Abstract:Previous researches have demonstrated that biological phosphorus removal from wastewater could be induced by oxic/extended-idle (O/EI) regime. In this study, an anoxic period was introduced after the aeration to realize biological nutrient removal. High nitrite accumulation ratio and polyhydroxyalkanoates biosynthesis were obtained in the aeration and biological nutrient removal could be well achieved in oxic/anoxic/extended-idle (O/A/EI) regime for the wastewater used. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance in O/A/EI regime was compared with that in conventional anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A(2)/O) and O/EI processes. The results showed that O/A/EI regime exhibited higher nitrogen and phosphorus removal than A(2)/O and O/EI processes. More ammonium oxidizing bacteria and polyphosphate accumulating organisms and less glycogen accumulating organisms containing in the biomass might be the principal reason for the better nitrogen and phosphorus removal in O/A/EI regime. Furthermore, biological nutrient removal with O/A/EI regime was demonstrated with municipal wastewater. The average TN, SOP and COD removal efficiencies were 93%, 95% and 87%, respectively.

Abstract:The wastewater treatment performance in an inverted A 2 /O reactor supplemented with fermentation liquid of primary sludge was explored comparing to commercial carbon sources sodium acetate and glucose. Similar COD removal rate was observed with the effluent COD stably reaching the discharge standard for those 3 carbon sources. However, the fermentation liquid distributed more carbon source in the anaerobic zone. Fermentation liquid and sodium acetate tests achieved better nitrogen removal rate than glucose test. The fermentation liquid test showed the best biological phosphorus removal performance with the effluent phosphorus barely reaching the discharge standard. The microbial community characterization revealed that the fermentation liquid test was dominated by phylum Proteobacter in all the anoxic, anaerobic and aerobic zones. Denitrifying phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) (i.e., genera Dechloromonas and unclassified_f__Rhodocyclaceae ) were selectively enriched with high abundances (over 20%), which resulted in improved phosphorus removal efficiency. Moreover, the predicted abundances of enzymes involved in nitrogen and phosphorus removal were also enhanced by the fermentation liquid.

Abstract:This study demonstrated the feasibility of enhanced biological phosphorus removal coupled with in-situ fermentation (EBPR-F) to improve phosphorus removal from real digested swine wastewater. We used fermentable substrates (casein hydrolysate and glucose) as the external carbon sources to promote in-situ fermentation and enhance biological phosphorus removal. Compared with conventional EBPR dominated by Candidatus Accumulibacter, EBPR-F had significantly better phosphorus removal with enriched polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs). Under supplementation with 100 mg/L glucose, total phosphorus (TP) removal was over 95% in EBPR-F, with an average TP concentration in the effluent below 1.0 mg/L, satisfying the discharge standard (8 mg P/L) in China. The PAO activity and relative abundance of Candidatus Accumulibacter (44.7% ± 3.1%) and Tetrasphaera (18.1% ± 6.6%) in EBPR-F were much higher than those in EBPR. The improvement in phosphorus removal of EBPR-F was due to the enrichment of Tetrasphaera through the enhanced in-situ fermentation, as Tetrasphaera can efficiently ferment complex organic matter and provide bioavailable organics for phosphorus removal.

