Abstract:The Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ tri-doped Y7O6F9 phosphor is synthesized by a typical hydrothermal method. The Y7O6F9 : 0.6%Er (3+)/0.2%Tm3+/15%Yb3+ phosphor is selected for the study. The up-conversion characteristics and temperature sensing performances of the phosphor are investigated under the excitation of 980 nm laser. The temperature sensing performances are investigated in the temperature range of 306 -546 K based on thermal and non-thermal coupled levels by using fluorescence intensity ratio technology. The maximum sensitivity is 54.3 x 10(-3)K(-1) at 546 K, which is based on F-3(2),(3) (red emission at 695 nm of Tm3+) and S-4(3/2) (green emission at 545 nm of Er3+) levels. After comparison, it is found that the sensing sensitivity of Y7O6F9: 0.6%Er (3+)/0.2%Tm3+/15%Yb3+ phosphor is relatively high. The excellent temperature sensing performances of the phosphor are verified. What's more, the white luminescent emission of the phosphor is achieved by adjusting excitation power and sample temperature during the experiment. And the luminescent emission color of the phosphor can be modulated widely. The above experimental results not only enable us to have a deeper understanding of tunable upconversion luminescent emission and optical temperature sensing, but also provide a significant step for high sensitivity thermometry, white light illuminating and color displaying. Photoluminescence properties of Er3+ and Eu3+ ions based on oxide host for optical temperature sensing with high sensitivity

Abstract:Motivated from increasing demands of non-contact optical temperature sensing, the Yb3+-Er3+ and Eu3+ doped NaY9Si6O26 (NYS) oxide phosphors were designed by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase purity of the as-prepared samples was checked from XRD patterns. For the upconversion luminescence in NYS:Yb3+,Er3+, the optimal Er3+ doping content was determined to be 1 mol%, and the characteristic emission peaks of Er3+ were observed in the region of 500-700 nm. In Eu3+ activated NYS phosphors, it has been found that the emissions originating in 5D1 and 5D0 levels demonstrate different change tendencies in intensity with Eu3+ doping concentration. By studying the temperature-dependent luminescent spectra, it was indicated that the emissions intensities from different excited states of Er3+ change differently with temperature. Two kinds of fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies were used in NYS:10%Yb3+,1%Er3+, containing thermally-coupled levels and non-thermally-coupled levels. In the NYS:3%Eu3+ phosphor, it was found that the FIR for 577 and 536 nm emissions follows a linear relation with temperature. The high sensitivities in the present phosphors indicate the potential application in optical temperature sensing.
Phonon-assisted Upconversion Luminescence Thermal Enhancement of NaYS2:Yb3+,Nd3+ for Optical Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Upconversion luminescence presents obvious advantages in optical temperature sensing, nevertheless the application in complex scenarios is limited by luminescence thermal quenching. Herein, NaYS2:Yb3+,Nd3+ phosphors are synthesized by the solid-gas reaction method and used for temperature sensing. A series of emissions for Nd3+ from visible to near-infrared region are achieved based on energy transfer from Yb3+ to Nd3+ under 980 nm excitation. With elevating the temperature, significant thermal enhancement effect of nearly three orders of magnitude is detected in near-infrared emission of 4F7/2 -> 4I9/2, which is attributed to phonon-assisted energy transfer of Yb3+-> Nd3+ and the corresponding thermal population effect. The thermal behaviors of thermally coupled energy levels for 4G7/2/2G9/2 and 4F7/2/4F5/2 in NaYS2:Yb3+,Nd3+ are evaluated by luminescence intensity ratio technique. Remarkably, the optical thermometer based on the enhanced emission of 4F7/ 2/4F5/2 shows excellent temperature measurement performance, which is expected to be applied in widetemperature-range and highly-sensitive temperature sensing. These results not only provide a pathway to realize high performance temperature sensing, but also heighten the understanding of UC emission thermal enhancement.

