Abstract:Near-field microscopy is widely used for characterizing electromagnetic fields at nanoscale, where nanoprobes afford the opportunity to extract subwavelength optical quantities, including the amplitude, phase, polarization, chirality, etc. However, owing to the complexity of various nanoprobes, a general and intuitive theory is highly desired to assess the vectorial responses of nanoprobes and interpret the mechanism of the probe-field interaction. Here, we develop a general imaging theory based on the reciprocity of electromagnetism and multipole expansion analysis. The proposed theory closely resembles the multipolar Hamiltonian for light-matter interaction energy, revealing the coupling mechanism of the probe-field interaction. Based on this theory, we introduce a new paradigm for the design of functional nanoprobes by analyzing the reciprocal dipole moments, and establish effective design principles for the imaging of vectorial near fields. As application examples of the proposed theory, we numerically analyze the responses of two typical probes, a split-ring probe and a nanoparticle probe, which can quantitatively reproduce and well explain the experimental results of previously reported measurements of the optical magnetism and the transverse spin angular momentum. Our work provides a powerful tool for the design and analysis of new functional probes that may enable the probing of various physical quantities of the vectorial near field.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.
Application of Vector Phase Retrieval Model in High Numerical Aperture Optical Systems

Abstract:Phase retrieval (PR) technology can reconstruct the complex amplitude information of the entrance pupil surface from the captured defocus intensity images, and has been successfully applied in many scientific fields such as astronomical observation, biomedical imaging and digital signal restoration. For low numerical aperture (NA) optical systems, the point spread function (PSF) can be calculated using the Fresnel diffraction propagation theory based on Fourier transform, ignoring the polarization field of the light field. However, for high-NA systems, the focal spot not only includes the transverse component, but also the longitudinal component accounts for a proportion that cannot be ignored, thus necessitating a vector model when calculating the PSF in the non-paraxial region. In this paper, the vector diffraction calculation model with arbitrary defocus distance based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike (ENZ) theory is established, which can characterize the light field components in three directions under the Cartesian coordinate system. What's more, a modified Gauss-Newton theory is innovatively applied to the axial phase difference PR model. Compared with the traditional first-order algorithm, the second-order algorithm can reduce the number of iterations. In addition, so as to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, numerical simulations matching the physical model are carried out, the results show that the proposed method can accurately reconstruction the wavefront with high robustness. In conclusion, the established vector PR model in this paper would provide a creatively guidance for wavefront measurement of high-NA optical systems that is significant in the fields of semiconductor lithography, micro imaging and micro manipulation.

Abstract:Recent advances in electromagnetic nonreciprocity raise the question of how to engineer the nonreciprocal electromagnetic response with geometrical approaches. In this Letter, we examine this problem by introducing generalized electromagnetic continua consisting structured points, which carry extra degrees of freedom over coordinate transformation. We show that general nonreciprocal media have a unique time-varying Riemannian metric structure with local spinning components. It is demonstrated that the nonreciprocity can be alternatively identified as the torsion tensor of a Riemann-Cartan space, which could provide analytic expressions for the magneto-optical effect and the axionic magnetoelectric coupling. Our theory not only gives a deeper insight into the fundamental understanding of electromagnetic nonreciprocity but also provides a practical principle to geometrically design nonreciprocal devices through frame transformation.

Abstract:We present three-dimensional simulations of the image formation of microstructure in near-field optical microscopy with the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD). First, we calculated the intensity distributions inside and outside and the flux densities for both the tapered and parabolic fiber probes used in near-field optical microscope and nanolithography. The calculating result shows that for different kinds of shape the intensity distributions in both probes are similar and present standing wave forms; but the amplitudes and locations of peaks of the standing waves are different from each other. The intensity outward parabolic probe is higher than that outward tapered probe. Then we computed the intensity distributions of the samples which are composed of different materials by different polarization illumination. Assuming an aperture-type probe in collection-mode near-field microscope, we compare the images produced from the sample composed of three dielectric blocks in nanometer at a distance of 25nm and 150nm, respectively, under constant-high-scanning mode along with the direction of the polarization of the illuminating light, with near-field distribution of the sample without probe. The results show that the probe disturbs the original field distribution of the sample. The received signal is different from the original field distribution of the sample. However the received signal contains high frequency information of the sample in near-field region. Due to probe-sample interaction, parts of evanescent field transform into propagation wave. Only the interaction between the probe and sample in the near field makes possible to probe the high-frequency components and achieve the super-resolution. Therefore, the detected resolution depends on an assembly of the tip size, shape of the tip, distance between tip and sample, relative position and material characteristics of both tip and sample. These results provide the basis for correct interpretation of experimental work.

