Abstract:In this paper, bifunctional composite particles were synthesized by in situ grafting Au nanoparticles on the surface of SiO2/polyethyleneimine/Eu-polyoxometalates (SiO2/PEI/Eu-POM) spheres. It was found that the PEI layer on SiO2/PEI/Eu-POM spheres could act as a reductant for in situ reduction of metal ions to Au nanoparticles. The sizes of Au particles grafted on spheres could be tuned by adjusting the sizes of SiO2 spheres. The composite particles showed excellent red luminescence under UV light, which could be observed by naked eyes. In addition, they exhibited good catalytic activity in the oxidation of styrene and reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The smaller composite particles show the better overall performance in the catalytic reaction because of their lager active surface. The present strategy gives a promising way to prepare bifunctional composites for broad applications in catalysis and labeling. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A high throughput way to generate gold nanoparticle-based microcapsules was demonstrated based on the interfacial assembly in a water and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol two phase system. The obtained gold microcapsules exhibit superior stability, good flexibility, ductility, and a significant enhancement (about 10-fold) in the biphasic catalytic reaction rate upon near-infrared light irradiation.

Abstract:A facile and controllable method of immobilizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on hollow silica particles (SiO(2)HPs) is proposed and the resultant SiO2HP/AuNP composite particles exhibit high catalytic activity. The carrier SiO(2)HPs decorated with amino groups are prepared in a W/O inverse emulsion, having a well-defined hollow structure, mesoporous wall and dense bush-like surface morphology. A large number of ultrafine AuNPs are generated via in situ reduction of chloroauric acid by the amino groups and firmly anchored on the bush-like silica shell. The structure and morphology of the composites are governed by changing the weight percentage of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the total amount of monomers (W-a), which have been extensively characterized. Benefiting from the unique multiple structures, the composite particles exhibited outstanding catalytic efficiency and repeatability, which are confirmed by two oxidation-reduction reactions of 2-nitroaniline/NaBH4 and 4-nitrophenol/NaBH4.

Abstract:Here, we synthesize a novel polyoxometalate-based crystalline tubular inorganic-organic compound, Mn[Zn(im)](2){[Na(H2O)](2)[Mn(H2O)(2)][Zn(im)(2)][P4Mo6O31H6](2)}center dot 8H(2)O (IFMC-100) (im and IFMC correspond to imidazole and Institute of Functional Material Chemistry, respectively). Au-anchored tubular microreactor, Au@IFMC-100, has been prepared by simple immersion of IFMC-100 in an ethanol solution of HAuCl4 without any extra reducing agents, photochemical and electrochemical auxiliaries. Furthermore, IFMC-100 and Au@IFMC-100 have been employed as catalysts for the reduction of K3Fe(CN)(6) and 4-nitrophenol with NaBH4 in aqueous solution, respectively. The results indicate the as-prepared Au@IFMC-100 microtubes exhibit enhanced catalytic performance in redox catalysis.

Abstract:A facile method has been developed for the synthesis of a flower-like macrocellular siliceous foam with a large and uniform pore size, using P123 and protic ionic liquid as the co-templates under acidic conditions. The influence of the protic ionic liquid concentration and the hydrothermal temperature on the synthesis of the macrocellular siliceous foam is systematically investigated. The structures of all the composites were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, and N-2 gas sorption. The results showed that the flower-like macrocellular siliceous foam possessed about 100 nm sized large pores, which was appropriate for it to be applied in catalytic reactions. Moreover, Au NPs were immobilized in the pores of the flower-like macrocellular siliceous foam through a self-assembly procedure. The obtained NH2-S-6-393/Au sample exhibited a remarkably higher catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) by NaBH4. The macrocellular siliceous foams are suitable supports for catalytic reactions on account of their special structure and can be highly beneficial for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on carriers have received wide attention as catalysts as a result of their excellent stability and catalytic performance. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of hollow silica-supported gold nanocatalysts (SNPs@AuNPs) composed of highly dispersed AuNPs with approximately 4.30 nm using an in situ colloidal polyelectrolyte template strategy. The monodisperse polystyrene nanospheres accompanied by poly[(2-methacryloyloxyethyl)trimethylammonium chloride] brushes were first synthesized. Subsequently, the facile polymer-brush-engaged strategy for the synthesis of hollow SNPs@AuNPs involves in situ reduction of AuNPs, hydrolytic condensation of silica, and a chemical etching process. In combination with dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the as-obtained polymer brushes were proven as effective versatile nanoreactors for the synthesis of AuNPs and silica nanoparticles without any catalysts. Benefiting from the structural advantages, the resultant hollow SNPs@AuNPs manifested superior catalytic activity and reusability for the reduction of p-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride in aqueous solution. With a delicate design, we believe that this synthetic strategy can be extended to fabricate multifunctional nanomaterials with diverse compositions, which would be of great interest in catalysis, energy, and many other important domains.
Nanoporous Gold Thin Film: Fabrication, Structure Evolution, and Electrocatalytic Activity

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a new and simple approach to fabricate nanoporous structure on gold thin films (similar to 1.5 mu m) via electrochemical alloying and dealloying reactions in ZnCl2/DMSO electrolyte. The relevant parameters affecting the formation of nanoporous structure in the alloying/dealloying process in organic electrolyte and the post-treatment in sulfuric acid solution are investigated in detail by simultaneous electrochemical and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) characterization. Herein, a new strategy for direct estimation of the end-point in the dealloying process is developed, assuring the success of preparing nanoporous gold (NPG) films with the highest purity and porosity. Our method is especially useful for fabrication of nanoporous structure on ultrathin Au films without any further deposition of Au. The as-prepared NPG thin films are then used as anodic catalysts for borohydride oxidation in the direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC), which show much higher catalytic activities in contrast to planar gold electrode, indicative of the promising applications in actual DBFC systems. We believe that our work offers a new route to solve the current problems encountered in the development of DBFCs.

