Abstract:Zwitterions of charge-balanced units have super-low fouling properties induced by ionic solvation, but their extensive applications in polymeric substrates are strictly constrained by current constructing strategies. A zwitterion-like, charge-balanced ultrathin layer with high antifouling capacity was covalently constructed on delicate aromatic polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes via a mild and solvent-free grafting-to strategy. Two oppositely charged commercial short-chain carbonyl alkenes, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and methacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC), were directly mixed-grafted with amino groups on PA RO membrane surface via Michael addition. Under ambient temperature and pressure, these oppositely charged compounds were assembled into a zwitterion-like, charge-balanced ultrathin layer. The dynamic fouling experiments indicated that the modified membrane exhibited strong antifouling properties and excellent permeation recovery abilities. Surface characterization revealed that the selective layer thickness and surface roughness were not measurably changed. More meaningful is that the typical ridge-and-valley surface structure and the excellent separation performance were both well preserved after modification. This opens a universal avenue to construct a zwitterion-like, ultrathin antifouling layer on the delicate polymer substrate without compromising its original matrix structure and performance, which has promising application in areas of biosensors, tissue engineering, and biomaterials.
Engineering of hemocompatible and antifouling polyethersulfone membranes by blending with heparin-mimicking microgels

Abstract:To improve the hemocompatibility and antifouling property of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes, heparin-mimicking microgels of poly(acrylic acid-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (P(AA-VP)) and poly(2-acryl-amido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid-co-acrylamide) (P(AMPS-AM)) were synthesized by conventional free radical copolymerization, and then incorporated into a PES matrix by blending. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that heparin-mimicking microgels were successfully synthesized. The presence of the microgels in the membrane matrix was also confirmed by attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and SEM. Compared with pristine PES membranes, the improvement of the antifouling property of the heparin-mimicking microgel modified membranes was demonstrated by the increased flux recovery ratio and improved anti-bacterial adhesion, while the enhancement of hemocompatibility for the modified membranes was proved by the decreased plasma protein adsorption, suppressed platelet adhesion, prolonged clotting times, as well as depressed blood-related complement activation. Additionally, after introducing the heparin-mimicking microgels, the membranes showed enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation properties. These results indicated that the heparin-mimicking microgel modified membranes had great potential to be used as blood contacting materials.

Abstract:The fabrication and properties of anti-fouling and hemocompatible polyethersulfone (PES) membranes having zwitterionic hydrogel thin films as surface layers were described in this paper. PES membranes containing a reactive block copolymer PES-b-PHEDMA as an additive were first prepared by traditional non-solvent induced phase separation process. The hydrogel thin films were then grafted from membrane surface by free radical cross-linking polymerization participated by reactive ethylenic bonds in the PES-b-PHEDMA additive. The analysis of attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the successful immobilization of zwitterionic hydrogel thin films on PES membrane surfaces. Due to the hydrophilic and low-fouling characteristics of zwitterionic surfaces, the hydrogel-modified PES membranes showed significantly improved anti-fouling ability. More importantly, the zwitterionic membranes exhibited excellent hemocompatibility and the hydrogel thin films showed good durability in long-term tests. This work provides us with a facile and versatile strategy of covalently anchoring hydrogel thin films onto polymer membranes to achieve excellent anti-fouling properties and hemocompatibility.
Improved Antifouling Properties of Poly(Ether Sulfone) Membrane by Incorporating the Amphiphilic Comb Copolymer with Mixed Poly(Ethylene Glycol) and Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Brushes