Abstract:This paper elaborates the near-field scanning and modeling technique developed for electromagnetic interference (EMI) analysis. The technique has been increasingly deployed in many R&D labs of universities and testing centers of industry companies due to its advantages in terms of time and cost, comparing with conventional EMI measurement methods. The major research works related to the near-field scanning and modeling are probe design and source reconstruction method (SRM). In this article, the working principle of electric and magnetic probes are firstly introduced. Probe parameters including calibration factor, electric center, sensitivity, spatial resolution and bandwidth are discussed. Next, the equivalent radiation source modeling approach is presented. Through SRM, a complex and unknown EMI source is substituted with the simplified equivalent radiation source based on the electromagnetic fields measured by magnetic and/or electric probes. The phaseless SRM is thereafter discussed for addressing the limitations in conventional SRM and its applications prove that the near-field scanning and modeling technique can effectively predict EMI far-field radiation and near-field coupling.

Abstract:A near-field optical virtual probe based on the principle of near-field evanescent wave interference can be used in optical data storage, nanolithography, near-field optical imaging, and optical manipulation. This letter gives the numerical simulation results of the optical distribution of a near-field virtual probe and analyzes the dependence of the virtual probe’s on the aperture, the polarization, etc. The simulation results reveal that the transmission efficiency is higher than that of a nanoaperture metal-coated fiber probe. The size of the virtual probe is constant when the distance between the lens and recording media increases within a certain range so that the critical nanoseparation control in near-field system can be relaxed.

Abstract:A systematic analytical approach to simulate the propagation of electromagnetic plane waves in multilayer anisotropic structures, where the layers can have arbitrary oriented optical axis, is presented. The explicit expressions for the vector polarizations of electric and magnetic fields inside a randomly oriented anisotropic medium are derived. The developed algorithm operates with analytic 4×4 matrices to calculate the transmission and reflection coefficients. This algorithm is suitable to investigate the near-field/far-field electromagnetic wave interaction at any angle of incidence for numerous intriguing applications. The procedure is applied to design anisotropic single and multilayer lenses for subwavelength imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, an electromagnetic probe is proposed for the near-field scanning. Its detection section is made of a miniature loop-wire hybrid structure, which can measure ${H} _{x}$ , ${H} _{y}$ , and ${E} _{\textit {z}}$ simultaneously. It is optimized to achieve a wide working band from 0.1 to 15 GHz. The calibration and measurement error of the probe are discussed in detail. The probe is fabricated as a four-layer printed circuit board (PCB) with the RO4350B dielectric. A near-field scanning system with the manufactured probe is set up to test the near fields above a Z-type microstrip line and an inverted-F antenna. By comparing the measurement and simulation results, the accuracy of the proposed multi-component probe is verified. It greatly improves the near-field scanning efficiency compared to the traditional single-component probe.

Abstract:Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a periodic (grating) structure. An inhomogeneous (subwavelength) object is placed inside the periodic structure. The scattering problem is to study the electromagnetic field distributions. The problem arises in the study of near-field optics and has many physical and biological applications. This work is devoted to modeling and analysis of a near-field optics problem. An integral representation approach is presented to solve the problem. It is shown particularly that the perturbation due to the object decays exponentially along the periodic direction of the structure, provided that no surface waves occur. Based on the approach, a general solution method is discussed and the well-posedness of the model problems are established.