Abstract:Recently, it has been reported that biological phosphorus removal (BPR) could be achieved in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with aerobic/extended-idle (A/EI) regime using synthetic medium. This paper first examined the feasibility and stability of the A/EI regime treating real domestic wastewater. The results showed that the A/EI-SBR removed 1.32 +/- 0.03-3.55 +/- 0.04 mg of phosphorus per g of volatile suspended solids during the steady-state operation, suggesting that BPR from domestic wastewater could be well realised in the A/EI regime. Then, another SBR operated as the conventional anaerobic/oxic (A/O) regime was conducted to compare the soluble orthophosphate (SOP) removal with the A/EI regime. The results clearly showed that the A/EI regime achieved higher SOP removal than the A/O regime. Finally, the mechanism for the A/EI-SBR driving superior SOP removal was investigated. It was found that the sludge cultured by the A/EI regime had more polyphosphate accumulating organisms and less glycogen accumulating organisms than that by the A/O regime. Further investigations showed that the A/EI-SBR had a lower glycogen transformation and a higher PHB/PHV ratio, which correlated well with the superior phosphorus removal. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. First, phosphorus removal in the OEI process was compared, respectively, with methanol and ethanol as the sole substrate. The results showed that the ethanol-reactor achieved 90.8 +/- 2.3% of phosphorus removal, which was approximate twofold than the methanol-reactor. Further studies displayed that the cells in the ethanol-reactor contained more PAOs, and had higher activities of exopolyphosphatase and polyphosphate kinase than those in the methanol-reactor. Also, the aerobic transformations of polyhydroxyalkanoates and glycogen in the ethanol-reactor were, respectively, higher and lower than those in the methanol-reactor, which were consistent with the reactors performances. Then, the feasibility of using ethanol as external substrate to enhance EBPR in the OEI process was confirmed for a municipal wastewater. Finally, EBPR performance and metabolic transformation values between the OEI and the anaerobic/oxic (A/O) regimes with ethanol as the sole substrate were compared. The results showed that EBPR in the ethanol-OEI reactor was higher than that in the ethanol-A/O reactor. Abstract:This paper examines the feasibility of using alkaline fermentative short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) as the carbon sources of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) microorganisms. First, the released phosphorus was recovered from the SCFA-containing alkaline fermentation liquid by the formation of struvite precipitation, and 92.8% of the soluble ortho-phosphorus (SOP) could be recovered under conditions of Mg/P = 1.8 (mol/mol), pH 10.0, and a reaction time of 2 min. One reason for a Mg addition required in this study that was higher than the theoretical value was that the organic compounds consumed Mg. Then, two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were operated, respectively, with acetic acid and alkaline fermentative SCFAs as the carbon source of EBPR. The transformations of SOP, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), and glycogen and the removal of phosphorus were compared between two SBRs. It was observed that the phosphorus removal efficiency was around 98% with the fermentative SCFAs, and about 71% with acetic acid, although the former showed much lower transformations of both PHAs and glycogen. The reasons that fermentative SCFAs caused much higher SOP removal than acetic acid were due to less PHAs used for glycogen synthesis and a higher PHA utilization efficiency for SOP uptake. Finally, the toxicity of fermentation liquid to EBPR microorganisms was examined, and no inhibitory effect was observed. It can be concluded from this study that the SCFAs from alkaline fermentation of waste activated sludge were a superior carbon source for EBPR microorganisms than pure acetic acid.

Abstract:An innovative static/oxic/anoxic (SOA) activated sludge process characterized by static phase as a substitute for conventional anaerobic stage was developed to enhance biological nutrient removal (BNR) with influent ammonia of 20 and 40 mg/L in R1 and R2 reactors, respectively. The results demonstrated that static phase could function as conventional anaerobic stage. In R1 lower influent ammonia concentration facilitated more polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) growth, but secondary phosphorus release occurred due to NOx- depletion during post-anoxic period. In R2, however, denitrifying phosphorus removal proceeded with sufficient NOx-. Both R1 and R2 saw simultaneous nitrification-denitrification. Glycogen was utilized to drive post-denitrification with denitrification rates in excess of typical endogenous decay rates. The anoxic stirring duration could be shortened from 3 to 1.5 h to avoid secondary phosphorus release in R1 and little adverse impact was found on nutrients removal in R2. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A new chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) and sludge fermentation process are developed for improved nutrient removal, energy saving and resource recovery in municipal wastewater treatment. The FeCI3-based CEPS with a dosage of 20 mg-Fe/L can remove 75.6% of organic pollutants and 99.3% of PO4-P on average from wastewater. Under natural fermentation conditions, the CEPS sludge undergoes effective hydrolysis and acidogenesis to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and release phosphate as valuable resources. By using CEPS, around 27% of the organic carbon in wastewater influent can be recovered via sludge fermentation, mainly in the form of VFAs, and about 23% of phosphorus recovered for making vivianite fertilizer. In comparison, both the organic and phosphorus recovery ratios from wastewater are under 10% with conventional primary sedimentation and sludge fermentation. CEPS combined with side-stream sludge fermentation can be readily applied in new treatment plants or in a retrofit of existing treatment systems.(C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel approach for the enhancement of phosphorus (P) recovery from Fe bound P compounds (FePs)-bearing sludge by co-fermentation with protein-rich biomass (PRB) is reported. Four PRBs (silkworm chrysalis meal, fish meal, corn gluten meal, and soya bean meal) were used for co-fermentation. The results revealed that PRBs with strong surface hydrophobicity and loose structure favored the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes. Sulfide produced by PRB could react with FePs to form FeS and promote P release. Due to the neutralization of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by a relatively high concentration of ammonia, the pH was maintained near neutral and thus prevented the dissolution of metal ions (e.g., Fe and Ca). This was beneficial to save the cost of subsequent P recovery and form high-purity struvite. Compared with the control, the soluble orthophosphate and VFAs increased by 88.3% and 531.3%, respectively, in the co-fermentation system with silkworm chrysalis meal. Cysteine was the important intermediate. The metagenomics analysis indicated that the gene abundances of phosphate acetyltransferase and acetate kinase, which were key enzymes in the acetate metabolism, increased by 117.7% and 52.2%, respectively. The gene abundances of serine O-acetyltransferase and cysteine synthase increased by 63.4% and 54.4%, respectively. Cysteine was primarily transformed to pyruvate and sulfide. This study provides an environment-friendly strategy to simultaneously recover P and VFAs resources from FePs-bearing sludge and PRB waste.