Abstract:In this study, a novel amphiphilic comb copolymer P(poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-r-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)) with mixed hydrophilic and low surface energy side chains was synthesized by the free radical polymerization method. The microstructure of the synthesized amphiphilic copolymers was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and the nuclear magnetic resonance proton spectra (H-1 NMR). The copolymers were blended with poly(ether sulfone) (PES) to fabricate low-fouling ultrafiltration membranes through nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS). The surface distribution of the hydrophilic PEG segments and hydrophobic PDMS segments on the membranes via surface segregation during the NIPS process was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the wetting property, and the surface energy measurements. The multidefense mechanisms from fouling resistant to fouling release for the membranes modified by amphiphilic copolymers P(PEG-r-PDMS) were investigated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution as a model foulant. The antifouling properties of the modified membrane, especially for membrane PES/P(PEG-r-PDMS)similar to 31.3% (M-4), was effectively improved in comparation with pure PES membrane (M-0). The flux decline rate of the membrane M-4 was as low as 15.6%, and the flux recover ratio was up to 96.6%. The modified membrane also possessed stable and durable antifouling properties after three cycles of BSA filtration and chemical washing. It is promising that the present study can offer an effective approach to construct a low fouling membrane in the application of wastewater treatment and water purification.

Abstract:A facile and practical method for fabricating antifouling and antimicrobial poly(ether sulfone) (PES) membranes is developed in this work. A PES blend membrane was first fabricated by a traditional nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process with a reactive amphiphilic copolymer poly(ether sulfone)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-b-PES-b-PDMAEMA) as the blending additive. The hydrophilic PDMAEMA chains in the copolymer additive spontaneously migrated toward the interfaces between membrane and coagulant bath (usually water) during membrane formation. The enriched PDMAEMA chains on the as-made blend membranes were then quaternized by reacting with 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS) and 1-bromodecane, respectively. The zwitterionic PES membranes obtained from 1,3-PS treatment showed significantly improved antifouling ability and hemocompatibility. In another case, the resulting cationic PES membranes treated with 1-bromodecane exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphyloccocus aureus (S. aureus). The surface quaternization from the reactive polymeric additive provides a facile and versatile strategy for further functionalization of phase inversion membranes. This method is also suitable for other membrane materials. Moreover, it is easy to scale up in industrial applications.

Abstract:Anti-fouling and anti-bacterial polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were developed by the addition of poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) grafted silica nanoparticles (SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs) and further post-quaternization. The SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs were first synthesized by grafting PDMAEMA brushes from SiO2 NPs via surface-initiated, reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. PES/SiO2-g-PDMAEMA hybrid ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were then prepared from the blending solutions of PES and SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The PDMAEMA chains incorporated into the PES membranes were further quaternized by reacting with 1,3-propane sultone (1,3-PS) and methyl iodide (CH3I), respectively. After treatment with 1,3-PS, the resulting zwitterionic PES membranes exhibited excellent hydrophilicity, water permeability, solute rejection and protein anti-fouling properties. The cationic membranes obtained from CH3I treatment showed strong anti-bacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphyloccocus aureus Rosenbach (S. aureus). This work presents a convenient strategy for anti-biofouling modification of polymer membranes via surface quaternization of the reactive SiO2-g-PDMAEMA NPs additive.

