Abstract:A stable and conductive composite material based on NH4PO3 and amorphous oxides (SiO2–P2O5) has been prepared by a wet-chemical route following with firing in ammonia. The composite showed high proton conductivity in both ambient air and humidified 5% H2/Ar. A total conductivity of 6.0–19mS/cm in the temperature range of 150–250°C has been achieved. The conductivity (about 19mS/cm) is stable in humidified 5% H2/Ar during ageing at 175°C for over 100h. This material is a potential electrolyte for intermediate temperature fuel cells and other electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Molten carbonate fuel cells have been commercialized as a mature technology. Due to the liquid electrolyte in molten carbonate fuel cells, gas seal and low contact resistance are easier to achieve than in other fuel cells. Herein, we report an investigation of the viability of a molten oxoacid salt as a novel type of fuel cell electrolyte. In comparison with molten carbonate electrolytes for MCFCs that operate at 500-700 °C, for which a ceramic support matrix is required, the molten proton conductor electrolyte has a lower working temperature range of 150-250 °C. The present study has shown that an electrolyte membrane, in which molten CsH5(PO4)2 is held in a matrix made of PBI polymer and SiO2 powder, has excellent thermal stability, good mechanical properties, and high proton conductivity. In addition, a molten proton conductor fuel cell equipped with such an electrolyte membrane operating at 200 °C showed an open-circuit voltage of 1.08 V, and a stable output voltage during continuous measurement for 150 h at a constant output current density of 100 mA cm-2.

Abstract:In Section 2.3, paragraph 2, the first sentence should read: “Comparing the results (Figure 5), the membranes all has a qmax value of near 2.25 nm−1.” The qmax value is 2.25 nm−1 rather than 3.25 nm−1. SAXS profiles of PVDF/PEO/DBS-H membranes at room temperature. In the Experimental Section, paragraph 3, the fifth sentence should read: “The scattering patterns were integrated to generate an I vs q curve, where I is the intensity of scattered X-rays and q is the scattering vector r, q is calculated from scattering angle θ and the wavelength of the X-ray beam λ by the equation q= 4πsin (θ)/λ.” The remaining two sentences of that paragraph should be disregarded. Figure 5 in the original manuscript should be replaced by the new version of Figure 5 shown below. Figure 5 in the published article is the relation between scattering intensity and the scattering angle, rather than q [calculated as q=4πsin (θ)/λ], due to an oversight by the author. Abstract:A new proton-conductive composite of NH4PO3–(NH4)2Mn(PO3)4 was synthesized and characterized as a potential electrolyte for intermediate temperature fuel cells that operated around 250°C. Thermal gravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction investigation showed that (NH4)2Mn(PO3)4 was stable as a supporting matrix for NH4PO3. The composite conductivity, measured using impedance spectroscopy, improved with increasing the molar ratio of NH4PO3 in both dry and wet atmospheres. A conductivity of 7mScm−1 was obtained at 250°C in wet hydrogen. Electromotive forces measured by hydrogen concentration cells showed that the composite was nearly a pure protonic conductor with hydrogen partial pressure in the range of 102–105Pa. The proton transference number was determined to be 0.95 at 250°C for 2NH4PO3–(NH4)2Mn(PO3)4 electrolyte. Fuel cells using 2NH4PO3–(NH4)2Mn(PO3)4 as an electrolyte and the Pt–C catalyst as an electrode were fabricated. Maximum power density of 16.8mW/cm2 was achieved at 250°C with dry hydrogen and dry oxygen as the fuel and oxidant, respectively. However, the NH4PO3–(NH4)2Mn(PO3)4 electrolyte is not compatible with the Pt–C catalyst, indicating that it is critical to develop new electrode materials for the intermediate temperature fuel cells.
