Abstract:A zirconium metallic organic framework UiO-66-NH2 has been synthesized and is further modified with imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde by a covalent post synthetic route which is based on a Schiff-base reaction. The as-prepared, functionalized MOF named UiO-66-NH2-IM is fully characterized. It retains its structural integrity during the PSM process and shows excellent luminescence and good fluorescence stability in water. It has also been further utilized as a sensitive fluorescent probe for sensing ions. The results show that UiO-66-NH2-IM can be developed into a highly selective and sensitive sensor for the detection of S2O82- (detection limit, 8.63 M) and Fe3+ ions (detection limit, 4.95 M) by fluorescence quenching of UiO-66-NH2-IM. All the possible mechanisms involved are discussed. Remarkably, it is the first covalent post-synthesized MOF to be developed as a colorimetric fluorescent sensor for the detection of S2O82- and Fe3+.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bond driven self-assembly of carbon dot-based luminescent materials has been widely studied in the fields of sensor and optoelectronic devices. However, the uniformly confinement of carbon-dots (CDs) into crystalline porous materials through hydrogen bond interactions has rarely been reported. Herein, an O-phenylenediamine (O-PD) mediated Zr-based MOF material denoted as CDs@UiO-66(COOH) 2 was successfully synthesized via an efficient solvent-free synthetic method. The O-PD molecules were grafted to the structural pyromellitic acid ligands in UiO-66(COOH) 2 framework via H-bonding interactions, during the subsequent thermal treatment process the O-PD molecules were partially decomposed and converted into luminescent CDs. The resultant CDs@UiO-66(COOH) 2 composite remained the crystallinity of UiO-66(COOH) 2 , and the confined CDs in UiO-66(COOH) 2 shows excitation-independent stable green emitting properties when dispersed in a variety of solvents. The CDs@UiO-66(COOH) 2 composite exhibits excellent chlortetracycline detection performance with high selectivity, anti-interference and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.102 μM) in a wide linear range of 0-100 μM. Also, it shows excellent stimuli-response in fluorescence intensities to pH and temperature changes. Acting as an optical thermometer, the maximum relative temperature sensitivity ( S r ) is 0.82 % o C -1 in the range of 10-80 o C. This work opens a new way for exploring fluorescent CDs integrated MOF composite via a hydrogen-bond driving strategy for multifunctional fluorescent sensing applications.

Abstract:A post-synthetic modification method was developed to prepare fluorescent metal organic frameworks by the covalent interaction of ethoxycarbonyl isothiocyanate with amine functionalized UMCM-4. X-ray diffraction spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, elemental analysis, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis/derivative thermogravimetry analysis, and nitrogen sorption isotherms were employed to characterize the modified metal organic frameworks. With high emission efficiency and excellent fluorescence stability, the sensing properties of Fe3+ were studied. Possible mechanisms of energy and electron transfers between the target and the fluorescent probe were demonstrated. Effects of response time, Fe3+ concentration, and other metal ions on the fluorescence intensity were also studied.

Abstract:Employing a V-shaped rigid multicarboxylate ligand 1,3-di(2',5'-dicarboxypheny)benzene acid (H4L), three microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), H-2[Co-4(O)L-2(H2O)(2)]center dot 3DMA center dot 8H(2)O (1), H-3[Zn2.5L2]center dot NMP center dot 5H(2)O (2), and H-3[Cd2.5L2]center dot 4DMF center dot 3H(2)O (3) were synthesized and characterized. Compound 1 exhibits a cage-based (3,6)-connected rtl topological MOF with [Co4O(COO)(8)] clusters and highly selective adsorption of CO2 over CH4. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and display a rare 4,8-connected flu net with linear trinuclear [Zn-3(COO)(6)] clusters. Interestingly, when compound 3 was soaked in DMF solution containing Eu3+ ions, an Eu-loaded compound Eu@3 with bright red fluorescence was obtained, which reveals highly selective sensing for Cu2+, Fe3+, and Cr2O72- ions. This represents an unusual example to achieve the detection of Cu2+, Fe3+, and Cr2O72- ions simultaneously by fluorescence spectrometry based on a recyclable Eu-loaded MOF sensor.

Abstract:Residual heavy metal ions in water pose a major hazard to ecology as well as human health, and Cu2+, as the most common heavy metal ion in water bodies, can cause a variety of diseases in human beings with prolonged exposure, therefore, a rational sensing platform is needed for the specific detection of Cu2+. In this work, based on the solvothermal method, we successfully prepared the composite UIO-66@FS by encapsulating the dye fluorescein sodium molecule (FS) with a metal-organic framework material (UIO-66). The composite material has bright fluorescence emission properties with a fluorescence quantum yield of 62.03 %, and the composite material has been used to construct a fluorescence sensing platform for detecting the heavy metal Cu2+ in the aqueous environment. The fluorescence of UIO-66@FS can be greatly quenched by Cu2+, which is visible to the naked eye under UV lamp. The sensing platform is able to withstand environmental interference and has the advantages of high selectivity, excellent sensitivity, fast response, wide linear range (2.5 µM-500 µM), and low detection limit (0.246 µM) in the fluorescence quenching detection of Cu2+. In addition, the sensor has been used to detect Cu2+ in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Therefore, this sensing probe can be an excellent candidate for Cu2+ detection and has wonderful potential for real water sample detection.

