Abstract:Although self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces have .aroused much attention due to their repairable wetting properties and wide applications, the realization of dual healing of both microstructure and surface chemistry remains challenging. Herein, we develop a novel superhydrophobic surface composed of a shape memory micropillar array decorated by pH-responsive capsules encapsulated with fluoroalkylsilane. Owing to the shape memory effect of micropillar and the encapsulated surface chemistry healing agent fluoroalkylsilane, the obtained surface can not only repair the damaged surface chemistry after acid stimuli, but also restore the crushed surface microstructures by heat.

Abstract:Hydrogels with outstanding mechanical performance, self-healing capacity, and special functionality are highly desirable for their practical applications. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve such hydrogels by a facile approach. Here, we report a new type of nanocomposite hydrogels by in situ copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) using alumina nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) as the cross-linkers. The obtained hydrogels are highly stretchable and compressible, which could sustain large-scale extension (>1700%) or compression (90%) without failure, and exhibit tensile and compressive strength up to 660 kPa and 8.3 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, this kind of hydrogel also display considerable self-healing capacity due to their noncovalent cross-linking mechanism, as well as the hydrogen-bonding interactions between polymer chains. More interestingly, it was found that the resultant gels possess a long-lasting antifogging property that could prevent the formation of fog on the glass plate above hot water for at least 90 min. It is expected that this novel type of hydrogel would show great promise for various applications, including soft robots, artificial muscles, and optical devices.

Abstract:Rapid self-healing of micro-configurations is an effective strategy to enhance the durability of superhydrophobic surfaces, however, this property is challenging to achieve. Here, a durable superhydrophobic coating with a precisely targeted self-healing ability to repair its' dual structure was developed by spray-coating a polyimine film with a mixture of novel fluorinated epoxy resin and Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 nanoparticles. The superhydrophobic surface can heal both the broken morphology and wettability through a short irradiation process on account of its local photothermal conversion ability and dynamic imine bond, and can maintain the static water contact angle at a value higher than 159° even after six damage/healing cycles. Furthermore, superhydrophobic coatings can be controllably degraded in three ways. Additionally, because of the robust epoxy resin protection, the surface can withstand sixteen times the dynamic impact and still maintain a WCA greater than 150°. This preparation strategy may aid the fabrication of durable superhydrophobic surfaces for various practical applications.

Abstract:The superhydrophobic strain sensor is a fantastic direction which could protect the strain sensor in harsh environment. Nevertheless, the self-healing superhydrophobic strain sensor has not been reported. In this research, we developed a superhydrophobic strain sensor which demonstrated excellent self-healing, mechanical robustness, and liquid impalement resistance simultaneously. The key innovation is to partially embed hydrophobic graphene and carbon nanotubes into the hydrogel matrix. The hodrogel substrate endows the sample with self-healing property. The graphene, carbon nanotubes and hydrogel together lead to an accurate and real-time monitoring of human motion. Furthermore, the prepared sample demonstrated super-robust superhydrophobicity, which retained superhydrophobicity after many kinds of damage (such as 1000% stretch, 10000 stretching-releasing cycles, hand-rub, tape-peeling, and high-speed drop/jet impact).This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Lightweight aerogels with elastic performance and tunable surface properties have made them a good alternative for smart electornic skin. However, the aerogels remain a great barrier for sensing applications because of their severe brittleness and difficult regulation of surface property. Herein, we report a superelastic aerogel originated from a rational designed waterborne poly(siloxane-benzoxazine) by using the ice template method. The three-dimensional (3D) network is constructed via the radical crosslinking and ring-opening polymerization followed by the freeze-drying process. Moreover, it also shows pronounced mechanical performance that can be compressed over 70% and recover without fracture. Beyond that, its surface property could be altered from highly hydrophilic to hydrophobic property (145° water contact angle) by adjusting the crosslinking degree of the aerogel under different curing temperatures. We further demonstrate a pressure sensor by in situ polymerization of the aniline (PANI) on the surface of the aerogel. Abstract:Self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted considerable attention for enhancing the durability of superhydrophobic coatings, which have applications in various fields. However, it is difficult to find safe and effective strategies for self-healing superhydrophobic coatings to recover both microstructure and surface chemistry simultaneously. Herein, we demonstrate a high-efficiency self-healing hydrophobic surface with remote control ability. Through near infrared light (NIR) irradiation, the collapsed surface microstructure and altered surface chemistry can be recovered easily and simultaneously in a very short period. The extraordinary performance is fully discussed and can be attributed to the excellent photothermal properties of candle soot (CS). In addition, the surface demonstrates repeatable self-healing ability thanks to the good shape memory of the epoxy-based shape memory polymer (SMP) and the continued release of fluorinated alkyl silane encapsulated in microcapsules. The presented surface shows great potential and broad impacts owing to its simplicity and efficiency.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces show promise in a wide variety of potential applications that require self-cleaning, antifogging, anti-icing, anticorrosion, and antifouling properties. However, these surfaces often exhibit poor durability against physical or chemical damage, such as deep cut, ultraviolet irradiation, and oxygen plasma treatment. Superhydrophobic surfaces with self-repairing properties have been recently developed to overcome these durability issues. The recent progress in the fabrication and characteristics of self-repairing superhydrophobic surfaces, including chemical component, physical structure, and combined repair is summarized. The application of these superhydrophobic surfaces is also described. The critical limitations regarding self-repairing surfaces are highlighted and perspectives on future development are discussed.

