Abstract:Ag nanoparticles were synthesized by electron beam irradiation in the transmission electron microscope chamber at room temperature and the growth mechanism was explored in detail. The sizes of the Ag nanoparticles are controlled by the electron beam current density. Two nanoparticle growth stages were identified. The first growth stage was dominated by the discharging effect, while the second stage was controlled by the heating effect. The nanoparticle synthesis method should be applicable to the synthesis of other metallic nanoparticles.

Abstract:Direct writing utilizing a focused electron beam constitutes an interesting alternative to resist-based techniques, as it allows for precise and flexible growth onto any conductive substrate in a single-step process. One important challenge, however, is the identification of appropriate precursors which allow for deposition of the material of choice, e.g., for envisaged applications in nano-optics. In this regard the coinage metal silver is of particular interest since it shows a relatively high plasma frequency and, thus, excellent plasmonic properties in the visible range. By utilizing the precursor compound AgO2Me2Bu, direct writing of silver-based nanostructures via local electron beam induced deposition could be realized for the first time. Interestingly, the silver deposition was strongly dependent on electron dose; at low doses of 30 nC/μm2 a dominant formation of pure silver crystals was observed, while at higher electron doses around 104 nC/μm2 large carbon contents were measured. A scheme for the enhanced silver deposition under low electron fluxes by an electronic activation of precursor dissociation below thermal CVD temperature is proposed and validated using material characterization techniques. Finally, the knowledge gained was employed to fabricate well-defined two-dimensional deposits with maximized silver content approaching 75 at. %, which was achieved by proper adjustment of the deposition parameters. The corresponding deposits consist of plasmonically active silver crystallites and demonstrate a pronounced Raman signal enhancement of the carbonaceous matrix.

Abstract:Two dimensional nanostructures film silver nanoparticles(NPs) formed through self-assembly method exhibit an unique optical property,including extraordinarily offering large amounts of "hot spots",which make them ideal candidate of surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate.In this paper,large-area Ag films composed of close-packed NPs were fabricated by taking advantage of self-assemble at heptanes/water interface.Using Rhodamine 6G(R6G) as probing molecules,the SERS characteristic of the films composed of silver NPs with variant sizes was exploited.It is found that films with Ag size of 160 nm exhibited optimal enhancement effect.Moreover,the films made of closely-packed NPs unambiguously showed much enhancement than the films composed of sparse ones by simply dropping Ag sols.

Abstract:We studied silicon, carbon, and SiC x nanostructures fabricated using liquid-phase electron-beam-induced deposition technology in transmission electron microscopy systems. Nanodots obtained from fixed electron beam irradiation followed a universal size versus beam dose trend, with precursor concentrations from pure SiCl 4 to 0 % SiCl 4 in CH 2 Cl 2 , and electron beam intensity ranges of two orders of magnitude, showing good controllability of the deposition. Secondary electrons contributed to the determination of the lateral sizes of the nanostructures, while the primary beam appeared to have an effect in reducing the vertical growth rate. These results can be used to generate donut-shaped nanostructures. Using a scanning electron beam, line structures with both branched and unbranched morphologies were also obtained. The liquid-phase electron-beam-induced deposition technology is shown to be an effective tool for advanced nanostructured material generation.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanism of metal oxidation processes is critical for maintaining the desired properties of metals and catalysts, as well as for designing advanced materials. In this work, we investigate the electron beam induced oxidation of silver using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The additions of Ag-O columns on {111} and {110} planes were captured with atomic resolution. Interestingly, oscillatory growth on {110} planes was observed, which resulted from the double effect of electron beam irradiation. It was found that not only thermodynamic factors but also kinetic factors played significant roles in morphology evolutions. These results can facilitate the fundamental understanding of the oxidation process of Ag and provide a promising approach for the fabrication of desired nanostructures.

Abstract:An electron beam inducing method for sprouting large quantities of silver nanoparticles on the surface of silver chloride particles is reported. The electron beam driven process was characterized by time-dependent scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), allowing for observing several key intermediates in and characteristics of the growth process. Theoretical calculation coupled with experimental observation demonstrated that the growth of silver nanoparticles was mostly related to the current density of electron beam. Decomposition of the silver chloride on the surface of sample was under electron beam irradiation resulted in silver nanoparticles and chlorine. This phenomenon could be useful in developing a novel mechanism for preparation of nanostructures and proposing a reference to avoid image distortion during the characterization of silver compounds under SEM.

Abstract:In this paper, we report a novel electrochemical deposition (ECD) method to fabricate silver nanoscale wires and dendrites. We carry out the electrochemical deposition (ECD) process on a small piece of Si wafer. On its surface, there are micro-scale predefined silver electrodes. We use organic solution (N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF)) instead of metal salt solution as the electrolyte. Usually the fractal structures can be formed in the electrochemical deposition (ECD) process. When an external resistor is introduced in the ECD circuit, instead of fractal structures, silver nanoscale wires and dendrites can be obtained between two electrodes in situ in the Si chip. The diameters of the silver nanowires are about 40-200 nm and the electric properties of the silver nanowire with a diameter about 100 nm have been measured. We have proposed a possible formation mechanism for these silver nanoscale wires and dendrites.