Abstract:An integrated process of sludge in-situ fermentation, biological phosphorus removal and endogenous denitrification (ISFPR-ED) was developed to treat low ratio of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD/N) wastewater and waste activated sludge (WAS) in a single reactor. Nutrient removal and WAS reduction were achieved due to Tetrasphaera-dominated sludge fermentation provided organic carbon in extending the anaerobic duration. The WAS reduction efficiency, effluent orthophosphate (PO43--P) and total inorganic nitrogen reached 28.1 %, less than 0.4 and 7.2 mg/L, respectively. While organic carbon was reduced by 67 %. Tetrasphaera, conventional polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) stored glycogen, amino acids, and PHA for nutrient removal. Excess energy from fermentation enhanced anaerobic PO43--P uptake by Tetrasphaera. Tetrasphaera was the dominant PO43--P removal and fermentation bacteria, working synergistically with conventional PAOs and fermenting microorganisms. This integrated process improves nutrient removal efficiency and reduces operating costs for carbon addition and WAS disposal in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:To analyze the effect of sludge fermentation liquid on succession of bacterial community as carbon source, a three-month-long experiment was conducted in anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic process at room temperature. Experimental results showed that the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were improved to 84.7 and 94.3% from 64.5 and 54.2% at flow ratio of fermentation liquid and municipal wastewater, 1:35. Meanwhile, the principal component analysis demonstrated that significant shifts of bacterial community were observed with fermentation liquid addition. In particular, fermentation liquid appeared to be selective for the phosphorus-removal bacteria Gammaproteobacteria, denitrifying bacteria Comamonas sp., nitrogen-removal bacteria Betaproteobacteria, and denitrifying phosphate accumulating organisms Sphingobacterium, indicating simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, and denitrifying dephosphatation might be present after fermentation liquid addition.

Abstract:In enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process, phosphorus (P) in wastewater is removed via wasted sludge without actual recovery. A novel approach to realize phosphorus recovery with special external chemical oxygen demand (COD) addition in EBPR process was proposed. During the new operating approach period, it was found that (1) no phosphorus was detected in the effluent; (2) with an external addition of 10 % of influent COD amount, 79 % phosphorus in the wastewater influent was recovered; (3) without wasted sludge, the MLVSS concentration in the system increased from 2,010 to 3,400 mg/L and kept stable after day 11 during 24-day operating period. This demonstrates that the novel approach is feasible to realize phosphorus recovery with no wasted sludge discharge in EBPR process. Furthermore, this approach decouples P removal and sludge age, which may enhance the application of membrane bioreactor for P removal.

Abstract:A bench-scale expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor was applied to the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME). The reactor had been operated continuously at 35 degrees C for 514 d, with organic loading rate (OLR) increased from 1.45 to 17.5 kg COD/(m3 x d). The results showed that the EGSB reactor had good performance in terms of COD removal on the one hand, high COD removal of 91% was obtained at two days' of hydraulic retention time (HRT), and the highest OLR of 17.5 kg COD/(m3 x d). On the other hand, only 46% COD in raw POME was transformed into biogas in which the methane content was about 70% (V/V). A 30-d intermittent experiment indicated that the maximum transformation potential of organic matter in raw POME into methane was 56%. Volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation was observed in the later operation stage, and this was settled by supplementing trace metal elements. On the whole, the system exhibited good stability in terms of acidity and alkalinity. Finally, the operational problems inherent in the laboratory scale experiment and the corresponding countermeasures were also discussed.