Abstract:Highlights • A new zwitterionic polyethersulfone (PES) (zwitterionic PES - ZPES) was synthesized. • The zwitterionic brushes had an immediate effect on membrane wetting and permeation. • The hydrophilic zwitterionic chains significantly modified the membrane performance in anti-fouling and antibacterial. Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are commonly confronted with threats from pollutants during long-term operation. The zwitterions with high hydrophilicity are expected to be the critical material to improve the anti-fouling and antibacterial abilities of membranes. Herein, a new zwitterionic polyethersulfone (PES) (zwitterionic PES - ZPES) was synthesized. The as-prepared ZPES was used to fabricate a zwitterionic UF membrane via the non-solvent induced phase inversion (NIPS) method. Zwitterionic polymer skeleton enhanced the hydrophilicity, permeability and anti-fouling properties of the material. As a result, the ZPES membrane exhibited doubled water flux growth (269.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) compared with that of the PES (125.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 ) and high protein rejection (98.6%). Besides, the ZPES membrane could maintain an excellent flux recovery rate (94.1%) and antibacterial effect (more than 95%). Therefore, the excellent anti-fouling and antibacterial abilities of the ZPES membrane broaden its application scope further. Graphical abstract As-prepared zwitterionic brushes carried anionic (sulfonic acid) and cationic (quaternary amine) groups that favored membrane surface hydrophilicity enhancement. Water molecules could be grabbed to construct a stable hydration shell due to the existence of hydrophilic zwitterionic chains, which accelerated water penetration and enhanced anti-fouling and antibacterial effectiveness. Abstract:Here we describe the development of versatile antifouling polyethersulfone (PES) filtration membranes modified via surface grafting of zwitterionic polymers from a reactive amphiphilic copolymer additive. Amphiphilic polyethersulfone-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PES-b-PHEMA) was beforehand designed and used as the blending additive of PES membranes prepared by phase inversion technique. The surface enriched PHEMA blocks on membrane surface acted as an anchor to immobilize the initiating site. Poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) were subsequently grafted onto the PES blend membranes by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The analysis of surface chemistry confirmed the successful grafting of zwitterionic PSBMA brushes on PES membrane surface. The resulted PES-g-PSBMA membranes were capable of separating proteins from protein solution and oil from oil/water emulsion efficiently. Furthermore, the modified membranes showed high hydrophilicity and strongly antifouling properties due to the incorporation of well-defined PSBMA layer. In addition, the PES-g-PSBMA membranes exhibited excellent blood compatibility and durability during the washing process. The developed antifouling PES membranes are versatile and can find their applications in protein filtration, blood purification and oil/water separation, etc.

Abstract:In this work, an original amphiphilic copolymer P(PEG-PDMS-KH570) combined with SiO2 nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) was utilized to prepare polyether sulfone (PES) nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane with enhanced antifouling performance. The enrichment of the organic-inorganic modifier P(PEG-PDMSKH570)@SiO2 were realized at the same time as the formation of PES UF membrane via sol-gel non solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The interaction between the copolymer P(PEG-PDMSKH570) and SiO2 NPs furnished a stable and effective antifouling PES UF membrane. Surface morphology, chemical composition characterization and wetting property measurements confirmed the segregation and distribution of the nanocomposite modifier. The multi-defense mechanism from fouling resistance to fouling release of the nanocomposite membranes was investigated by setting bovine serum albumin (BSA) aqueous solution as a model foulant. The antifouling properties of the modified membranes, especially for the PES/T@SiO2 similar to 4% membrane, were effectively improved. The flux decline rate of PES/T@SiO2 similar to 4% membrane was as low as 15.6%, and the flux recover ratio was up to 99.0%. Moreover, the modified membranes also possessed remarkable antifouling stability. Results of this work provide a facile method to construct a hierarchical and heterogeneous membrane surface that could achieve the multi defense mechanism in efficient water treatment. Preparation of Antifouling Ultrafiltration Membranes from Copolymers of Polysulfone and Zwitterionic Poly(arylene Ether Sulfone)s

Abstract:The past few decades have witnessed rapid gains in our demands of antifouling membranes such as water purification membranes and hemodialysis membranes. A variety of methodologies have been proposed for improving the antifouling performance and the hemocompatibility of the membranes. In this study, a series of copolymers (PSF-PESSB) containing polysulfone (PSF) and poly(arylene ether sulfone) bearing pendant zwitterionic sulfobetaine groups (PESSB) were prepared via one-pot polycondensation. Subsequently, the ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared from different zwitterion-containing copolymers. The prepared membranes showed high thermal stability and mechanical properties. Besides, it also displayed attractive antifouling performance and blood compatibility. Compared with the original PSF membrane, the amount of protein absorption on the modified membrane was reduced; the flux recovery ratio and the resistance to blood cells were significantly improved. The results of this work suggest that PSF-PESSB membranes are expected to be applied in blood purification. The introduction of zwitterion-containing polymers to membranes paves ways for developing advanced hemodialysis technologies for crucial process.
Development of an antimicrobial and antifouling PES membrane with ZnO/poly(hexamethylene biguanide) nanocomposites incorporation

