reshaped electron-donating and -withdrawing nature in one molecular system. 1h-1j with peripherally strong amino donors exhibit an intense and broad intramolecular charge transfer absorption band in the near-infrared region from 550 to 900 nm. The molecular design and synthesis reported here broaden the types and fields of D-A molecular systems for potential applications in organic optoelectronic devices.
Novel salicylic acid derivatives connecting to five-membered cycle through an acyl hydrazone bond as multi-stimuli responsive fluorescent smart materials with photoswitching properties

Abstract:In order to exploit novel multi-stimuli responsive fluorescent materials, a series of novel fluorescent molecules of salicylic acid derivatives were designed and synthesized via introducing pyrazole or cyclopentane to the salicylic acid scaffold through a special Schiff base–acylhydrazone, and the molecular structures of representative compounds A2 and A4 were verified via single crystal X–ray diffraction. All title molecules could exhibit obvious solvatofluorochromism from cyan to indigo in several solutions with different polarity. The fluorescence titration data exhibited compound A2 and complex A2 -Cu 2+ with prime detection limits to Cu 2+ (0.24 μM) and S 2- ions (2.83 μM). The sensitive recognition of A2 to trifluoroacetic (TFA) and A2 -TFA to triethylamine (TEA) were also confirmed via fluorescent titration experiments in various solutions, respectively. What's more, the 1 H NMR and UV/Vis absorption spectra further explained the mechanism between molecules and ions or molecules and TFA/TEA. Besides, the photoswitching properties of the compounds A2 and A3 could be demonstrated via the irradiation of special wavelength light or heating accompanied with changes in quantum yields. In addition, these phenomena of multiple responses were explained via Density Functional Theory (DFT) based on the Gaussian calculations. Thus, this work provided a preliminary basis for the research of multi-stimuli responsive fluorescent molecules with photoswitching properties.

Abstract:The rational design and construction of polyoxotitanium clusters with outstanding photoelectrochemical activity represents a significant challenge in the field. Herein, employing ferrocene as a photosensitizer and incorporating diverse auxiliary ligands, we have successfully constructed a family of structurally varied ferrocene-sensitized polyoxotitanium clusters, formulated as Ti3 3 (mu 3-O) 3-O) (Fcc)2(OiPr)8 2 (O i Pr) 8 ( Ti 3 Fcc- 1, Fcc = ferrocenecarboxylic acid), Ti3 3 (mu 3-O) 3-O) (Fcc) (L1) (OiPr)8 i Pr) 8 ( Ti 3 Fcc-2 , L1 = 6-amino-m-toluenesulfonic m-toluenesulfonic acid), Ti6 6 (mu 3-O)2 3-O) 2 (mu 2-O) 2-O) (Fcc)2 2 (L2)2(OiPr)10 2 (O i Pr) 10 ( Ti 6 Fcc-1 , L2 = salicylhydroxamic acid), Ti6 6 (mu 3-O)4(Fcc)2 3-O) 4 (Fcc) 2 (L3)2(OiPr)10 2 (O i Pr) 10 ( Ti 6 Fcc-2 , L3 = diisopropanolamine), and Ti8 8 (mu 3-O)4(Fcdc)4 3-O) 4 (Fcdc) 4 (L4)2(OiPr)10 2 (O i Pr) 10 ( Ti 8 Fcdc , Fcdc = 1,1-ferrocenedicarboxylic acid, L4 = triisopropanolamine). The incorporation of auxiliary groups can effectively regulate the structure of ferrocenefunctionalized polyoxotitanium clusters, resulting in a gradual growth of the cluster core from Ti3 3 to Ti6, 6 , and ultimately reaching Ti8. 8 . Moreover, these titanium-oxo clusters exhibit displayed enhanced visible light absorption and narrow bandgaps, which are primarily attributed to the charge transport from Fcc/Fcdc and ancillary groups to the cluster core. These Ti-oxo clusters were also used as electrode precursors for investigating their photoelectric behaviors and exhibited clear photocurrent responses. This work not only expands ferrocenesensitized titanium-oxo clusters library, but also provides guidance for the rational design and controllable construction on titanium-based photoactive materials.

Abstract:Bis-salicylaldiminato zinc complexes with four new salicylaldiminato ligands: (Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=C6H4 (2a); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-tBu2C6H2 (2b); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=5-BrC6H3 (2c); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-Br2C6H2 (2d)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 2b was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, showing intermolecular π–π interactions in the solid state. These complexes produce bright fluorescence in both solution and the solid state. In addition, the emission color in solution can be tuned in the range 503–532nm by the modification of the salicylaldiminato ligand.

