Abstract:Three metal-organic complexes Cd(HBIDC)(phen)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Cd(BIC)(Phen)](n) (2) and {[Eu(HBIDC)(H2BIDC)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) H2O) 1 (3) (H3BIDC=benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2BIC=benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With similar reaction conditions, reactions of the same ligand with different metal cations selected from different blocks (d-block and f-block) result in different coordination modes of carboxylate groups and final frameworks of complexes 1 and 3. The decarboxylation was observed in complex 2 and resulted in the formation of BIC2- ligand. Complexes 1-3 have intense fluorescent emissions at room temperature in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in the solid-state, which indicate they are potential fluorescence materials. The quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes of these three complexes were systematically studied. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Five new compounds with mixed-ligand formulated as (H4bptc)(phen) (1), [In(phen)2Cl2](H4bptc)(NO3)(H2O) (2), [In(Hbptc)(phen)(H2O)]2 (3), In(2,6-pydc)(phen)(H2O)Cl (4), and {[In(2,6-pydc)(Ox)0.5(H2O)2](H2O)}2 (5) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Compounds 1–5 display white, green and blue fluorescence at 298K in the solid state, respectively. It is shown that 1 assumes solvent-dependent photoluminescence. By contrast, the different polarities of solvents do not alter the luminescence position of 3 and 5. The thermogravimetric curves show that binuclear compounds 3 and 5 have excellent thermal stability, whose structures are stable up to 190 and 272°C, respectively.

Abstract:Six 5-coordinate 2,6-bis(imino)pyridine metal complexes, [2,6-(ArN=CMe)2C5H3NMCl2 center dot nCH3CN] (Ar = 4-MeC6H4, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn1, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd1; Ar = 2,6-Et2C6H3, M = Zn, n = 0.5, Zn2, M = Cd, n = 0.5, Cd2; Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, M = Zn, n = 1, Zn3, M = Cd, n = 1, Cd3), were synthesized in acetonitrile by the reactions of the corresponding bis(imino)pyridines with ZnCl2 or CdCl2 center dot 2.5H2O, respectively. The structures of Zn1-Zn3 and Cd1-Cd3 were determined by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all complexes, the ligand is tridentate with further coordination by two chlorides, resulting in a distorted trigonal bipyramid. All complexes self-assemble through hydrogen bonding interactions to form a 3-D supramolecular structure. At 298 K in dichloromethane, all complexes have blue luminescent emissions at 405-465 nm, which can be attributed to ligand-centered * transitions. The zinc and cadmium centers play a key role in enhancing fluorescent emission of the ligands.
Different Conjugated System Cd(II)/Hg(II) Schiff Base Complexes: Syntheses, Supramolecular Metal−organic Frameworks, Luminescent Properties and DFT Study

Abstract:A series of different conjugated systems of 2D/3D supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) are constructed by C/O-HCl hydrogen bonds and interactions. These complexes, [(HgLCl2)-Cl-1] (1), [(HgLCl2)-Cl-2] (2), [(HgLCl2)-Cl-3] (3), [(CdLCl4)-Cl-4](2) (4), and [(CdLCl2)-Cl-5(CH3OH)] (5), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, H-1 NMR, FT-IR, and EA. The X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that 1 features a 3D supramolecular framework with {4(4)?6(6)} topology structure, while 2, 3, and 5 exhibit 3D 6-connected {4(12)?6(3)} topology structures. Complex 4 shows a two-dimensional layer with 4(4) topology structure. Based on these varied structures caused by different conjugated system, the emission maximum wavelengths of 1-5 can be tuned in a large range of 492-587nm. Both electron-donating ability and the conjugated system in general can support (em) shift to red direction. In order to have better understanding of electronic transitions of the complexes, a time-dependent DFT study has been performed. The enhancement of the fluorescence intensities for the complexes compared to the ligands indicates potential to serve as photoactive materials.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Four novel five-coordinated Sn(IV) and Pb(IV) complexes of 2,6-bis(2'-indolyl)pyridine (H(2)bip) and 2,6-bis[2'-(7-azaindolyl)lpyridine (H(2)bap) were synthesized. These four complexes have the formulas Sn(bip)Ph-2 (1), Sn(bap)Ph-2 (2), Pb(bip)Ph-2 (3), and Pb(bap)Ph-2 (4), respectively. The structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the complexes, the metal centers are tridentately chelated by the bip or the bap ligand and further coordinated by two phenyl groups, resulting in a distorted-trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. These complexes display interesting extended pi-pi stack structures in the solid state. Complexes 1 and 2 are luminescent at room temperature in solution and the solid state. At 77 K in THF solution, all four complexes display both blue-green fluorescent and orange-red phosphorescent emissions, which originate from ligand-centered pi-->pi* transitions. The Sn(IV) and Pb(IV) centers play a key role in enhancing phosphorescent emission of the bip and bap ligands.