Abstract:Although polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are extensively utilized in water and wastewater treatment, they typically encounter serious bio/organic fouling problems. In this work, an antimicrobial and antifouling PES membrane was developed through incorporating novel ZnO/PHMB (zinc oxide/ polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride) nanocomposites on the surface of a commercial PES membrane, with PDA (polydopamine) serving as an intermediate connection layer. XPS, along with synchrotron-based XRF and ATR-FTIR results confirmed the successful synthesis of the ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites and ZnO/PHMB membranes. The ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites exhibited an impressive antimicrobial rate of 99.99 % with a minimal amount of PHMB addition (wt ZnO :wt PHMB = 1:0.01). The concentration of the ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites had the most significant impact on the antimicrobial performance of the ZnO/PHMB membrane. The 600ZP membrane (i.e., the PES membrane modified with 600 mg/L ZnO/PHMB nanocomposites) emerged as the optimal choice, as evidenced by its commendable antimicrobial performance (92.80 %), water flux (249.02 LMH), RB (Rose Bengal sodium salt) rejection (93.96 %), and cost-benefit considerations. Compared to the pristine PES membrane, the 600ZP membrane showed 5.32 %, 15.76 %, and 7.62 % increased hydrophilicity, water flux, and RB rejection rate, respectively. Additionally, the 600ZP membrane possessed a bactericidal rate of 92.80 % and a flux recovery rate of 89.24 % after three cycles of SA (sodium alginate) filtration, indicating enhanced antimicrobial and antifouling capacities. The 600ZP membrane exhibited a remarkable 91.05 % higher water flux following prolonged (72 h) treatment of secondary effluent, compared to the PES membrane. Attribute to the increased hydrophilicity, outstanding antimicrobial activity, as well as excellent stability and durability, the as-prepared ZnO/PHMB membrane shows great potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A novel amphiphilic fluorinated gradient copolymer was prepared by semibatch reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) and 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl acrylate (TFOA) as monomers. The resultant amphiphilic copolymers were then incorporated into the poly(ether sulfone) (PES) to fabricate PES blend membranes via the non-solvent-induced phase separation method (NIPS). During the phase inversion process, both hydrophilic (PEGMA) and low surface energy (TFOA) segments significantly enriched on the membrane surface by surface segregation to form an amphiphilic surface, which was demonstrated by surface wetting properties and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. According to the filtration experiments of oil-in-water emulsion, the heterogeneous membranes exhibited superior oil-fouling resistant properties, that is, low flux decay (as low as 15.4%) and high flux recovery (almost 100%), compared to the pure PES membrane. The synergistic effect of fouling-resistant and fouling-release mechanisms was found to be responsible for the excellent antifouling capacities. The findings of this study offer a facile and robust strategy for fabricating ultralow oil-fouling membranes that might be used for effective oil/water separation.
Novel Amphiphilic PEO-grafted Cardo Poly(aryl Ether Sulfone) Copolymer: Synthesis, Characterization and Antifouling Performance

