Abstract:Remote sensing of water temperature and flow dynamics is of paramount importance for water environment management. Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), an innovative method for remote sensing in underwater environments, utilizes the dual-way travel time of multiple sound paths to reconstruct the underwater temperature field. However, the transmission experiments are susceptible to data noise caused by station drift and inaccuracies in travel time extraction. In this study, a three-dimensional Rousseeuw Phase-Space (3-D-RPS) thresholding algorithm is proposed to remove outliers in the travel time data obtained from Huangcai Reservoir using three CAT systems on September 16, 2020. Additionally, this work includes grid partitioning based on sound path propagation, calculation of sound path lengths, and reference transmission time within each grid, construction of a sparse matrix, and inversion of the two-dimensional temperature field and its associated inversion error. The accuracy and applicability of the proposed method are confirmed through a comparison with data obtained from temperature–depth (TD) sensors. The results demonstrate the precision and suitability of this approach. By effectively mitigating the impact of station drift and extraction accuracy issues, this method provides a reliable temperature field estimation.
Investigation and Use of Surface-wave Characteristics for Near-surface Applications

Abstract:High-frequency surface-wave methods can provide reliable near-surface shear-wave (S-wave) velocity, which is a key parameter in many shallow-engineering applications, groundwater and environmental studies, and petroleum exploration. Recent research and key accomplishments at the China University of Geosciences at Wuhan into nearfield effects on surface-wave analysis provide not only insight into minimum-source geophone offsets required for generating high-quality surface-wave images but also provide a better understanding of the propagation characteristics of seismic wavefields through near-surface materials. New numerical modeling and dispersion-analysis algorithms are key tools used routinely in those studies. The modeling results illustrate very different energy-partitioning characteristics for Rayleigh and Love waves. Using a high-resolution linear Radon transform produces dispersion images with much better resolution and therefore represents a tool for more accurate separation and determination of phase velocities for different modes. Mode separation results in wavefield components that individually possess great potential for increasing horizontal resolution of S-wave velocity-field determinations. Amplitude corrections can significantly improve the accuracy of phase-velocity estimates from mixed-modal wavefields. Results from two simple models demonstrate how dramatic topographic changes can distort wavefields. This finding was the catalyst for suggesting that a topographic correction should be considered for surface-wave data acquired on a rugged ground surface. Phase-velocity inversion is an ill-posed problem. Rayleigh-wave sensitivity analysis reveals the difficulty in estimating S-wave velocities for a model with a low-velocity layer. Constraints in the model space are therefore necessary. Approximating cutoffs could help build a better initial model and provide critical information about the subsurface when higher modes are present.
Surface Waves Suppression By High-Resolution Linear Radon Transform

Abstract:In petroleum seismic exploration records, surface waves act as disturbing waves which should be removed from the records to raise signal-to-noise ratio before de-convolution and stacking. The typical characteristics that enable us to separate surface waves from body waves lie in their difference in velocity and frequency. In the time-space (t-x) domain, surface waves and body waves interfere with each other so it is difficult to separate them. However, it is feasible to separate them in the frequency-velocity (f-v) domain because of different velocities and frequencies that they behave, which provides a theoretical foundation for suppressing surface waves in the f-v domain. In this paper, a shot gather is transformed from the t-s domain to the f-v domain by high-resolution linear Radon transform, and then surface waves can be suppressed in the f-v domain. Afterwards, the seismic data in which surface waves have been suppressed are transformed back to the t-x domain to achieve success in suppressing surface waves. Results of synthetic and real-world examples demonstrate the feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Coherent microwave radar is one of the effective devices for ocean wave measurements. However, the accuracy of wave inversion is significantly affected by the non-gravity wave components (referred to as non-wave components in this work) such as broken waves and shadows in the sea echoes. In this article, a new method based on the Radon transform and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is proposed to suppress the non-wave components. First, the spatial–temporal velocities are calculated based on the raw data obtained from coherent microwave radar. Second, the Radon transform and DFT are performed on the spatial–temporal velocities to obtain the distribution of the spatial–temporal velocities in the Radon–Fourier transform domain. Following this, non-wave components are eliminated in accordance with the phase velocity and frequency distribution of the wave components. To validate the method, we analyzed the experimental data collected with a coherent S-band radar in Weihai in December 2021. After removing the non-wave components from the radar echoes, we invert three wave parameters including peak wave period, peak wave direction, and significant wave height and compare them with the in situ data. The results indicate that the method can effectively remove the non-wave components from the wave echoes without any empirical parameters.