Abstract:The optical temperature sensor based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) offers significant advantages for rapid and non-contact temperature measurements. However, the application of optical temperature sensors is limited by the challenge of identifying advanced materials with high response sensitivity. In this study, phosphor and single-crystal states stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2 with Er3+ doping were prepared by solid-state reaction method and Czochralski method, respectively, for promising optical thermometry applications. The structure of the phosphor and single-crystal state samples were investigated. High-purity upconversion (UC) emissions were achieved from stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+ samples with a maximum green-to-red ratio up to 70.3, which opens up numerous possibilities for their application as pure-green color converters. Besides, the UC emission spectra were monitored with respect to temperature, and the fluorescence intensity ratios (FIRs) of the 2H11/2→4I15/2 and 4S3/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions were investigated to evaluate the optical temperature sensing behaviors of NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+. Importantly, the distinctions of optical temperature sensing behaviors between phosphor and single-crystal state samples were analyzed. The results suggest that stoichiometric NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+, especially for single-crystal state NaYb(MoO4)2:Er3+, hold great promise as FIR-based optical temperature sensors. In addition, the results can also open up the research interests for employing stoichiometric materials and single crystal materials as optical thermometry applications.

Abstract:Under 980 nm excitation, the temperature-dependent green upconversion emissions from Er3+/Yb3+-codoped CaWO4 phosphor were studied at temperatures from 294 to 923 K. By using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the maximum sensitivity for temperature measurement achieved here is approximately 0.0092 K-1, which is much higher than previously reported temperature sensors based on the fluorescence of Er3+ ions in other host materials. With the efficient upconversion fluorescence, the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped CaWO4 is a very promising candidate for optical high-temperature sensors with high sensitivity and good accuracy. The thermal coupled energy level- and non-thermal coupled energy level-based luminescence intensity ratio thermometry of the sample demonstrated that these two methods can be used to test temperature. Two green emissions (520 and 550 nm), radiated from H-2(11/2)/S-4(3/2) levels, were monitored, and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.013 K-1 at 297 K. The emissions located in the first biological window (650, 692 and 800 nm) were monitored and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.027 (R-692/650) and 0.028 K-1 (R-692/800) at 297 K, respectively. These results indicate that Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors have potential applications for temperature determination in the visible and the first biological window ranges.
Anti-thermal Quenching and Temperature Sensing Properties of Er3+/Yb3+ Co-Doped Sc2O3 Phosphors

Abstract:Up-conversion luminescence from rare earth doped phosphor is a potential candidate as non-contact temperature sensor. In this work, different Er3+ concentration doped Sc2O3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors were prepared through typical sol-gel method. The emission intensity reached the maximum as the doping concentration of Er3+ was 1.0 mol%. While, different from high concentration (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0) of Er3+ doped samples, an abnormal enhancement in the two green emissions and red emission in Sc2O3: 0.3 mol% Er3+/2 mol% Yb3+ phosphors was observed through elevate temperature and the enhancement factor reaches 1.3 as the temperature changed from 303 to 513 K. The reason for this concentration dependent thermal enhancement could be interpreted by the competition between increased energy transfer and non-radiative transition. The temperature sensing properties of samples, including relatively sensitivity, temperature resolution and repeatability were investigated and the maximum values reached 1.03 × 10-2 K-1 (303 K), 0.524 K (303 K) and 99.65 % (303--513 K), respectively, in Sc2O3: 1 mol% Er3+/2 mol% Yb3+ phosphors. The results imply that they have good temperature sensing ability and can be used as an optical temperature probe in research and production.
Power-dependent up-conversion emissions and temperature sensing properties of NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors

Abstract:Rare earth doped luminescent materials have unique up-conversion properties and can be applied to optical temperature sensing. In this work, the power-dependent emission intensity from bare core NaYF4:Er/Yb and core-shell structured NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors and the temperature sensing properties of NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors are investigated. The NaYF4:Er/Yb and NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors are prepared through typical co-precipitation method. The enhancement factor of emissions located at 520, 540 and 654 nm reach 1.51, 1.42 and 1.75, respectively, which is originated to the suppression of surface quenching. The enhancement factor decreases slowly with excitation power increasing due to the more sensitivity to laser power of the bare core phosphors. In addition, the green emissions (520 and 540 nm) exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behaviors, including relatively sensing sensitivity and thermal repeatability stability. The maximal relatively sensing sensitivity reaches 1.2 % K−1 at 294 K and The value of thermal repeatability stability reaches 98.4%.