Abstract:Sliver nanowires (Ag NWs) are promising building blocks for electronic nanodevices, and therefore, their precise movement and assembly are urgently needed. Here, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to model the manipulation of Ag NWs on a silicon substrate using a tungsten (W) probe. The focus is on understanding the deformation and motion mechanisms of the Ag NWs induced by the moving probe. Throughout the manipulation process, Ag NWs undergo four distinct stages: plastic deformation, deformation extension, a hybrid stage, and either movement or fracture. At the contact area between the probe and the Ag NWs, as well as in regions of stress concentration, Ag atoms are observed to transition from FCC to HCP, BCC, and even amorphous states. Notably, the BCC phase serves as an intermediate transition state during this lattice transformation. The manipulation parameters, particularly the velocity and displacement of the probe, significantly influence the outcome of the Ag NWs. High-speed manipulation with small displacements tends to result in Ag NW fracture, whereas low-speed manipulation with larger displacements facilitates the bending or movement of the Ag NWs. Drawing from the observed deformation behaviors, a nanomanipulation platform integrated within a scanning electron microscope (SEM) was developed. This platform enables the in situ pushing, cutting, bending, and rotating of Ag NWs using a W probe, employing various probe feeding strategies. By combination of two or more of these manipulation operations, complex close-loop structures, such as triangles and hexagons, were successfully assembled via Ag NWs. This research offers valuable insights into the precise and controlled manipulation of Ag NWs, paving the way for the fabrication of sophisticated, high-performance nanodevices.

Abstract:Electron beam irradiation has become a powerful tool for designing material structures and studying nanostructure growth down to the individual nanoparticle (NP) level; the method has important fundamental research implications and potential technological applications. However, controlling NP growth under high-energy bombardment is challenging owing to the rapid and unconstrained evolution of NPs during nanofabrication. Herein, a real-time in situ study of epitaxial regrowth of partially sublimated NPs was performed using an FEI Titan 80–300 transmission electron microscope operated at 300 kV. Hybrid NPs containing Ag, Cu, and CuAg with particle sizes of 2–20 nm were obtained via electron beam irradiation of large (35 nm) CuAg NPs at 500 °C. NPs sublimed with increased temperature. Interestingly, domain-confined layer-by-layer epitaxial regrowth on the Ag{111} and {100} facets was observed for partially sublimated NPs. The newly grown part was mostly Ag, as determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Electron beam irradiation was a key activator for epitaxial regrowth. This study provides real-time regrowth dynamics information at an atomic level, providing new insights into nanostructure growth control in gaseous environments, finding promising applications in nanofabrication.

Abstract:A combination of microcontact printing and block copolymer nanoreactors succeeded in fabricating arrays of silver nanoparticle aggregates. A complex solution of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) micelles and silver salt was used as an ink to form thin films or droplets on polydimethylsiloxane stamp protrusions. After these complex aggregates were printed onto silicon substrates under controlled conditions, highly ordered arrays of disklike, dishlike, and dotlike complex aggregates were obtained. Abstract:This paper reports a practical approach of in stiu preparation of silver nanoroing by electron beam-induced method.Ag-TiO2 gel film was prepared by the sol-gel process combined with dip-lift method,followed by heat treatment to form solid film.By using the electron beam as radiate source and control the time of radiation,the formation process of silver nanoring was observed on the surface of Ag/TiO2 film.The silver nanoring had an inner diameter of 100~280 nm and outer diameter of 120~300 nm.

Abstract:We report controllable assembly of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for patterning of silver microstructures. The assembly is induced by femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW). A tightly focused femtosecond laser beam is capable of trapping and driving Ag NPs to form desired micropatterns with a high resolution of ∼190 nm. Taking advantage of the 'direct writing' feature, three microelectrodes have been integrated with a microfluidic chip; two silver-based microdevices including a microheater and a catalytic reactor have been fabricated inside a microfluidic channel for chip functionalization. The FsLDW-induced programmable assembly of Ag NPs may open up a new way to the designable patterning of silver microstructures toward flexible fabrication and integration of functional devices.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have attracted widespread attention due to their tremendous electrical and optical properties. Nanoparticles exhibit a strong tendency to aggregate and sinter in a short period of time during processing or use due to their large surface area-to-volume ratio, which may lead to significant changes in their required performance. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct in-depth research on the sintering process and mechanism of nanoparticles to maintain their stability. Here, the sintering process of CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals under continuous electron beam irradiation was studied using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the early stages of sintering, CdSe/CdS nanocrystals approached each other at a distance of approximately 1–2 nm. As the exposure time to the electron beam increased, the movement of surface atoms on the nanocrystals led to contact between them. Subsequently, the atoms on the contact surfaces underwent rapid motion, resulting in the rapid formation of the neck between the particles. The neck formation between adjacent particles provides strong evidence of a sintering mechanism dominated by surface atom diffusion rather than Ostwald ripening. Further research in this area could lead to the development of improved methods to prevent sintering and enhance the stability of nanocrystals, ultimately contributing to the advancement of nanomaterial-based devices and materials with long-lasting performance.