Abstract:The existence of multiple waves in seismic data has a substantial impact on earthquake imaging, inversion, and interpretation results. As a result, multiples are often suppressed as noise prior to seismic data preattack processing. Currently, there are two primary methods for suppressing multiple reflections in seismic data. One is a filtering technique based on geometric differences in the seismic waves, while the other is based on wave equation methods. The Radon transform, which suppresses multiple reflections, belongs to the class of geometric seismic diffraction filtering techniques. In the process of seismic data processing, it effectively separates multiple reflections from seismic data by utilizing the characteristic differences between primary and multiple reflections, thereby achieving noise attenuation and improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the data. This article primarily investigates the current state of methods for suppressing multiple reflections based on the Radon transform, both domestically and internationally. By introducing various forms and fundamental principles of the Radon transform, this study analyzes and compares the adaptability and pros and cons of each type of Radon transform. The high-precision Radon transform can effectively address the sawtooth phenomenon and energy dispersion issues that arise in the least-squares Radon transform. It also highlights the challenges associated with suppressing multiple reflections in the Radon transform and provides a glimpse into future developments.
Improving Receiver Function Imaging with High-Resolution Radon Transform

Abstract:SUMMARY The receiver function (RF) method is one of the most widely used passive seismic approaches for imaging subsurface structures from shallow sedimentary basins to the deep Earth’s interior. RF is typically computed with a deconvolution operation that enables separating structural response from source–time function embedded in teleseismic wavefields. However, seismic recordings of temporary arrays are often contaminated with strong random noise and even amplitude bias due to poor installation conditions. Both factors can cause instability to deconvolution and severely degrade the accuracy, thereby the imaging quality, of the RF method. This underscores the importance of effective denoising algorithms in RF processing. In this study, we explore the application of high-resolution Radon transform (RT) to improve the conventional RF imaging workflow. Contrary to the commonly implemented post-processing (i.e. after deconvolution) noise suppression schemes, we introduce the RT to data pre-processing (i.e. before deconvolution). This method seeks a sparse representation of teleseismic wavefields in the τ–p domain by iteratively solving a least-squares minimization problem with the conjugate gradient algorithm. Synthetic test with a 2-D step-Moho model shows that non-linear phase arrivals including incoherent noise and diffraction energy are effectively removed in resulting RFs, with the signal-to-noise ratio increased by as much as ∼8 dB. Real data experiments using the Hi-CLIMB network in the Tibetan Plateau demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed workflow in regularizing the wavefield and improving the coherence of converted phases across the recording array. Consequently, imaging results of common conversion point stacking using a single and a group of teleseismic events both recover subtle converted phases from the Moho and potential lithospheric discontinuities that are otherwise obscured by noise arising from the conventional processing workflow. This study highlights the necessity of wavefield regularization in the RF method and calls for improved data processing techniques in array-based seismic imaging.

Abstract:A new nondestructive pressure-measurement method that can avoid potential safety problems caused by applying traditional pressure-measurement methods in vessels is presented. This method utilizes ultrasonic Rayleigh waves and critically refracted longitudinal waves ( L CR waves). The change in pressure induces a change in the stresses in the vessel's wall. According to the acoustoelastic principle, variations in stress affect the wave velocity. Meanwhile, the velocity of ultrasonic waves can also be affected by the change in temperature. Considering the effect of the pressure and temperature of the vessel on both the wave velocity and propagation distance of the ultrasonic waves, the relationship between ultrasonic transit time delay and both the pressure and temperature change is established. Furthermore, a modified model of pressure measurement is deduced. With this model, a reference method for temperature compensation, without temperature measurement, is presented. The reference method utilizes Rayleigh waves and L CR waves. These two kinds of ultrasonic waves travel along the axial direction of the vessel's wall, bearing the same changes in pressure and temperature. The relationship between the reference transit time delay between two ultrasonic transducers and the pressure is established through theoretical analysis and calibration tests on an air vessel. To reduce the error caused by the unevenness of temperature distribution, which might occur in the vessel's and the transducer's material, a new kind of transducer is used in the experiment, which has two piezoelectric elements and can be used for the Rayleigh and L CR waves. A pair of such transducers is mounted along the axial direction of the air vessel. The penetration area of the Rayleigh wave is almost the same as that of the L CR wave with the use of the new transducers. Comparison tests between the new transducers and the custom-used transducers show that the new transducers have better repeatability. Finally, using the air vessel as a specimen, experimental results show that the reference method is effective and that the pressure values calculated using the reference method are close to the manometer-measured values.
Rayleigh wave attenuation tomography based on ambient noise interferometry: methods and an application to Northeast China