Superelastic Polymer Aerogel with Superamphiphilicity

Abstract:Elastic aerogels have become a research hot spot in both academia and industry recently. The reported elastic aerogels are all made of hard materials by controlling their shapes. Herein we report an elastic aerogel made of a polymer elastomer with entropy elasticity. In the aerogel, cross-linked carboxyl nitrile rubber nanoparticles with hydrophilicity are dispersed in hydrophobic derivative of styrene-maleic anhydride alternating copolymer, forming a very special micro-nano surface structure with hydrophilic protrusions and hydrophobic depressions on the aerogel wall; therefore, the aerogel is not only superelastic but also superamphiphilic. A leak-free phase-change composite was prepared using the aerogel and paraffin, which can maintain at phase change temperature of paraffin for a longer time than the traditional one. The aerogel is also extremely suitable for desalination evaporators in solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology due to its superamphiphilicity, superelasticity, and ability to absorb sunlight. Exceptional evaporation rate of 2.78 kg·m-2·h-1 and evaporation efficiency of 170% could be reached even without using expensive light-absorbing materials. The evaporation rate exceeds that of most evaporators with expensive light-absorbing materials, and the evaporation efficiency exceeds the theoretical limit of conventional 2D solar evaporators. Both the phase-change composite and the evaporator can be easily recovered because the novel superelastic aerogel reported in this work is also recyclable.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have already been applied in anti-fouling, water-oil separation, liquid transportation, etc. Surfaces can be defined as superhydrophobic surfaces once they can support a water droplet with its spherical shape maintained and accompanied by an apparent contact angle larger than 150° and a rolling-off angle below 10°. Such water repellent property is achieved by the synergetic action of hierarchical structures and the low-surface energy of the substances constructing the surface. Structures with high aspect ratio always perform good superhydrophobicity. However, they are usually with poor mechanical stability. Since durability is one of the essential factors for practical use, exploiting robust superhydrophobic surfaces has attracted tremendous interest. During the past decade, great effort has been made in developing self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces to improve the potential practice and broaden the application fields. An overview of the recent development of self-healing superhydrophobic surfaces is provided in this review. The focus here is particularly on the fabrication process based on specific healing mechanisms and possible applications. Finally, an outlook on future fabrication techniques for durable superhydrophobic surfaces is presented.

