Abstract:The thermal efficiency improvement of solar thermal collectors by improving the absorbing fluid led to the utilization of nanofluids. The MXene nanofluid is an attractive candidate in high-efficiency direct solar thermal absorption applications. In this paper, 2D nanomaterials of thin-layer MXene Ti 3 C 2 were synthesized and water-based MXene Ti 3 C 2 nanofluids were prepared at different mass fractions ranging from 10 to 300 ppm. The suspension stability, optical absorption properties and photo-thermal conversion (PTC) characteristics of MXene Ti 3 C 2 nanofluids were tested and analyzed. The semi-metal induced localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Ti 3 C 2 enhanced the optical absorption capacity and most of solar irradiation could be absorbed in a thin layer of 1.5 cm. The effect of reverse irradiation angles (RIAs) on the PTC performance of MXene Ti 3 C 2 nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collector (DASC) fabricated by a double-layer vacuum quartz glass tube was experimentally investigated at reverse-illumination conditions. To calculate the PTC efficiency of the DASC, a modified model was proposed in terms of temporary temperature profiles. Both the maximum temperature rise and the highest PTC efficiency increased with the RIA. Compared with water, the temperature rises of MXene Ti 3 C 2 nanofluids were increased by 10.2, 10.8, and 11.9 °C at optimal Ti 3 C 2 fractions of 150, 180, and 220 ppm with respect to RIAs of 30°, 45°, and 60°, respectively. At the RIA of 60°, a PTC efficiency of 83.9% was obtained at an optimal fraction of 220 ppm, 63.5% higher than that of water. The MXene Ti 3 C 2 nanofluids exhibit good prospects for solar thermal energy harvest.