Abstract:A series of comb-like amphiphilic copolymers (PES-g-PEO) were synthesized through grafting poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) to cardo poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PES-NH) backbone. By controlling the ratios of PEO and cardo poly(aryl ether sulfone), amphiphilic copolymers with a range of PEO side chain were obtained and were employed to ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The PES-g-PEO-XX materials showed high thermal stability (T-d > 238 degrees C) and good mechanical properties especially elongation at break reached to 150% compared to 23% of PES-NH. The contact angle of PES-g-PEO-80 asymmetric membrane was decreased to a slow as 59 degrees which was 30 degrees lower than the value of PES-NH membrane (90 degrees), indicating that PES-g-PEO-80 membrane exhibited remarkable hydrophilic property. No protein adsorption was found on the surface of PES-g-PEO-60 and PES-g-PEO-80 membranes, showing excellent antifouling properties compared to PES-NH. Abstract:Zwitterionic polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by non-solvent phase separation (NIPS) method. Herein, a casting solution at 45 °C was developed by using chloromethylated polysulfone (CMPSf), N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as a solvent, 4-amino-benzenesulfonic acid monosodium salt (ABS) as a cross-linking agent, and Na 2 CO 3 as an acid binder. Simultaneously, the occurrence of the electrophilic substitution reaction between ABS and CMPSf caused the formation of ABS grafting CMPSf (CMPSf-g-ABS). After a specific reaction time, the casting solution was applied to cast membranes, which were subsequently submerged in coagulation bath. A zwitterionic ultrafiltration (ZUF) membrane was obtained using NIPS following the treatment of hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution (1 M mol). Because of the formation of cross-linked CMPSf-g-ABS, the results revealed that the casting solution's viscosity increased sharply from 425.4 mPa s at the initial stage (0 h) to 4810.8 mPa s (22 h). Interestingly, the morphology of the membranes with an asymmetric finger-like structure at 0 h gradually transformed to a gradient sponge-like structure after 22 h. Specifically, the ZUF membrane (M22-H) with the gel fraction of 72.1% procured after the reaction of 22 h demonstrated a low water contact angle (40.17°) and a high pure water permeance (420.4 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). The M22-H also exhibited a high flux recovery rate (FRR) (90.2%), bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection (>95%), and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) antibacterial rate (96.2%). The surface of the ZUF membrane with numerous zwitterionic groups enhances the hydration layer's energy (i region 16 nm), causing a significant improvement in the antifouling performance. This research opens new avenues for preparing zwitterionic functional membranes.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a highly efficient, convenient and universal protocol for blood-compatible modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes via in situ cross-linked copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) in PES solutions. Static water contact angle, protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and clotting time of the modified PES membranes are systematically studied, and the results indicate that the modified membranes show improved hydrophilicity, good blood anticoagulant and antifouling properties after introducing HEMA and AA. Meanwhile, the modified membranes perform low contact activation and complement activation when they come in contact with blood. The effect of the HEMA/AA ratios on the blood compatibility is also investigated to identify the different roles played by HEMA and AA in the modification; the HEMA could more effectively enhance the membrane antifouling property, while the AA could more effectively improve the anticoagulant property. The results indicated that the blood-compatible PES membranes prepared via the in situ cross-linked copolymerization had potential to be used in the field of blood purification.