Abstract:Summary Although ambient noise interferometry has been extensively utilized for seismic velocity tomography, its application in retrieving attenuation remains limited. This study presents a comprehensive workflow for extracting Rayleigh wave amplitude and attenuation from ambient noise, which consists of three phases: (1) retrieval of empirical Green's Functions (EGFs), (2) selection and correction of amplitude measurements, and (3) inversion of attenuation, site amplification, and noise intensity terms. Throughout these processes, an ‘asynchronous’ temporal flattening method is employed to generate high-quality EGFs while preserving relative amplitudes between stations. Additionally, a novel “t-symmetry” criterion is proposed for data selection along with the signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, 2-D sensitivity kernels are utilized to estimate the focusing/defocusing effect, which is then corrected in amplitude measurements. These procedures are designed to deliver reliable attenuation measurements while maintaining flexibility and automation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed noise-based attenuation tomography approach, we apply it to a linear array, NCISP-6, located in NE China. The obtained results correlate reasonably well with known geological structures. Specifically, at short periods, high attenuation anomalies delineate the location of major sedimentary basins and faults; while at longer periods, a notable rapid increase of attenuation is observed beneath the Moho discontinuity. Given that attenuation measurements are more sensitive to porosity, defect concentration, temperature, melt, and volatile ratio than seismic velocities, noise-based attenuation tomography provides important additional constraints for exploring the crustal and upper mantle structures.

Abstract:Ground-roll is a main type of strong noises in petroleum seismic exploration. Suppression of this kind of noise is essential to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of seismic data. In the time–offset (t–x) domain, the ground-roll noise and the effective waves (e.g., direct waves, reflections) overlap with each other in terms of time and frequency, which make it difficult to suppress ground roll noise in exploration seismic data. However, significant different features shown in the frequency–velocity (f–v) domain make it possible to separate ground roll noise and effective waves effectively. We propose a novel method to separate them using high-resolution linear Radon transform (LRT). Amplitude and phase information is preserved during the proposed quasi-reversible transformation. The reversibility and linearity of LRT provide a foundation for ground-roll noise suppression in the f–v domain. We extract the energy of ground-roll noise in the f–v domain, and transform the extracted part back to the t–x domain to obtain the ground-roll noise shot gather. Finally, the extracted ground-roll noise is subtracted from the original data arithmetically. Theoretical tests and a real world example have been implemented to illustrate that the ground-roll noise suppression can be achieved with negligible distortion of the effective signals. When compared with the adaptive ground-roll attenuation method and the K–L transform method, the real world example shows the superiority of our method in suppressing the ground-roll noise and preserving the amplitude and phase information of effective waves.
A Strategy for Obtaining Travel Time in 3-D Rayleigh Wave Tomography

Abstract:The spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) is widely used to reverse the travel time in threedimensional (3-D) Rayleigh wave tomography, in which data processing is essential to reduce high-frequency harmonics and diffraction. However, data processing depends on visual judgment and is not suitable for large-scale detection. This study proposes a strategy based on theoretical derivation to process data for the SASW method that can be regarded as an improved SASW method. It retains the component of the Rayleigh wave by setting the part after the maximum value of the signal to zero. Compared with traditional visual recognition, the improved SASW method demonstrates higher efficiency in obtaining travel time in 3-D Rayleigh wave tomography. Numerical experiments were conducted to detect voids with different locations, depths, and sizes using the improved SASW method. A small probability event was used to quantitatively determine the velocity range to distinguish a void from the measured region. The results show that the improved method is robust, and the small probability event can effectively identify voids.
Crustal Imaging with Noisy Teleseismic Receiver Functions Using Sparse Radon Transforms

Abstract:ABSTRACT The receiver function (RF) is a widely used crustal imaging technique. In principle, it assumes relatively noise-free traces that can be used to target receiver-side structures following source deconvolution. In practice, however, mode conversions and reflections may be severely degraded by noisy conditions, hampering robust estimation of crustal parameters. In this study, we use a sparsity-promoting Radon transform to decompose the observed RF traces into their wavefield contributions, that is, direct conversions, multiples, and incoherent noise. By applying a crustal mask on the Radon-transformed RF, we obtain noise-free RF traces with only Moho conversions and reflections. We demonstrate, using a synthetic experiment and a real-data example from the Sierra Nevada, that our approach can effectively denoise the RFs and extract the underlying Moho signals. This greatly improves the robustness of crustal structure recovery as exemplified by subsequent H−κ stacking. We further demonstrate, using a station sitting on loose sediments in the Upper Mississippi embayment, that a combination of our approach and frequency-domain filtering can significantly improve crustal imaging in reverberant settings. In the presence of complex crustal structures, for example, dipping Moho, intracrustal layers, and crustal anisotropy, we recommend caution when applying our proposed approach due to the difficulty of interpreting a possibly more complicated Radon image. We expect that our technique will enable high-resolution crustal imaging and inspire more applications of Radon transforms in seismic signal processing.