Abstract:As a high-quality carbon source, fermentation broth could promote the phosphorus removal efficiency in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The transformation of substrates in EBPR fed with fermentation broth was well simulated using the modified activated sludge model No. 2 (ASM2) based on the carbon source metabolism. When fermentation broth was used as the sole carbon source, it was found that heterotrophic bacteria acted as a promoter rather than a competitor to the phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAO). When fermentation broth was used as a supplementary carbon source of real municipal wastewater, the wastewater composition was optimized for PAO growth; and the PAO concentration, which was increased by 3.3 times compared to that in EBPR fed with solely real municipal wastewater, accounting for about 40% of the total biomass in the reactor.

Abstract:Microalgal-bacterial consortium (MBC) is an effective way to meet increasingly stringent standards in wastewater treatment, with advantages in nutrient removal, resource recovery, and energy conservation. The efficient and stable operation of the MBC sewage treatment system is generally limited by the insufficient and unstable carbon source in the influent. In this study, a calcium peroxide-mediated anaerobic fermenter was configured to transfer the MBC sludge into the preferred carbon source, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in-situ, to alleviate the limitations. Experimental results showed that after 4-day 0.15 g/g VS calcium peroxide mediated anaerobic fermentation, the production of SCFAs and the proportion of acetic acid reached 514.8 mg COD/g VS and 59 %, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy, COD mass balance analysis, and lactate dehydrogenase assays jointly showed that calcium peroxide effectively promoted the breakdown of MBC sludge cells, which led to the release of large amounts of organic matter and could be attributed to the released OH-, & sdot;OH and & sdot;O2- from calcium peroxide, thereby providing more bioavailable substrates for SCFAs production. Microbial community analysis indicated that the anaerobes associated with hydrolysis and degradation of refractory organic matters were enriched in the mediated fermenter and had positive correlation with SCFAs production. Using such fermentation liquid as an additional carbon source for influent sewage, the MBC process performance was significantly promoted, with phosphorus and COD removal and sludge settleability reaching 84.7 %, 96.1 %, and 33 %, respectively. Configuring calcium peroxide-mediated anaerobic fermentation may thus become a sustainable strategy to strengthen the MBC sewage treatment system, thus providing new ideas for wastewater treatment to reduce inputs and improve performance.
Iron-enhanced Primary Sedimentation and Acidogenic Sludge Fermentation to Achieve Self-Sufficient Organic Carbon Supply for Enhanced Nutrient Removal in Wastewater Treatment✰

Abstract:To treat municipal wastewater with a low carbon to nitrogen ratio, the addition of an external carbon source is often needed to achieve enhanced nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) removal. To meet this need, this research developed an innovative strategy for reserving and utilizing organic pollutants to achieve a self-sufficient organic carbon supply for wastewater treatment. In the new system, before biological treatment by a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), Fe-based chemically enhanced primary sedimentation (CEPS) was used to reserve part of the organics from the wastewater in the CEPS sludge. By acidogenic fermentation in the side-stream, the settled organics in the CEPS sludge were converted into volatile fatty acids and other soluble organics to provide a suitable carbon source for denitrification in the anoxic phase of the SBR. The experimental results showed that the new SBR system integrated with CEPS and acidogenic sludge fermentation removed up to 89% of the total phosphorus (TP) and 83% of the total nitrogen (TN) from the wastewater. Compared with the conventional SBR system, TP and TN removal was increased by more than 65% and 50%, respectively. As well as increasing nutrient removal efficiency without the need for external carbon addition, the Fe-based CEPS greatly reduced the organic load on the SBR biological treatment process, reducing the aeration cost. Overall, a cost-effective wastewater treatment process is developed that can be used to upgrade existing wastewater treatment plants to improve the nutrient removal performance and meet more stringent discharge standards.

Abstract:This study aimed to present a strategy that utilizing semi-continuous flow primary sludge fermentation liquor as carbon source for anaerobic- multistage anaerobic/oxic (A-MAO) process to treat low chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) (C/N) ratio municipal wastewater. The results showed that adding fermentation liquor resulted in average TN and total phosphorus (TP) concentration in effluent decreased from 33 and 2.80 mg L-1 to 9.2 and 0.23 mg L-1, respectively, which met wastewater discharge standard. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that bacterial richness increased and diversity decreased with fermentation liquor adding, and the dominant genera varied from Methylophilaceae and Methylotenera to unclassified_f_Rhodocyclaceae, noran k_f__env.OPS_17, and Azospira. Meanwhile, the abundance of metabolism and organismal systems in A-MAO process rose from 48.42% and 0.74% to 49.52% and 0.78%. The improvement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal with fermentation adding was based on the increment of enzyme coding genes in nitrogen and phosphorus pathway.