Abstract:Bis-salicylaldiminato zinc complexes with four new salicylaldiminato ligands: (Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=C6H4 (2a); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-tBu2C6H2 (2b); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=5-BrC6H3 (2c); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-Br2C6H2 (2d)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 2b was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, showing intermolecular π–π interactions in the solid state. These complexes produce bright fluorescence in both solution and the solid state. In addition, the emission color in solution can be tuned in the range 503–532nm by the modification of the salicylaldiminato ligand.

Abstract:Eight neutral iridium(III) complexes (Ir1–Ir8) containing an electron-withdrawing pentafluorosulfanyl (−SF5) group on cyclometalated ligands with different ancillary ligands were synthesized and investigated. 2-(3/4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyrimidine (for Ir1 and Ir2), 1-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)isoquinoline (for Ir3 and Ir4), and 2-(3/4-(pentafluorosulfanyl)phenyl)pyridine (for Ir5–Ir8) were chosen as cyclometalated ligands and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (for Ir1–Ir4), tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate (for Ir5 and Ir6), and bis(diphenylphorothioyl)amide (for Ir7 and Ir8) were used as ancillary ligands. The crystal structures of Ir1, Ir3, Ir4, Ir6, and Ir8 also confirmed the identities of these complexes. Complexes Ir1, Ir2, and Ir5–Ir8 exhibit sky blue to green emissions (480–533 nm) with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency yields up to 94.7% in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature. Complexes Ir3 and Ir4 are red phosphors (λmax = 607 nm, Φ = 76.8% for Ir3 and λmax = 627 nm, Φ = 49.2% for Ir4, respectively). Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide a further study of the orbital distributions and electronic states of eight Ir(III) complexes. Additionally, ion detection studies reveal that Ir2 has the potential for detecting Hg2+ ion.

Abstract:Five polynuclear complexes of d(10) metals with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(HMBD) or 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (HMBT), namely, [N(CH2CH3)(4)][Cu-3(MBD)(2)] (1), [N(CH3)(CH2CH3)(3)](2)[Cu-6(MBD)(6)]Cl-2 (2), [Ag-6(MBT)(6)] (3), [Zn-4(mu(4)-O)-(MBD)(6)]center dot 3CH(3)OH (4), and [Zn-4(mu(4)-O)(MBT)(6)] (5), have been synthesized undersolvothernial conditions. The photoluminescence properties of complexes 1-5 have been studied, and three primary colors, red, green, and blue were observed from these complexes.

Abstract:Four novel interesting coordination polymers, [Cd-3(bix)(3)(SSA)(2)(H2O)(4)](n) (1), [Co(bix)(2)(HSSA)(H2O)center dot H2O](n) (2), [Ni(bix)(2)(HSSA)(H2O)center dot H2O](n) (3) and [Mn(bix)(2)center dot(HSSA)center dot 2H(2)O](n) (4) (bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene; H(3)SSA = 5-sulfosalicylic acid), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized. Polymer 1 features a two-dimensional (2D) infinite layer framework built from tri-cadmium clusters, which is further stacked along the c-axis via strong interlayer hydrogen-bond interactions to form a three-dimensional (3D) network. Both polymers 2 and 3 exhibit one-dimensional (1D) double-stranded chains, which are connected by strong hydrogen-bond interactions along the c-axis to result in 2D layers; in addition, the layers are further stacked along the b-axis by pi-pi interactions. Polymer 4 also possesses 1D double-stranded chains. It is noteworthy that ligand HSSA in compound 4 is not coordinated to the metal ions but only acts as an anion moiety to compensate the charge balance. The fluorescent properties for these compounds were investigated and the mechanisms were validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the experimental geometries. In addition, 4 is nearly paramagnetic, whereas weak ferromagnetic interactions between M(II) (M = Co, Ni) ions have been found in 2 and 3.

