We show that any nonnegative integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z)$ with $x+y+z+w$ a square (or a cube). Also, every $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ can be represented by $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ $(x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z)$ with $x+2y+2z$ a square (or a cube).

Abstract:Lagrange's four-square theorem asserts that any n∈N={0,1,2,…} can be written as the sum of four squares. This can be further refined in various ways. We show that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈Z such that x+y+z (or x+2y, or x+y+2z) is a square (or a cube). We also prove that any n∈N can be written as x2+y2+z2+w2 with x,y,z,w∈N such that P(x,y,z) is a square, whenever P(x,y,z) is among the polynomialsx,2x,x−y,2x−2y,a(x2−y2)(a=1,2,3),x2−3y2,3x2−2y2,x2+ky2(k=2,3,5,6,8,12),(x+4y+4z)2+(9x+3y+3z)2,x2y2+y2z2+z2x2,x4+8y3z+8yz3,x4+16y3z+64yz3. Abstract:We refine Lagrange’s four-square theorem in new ways by imposing some restrictions involving powers of two (including [Formula: see text]). For example, we show that each [Formula: see text] can be written as [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text], or [Formula: see text]), and that we can write any positive integer as [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] (or [Formula: see text]) a power of four. Abstract:In this paper we establish some new results similar to Lagrange's four-square theorem. For example, we prove that any integer $n>1$ can be written $w(5w+1)/2+x(5x+1)/2+y(5y+1)/2+z(5z+1)/2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. Here we state two general results: (1) If $a$ and $b$ are odd integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$\frac{w(aw+b)}2+\frac{x(ax+b)}2+\frac{y(ay+b)}2+\frac{z(az+b)}2$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers. (2) If $a$ and $b$ are integers with $a>0$, $b>-a$, $2\mid a$ and $\gcd(a,b)=1$, then all sufficient large integers can be written as $$w(aw+b)+x(ax+b)+y(ay+b)+z(az+b)$$ with $w,x,y,z$ nonnegative integers.

Abstract:The well-known Lagrangeu0027s four-square theorem states that any integer $ninmathbb{N}={0,1,2,...}$ can be written as the sum of four squares. Recently, Z.-W. Sun investigated the representations of $n$ as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with certain linear restrictions involving the integer variables $x,y,z,w$. In this paper, via the theory of quadratic forms, we further study the representations $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ (resp., $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$) with certain linear restrictions involving primes. For example, we obtain the following results: (i) Each positive integer $nu003e1$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+y$ prime. (ii) Every positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+2y$ prime. (iii) Let $k$ be any positive integer, and let $dge 2^{k-1}$ be an odd integer with $4d^2+1$ prime. Then any sufficiently large integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ $(x,y,z,winmathbb N)$ with $x+2dy=p^k$ for some prime $p$.

Abstract: This paper discuss an intrinsic relation among congruent relations \cite{CLPZ}, cyclotomic expansion and Volume Conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants. Motivated by the congruent relations for $SU(n)$ invariants obtained in our previous work \cite{CLPZ}, we study certain limits of the $SU(n)$ invariants at various roots of unit. First, we prove a new symmetry property for the $SU(n)$ invariants by using a symmetry of colored HOMFLYPT invariants. Then we propose some conjectural formulas including the cyclotomic expansion conjecture and volume conjecture for $SU(n)$ invariants (specialization of colored HOMFLYPT invariants). We also give the proofs of these conjectural formulas for the case of figure-eight knot.
The S^1 Fixed Points in Quot-schemes and Mirror Principle Computations

Abstract:We describe the S 1 -action on the Quot-scheme Quot(E n ) associated to the trivial bundle E n = CP 1 × C n . In particlular, the topology of the S 1 -fixed-point components in Quot(E n ) and the S 1 -weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S 1 fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the S 1 -fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S 1 -equivariant Euler class eS1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down eS1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly study sums of four rational squares with certain restrictions. Let Q≥0 be the set of nonnegative rational numbers. We establish the following four-square theorem for rational numbers: For any a, b, c, d ∈ Q≥0, each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as x 2 + y+z+w with x, y, z, w ∈ Q≥0 such that ax+by+cz+dw is a rational square (or a rational cube). This paper also contains many conjectures; for example, for any positive integers a and b with gcd(a, b) = 1, we conjecture that each r ∈ Q≥0 can be written as aw + bx +y+ z with w, x, y, z ∈ Q.

Abstract:Generalized octagonal numbers are those p8(x)=x(3x−2) with x∈Z. In this paper we show that every positive integer can be written as the sum of four generalized octagonal numbers one of which is odd. This result is similar to Lagrange's theorem on sums of four squares. Moreover, for 35 triples (b,c,d) with 1⩽b⩽c⩽d (including (2,3,4) and (2,4,8)), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be expressed as p8(w)+bp8(x)+cp8(y)+dp8(z) with w,x,y,z∈Z. We also pose several conjectures for further research.

Abstract:AbstractIn some recent investigations involving certain differential operators for a general family of Lagrange polynomials, Chan el al. encountered and proved a certain summation identity for the Lagrange polynomials in several variables. In the present paper, we derive some generalizations of this summation identity for the Chan-Chyan-Srivastava polynomials in several variables. We also discuss a number of interesting corollaries and consequences of our main results.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:Let p be an odd prime. We show that each solution of the system of congruence equations x12+x22+x32+x42≡0(modp) and x1+x2+x3+x4≡0(modp) corresponds to precisely four solutions of the system of Diophantine equations x12+x22+x32+x42=p2 and x1+x2+x3+x4=p that are pairwise orthogonal over Z, partially answering a conjecture proposed in Wang et al. [10]. The result was obtained by counting the number of solutions of both equations using Gaussian sum and modular forms, and the classical Cayley transformation.

Abstract:The 1-3-5 conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that any $n\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+3y+5z$ is a square. In this paper, via the theory of ternary quadratic forms and related modular forms, we study the integer version of the 1-3-5 conjecture and related weighted sums of four squares with certain linear restrictions. Here are two typical results in this paper: (i) There is a finite set $A$ of positive integers such that any sufficiently large integer not in the set $\{16^ka:\ a\in A,\ k\in\mathbb N\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+3y+5z\in\{4^k:\ k\in\mathbb N\}$. (ii) Any positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+y+2z+2w=1$. Also, any sufficiently large integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+2y+3z=1$.
Generalizing Hurwitz's quaternionic proof of Lagrange's and Jacobi's four-square theorems

Abstract:A proof of Lagrange's and Jacobi's four-square theorem due to Hurwitz utilizes orders in a quaternion algebra over the rationals. Seeking a generalization of this technique to orders over number fields, we identify two key components: an order with a good factorization theory and the condition that all orbits under the action of the group of elements of norm $1$ acting by multiplication intersect the suborder corresponding to the quadratic form to be studied. We use recent results on class numbers of quaternion orders and then find all suborders satisfying the orbit condition. Subsequently, we obtain universality and formulas for the number of representations by the corresponding quadratic forms. We also present a quaternionic proof of Götzky's four-square theorem.

Abstract:In this paper we present a variety of statements that are in the spirit of the famous theorem of Pascal, often referred to as the Mystic Hexagon. We give explicit equations describing the conditions for $d+4$ points to lie on rational normal curves. A collection of problems of Pascal type are considered for quadric surfaces in $\bbP^3$. Finally we reprove, using computer algebra methods, a remarkable theorem of Richmond, Segre, and Brown, for quadrics in $\bbP^4$ containing five general lines.