Abstract:A fluorescent pH sensor based on post-synthetically modified nanoscale UiO-67-bpydc by encapsulating Eu3+ cations in the pores was fabricated. The Eu3+ incorporated sample (Eu3+@UiO-67-bpydc) shows excellent luminescence due to the sensitization and protection provided by the parented framework. Subsequently, Eu3+@UiO-67-bpydc was developed as a pH sensor. Eu3+@UiO-67-bpydc shows good chemical resistance to both acidity and alkalinity solutions with pH ranging from 1.06 to 10.99, which makes it potentially useful for wide-range pH sensor. In addition, cycling experiments have demonstrated the utilizability of the sensor. The MU analysis shows that Eu3+@UiO-67-bpydc possesses favourable biocompatibility. Furthermore, fluorescence imaging of Eu3+@UiO-67-bpydc in PC12 cells was also performed to test its feasibility in vivo. Given its exceptional stability and pH-dependent fluorescent intensity, the fluorescent probe should be a promising candidate for application in fluorescent pH sensing in vitro and in vivo. Abstract:Dye-loaded metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as one of the most fascinating luminescent materials for selective chemical sensing. Herein, a facile two-step synthesis procedure is reported for the successful encapsulation of fluorescein dye into porous zinc-adenine metal-organic framework (bio-MOF-1) crystals, and thus the aggregation-caused quenching of dye molecules can be eliminated in the confined MOF structure to further create dual emission centers. The as-prepared solid state fluorescein@bio-MOF-1 composite exhibits both the characteristic emissions of the fluorescein dye and bio-MOF-1, and host-guest energy transfer also occurs. Particularly, depending on the variety of the luminescence intensities of different metal ions incorporated in fluorescein@bio-MOF-1, such a host-guest system could be used for high-sensitive sensing of metal cations, especially for the drastic luminescence quenching of Fe3+ ions. The quenching effect coefficient (K-sv) for every metal ion detected is calculated, and the largest K-sv value for Fe3+ ions is determined to be 5072 M-1. Such an encapsulation strategy can be widely adopted to design new dye@MOF composites with multiple luminescent centers for metal cation sensing.

Abstract:A novel fluorescent probe (C460@Tb-MOFs) was designed and synthesized by encapsulating the fluorescent dye 7-diethylamino-4-methyl coumarin (C460) into a terbium-based metal–organic framework using a simple ultrasonic impregnation method. It is impressive that this dye-modified metal–organic framework can specifically detect styrene and temperature upon luminescence quenching. The sensing platform of this material exhibits great selectivity, fast response, and good cyclability toward styrene detection. It is worth mentioning that the sensing process undergoes a distinct color change from blue to colorless, providing conditions for the accurate visual detection of styrene liquid and gas. The significant fluorescence quenching mechanism of styrene toward C460@Tb-MOFs is explored in detail. Moreover, the dye-modified metal–organic framework can also achieve temperature sensing from 298 to 498 K with high relative sensitivity at 498 K. The preparation of functionalized MOF composites with fluorescent dyes provides an effective strategy for the construction of sensors for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:The fluorescent dye molecules have gained wide attention for their applications in areas such as imaging and sensor. However, the properties of the fluorescent dyes are limited due to the built-in problems such as the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Herein, a fluorescent dye@MOF was developed by encapsulating fluorescent dye molecules into the channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to disperse them. This composite material SRB@UiO-66, equipping appreciable stability, was successfully obtained with sulfonyl rhodamine B (SRB) integrated into UiO-66. The composite material overtly accelerated the fluorescence property of SRB due to the limitation of nanometer channels on SRB, while UiO-66 has some fluorescence properties. Besides, SRB@UiO-66 with dual emission centers can be utilized as ratiometric sensors for Fe3+ detection in aqueous solution owing to their high sensitivity and selectivity. SRB@UiO-66 shows a new possibility to fabricate fluorescent molecular probes for the determination of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a highly promising platform for various sensing applications due to their tunable structures and functionalities. In the present work, a Eu3+-doped mixed-ligand MOF, namely, the Eu3+@UiO-66-IPA, exhibited excellent luminescent properties and high fluorescence stability in aqueous media, displaying dual-emission peaks under 395 and 615 nm excitation that were readily visible to the naked eye. Importantly, the presence of fluoride ions (F-) promoted the "antenna effect" between the ligand and the Eu3+ centers, which significantly enhanced the emission intensity of the Eu3+ characteristic peak. In addition, the addition of F- also inhibited the quenching effect of high-energy O-H bonds existing in the aqueous environment. Notably, Eu3+@UiO-66-IPA demonstrated exceptional selectivity for F- over a range of competing anions, with a remarkable limit of detection as low as 0.22 mu M. The developed Eu3+-doped mixed-ligand MOF system offers a highly promising strategy for the simple and accurate sensing of F- in practical applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as chemical sensors have developed rapidly in recent years. There have been many papers concerning this field and interest is still growing. The reason is that the specific merits of MOFs can be utilized to enhance sensitivity and selectivity by various energy/charge transfers occurring among different ligands, ligand, and metal centers, such as from ligands to metal centers or metal centers to ligands, as well as from MOF skeletons to guest species. This review intends to provide an update on recent progress in various applications of different MOF-based sensors on the basis of their luminescent and electrochemical responses towards small molecules, gas molecules, ions (cations and anions), pH, humidity, temperature, and biomolecules. MOF-based sensors function by utilizing different mechanisms, including luminescent responses of "turn-on" and "turn-off", as well as electrochemical responses.
