Abstract:By using t-Se powders and NaOH as starting materials, t-Se aligned microrod bundles, microtubes and dendrites were successfully grown through a reversible chemical reacting process under hydrothermal conditions. It is found that the quantity of MnCl2·4H2O, which served as the antalkali agent to control the reversible reaction, plays important roles in the morphology control of the final t-Se products. The possible mechanism of the formation of different morphologies was briefly discussed.

Abstract:Trigonal Se( t-Se) nanotubes had been successfully synthesized through a phase transformation of amphorous Se( a-Se) spheres which were prepared by hydrothermal approach and subsequently sonicated in ethanol. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscope ( SEM) and X-ray powder diffractometer( XRD). SEM images show that the t-Se nanotubes are 150-300 nm in diameter,30-60 nm in thickness,and up to several micrometers in length. The effects of the ultrasononic time on the morphology of t-Se were discussed,and the growth mechanism of the t-Se nanotubes was analyzed.

Abstract:A facile and convenient chemical precipitation route has been developed for the controlled growth of selenium nanowires and hierarchical microspheres at room temperature, with Na2SeO3 and hydrazine hydrate as starting materials in the presence of 1,2,3‐trimethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (tmimBF4). The surface morphology of microspheres can be tuned by adjusting the reaction media. The products were characterized by X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Possible formation mechanisms of selenium nanowires and microspheres are proposed, respectively. The influences of the nature of reaction media, agitation and tmimBF4 on the morphologies development were experimentally investigated and it was found that these factors were of great importance for the formation of Se morphologies. Abstract:Se/Te alloy and Te nanowires (NWs) with different morphologies were synthesized through a novel, controllable solution-phase method. Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate was employed as a surfactant to control the reaction rate in the synthesis. Through reaction process dynamics control, both "bending" and "V-shaped" Se/Te alloy NWs were controllably produced. The phase structures and morphologies of the Se/Te and Te products were investigated with XRD, TEM, and HRTEM. The formation mechanisms of the NWs were investigated on the basis of the experimental results. The significance of these results lies in the important implications concerning the potential use of these NWs materials for nanoscale electronic devices.
Size- and Shape-Controlled Synthesis of ZnSe Nanocrystals Using SeO2 As Selenium Precursor.

Abstract:Here we report a low-cost and "green" phosphine-free route for the size- and shape-controlled synthesis of high-quality zinc blende (cubic) ZnSe nanocrystals. To avoid the use of expensive and toxic solvents such as trioctylphosphine (TOP) or tributylphosphine (TBP), SeO(2) was dispersed in 1-octadecene (ODE) as a chalcogen precursor. It has been found that the temperature and the surface ligand influenced the nucleation, the reaction speed and the formation of different shapes. Absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for the characterization of the as-synthesized ZnSe nanocrystals. The size-dependent photoluminescence (PL) range of the as-prepared ZnSe nanocrystals was between 390 and 450 nm, with the PL full width at half-maximum (FWHM) well controlled between 14 and 18 nm and PL quantum yields reached up to 40% at room temperature. Moreover, this new selenium precursor can be used to form tetrapod-shaped ZnSe nanocrystals when zinc acetylacetonate was introduced as the zinc precursor with a one-pot method.

Abstract:Air-stable single-source molecular precursor is applied for controlled size and morphology synthesis of one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional CdSe nanostructures. Two different growth approaches are compared to control the growth of nanostructures. When combined with well-defined Au colloidal catalysts, the use of single-source molecular precursor allows diameter control synthesis of monodispersed CdSe nanowires from 10-30 nm via a vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. In addition, a variety of CdSe nanostructures with different morphologies can be achieved and tuned without assistance of metallic catalysts by carefully manipulating dynamic thermal decomposition process of single-source molecular precursor. The new level of synthetic control afforded by our present work opens up new opportunities for using as-synthesized CdSe nanostructures as model systems for fundamental studies as well as building blocks for larger scale functional device assembly. Importantly, we demonstrate that a single CdSe tripod can be natively configured as a nanoscale phototransistor in which photocurrent created between two tripod arms can be efficiently modulated by applying a gate voltage through the third arm.