Abstract:Electromagnetic interaction between a sub-wavelength particle (the `probe') and a material surface (the `sample') is studied theoretically. The interaction is shown to be governed by a series of resonances corresponding to surface polariton modes localized near the probe. The resonance parameters depend on the dielectric function and geometry of the probe, as well as the surface reflectivity of the material. Calculation of such resonances is carried out for several types of axisymmetric probes: spherical, spheroidal, and pear-shaped. For spheroids an efficient numerical method is developed, capable of handling cases of large or strongly momentum-dependent surface reflectivity. Application of the method to highly resonant materials such as aluminum oxide (by itself or covered with graphene) reveals a rich structure of multi-peak spectra and nonmonotonic approach curves, i.e., the probe-sample distance dependence. These features also strongly depend on the probe shape and optical constants of the model. For less resonant materials such as silicon oxide, the dependence is weak, so that the spheroidal model is reliable. The calculations are done within the quasistatic approximation with the radiative damping included perturbatively.

Design of Near-Field Optical Probes with Optimal Field Enhancement by Finite Difference Time Domain Electromagnetic Simulation

Abstract:We report the three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation of gold nanoparticles with specific geometries as a means to the rational design of apertureless near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) probes. Analytical solutions for field enhancement by spheroidal particles are used to provide physical insight for probe design. These solutions indicate that probes need to be not only sharp, but also finite in length in order to generate the highest field enhancement. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of gold particles illuminated by near infrared radiation are performed. Field enhancements for right trigonal pyramids are found to be size and wavelength dependent. Furthermore, the enhancements for these pyramidal particles are higher than for similar length conical particles, which in turn perform better than quasi-infinite conical probes. The particles we design with FDTD can be made using current nanofabrication techniques, and therefore hold great promise as apertureless NSOM probes. These right trigonal pyramids are particularly well suited for use in tip enhanced nonlinear optical microscopy or near-field Raman microscopy.

Abstract:In optical or microwave computational tomography, the sample permittivity is reconstructed numerically from the measurements of its scattered field for various illuminations. When the light sample interaction involves multiple scattering, the relationship between the scattered field and the permittivity is non-linear and a direct reconstruction is not possible. Using a simple physical approach, adapted to the three-dimensional vectorial electromagnetic framework, we derive an iterative inversion technique, based on the linearization of the scattering operator, for imaging (possibly anisotropic) targets in the multiple scattering regime. We investigate the performances of different approximations of this operator accounting for more or less multiple scattering. Our method is applied to the reconstruction of targets in the microwave domain using experimental data.
Probing Electromagnetic Nonreciprocity with Quantum Geometry of Photonic States

Abstract:Reciprocal and nonreciprocal effects in dielectric and magnetic materials provide crucial information about the microscopic properties of electrons. However, experimentally distinguishing the two has proven to be challenging, especially when the associated effects are extremely small. To this end, we propose a contact-less detection using a cross-cavity device where a material of interest is placed at its centre. We show that the optical properties of the material, such as Kerr and Faraday rotation, or, birefringence, manifest in the coupling between the cavities' electromagnetic modes and in the shift of their resonant frequencies. By calculating the dynamics of a geometrical photonic state, we formulate a measurement protocol based on the quantum metric and quantum process tomography that isolates the individual components of the material's complex refractive index and minimizes the quantum mechanical Cramér-Rao bound on the variance of the associated parameter estimation. Our approach is expected to be applicable across a broad spectrum of experimental platforms including Fock states in optical cavities, or, coherent states in microwave and THz resonators.