Abstract:Stable gold/mesoporous silica nanocomposites (with Au nanoparticles intercalated in the walls of mesoporous silica) were successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied as catalysts. A challenging issue associated with intercalation and the use of coordinating agents is the effect of the coordinating agent on the mesoporous silica structure and periodicity. This investigation is targeted at elaborating the effect of the coordinating agent on the resulting mesoporous structure. The amount of Au coordinating agent bis[3-(triethoxysilyl) propyl]-tetrasulfide (TESPTS) was systematically altered to synthesize a range of materials with varying Au loadings and morphologies. These materials were characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. The structures of the catalysts were found to range from mesoporous to vesical-and foam-like upon varying the TESPTS/polymer template (P123) ratio. Additionally, the sizes of Au nanoparticles increased by increasing the amount of TESPTS. The catalytic properties of the resulting materials were examined using oxidation of benzyl alcohol and reduction of 4-nitrophenol as probe reactions. The intercalated systems demonstrated high activity and more importantly were robust and readily reusable. This approach to imparting stability to nanoscale materials may be much more broadly applicable and expand the types of environments in which they can be utilized.

Abstract:A microreactor that can confine chemical reactions exclusively in tiny vessels with the volume of ∼0.015 μm3 is introduced. Aluminum inversed hollow nanocone arrays (IHNAs) are fabricated by a simple and efficient colloidal lithography method. Ag and Au nanoparticles (NPs), as well as polypyrrole, grow exclusively in the conic cavities under light illumination. The photocatalytic effect arising from the plasmonic enhanced electric fields (E-fields) of IHNAs boosts the reactions and is in charge of the submicrometer site-selectivity. By partially inhibiting light to IHNAs, various hierarchical patterns at the macro-, micro-, and sub-microscale are obtained, inspiring a facile patterning technique by varying the light source. In addition, the Al IHNA films are transferred to flexible and curved substrates with unchanged performances, showing high flexibility for wide applications. Microreactors based on the IHNAs will contribute to the control of chemical reactions at different dimensions and offer great potentials in developing novel nanofabrication techniques.

Abstract:Hollow nanostructures with fascinating properties have inspired numerous interests in broad research fields. Cell‐mimicking complex hollow architectures with precise active components distributions are particularly important, while their synthesis remains highly challenging. Herein, we introduce a "top‐down" chemical surgery strategy to engrave the 3‐aminophenol formaldehyde resin (APF) spheres at nanoscale. Undergoing the cleavage of (Ar)C‐N bonds with ethanol as chemical scissors and subsequent repolymerization process, the solid APF spheres transform to multilevel hollow architecture with precise nanospatial distribution of organic functional groups (e.g., hydroxymethyl and amine groups). The transformation is tracked by electron microscopy and solid‐state NMR techniques, the category and dosage of alcohol are pivotal for the formation of multilevel hollow structures. Moreover, we demonstrate the evolution of nanostructures accompanied with unique organic microenvironments is able to accurately confine multiple gold nanoparticles, leading to the formation of pomegranate‐like particles. Through selective deposition of Pd nanoparticles onto the outer shell, bimetallic Au@APF@Pd catalysts are formed, which exhibit excellent catalytic hydrogenation performance with turnover frequency (TOF) value up to 11257 h–1. This work provides an effective method for precisely manipulating the nanostructure and composition of polymers on the nanoscale and sheds lights on the design of catalysts with precise spatial active components. Abstract:The catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles in carboxylic acid-containing polymer microgels can be enhanced by simply bubbling with CO2 gas, or adding salts of Hg2+, Pb2+, or Cd2+, making the catalytic activity comparable or even superior to that of free gold nanoparticles. This is plausibly achieved by altering the gold-polymer interface interaction. kinetic studies were carried out on the model gold-catalyzed reduction of 4-nitrophenol, nitrobenzene, and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) by NaBH4 in order to better understand the catalytic process. Abstract:Nanoporous ionic organic networks (PIONs) with a high ionic density (three cation-anion pairs per unit) have been synthesized by a facile SN2 nucleophilic substitution reaction. Owing to the electrostatic and steric effect, those ionic networks with porous channels can stabilize and support gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) in 1-2 nm. The Au@PION hybrid materials used as a heterogeneous catalyst were highly active, selective, and stable in the aerobic oxidation of saturated alcohols.

Abstract:A highly active and selective Au@UIO-67 catalyst has been assembled. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are monodispersed on the UIO-67 surface of a porous metal-organic framework, the micropores in UIO-67 as templates for adsorbing Au ions and enhancing interaction between AuNPs and UIO-67, favoring the formation of isolated and well-dispersed AuNPs. The catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity and CO selectivity for the reverse water-gas shift reaction in a fixed-bed flow reactor.
