Abstract:A prestrike high frequency inrush current arc will cause a local contact surface melting and welding in capacitive making process of vacuum interrupters (VIs). The contact surfaces may be damaged from a rupture of the contact welding during the next breaking operation, which has a negative effect on restrike. A fractal characteristic can be used to describe such irregular ruptures. The objective of this paper is to determine the contact morphological ruptures' fractal features in VIs suffering high frequency inrush current. A 3D laser microscopy was used to obtain the images of the contacts' rupture surfaces after suffering various amplitudes of inrush current, 5kA, 10kA, and 20kA. Two different contact materials of CuCr50/50 and CuW10/90 were investigated in the experiment. Then a box counting method is used to evaluate the images' fractal dimensions. The experimental results show that the fractal dimensions of CuCr contact surfaces exist two distinct areas, while CuW contact surfaces do not exist. For CuCr contacts, the fractal dimensions of the ruptured contact areas range from 2.3762 to 2.4775 and fractal dimensions of contact areas that are not ruptured range from 2.5775 to 2.6655. For CuW contact, the fractal dimensions range from 2.5121 to 2.7013.