Abstract:Near-field scanning optical microscopy has been an indispensable tool for designing, characterizing and understanding the functionalities of diverse nanoscale photonic devices. As the advances in fabrication technology have driven the devices smaller and smaller, the demand has grown steadily for improving its resolving power, which is determined mainly by the size of the probe attached to the scanner. The use of a smaller probe has been a straightforward approach to increase the resolving power, but it cannot be made arbitrarily small in practice due to the steep reduction of the collection efficiency. Here, we develop a method to enhance the resolving power of near-field imaging beyond the limit set by the physical size of the probe aperture. The main working principle is to unveil high-order near-field eigenmodes invisible with conventional near-field microscopy. The destructive interference of near-field waves is induced in these high-order eigenmodes by the locally varying phases, which can reveal subaperture-scale fine structural details. To extract these eigenmodes, we construct a self-interference near-field microscopy system and measure a fully phase-referenced far- to near-field transmission matrix (FNTM) composed of near-field amplitude and phase maps recorded for various angles of far-field illumination. By the singular value decomposition of the measured FNTM, we could extract the antisymmetric mode, quadrupole mode, and other higher-order modes hidden under the lowest-order symmetric mode. This enables us to resolve double and triple nano-slots whose gap size (50 nm) is three times smaller than the diameter of the probe aperture (150 nm). The subaperture near-field mode mapping by the FTNM can be potentially combined with various existing near-field imaging modalities and promote their ability to interrogate local near-field optical waves of nanoscale devices.
Super-resolution 3D tomography of vector near-fields in dielectric resonators

Abstract:All-dielectric optical resonators, exhibiting exotic near-field distributions upon excitations, have emerged as low-loss, versatile and highly adaptable components in nanophotonic structures for manipulating electromagnetic waves and enhancing light-matter interactions. However, achieving experimental full three-dimensional characterization of near-fields within dielectric materials poses significant challenges. Here, we develop a novel technique using high-order sideband generation to image near-field wave patterns inside dielectric optical resonators. By exploiting the phase-sensitivity of various harmonic orders that enables the detection of near-field distributions at distinct depths, we realize three-dimensional tomographic and super-resolution near-field imaging inside a micrometer-thick silicon anapole resonator. Furthermore, our method offers high-contrast polarization sensitivity and phase-resolving capability, providing comprehensive vectorial near-field information. Our approach can potentially be applied to diverse dielectric metamaterials, and becomes a valuable tool for comprehensive characterization of near-field wave phenomena within dielectric materials.

Abstract:Evanescent waves, with their high energy density, intricate local momentum, and spatial distribution of spins, have been the subject of extensive recent study. These waves offer promising applications in near -field particle manipulation. Consequently, it becomes imperative to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of scattering and gradient forces on particles in evanescent waves to enhance and refine the manipulation capabilities. In this study, we employ the multipole expansion theory to present analytical expressions for the scattering and gradient forces exerted on an isotropic sphere of any size and composition in multiple evanescent waves. The investigation of these forces reveals several unusual optomechanical phenomena. It is well known that the scattering force does not exist in counter -propagating homogeneous plane waves. Surprisingly, in multiple pairs of counter -propagating evanescent waves, the scattering force can arise due to the nonzero orbital momentum (OM) density and/or the curl part of the imaginary Poynting momentum (IPM) density. More importantly, it is found that the optical scattering force can be switched on and off by simply tuning the polarization. Furthermore, optical forces typically vary with spatial position in an interference field. However, in the interference field generated by evanescent waves, the gradient force becomes a spatial constant in the propagating plane as the particle's radius increases. This is attributed to the decisive role of the non-interference term of the electromagnetic energy density gradient. Our study establishes a comprehensive and rigorous theoretical foundation, propelling the advancement and optimization of optical manipulation techniques harnessed through multiple evanescent waves. Specifically, these insights hold promise in elevating trapping efficiency through precise control and manipulation of optical scattering and gradient forces, stimulating further explorations. Abstract:Optical properties of natural or designed materials are determined by the electromagnetic multipole moments that light can excite in the constituent particles. In this work we present an approach to calculate the multipole excitations in arbitrary arrays of nanoscatterers in a dielectric host medium. We introduce a simple and illustrative multipole decomposition of the electric currents excited in the scatterers and link this decomposition to the classical multipole expansion of the scattered field. In particular, we find that completely different multipoles can produce identical scattered fields. The presented multipole theory can be used as a basis for the design and characterization of optical nanomaterials.