Abstract:Three novel silver(l) complexes [Ag2(L)21(NO3)2 (4 [Ag2(L)21(BF4)2 (2) and [Ag2(L)21(CF3CO2)2 (3) have been synthesized by reactions of Schiff base ligand 1-(imidazol-4-yl)-5-(imidazol1-yl)-2-azapent-l-ene (L) with the corresponding metal salts and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex I has one dimensional (ID) chain structure, while complex 2 has two-dimensional (213) network structure, in which two unique ID chains with different shapes are linked together via Ag... Ag interactions. Complex 3 features a discrete M21_2 molecular ring. The results show that the nature of the counterions has remarkable impact on the structure of the supramolecular structures. The photoluminescent properties of the synthesized complexes were studied in the solid state at room temperature. In addition, complex I was further investigated by electrospray mass spectrometry. Abstract:Six new triorganotin 3‐(salicylideneamino)benzoates (1a–1c) and 3‐(4‐oxo‐2‐penten‐2‐ylamino)benzoates (2a–2c), 3‐(2‐HOC6H4CH=N)C6H4COOSnR3, and 3‐(CH3COCH=C(CH3)NH)C6H4COOSnR3 (R = Ph, a; Cy, b; Bu, c) have been synthesized by one‐pot reaction of 3‐aminobenzoic acid, salicylaldehyde (or 2,4‐pentanedione), and triorganotin hydroxide and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C, and 119Sn) spectra. The crystal structures of 1a, 1b, and 2a–2c have been determined by the single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Complexes 1a and 2a exhibit a 44‐membered macrocyclic tetramer and a polymeric zigzag chain, respectively, in which tin atoms show trans‐[C3SnO2] trigonal bipyramidal geometry with the axial positions being occupied by the carboxylate oxygen atom and the phenolic (or ketone) oxygen atom from another ligand. Complex 1b adopts a distorted tetrahedral geometry at tin, and there are two molecules differing in the relative orientation of the carboxylate toward the imino group. Compounds 2a⋅CH3OH, 2b⋅H2O, and 2c⋅H2O are five‐coordinated mononuclear adducts with one coordinated solvent molecule and display different supramolecular organizations in which there are the centrosymmetric R22(16), R42(22), and R64(34) macrocycle motifs formed by the O–H⋅⋅⋅O, N–H⋅⋅⋅O, and C–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds. The fluorescence spectrum indicates that the complexes may be explored for potential blue luminescent materials. Compared to cisplatin, these compounds exhibit enhanced cytotoxic efficacy and can be considered as anticancer agents for further study.

Abstract:Two LnIII complexes Ln(HTMSA)3(H2O)25.5H2O (Ln = Dy (1) and Tb (2), H2TMSA = 5-azotriazolyl-3-methoxysalicylaldehyde) and two MnII-LnIII cluster [Mn(H2O)6][MnLn2(TTMSA)4(HTTMSA)2(H2O)6]4H2O (Ln = Dy (3) and Tb (4), H2TTMSA = 5-azotetrazolyl-3-methoxysalicylaldehyde) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 are isostructural complexes in which the LnIII ions are surrounded by six oxygen atoms from three chelate HTMSA ligands and two oxygen atoms from two coordinated water molecules forming a distorted square-anti-prismatic geometry. In complexes 3 and 4, the MnII ions adjust two LnIII mononuclear into tri-nuclear LnIII-MnII-LnIII anion cluster, with an additional [Mn(H2O)6]2+ as a counter ion to keep the electroneutrality of the compound. Magnetic studies reveal that all the complexes of 1−4 show nonzero out-of-phase signals, indicating single-molecule magnet behavior. The photoluminescence spectra of all the complexes were investigated and discussed in detail.