Abstract:The fragility of the micro-nano structure makes superhydrophobic coatings highly susceptible to stress, resulting in a decrease in their superhydrophobic and anti-icing performance. In this work, we proposed a new insight to improve durability by incorporating a thin layer of self-healable elastomer with a dynamic network on the micro-nano structure. We constructed superhydrophobic coatings (EP/SiO2/BFVSE) with a three-layered structure of the epoxy resin/silica nanoparticle/silicon elastomer. The silicon elastomer (BFVES) with a B-O dynamic cross-linked network and fluorinated moieties was synthesized by graft polymerization on vinyl silicon oil. The preparation route is facile and convenient for mass production. BFVES has rapid self-healing properties for scratches at room-temperature, underwater and at -18 °C. EP/SiO2/BFVSE preserved apparently higher CAs after being immersed in pH = 1, pH = 13, and NaCl solutions for 96 h as compared with the EP/SiO2 coating. In a water striking environment, the CA of EP/SiO2/BFVSE was slightly decreased to 153°. SEM images further reveal that the recovery of superhydrophobicity and icephobicity is attributed to the self-healing behavior of the boroxine-containing silicon elastomer. The EP/SiO2/BFVSE coating also possesses additional self-healing ability under chemical oxidation. The high durability of the self-healable superhydrophobic coating enables great application potential in aircraft, marine vessels, and outdoor facilities in harsh environments.
Self-Healing Underwater Superoleophobic and Anti-Biofouling Coatings Based on the Assembly of Hierarchical Microgel Spheres.

Abstract:Marine biofouling has been plaguing people for thousands of years. While various strategies have been developed to antifouling (including superoleophobic) coatings, none of these exhibits self-healing property because the bestowal of a zoetic self-repairing function to lifeless artificial water/solid interfacial materials is usually confronted with tremendous challenges. Here we present a self-repairing underwater superoleophobic and anti-biofouling coating through the self-assembly of hydrophilic polymeric chain modified hierarchical microgel spheres. The obtained surface material not only has excellent underwater superoleophobicity but also owns very good subaqueous anti-biofouling property. More importantly, this surface material can recover the oil- and biofouling- resistant properties once its surface is mechanically damaged, similar to the skins of some marine organisms such as sharks or whales. This approach is feasible and easily mass-produced, and could open a pathway and possibility for the fabrication of other self-healing functional water/solid interfacial materials.

Abstract:Self-healing superhydrophobic coatings have attracted tremendous attention recently, although their practical applications are severely limited by hydrophobic instability and poor structure durability. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic coating was fabricated by a rapid micro/nano structural reconstruction strategy. Carbon nanofibers (CNF) with high aspect ratio were interspersed in fluorosilicone resin (FSR) to construct a uniform network structure. By combining with temperature-responsive carnauba wax (CW) and modified fluororubber (MFR), we obtained a superhydrophobic FSR/CNF/CW/MFR coating with a water contact angle (WCA) of 157 ± 1.2° and water sliding angle (WSA) of 4.5 ± 0.4°. Under the triple synergy of polymer segment migration of FSR, temperature-responsive phase transition of CW, and elastomer rebound repair of MFR, the damaged FSR/CNF/CW/MFR coating surface was rapidly reformed to a new hierarchical micro/nanostructure with short heat treatment (less than 120 s). As a result, for a flat surface, after 1000 abrasion cycles or falling ball impact, a rich micro/nano structure was rapidly reconstructed and superhydrophobic properties were restored. The reconstructed micro/nano multistage structure could effectively capture air, which led to the repaired area exhibiting a charming silver mirror effect and excellent self-cleaning performance. Therefore, this work is expected to provide new insight into the restoration of micro/nanostructures of durable superhydrophobic coatings.