Abstract:Understanding how chemical modifications alter the atomic‐scale organization of materials is of fundamental importance in materials engineering and the target of considerable efforts in computational prediction. Incorporating covalent and noncovalent interactions in designing crystals while “piggybacking” on the driving force of molecular self‐assembly has augmented efforts to understand the emergence of complex structures using directed synthesis. In this work, microcrystalline powders of the silver 2‐, 3‐, and 4‐fluorobenzenethiolates are prepared and their structures are resolved by small‐molecule serial femtosecond X‐ray crystallography. These three compounds enable the emergence and role of supramolecular synthons in the crystal structures of 3D metal‐organic chalcogenolates to be examined. The unique divergence in their optoelectronic, morphological, and structural behaviors is assessed. The extent of CHF interactions and their influence on the structure and the observed trends in the thermal stability of the crystals are quantified through theoretical calculations and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract:Over the past couple of decades, coordination-driven self-assembly has evolved as a broad multidisciplinary domain that not only covers the syntheses of aesthetically pleasing supramolecular architectures but also emerges as a method to form new optical materials, chemical sensors, theranostic agents, and compounds with light-harvesting and emissive properties. The majority of these applications depend upon investigations that reveal the photophysical nature and electronic structure of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), including two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles and three-dimensional (3D) metallacages. As such, well-defined absorption and emission spectra are important for a given SCC to be used for sensing, bioimaging, and other applications with molecular fluorescence being an important component. In this Account, we summarize the photophysical properties of some bis(phosphine)organoplatinum(II) compounds and their discrete SCCs. The platinum(II) based organometallic precursors typically display spectral red-shifts and have low fluorescence quantum yields and short fluorescence lifetimes compared to their organic counterparts because the introduction of metal centers enhances both intersystem crossing (ISC) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) processes, which can compete with the fluorescence emissions. Likewise ligands with conjugation can also increase the ICT process; hence the corresponding organoplatinum(II) compounds undergo a further decrease in fluorescence lifetimes. The use of endohedral amine functionalized 120°-bispyridyl ligands can dramatically enhance the emission properties of the resultant organoplatinum(II) based SCCs. As such these SCCs display emissions in the visible region (ca. 400-500 nm) and are significantly red-shifted (ca. 80-100 nm) compared to the ligands. This key feature makes them suitable as supramolecular theranostic agents wherein these unique emission properties provide diagnostic spectroscopic handles and the organoplatinum(II) centers act as potential anticancer agents. Using steady state and time-resolved-spectroscopic techniques and quantum computations in concert, we have determined that the emissive properties stem from the ligand-centered transitions involving π-type molecular orbitals with modest contributions from the metal-based orbitals. The self-assembly and the photophysics of organoplatinum(II) ← 3-substituted pyridyl based SCCs are highly diverse. Subtle changes in the ligands' structures can form molecular congener systems with distinct conformational and photophysical properties. Furthermore, the heterometallic SCCs described herein possess rich photophysical properties and can be used for sensing based applications. Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) based SCCs display emissions in the aggregated state as well as in dilute solutions. This is a unique phenomenon that bridges the aggregation caused quenching (ACQ) and aggregation induced emission (AIE) effects. Moreover, a TPE based metallacage exhibits solvatoluminescence, including white light emission in THF solvent, and can act as a fluorescence-sensor for structurally similar ester compounds.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of the novel asymmetric 1-(4-(tetrathiafulvaleneyl)phenyl)ethanone (TTF-PEO) toward the precursor For multifunctional material are described. The tuning of the charge-transfer of TTF-PEO by solvent was realized forming the mono- and dication complexes (TTF-PEO)(2)CuBr4 and (TTF-PEO)(2)(CuBr4)(2)center dot CH2Cl2 center dot(CH3CN in the triclinic P (1) over bar and the orthorhombic Pbca space group, respectively. The anti ferromagnetic behavior for the monocation radical TTF-PEO+center dot salt with CuBr42- displayed obvious phase transition at 110-120 K.

Abstract:Tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (TTF1-TTF9) bearing fluorinated phenyl groups attached through the sulfur bridges have been synthesized by employing a copper-mediated C-S coupling reaction of C6H5-xFxI (x=1, 2, 5) and a zinc-thiolate complex, (TBA)(2)[Zn(DMIT)(2)] (TBA=tetrabutyl ammonium, DMIT=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), as the key step. Particularly, the selective synthesis of C6F5-substituted (TTF8) and C6F4-fused (TTF9) TTFs from C6F5I is disclosed. The physicochemical properties and crystal structures of these TTFs are fully investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry, molecular orbital calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The exchange of hydrogen versus fluorine on the peripheral phenyl groups show a notable influence on both the electronic and crystallographic natures of the resulting TTFs: 1) lowering both the HOMO and the LUMO energy levels, 2) modulating the electrochemical properties by regioselective and/or the degree of fluorination, 3) enhancing the driving forces of stacking by multiple fluorine interactions (F...S, C-F...pi/pi(F), C-F...F-C, and C-F...H). This work indicates that the decoration with fluorinated phenyls holds promise to produce functional TTFs with novel electronic and aggregation features.

Abstract:The novel and precise design of both a microscopic ligand and macroscopic structure has been demonstrated to improve the stability and potential optical applications of Ag44 clusters. The ligand with designed silane substituents on its thiophenol enabled the synthesized [Ag44(SPhSi(OEt)3)30](PPh4)4 clusters to maintain UV-vis absorption for 13 h when heated at 60°C in air and be readily coated with silica shells via a one-pot reverse microemulsion method. This composite structure overcomes the issue that non-luminescent Ag44 clusters cannot be applied in photothermal and photoacoustic imaging due to their instability.