Abstract:Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped ZnWO4 phosphors were synthesized by a solid state reaction method and their structure, photoluminescence and temperature sensing properties were characterized. The color-tunable upconversion emissions (from green to red) were observed by increasing the doped Er3+/Yb3+ concentration. The temperature sensing properties were studied by using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique in the temperature range of 83-583 K, and high performance was obtained. The maximum sensitivity is found to be 0.0099 K-1 at 583 K. The XRD Rietveld refinement revealed that the phosphors crystallized in monoclinic structure with the space group P2/c (13) at room temperature. The results suggest that the phosphors could be an exceptional choice for next generation luminescence-based temperature sensing devices as well as in multiple biolabels.
Optical temperature-sensing phosphors with high sensitivities in a wide temperature range based on different strategies

Abstract:Rare earth ions doped luminescent materials are considered as the potential candidates with a wide range of applications because of their unique optical characteristics. In this work, the single-phase Yb3+-Er3+ and Yb3+-Tm3+ co-doped La1.55SiO4.33 (LS) phosphors of hexagonal system were reported for optical thermometer. Three characteristic emissions of Er3+ were observed at 521, 553 and 659 nm in the LS:Yb3+,Er3+ under 980 nm excitation, which are assigned to the 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions, respectively. In the LS:Yb3+,Tm3+ phosphors, one can find two strong emissions at 474 and 790 nm and two weak emissions at 648 and 685 nm. Their upconversion (UC) luminescence mechanisms were studied from the pump-power-dependent spectra. When the samples were measured at various temperatures, the spectral features revealed that different fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies can be used to character their optical temperature-sensing behaviors. The sensor sensitivities by using thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) and non-TCELs were determined from the temperature-dependent UC emission spectra, which have been improved compared with those of some other reported optical temperature-sensing luminescent materials. The device fabrication indicated that the developed UC phosphors are promising for applications in optical thermometer.

The temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of emission bands centered at 525nm and 545nm was measured in the temperature range of 160–300 K under excitation of a 980nm diode laser. The monotonous increase of FIR with temperature shows that this material can be used for temperature sensing. The dependence of the FIR on temperature is fitted with an exponential function and the effective energy difference obtained is 752cm−1, which gives further a temperature sensitivity of 1.20%K−1 at 300K. The FIR technique was then used to study the effect of heating caused by laser excitation under various powers.

Abstract:Optical temperature sensors have become a research hotspot in recent years due to their non-contact feature. In this study, Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped ZnS phosphors (1:3, 1:6, 1:9, 1:12, 1:15, 1:19) were prepared by co-precipitation method. The up-conversion and down-conversion luminescence performance of the phosphors was studied. It was found that the luminescence performance is optimized when the doping molar ratio is 1:9. Based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology of non-thermal coupling energy level, the temperature sensing characteristics of ZnS:Er3+/Yb3+ (1:9) phosphors were studied in the temperature range of 313–533 K. The results show a maximum absolute sensitivity of 1.9 % K−1 and a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.7 % K−1. In terms of multifunctionality, this work also designed a flexible film based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to explore its anti-counterfeiting properties. The results of this work demonstrate the great potential of ZnS:Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors for optical temperature measurements and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:In this work, Al–CaSrSiO4:Yb3+,Er3+ temperature sensing materials were prepared by the high-temperature solid-phase reaction method, and the upconversion photoluminescence characteristics and optical temperature sensing properties were measured and discussed. Two intense green emissions were observed under the excitation of 980 nm semiconductor laser. The temperature sensing performance of the thermally coupled energy levels was evaluated based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technique in the temperature range from 303 to 723 K, and the maximum sensor sensitivity of the synthesized sample reaches 0.0059 K−1 at 453 K. Furthermore, the relationships between the absolute sensitivity S A and temperature T as well as between S A and energy gap ΔE are analyzed in depth. And then, a strategy to quickly match the temperature measurement range to a suitable temperature sensing material was proposed, and the as-prepared Al–CaSrSiO4:Yb3+,Er3+ sample was determined to be suitable for measuring the high-temperature environment. These observations suggest that Al–CaSrSiO4:Yb3+,Er3+ samples have promising applications for non-contact optical temperature measurement at high temperature and high sensitivity.