Comparative of diatom frustules, diatomite, and silica particles for constructing self-healing superhydrophobic materials with capacity for thermal energy storage

Abstract:Introducing the capability of self-healing to superhydrophobic materials is an effective strategy for improving their durability. This study examined self-healing superhydrophobic coatings based on diatom frustules and paraffin wax, and systematically compared coatings based on diatom frustules with those prepared by using diatomite and synthesized silica. The diatom frustules had a much higher specific surface area (214.38 m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.97 cm 3 /g) than diatomite and synthesized silica, and thus only diatom frustule can provide sufficient micro/nanoscale roughness and adsorb a large number of low-surface-energy, healing agent paraffin wax to achieve self-healable superhydrophobicity. The superhydrophobic coatings thus obtained demonstrated the capability for repeated self-healing after heat treatment at 80 °C for 10 min when subjected to water jet-induced impact for 30 min as well as corrosion in 1 M NaOH and 1 M HCl for 4 h. As much as 60.66 % of paraffin wax was stored in the diatom frustules without leakage, much higher than the amounts in diatomite and synthesized silica. This helped ensure good thermal storage performance, with a melting enthalpy of 132.2 J/g and a freezing enthalpy of 127.9 J/g. Once equipped with the capacity for storing thermal energy, self-healing superhydrophobic materials can be used in a variety of applications that require thermal management, such as electronic devices, intelligent flexible textiles, and energy-efficient and self-cleaning buildings.

Abstract:The paper reports a novel approach to achieve self-healing surface hydrophobicity. Mesoporous silica is used as the reservoir for hydrophobic molecules, i.e., octadecylamine (ODA), that can release and refresh the surface hydrophobicity consecutively. A polymdopamine layer is used to further encapsulate silica-ODA, providing a reactive layer, governing release of the underlying ODA, and improving the dispersivity of silica nanoparticles in bulk resin. The approach arrives at self-healing (super)hydrophobicity without using any fluoro-containing compounds.
Robust Superhydrophobic Composite Fabric with Self-Healing and Chemical Durability

Abstract:Superhydrophobic fabrics with multiple functions have become a research hotspot. However, it is challenging to make self-healing mechanically robust and eco-friendly superhydrophobic fabrics, which are limited by complex fabrication processes and excessive use of environmentally unfriendly solvents during fabrication. Herein, inspired by the secretion of a waxy substance from the surface of lotus leaves to restore water repellency, self-healing superhydrophobic composite fabrics (as-synthesized PA66/6-PET@Tico) are obtained by constructing a papillary TiO2 and tentacle-like fluorinated acrylate polymer (FCB015) coating on polyester-nylon composite fabrics using two-step hydrothermal method. The result indicates that PA66/6-PET@Tico with hierarchical micro/nanostructure exhibits excellent superhydrophobic and self-healing properties. Compared with FCB015 coated fabric, the contact angles (CA) of water and soybean oil rise to 172.2° and 166.8° from 137.4° and 98.8°, respectively. After mechanical abrasion, PA66/6-PET@Tico recovers a water contact angle (WCA) of 165.6° at room temperature. The WCA remains higher than 155° after 18 h of chemical corrosion. Furthermore, the bacterial inhibition rates of PA66/6-PET@Tico for Staphylococcus Aureus and Escherichia Coli are 99.90 and 98.38%, respectively. In this work, a new idea is proposed for designing a simple and effective self-healing superhydrophobic coating, expecting to promote the large-scale industrial production and application of functional surfaces.

Abstract:Synthetic materials capable of self-healing when damaged have attracted increasing attention and have been developing rapidly because of their many potential applications. Despite great achievements, there is an urgent need to advance the mechanical properties and reduce the time for healing simultaneously because of limited branch functionality and poor polymer mobility. Here, we report robust and smart hydrogels prepared using multi-vinyl-modified gold nanoparticles through a thiolate-gold coordination interaction as large crosslinkers. As a result of efficient energy dissipation from dynamic gold crosslinks with enhanced branching, hydrogels exhibit excellent elasticity with increased mechanical strength at high elongation, even when notched. Combined with thiolate-gold interaction as a healing motif and a notable optothermal effect of nanoparticles, hydrogels deliver rapid self-healing with optimal efficiency of nearly 96% under near-infrared irradiation in 1 min. These properties may shed light on promising applications for this kind of hydrogel in biomedicine and engineering.