Abstract:Summary Reflections provide the most valuable information about the stratigraphy in seismic exploration. On land reflections are always contaminated by surface waves, high amplitude, low frequency, and low velocity and also dispersive. All these characteristics enable surface wave to be separated from reflections. A particular complication is that surface waves are dispersive. Then, frequencies of surface waves and reflections are overlapped in the spectral domain, the same can be found in the f-k domain. Traditional processing from doing surgical muting may cause damage to the data such as waveform distortion and narrowing the spectral band of the signal, especially when the surface waves are strongly dispersive. In this paper, a new method named inversedispersion algorithm is presented to suppress surface waves that overlap with reflections in frequency. We use the linear Radon transform and Fourier transform to find the dispersion curve of surface wave. With the help of dispersion curve and offset information, phases of every trace are moved. The phase-moving step is named the inverse-dispersion method. After the inverse-dispersion step, surface waves with different frequencies are transformed to be nearly parallel and away from reflections, which are easily separated. As it should be, the phase is moved back after surface wave elimination. In this paper the method is tested on field data, showing a good result with excellent protection of the reflections.

Abstract:This article proposes a new surface wave suppression method based on nonsubsampled Shearlet transform (NSST). First, we use a frequency wavenumber (FK) Filter to extract surface wave noise from seismic data. We then apply a Shearlet transform to both the original data and the isolated surface wave, facilitating the creation of distinct Shearlet domain subbands characterized by diverse scales and directions. Next, we calculate the similarity coefficients between each corresponding subband of the original data and separated surface wave and use the standard deviation as the criterion for subband selection to enable adaptive selection. Then, mean thresholding and Bayesian separation algorithms are applied to suppress the surface wave components in the subbands. Finally, we integrate the selected subbands and perform an inverse NSST to reconstruct the surface wave-free seismic data. Replacing the traditional subband selection method with the adaptive method can effectively improve the efficiency of surface wave suppression, and the combination of mean value thresholding and Bayesian separation algorithm suppresses the surface wave noise in the subbands, resulting in high-quality reconstructed data.

Abstract:The strong background radiation in high enthalpy hypersonic shock tunnels has posed severe challenges for measurement using luminescent coatings. We proposed a solution for reducing background radiation from time-resolved temperature-sensitive paint (TSP) measurement in a hypersonic flow with Ma = 6.5 and T0 = 3525 K. The TSP was applied on an inlet ramp model, and the images were taken by a high-speed camera at 2 kHz under a modulated excitation. The strong background radiation led to a low signal-to-noise ratio and significant errors for the first half of the 130-ms test duration. Accordingly, three noise reduction methods were developed and evaluated based on temporal reconstruction, spatial reconstruction and robust principal component analysis (RPCA), respectively. The RPCA method showed the best performance that successfully recovered high-quality TSP data for a majority of test duration (t ≥ 40 ms).

Abstract:In this study, we use the critical slowing down (CSD) theory to identify the precursory anomalies of groundwater radon based on the 1000-day continuous data from 8 monitoring stations in Yunnan Province, China during the seismically active period of 1993–1996. The low-frequency and high-frequency information were extracted from raw groundwater radon data to calculate their one-step lag autocorrelation (AR-1) and variance, respectively, in order to identify the precursory anomalies. The results show that the anomaly characteristics can be divided into three categories: sudden jump anomalies, persistent anomalies, and fluctuation anomalies. The highest average seismic recognition rate is 72.78%, based on the high-frequency information’s autocorrelation, while the lowest is 45.08%, based on the low-frequency information’s variance. The crustal activity and the change in hydrogeological conditions are possibly the main factors influencing groundwater radon anomalies in the selected period in the study area. There is a positive correlation between the anomaly occurrence time and epicentral distance when epicentral distance is less than 300 km, which may be related to the seismogenic modes and hydrogeological conditions. This study provides a reference for identifying groundwater radon anomalies before earthquakes by mathematical methods.