Abstract:The crystal phases are essential to the physicochemical properties and functionalities of materials. Copper selenide has emerged as an important and appealing semiconductor, which can exist in a variety of polymorphic phases. However, the richness of polymorphs also makes it a challenge to the direct preparation of copper selenide nanocrystals with tunable phases. Herein, two polymorphs, that is, quasi-tetragonal Cu2-xSe nanocubes and metastable wurtzite Cu2Se nanodisks, are successfully synthesized by using a single precursor, copper(I) selenocyanate (CuSeCN), as the Cu and Se sources. The key to phase modulation is the optimal choice of the ligand in the synthesis. The as-prepared nanocrystals possess different morphologies and compositions, giving rise to distinct optical properties and electrical conductivities. Interestingly, the copper selenide nanocrystals can provide a platform for the rational construction of two types of amorphous hollow AuCuSe nanostructures by reaction with Au(I) precursor, in which their final shapes are well kept as that of the original nanocrystal templates. This work provides an easy strategy for the phase-controlled synthesis of copper selenide nanocrystals and enables the design of new materials for broad applications.
Manipulation of the Morphology of ZnSe Sub-Micron Structures Using CdSe Nanocrystals as the Seeds

Abstract:ZnSe sub-microstructures with different morphologies, sizes, and microstructures were synthesized by a modified vapor deposition method using CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) as the seeds. On the basis of the appearance of the as-synthesized products, we show that the substrate temperature and CdSe NCs are the critical factors for controlling the size and the structure of various ZnSe sub-micro structures. By manipulating the growth driving force (i.e., the degree of supersaturation), the morphology of the ZnSe crystals can be varied sequentially from nanobelts to meso-scale rods to wires/branched wires. Their morphologies and structures were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The nanobelts grew along the [01-10] direction, whereas the meso-scale rods and wires grew along [0001]. Cathodoluminescence properties and growth mechanisms of these ZnSe structures are also discussed. The present results suggest that the simple method might be useful for the synthesis of other semiconductor nanostructures with manipulated morphologies to meet the growing demands of nanoscale science and technology.

Abstract:CdS and alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals were prepared by a simple noninjection method without nucleation initiators. Oleic acid (OA) was used to stabilize the growth of the CdS nanocrystals. The size of the CdS nanocrystals can be tuned by changing the OA/Cd molar ratios. On the basis of the successful synthesis of CdS nanocrystals, alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can also be prepared by simply replacing certain amount of S precursor with equal amount of Se precursor, verified by TEM, XRD, EDX as well as UV–Vis absorption analysis. The optical properties of the alloyed CdS x Se 1−x nanocrystals can be tuned by adjusting the S/Se feed molar ratios. This synthetic approach developed is highly reproducible and can be readily scaled up for potential industrial production.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) nanotubes and nanowires have been controllably prepared by a solution-phase approach consisting of hydrothermal process and subsequent sonochemical process in different solvent including methanol, ethanol, acetone, dimethyl formamide, water, isopropanol and ethylene glycol. It is revealed that the formation of the Se nanotubes or nanowires is dependent on the breakage or not of the in-situ generated Se nanoparticles. The effects of the solvents on the morphology of Se nanostructures have been preliminarily discussed. Finally, Se nanotubes and nanowires have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:PbSe nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a reactive template approach via solvothermal transformation of trigonal selenium (t-Se) nanotubes in ethylene glycol. It was revealed that a relatively high reaction temperature (e. g., 200 degrees C), adequate ascorbic acid, and proper lead source were crucial for preparing PbSe nanotubes through shape-preserved transformation of t-Se nanotubes. Moreover, novel Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes consisting of Se nanotubes covered with a PbSe sheath were obtained by shortening the reaction time and subsequent removal of the inner Se nanotubes resulted in the formation of thin-walled PbSe nanotubes (less than 20 nm in wall thickness). On the basis of the experimental observations, a plausible mechanism for the formation of PbSe nanotubes as well as Se@ PbSe composite nanotubes was proposed. Furthermore, preliminary electrochemical measurements showed that the prepared PbSe nanotubes exhibited a good electrochemical activity.
Selenium Nanotubes Synthesized by A Novel Solution Phase Approach

Abstract:In this communication, we demonstrate a new approach to well-controlled growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes, which comprises a hydrothermal process and a following sonication. The hydrothermal process was used to derive Se particles of trigonal phase. In the subsequent sonication, if the Se particles were large enough, they were first broken, and then aggregated along the circumferential edge of the gap thus forming Se nanotubes; conversely, the Se particles were not broken and then aligned into nanowires. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) proved that both the Se nanotubes and nanowires were single crystalline in nature and <100> oriented. Based on a series of the TEM observation, a phenomenological mechanism for the elucidation of the controllable growth of Se nanowires and nanotubes is presented.

Abstract:The shape controlled synthesis of high quality colloidal lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystals (NCs) was achieved through a simple solvothermal process. By using oleic acid (OA) as a ligand and activating agent for the Pb precursor, the evolution of the NCs from nanospheres to nanoflowers and finally to nanocubes was achieved by increasing the reaction time. Further, the shape variation from nanospheres to polyhedrons was readily realized through the increase of OA concentration in the stock solution. More interestingly, the change of the anion ligand was proven to be a facile method to control the structure and size of the nanoflowers. The X-ray diffraction and TEM analysis demonstrated the cubic rock salt structure of the synthesized PbSe NCs. Accompanied by comprehensive analytics, the discussion on the possible mechanisms for the shape evolution was provided.