Abstract:A simple and rapid grinding method for preparing Er3+-doped and Er3+/Yb(3+)co-doped Cs3Bi2Cl9 upconversion phosphors was developed. We avoid to employ strong acids as reaction solvents, aligning with the principles of green chemistry. By controlling the thermal treatment temperature and adding BiCl3, a reversible phase transformation process between Cs3Bi2Cl9 and Cs3BiCl6 perovskite phosphors was achieved. The Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped Cs3Bi2Cl9 phosphors emit green light under 980 nm excitation, whereas Cs3BiCl6 phosphors emit red light. Their temperature sensing performance was tested through variable-temperature processes. Compared to Er3+-doped Cs3Bi2Cl9 phosphors, the co-doped Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors have a higher relative sensitivity of 1.60 % K-1. Compared to previously reported materials, Cs3Bi2Cl9 phosphors show enhanced sensitivity in temperature sensing. The study demonstrates that lead-free halide perovskites' unique color-tunability not only underscores the innovativeness of this synthetic strategy but also provides a significant technological foundation for temperature sensing applications. Given their environmental friendliness and facile preparation process, these phosphors possess notable advantages for industrial production and hold promise as potential candidates for next-generation high-performance phosphor materials.

Abstract:Up-conversion phosphor is a potential candidate as non-contact temperature sensor because of its unjammable and unique detection abilities. In this work, we investigate the influence of Yb3+ concentration on the emission color, thermal sensing and optical heater behavior of Er3+ doped Y6O5F8 phosphor. Our results show that the emission color of Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Y6O5F8 powder changes from green to yellow with the Yb3+ concentration increasing. Importantly, the temperature sensing sensitivities of Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Y6O5F8 powder reach 0.008, 0.009, 0.010 and 0.011K−1 as the sample doped with 2%, 5%, 8% and 11% Yb3+ at 476K, respectively. Moreover, the temperature of high Yb3+ concentration sample shows preferable optical heating behavior, whose temperature is ascended by a large value of 94K when the excitation pump power density changes from 1.0 to 13.1Wcm−2. These results suggest Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Y6O5F8 powder has great potential in colorful display, temperature sensing and optical heating.

Abstract:In this article, the tunable-color emission properties of Ce3+/Eu3+ in NaY9Si6O26 phosphors were reported. Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions had effectively incorporated the sites of Na+ and Y3+ ions, which were revealed by Rietveld refinements. The site occupation preference of Ce3+ in cationic sites were discussed. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu3+ ion under the 312 nm excitation was ascribed to dipole-dipole interaction mechanism based on Dexter's energy transfer theory of multipolar interaction, which makes NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ produce tunable-color emission. Additionally, the temperature dependent emission spectra of the powders were studied. Temperature sensing performances were reflected by the fluorescence intensity ratio based on different temperature dependent variation tendency of Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions. The maximum values of the absolute and relative sensor sensitivities of NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors were about 0.0328 K−1 and 0.95 % K−1, respectively. Above all, NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors show a promising prospect for optical thermometer applications.

Abstract:In this work, NaYF4: 2 mol % Er3+, 20 mol % Yb3+ phosphors with cubic and hexagonal phases were prepared by co-precipitation method with different reaction temperature. The multi-photon up-conversion processes and optical temperature sensing properties are discussed. The emission spectra of hexagonal phase show higher emission intensity and lower red-to-green ratio (R/G), which are attributed to the decrease of local symmetric. And the number of photons (n), participated in the up-conversion processes, declines as the phase changes from cubic to hexagonal. This can be originated to the exhaustion of electrons on ground state level: 4I15/2 in hexagonal phase. And the fitting n of green emissions decline more obviously than red emission with temperature increasing. The temperature dependent FIR is fitted and the fitted function implies that the energy gap ∆E increases as the phase changes to hexagonal. And the max relative sensitivity reaches 0.012 K−1 at 300 K. Thus, NaYF4: 2 mol % Er3+, 20 mol % Yb3+ phosphors with hexagonal phase have higher S R and can be promising in FIR-based temperature sensing.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.
