Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery
Abstract:Air cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have received widespread attention from researchers as an ideal clean energy technology for generating power by degrading biomass. However, the power generation attributed to biomass's conversion efficiency in these MFCs is principally restricted by the cathode's oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this paper, conductive metal–organic framework (MOF) based on 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) with different metal centers, such as Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, and Mn, was prepared as the cathode catalyst of the MFC. Combining the operation and multi-faceted material characterization analysis, Cu-HHTP was the optimal catalyst for the air cathode MFC. The three-dimensional coralline structure of Cu-HHTP exhibits high ORR capability for providing many electrochemical active sites that reduce charge transfer resistance, accelerating the electron transfer rate. The maximum output power density of the assembled Cu-HHTP air cathode MFC is 206.67 mW m− 2 , and the stable voltage output reaches approximately 275 mV over multiple test cycles, which is 2.25 times higher than that of the blank carbon cloth (CC). This research opens up new paths for designing conductive MOF materials as ORR catalysts and their application as MFC cathode catalysts.