Abstract:In the present study, ZnSe nanostructures with complex morphologies and different phase structures were synthesized via a solvothermal approach using a mixed solution of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and de-ionized water (DIW). It was found that the phase and morphology of the as-prepared products could be controlled by changing the volume ratio of TETA to DIW. Metastable ZnSe nanoflowers with layered structure could be obtained from pure TETA, which can be transformed to the wurtzite structure after heat-treating at 500°C in Ar atmosphere. With the addition of DIW, the morphology changed from flowers to spheres, and when the volume ratio of TETA to DIW was 1:1, loose spheres composed of nanoparticles were obtained. Variation of the TETA content in the mixed solvent also allows controlling of the crystallographic phase of ZnSe (wurtzite or zinc blende). Both the as-prepared products and the annealed powders were systematically characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared absorbance spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy methods.

Abstract:This paper describes a method of catalyst-assisted pyrolysis of preceramic precursors for the synthesis of Si-based nanostructures. Through tuning the processing conditions, clustered SiOx amorphous nanowires, bundled single-crystalline Si3N4 nanowires, Y-shape and network-like branched single-crystalline Si3N4 nanostructures, aligned single-crystalline Si3N4 nanowires, and so on, have been synthesized. The results reveal that it is a simple and easy-controlling method, and has potential for mass production of nanomateirals of controlled morphology.

One-pot Synthesis of Bi2Se3 Nanostructures with Rationally Tunable Morphologies

Abstract:Shape control has proven to be a powerful and versatile means of tailoring the properties of Bi2Se3 nanostructures for a wide variety of applications. Here, three different Bi2Se3 nanostructures, i.e., spiral-type nanoplates, smooth nanoplates, and dendritic nanostructures, were prepared by manipulating the supersaturation level in the synthetic system. This mechanism study indicated that, at low supersaturation, defects in the crystal growth could cause a step edge upon which Bi2Se3 particles were added continuously, leading to the formation of spiral-type nanoplates. At intermediate supersaturation, the aggregation of amorphous Bi2Se3 particles and subsequent recrystallization resulted in the formation of smooth nanoplates. Furthermore, at high supersaturation, polycrystalline Bi2Se3 cores formed initially, on which anisotropic growth of Bi2Se3 occurred. This work not only advances our understanding of the growth mechanism but also offers a new approach to control the morphology of Bi2Se3 nanostructures.

Abstract:Recently, the biomolecule-assisted synthesis method has been a new and promising focus in the preparation of various nanomaterials. But current works mainly focus on the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and nanowires using macro-biomolecules (e.g. virus, protein and DNA) as templates in the presence of a reducing agent. Beta-carotene, one of the most common bio-antioxidants, can be oxidized to form species with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ends, which can provide an in situ soft template for the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, a simple beta-carotene-assisted method was developed for the first time to synthesize t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons with high crystallinity. We demonstrate that beta-carotene serves as not only the reducing agent, but also an in situ template in the preparation of Se one-dimensional nanostructures. It is found that the growth mechanism of Se nanomaterials is different from the familiar sphere–wire process. A novel flake-cracking mechanism is proposed. By this biomolecule-assisted route, Te one-dimensional nanostructures and Pd nanowires were also fabricated. The assisted-biomolecule in our method may be spread to carotenoids and other antioxidants, and thus broaden the application fields of biomolecules. Our preliminary investigations have shown that the facile, solution-phase biomolecule-assisted method can be potentially extended to the preparation of other low-dimensional nanostructures. The synthesized t-Se nanowires and nanoribbons may serve as templates to generate other tubular functional nanomaterials and find applications in the studies of structure–property relationships as well as in the fabrication of nanoscale optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Controllable synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals is an attractive issue yet still remains challenging. Here, we describe our efforts toward this direction by a simple colloidal method to engineer quinary Cu3ZnInSnSe6 (CZITSe) nanocrystals with different crystal phases and shapes. In this work, wurtzite and zincblende CZITSe nanocrystals with different morphology could be selectively synthesized by tuning the addition order of the Se precursor to metal reactants solution. Furthermore, the optical and electrical behavior of the resultant nanocrystals exhibits obvious structure-dependent properties. This work will open new exciting avenues to explore the controllable synthesis of multicomponent semiconductor nanocrystals with metastable structures.