Abstract:This study is committed to the synthesis and characterization of a series of bi‐, tri‐ and tetranuclear coordination compounds. These compounds are produced through the reactions of zinc(II) or cadmium(II) ions as coordination centers with flexible bis(quinolyl) ligands HL1 (N,N'‐bis‐quinolin‐2‐ylmethylene‐carbohydrazide) or HL2 (N,N'‐bis‐quinolin‐2‐ylmethylenecarbonothioic dihydrazide), in conjunction with chloride, thiocyanate, iodide or hydroxyl anions serving as the coordinated counterions. These compounds are denoted as [Zn 3 (L1) 2 Cl(NCS) 3 ]∙2DMF∙H 2 O ( 1 ), [Zn 4 (L1) 2 Cl 3.8 I 0.2 (OH) 2 ]∙8H 2 O ( 2 ), [Cd 2 (L1)I 3 (H 2 O)(DMF)]∙DMF∙0.25H 2 O ( 3 ), [Zn 3 (L2) 2 Cl 4 ]∙3DMF∙2H 2 O ( 4 ), [Zn 3 (L2) 2 Cl(NCS) 3 ]∙3DMF ( 5 ), [Zn 4 (L2) 2 Cl 4 (OH) 2 ]∙3DMF∙2H 2 O ( 6 ), and [Cd 4 (L2) 2 I 6 ]∙2DMF ( 7 ). An array of analytical techniques including elemental analyses, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, powder X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and comprehensive single crystal structure analyses have been utilized to elucidate the nature of these compounds. The crystal structures of compounds 1 to 7 exhibit complex supramolecular networks, arranged in zero, one, two, or three dimensions, primarily mediated by various interactions such as intermolecular π∙∙∙π, C―H∙∙∙π, C―H∙∙∙Cl, C―H∙∙∙S weak interactions, in addition to hydrogen bonding. The structural diversity highlights the key roles of the variable coordinating counterions and the coordination modes of the iodide anions in shaping the architectures of the coordination compounds. Furthermore, the luminescent characteristics of compounds 1 to 7 have been assessed in the solid state.

Abstract:Four new fluconazole-bridged zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes with dicarboxylate co-ligands, namely [Zn(HFlu)(TPA)]n (1), {[Cd(HFlu)2(TPA)]·2CH3OH}n (2), [Zn(HFlu)2(Suc)(H2O)2]·H2O (3), and [Cd(HFlu)2(Suc)(H2O)2]·H2O (4), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (HFlu=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-1,3-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-propan-2-ol, H2TPA=terephthalic acid, and H2Suc=succinic acid). Complex 1 displays a 2-D corrugated network with common (4,4) topology, in which two types of grids constructed by two bridging TPA dianions and two HFlu ligands are found. Complex 2 shows an unusual (3,6) coordination layer consisting of alternative PMPM Cd–HFlu helical chains in which the Cd(II) nodes are also fixed by terephthalate dianions in a cis fashion. The isostructural complexes 3 and 4 have 20-membered dimeric macrocyclic motifs with the Zn···Zn and Cd···Cd distances of 11.258(2) and 11.528(2)Å, respectively. The fluorescence and thermal stability of complexes 1–4 have also been investigated.

Abstract:Hydrothermal reactions of cadmium(II) or silver(I) salt, NaN3, 4-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzonitrile (IBN) yield three coordination complexes, [Cd(L)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 3H(2)O (1), [Cd-3(L)(5)(OH)] (2) and [Ag-2(L)(2)] (3) where HL = 1-(5-tetrazolyl)-4-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene. The crystal structure analysis revealed that 1 has 1D hinged-chain structure containing 24-membered ring with a Cd center dot center dot center dot Cd intra-chain distance of 13.18 angstrom, while 2 is 1D ladder-like chain with Cd3O core. However, the complex 3 is a 3D 4-connected framework with Schlafli symbol of (4(2).6(3).8)(4(3).6(2).8). The L- ligand was found to show four different coordination modes in 1-3, as 2-, 3- and 4-connector, respectively. The results indicate that the coordination modes of the ligand and metal centers with different coordination geometry have great influence on the structures of the complexes. Abstract:Four new coordination complexes [Cd(DPBA-3)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2·2H2O (1), [Cd(DPBA-3)(DMF)(NO3)2]·DMF (2), [Cd3(DPBA-3)2(SCN)6]·2DMF·4H2O (3) and [Zn(DPBA-3)(SCN)2] (4) [DPBA-3=N,N′-di(pyridin-3-yl)pyridine-3,5-dicarboxamide] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1, 3 and 4 exhibit three different types of one-dimensional (1D) chain structures constructed by the metal ions and DPBA-3 ligands, and the Cd(II)-DPBA-3 1D chains in 3 are further linked by bridging SCN− ligands to afford a three-dimensional (3D) framework. Complex 2 possesses a (6,3) two-dimensional (2D) layer structure. In 1–4, the hydrogen bonds involving the amide groups play important role to stabilize the resultant frameworks. The photoluminescence properties of the DPBA-3 and the complexes were studied in the solid state at room temperature.