Abstract:Inorganic or organic solid supported metal nanostructures have been attracted intensive interests in recent years. In this study, a novel and versatile approach for the preparation of solid supported silver nanocomposites is presented for the first time. In this method, the modified aldehyde groups on solid supporters are employed to reduce Ag[(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions. The in situ reduced silver nucleus are directly coated on the surfaces of the supports and then used as both seeds and catalysts for the self-catalytic growth of Ag NPs. In this reaction, no additional reduction and protective agents are needed. Moreover, the size of the Ag NPs can be tuned by varying the concentration of the Ag[(NH 3 ) 2 ] + ions and the reaction time, which leads to the interesting change of the localized surface plasmon resonance absorption of the NPs. Such a synthesis method may realize the separation of nucleation and growth stages for the formation of Ag NPs and is proved to be a versatile method for the preparation of solid supported Ag nanocomposites (PS–Ag, Fe 3 O 4 –Ag, and SiO 2 –Ag), which would benefit the preparations and further applications of functional materials in near future.

Abstract:We present a novel method to synthesize complex nanostructured films through oriented connection of nanoparticles under an external electric field. Silver is taken as an example to validate the feasibility of this fabrication approach. The building blocks of the prepared silver films are able to be adjusted from nanoparticle to nanoflower, nanoplate, nanoslat, dendrite, and so forth, by either varying the deposition current density or changing the electrode. The obtained Ag complex structures show high SERS sensitivity. Importantly, this method can be extended to fabricate complex nanostructures of other materials, such as Cu2O. Further study of this new fabrication method may supply a simple and green method to realize various complicated nanostructures of different materials. The mechanism investigation is also important in understanding the assembly behavior of nanoparticles in the colloid under an external electric filed.
Fabrication and Optical Properties of Controlled Ag Nanostructures for Plasmonic Applications

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles exhibit unique plasmon resonances compared to bulk metal that depends on the nanoparticle size, shape, and interparticle distance. Towards this goal, the paper describes a simple and low-cost method for producing large area arrays of ordered silver nanoparticles with morphologies such as dots, rings, and bowls, based on the nanosphere lithography by combining evaporation and sputtering techniques. Pronounced, we demonstrate here a facile fabrication strategy that nanosphere monolayer could serve as a sacrificial mask access to generate silver nanobowl arrays. The experimental and simulated results show that the Ag nanodot arrays exhibit a satisfactory surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy effect and adjustable frequency. These approaches will surely facilitate further exploration of metal nanostructures for applications in nanoscale optical sensors.
Tailoring Film Agglomeration for Preparation of Silver Nanoparticles with Controlled Morphology

Abstract:Thin metal films can disintegrate into nanoparticles upon thermal annealing. In this work, to obtain silver nanoparticles with controlled morphology, we performed a comparison study on the surface topography evolutions and agglomeration mechanisms of Ag films deposited by magnetron sputtering within-situ annealing (the heating rate is 0.33°C/s) and ex-situ rapid thermal annealing (the heating rate is 100°C/s) treatments, respectively. The results confirm that the in-situ annealed Ag films agglomerate via voids nucleation followed by the fractal growth of voids. Moreover, we found that the critical void radius upon which the void growth is favored decreases with increasing the annealing temperature. For the case of rapid annealing, the agglomeration of Ag films follows the grain boundary grooving mechanism due to the rather higher heating rate. Compared with the in-situ heating process, the rapid annealing treatment allows a more uniform size distribution of the nanoparticles. Our findings highlight the key role of heating rate on the size, shape and functionalities of Ag nanoparticles for a wide range of practical applications, and enrich the understandings of the agglomeration mechanism of thin metal films.

Abstract:Photochemical synthesis of metal nanostructures through photosensitized reduction of metal sources is a powerful method in a wide variety of environments, because light can selectively promote the desired reaction without damaging the surrounding environment. A drawback of the method is that most organic photosensitizers are disposable and consumed during the photochemical reactions and as a consequence a much larger amount of photosensitizer than that of the metal source is usually required, and therefore, the photosensitized reduction method is wasteful in terms of the sensitizer. In the present work, we propose a new photochemical synthetic method using a recyclable photosensitizer and applied it to fabricate Ag nanostructures at the solid-liquid interface. The photosensitized reduction of Ag ion at the solid-liquid interface resulted in the formation of unique Ag nanostructures (nanowires or plates) without the use of templates or stabilizing agents. The relation between the morphology and several external contributing factors, such as solvent polarity and interaction between the substrate and crystal phase, was discussed.

Abstract:Controlled deposition of metal nanostructures on various substrates is highly desirable for electronics, photonics, sensing and catalysis. A laser focused beam has been used to deposit metal nanoparticles and nanostructures based on optical forces with diffraction-limited spatial resolution. We demonstrate fabrication of nanostructured silver wires, spots and wire arrays by using a confocal microscope setup, offering highly reproducible nanostructured silver growth and pattern writing. Particularly, laser-deposited silver micro-wires show adjustable electronic conductivities. Taking into accounts the superior spatial resolution and versatile pattern design, this technique is promising for a variety of applications such as microelectronics and bio-chips.