Abstract:Polluted water is a worldwide problem; therefore, effective separation of oil/water and removal of dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals in wastewater are the need of the hour. Herein, hydrophilic β-cyclodextrin-grafted carboxymethyl cellulose, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol, and chitosan were used as main raw materials to construct a multifunctional aerogel framework by simple sol–gel and directional freeze-drying methods. Featuring intrinsic superamphiphilic wettability in air, robust superoleophobic wettability underwater, and excellent shape-recovery characteristics, the biomass-derived aerogel presents durable oil/water separation even after 10 cycles. The aerogels possess prominent adsorption capacity for methyl blue, 1-naphthylamine, and Cu2+, which was as high as 121.55 mg/g, 33.96 mg/g, and 122.6 mg/g, respectively. Silica Aerogels with Self-Reinforced Microstructure for Bioinspired Hydrogels

Abstract:Aerogel is a kind of high-performance lightweight open-porous solids with ultralow density, high specific surface area, and broad application in many emerging fields including biotechnology, energy, environment, aerospace, etc. A giant challenge remains in preventing of the hydrophilic aerogel framework shrinkage when replacing of solvent with air in its extremely abundant nanosized pores during its fabrication process in ambient conditions. In this work, started from a linear polymeric precursor with further condensation reaction, superhydrophilic silica aerogels with self-reinforced microstructure and the least volume shrinkage have been successfully obtained via ambient pressure drying process without use of any additives in the presence of a low surface tension solvent. The resulting superhydrophilic silica aerogels possess specific surface area up to 1065 m2/g, pore volume up to 2.17 cm3/g and density down to 84 mg/cm3, and these values are comparable to those of their counterparts obtained by supercritical CO2 drying process. Moreover, as an application demonstration, the bioinspired hydrogels with desirable mechanical flexibility and adhesive performance at extremely harsh environment (e.g., below −50 °C) have been successfully synthesized by mimicking carrier of a functional bioagent with the resulting superhydrophilic silica aerogel microparticles. Abstract:Bioinspired structurally colored materials with superwettability have aroused considerable interest, but it is still a formidable challenge to produce large‐scale superhydrophobic photonic materials with high mechanical durability. Herein, a superhydrophobic photonic composite with angle‐independent structural colors and self‐healing capability is reported, by embedding photonic glass on a healable supramolecular polymer with hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane segments. Superhydrophobicity of the composite originates from the migration of the supramolecular polymer around the photonic glass pigments with micro–nano structure. This superhydrophobic characteristic has long‐term stability that can maintain for months. Based on the self‐cleaning property, nonwettability and vivid angle‐independent structural colors, the composite can be applied as large‐area antifouling and coloring coatings. Moreover, the reversible hydrogen bonds endow the composite with self‐healing ability and mechanical durability properties, which is crucial to practical applications as biomimetic decorative materials and wearable devices.

Abstract:A superelastic aerogel with fast shape recovery performance from large compressive strain is highly desired for numerous applications such as thermal insulation in clothing, high-sensitive sensors, and oil contaminant removal. Fabrication of superelastic cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) aerogels is challenging as the CNF can assemble into non-elastic sheet-like cell walls. Here, a dual ice-templating assembly (DITA) strategy is proposed that can control the assembly of CNF into sub-micrometer fibers by extremely low temperature freezing (–196 °C), which can further assemble into an elastic aerogel with interconnected sub-micron fibers by freezer freezing (−20 °C) and freeze drying. The CNF aerogel from the DITA process demonstrates isotropic superelastic behavior that can recover from over 80% compressive strain along both longitudinal and cross-sectional directions, even in an extremely cold liquid nitrogen environment. The elastic CNF aerogel can be easily modified by chemical vapor deposition of organosilane, demonstrating superhydrophobicity (164° water contact angle), high liquid absorption (489 g g−1 of chloroform absorption capacity), self-cleaning, thermal insulating (0.023 W (mK)−1), and infrared shielding properties. This new DITA strategy provides a facile design of superelastic aerogels from bio-based nanomaterials, and the derived high performance multifunctional elastic aerogel is expected to be useful for a wide-range of applications.