Abstract:Composite UF membranes of polyethersulfone (PES) and α-ZrP were developed.The hydrophilicity of PES membrane increased with the incorporation of α-ZrP.PES/α-ZrP membranes have higher mechanical strength, porosity, & thermal stability.The membranes efficiently removed Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ from wastewater.Composite membranes exhibited antifouling and self-cleaning properties.This research aimed at synthesizing polyethersulfone/α-zirconium phosphate (PES/ α-ZrP) flat-sheet nanocomposite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The impact of α-ZrP nanoparticle (NP) addition on the morphology, functionalities, hydrophilicity, and surface charge of the membrane, among others, were investigated. Different concentrations of α-ZrP NPs (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 wt.%) were tested. Membranes surface morphology was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microscopic analyses affirmed that the α-ZrP NPs were successfully incorporated into the PES membranes. Also, the composite membranes were hydrophilic reporting increased mechanical strength, porosity, and thermal stability than the pristine PES membrane. An overall removal efficiency of 70.2 ± 1.0, 99.7 ± 0.2, 81.7 ± 1.1, 74.4 ± 1.5, and 91.5 ± 2.0% for Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+ was reported, respectively when 0.25 wt.% of α-ZrP NPs was added. The enhanced capabilities of the composite membranes in the heavy metal removal was ascribed to the increased electrostatic attraction forces with the metal ions in the solution and the surface of the PES/α-ZrP composite membrane. Abstract:We report a facile ultrafiltration (UF) membrane modification strategy to impart anti-fouling properties to a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane via a simple codeposition of polydopamine (PDA) and the zwitterionic surfactant, 3-(N, N-Dimethylmyristylammonio) propane sulfonate (SB3-14). The effect of SB3-14 concentration (from 0.5, 1 to 2 mM) was also studied. The proposed modification notably increased membrane anti-fouling property without compromising membrane transport properties. As demonstrated by dynamic fouling experiments using BSA as a model foulant, the modified membranes presented significantly alleviated flux decline and decreased fouling resistance compared to the pristine membrane. Especially, the membrane modified with low SB3-14 concentration (i.e., 0.5 mM) possessed the optimal antifouling performance compared to those modified with higher concentrations, which may be attributed to reduced efficiency in PDA/SB3-14 aggregates functionalization on membrane surface in the presence of excessive zwitterions. Furthermore, the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) results illustrate that Lewis acid-base (AB) played a dominant role during the fouling construction, and the presence of SB3-14 could tremendously decrease AB energy. This codeposition of PDA and non-polymer zwitterionic surfactant could be applied to prepare anti-fouling PES membranes with low reversible and irreversible fouling, which provides a new scope for post modification of UF membranes.

Abstract:Asymmetrical ultrafiltration membranes were prepared from poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) blends with the synthesized amphiphilic graft copolymers having a PPESK backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains (PPESK-g-PEG). The membranes were prepared by the traditional immersion precipitation method in a wet process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and water contact angle measurements indicated that the hydrophilic graft copolymers preferentially segregated to membrane surface during membrane formation, contributing the membranes with enhanced surface hydrophilicity. The effects of coagulation bath composition and casting temperature on the surface enrichment properties of the graft copolymers, membrane morphology, permeability and fouling resistance were investigated. It was found that the elevation of casting temperature promoted the surface immigration of the additives, and consequently endowed PPESK membrane with higher surface hydrophilicity and permeability. Based on static protein adsorption and protein filtration experiments, the anti-fouling properties of the membranes were evaluated, and the results showed that the PPESK membranes incorporating with PPESK-g-PEG had a significantly improved resistance to protein fouling.
Effects of a dual functional filler, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT, for enhanced antifouling and penetration performance of PES composite membranes

Abstract:Ultrafiltration technology, separating water from impurities by the core membrane, is an effective strategy for treating wastewater to meet the ever-growing requirement of clean and drinking water. However, the similar nature of hydrophobic organic pollutants and the membrane surface leads to severe adsorption and aggregation, resulting unavoidable membrane degradation of penetration and rejection. The present study presents a novel block amphiphilic polymer, polyethersulfone-g-carboxymethyl chitosan@MWCNT (PES-g-CMC@MWCNT), which is synthesized by grafting hydrophobic polyethersulfone to hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan in order to suspend CMC in organic solution. A mixture of hydrophilic carboxymethyl chitosan and hydrophobic polymers (polyethersulfone), in which hydrophilic segments are bonded to hydrophobic segments, could provide hydrophilic groups, as well as gather and remain stable on membrane surfaces by their hydrophobic interaction for improved compatibility and durability. The resultant ultrafiltration membranes exhibit high water flux (198.10 L m-2·h-1), suitable hydrophilicity (64.77°), enhanced antifouling property (82.96%), while still maintains excellent rejection of bovine serum albumin (91.75%). There has also been an improvement in membrane cross-sectional morphology, resulting in more regular pores size (47.64 nm) and higher porosity (84.60%). These results indicate that amphiphilic polymer may be able to significantly promote antifouling and permeability of ultrafiltration membranes.
