Abstract:A method for the direct one-pot synthesis of amine-stabilized gold nanoparticles using 3-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSP dien) is described. The amine groups of this bifunctional molecule act as a stabilizer for gold nanoparticles as they form by reduction of HAuCl4. Highly stable gold nanoparticles with sizes tunable between 8 and 20 nm can be readily obtained. This method is quite simple to implement and environmentally benign as there is no need to add an external reducing reagent. The incorporated siloxy functionality was subsequently used to form a silica shell around the gold particle.

Abstract:Surface functionalized and defect enriched carbon nanotubes (oCNTs) by green ozone/H2O treatment can efficiently anchor gold nanoparticles. This Au/oCNT could be stabilized and well dispersed after thermal treatment and showed robust catalytic activity (20.6 mmol gcat-1 h-1) for the oxidative self-coupling of benzylamine to imine in solvent free conditions.

Abstract:Here, we first report a facile one-step one-phase synthetic route to achieve size-controlled gold micro/nanoparticles with narrow size distribution by using o-diaminobenzene as a reducing agent in the presence of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) via a simple wet-chemical approach. All experimental data including that from scanning-electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques indicates that the gold micro/nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were produced in high yield (approximately 100%).

Abstract:Amphiphilic Janus gold nanoparticles(GNPs) are prospected to encapsulate drug molecules in cancer therapy and to serve as heterogeneous catalysts at oil/water interfaces, where Janus GNPs with different sizes are required. In this work, multiple-sized precursor GNPs were synthesized by seeded growth method protected with tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine oxide(THPO) ligand molecule, and a ligand exchange reaction with triphenylphosphine(PPh3) at the toluene/water interface was employed to prepare amphiphilic Janus GNPs. UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) analyses indicate that the as-prepared GNPs are nanocrystals with average diameters of 2.3 nm, 9.5 nm, 16.1 nm and 18.8 nm, respectively. Contact angle, Raman and X-ray photonic spectroscopy(XPS) analyses reveal that the selfassembled GNP films exhibit hydrophilic on one side and hydrophobic on another, owing to the adsorption of hydrophilic ligands(THPO and THP) and a similar amount of hydrophobic ligands(PPh3 and PPh3O).Angle-resolved XPS analysis further demonstrates that the individual GNPs actually possess hydrophilic and hydrophobic compartments on the surface, which regularly packed by supramolecular interactions at toluene/water interface to form the self-assembled GNP films.

Abstract:Despite many seeded methods having been achieved to synthesize spherical nanoparticles, the one-pot synthesis of Au nanospheres with perfect morphology is still a challenge due to nanocrystals tending to adopt a polyhedral morphology to minimize their surface free energy. We present here a one-pot synthesis for precisely shaped and monodispersed single-crystalline Au nanospheres with an ultrasmooth surface and tunable sizes (30–100 nm). During the synthesis, Au nanospheres undergo a unique morphology change from octahedral to spherical shape via selectively surface self-polishing etching induced by the O<sub>2</sub>/Cl<sup>–</sup> pair and Ag ion dynamically tailored regrowth direction. The localized surface plasmon resonance property of the Au nanospheres with different sizes is found to match well with the theoretical prediction because of their perfect spherical shapes and uniform sizes. Moreover, this protocol can achieve a large-scale synthesis (more than 500 mL for one time) of Au nanospheres solution with extreme stability due to isotropic surface tension (stored in ethylene glycol for more than 24 months). Abstract:A simple but effective aqueous-organic phase-transfer method for gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles was developed on the basis of the decrease of the PVP's solubility in water with the temperature increase. The present method is superior in the transfer efficiency of highly stable nanoparticles to the common phase-transfer methods. The gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles transferred to the 1-butanol phase dispersed well, especially silver and platinum particles almost kept the previous particle size. Electrochemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles in an oil-water system was achieved by controlling the reaction temperature at 80 degrees C, which provides great conveniences for collecting metal particles at the oil/water interface and especially for fabricating dense metal nanoparticle films. A technique to fabricate gold nanofilms on solid supports was also established. The shapes and sizes of gold nanoparticles as the building blocks may be controllable through changing reaction conditions.

Abstract:Citrate-capped gold nanoparticles with narrow diameter distribution were prepared by the reduction of chloroauric acid with borohydride. After the gold nanoparticles were transferred to toluene solution through ligand conformation change, close-packed two-dimensional nanocrystal lattices were obtained on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) copper grids by evaporating approximately 10 µL of concentrated particle dispersion. The formation of the thiolate gold nanoparticles was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and FTIR spectra. The 2D Fourier transform power spectra of the monolayer confirmed the supperlattices’ hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, long-range-ordered bilayer superlattices, of which the nanoparticles in the top layer piled on the ones in the bottom layer, could also be observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:A biocompatible, water-soluble, lower molecular weight chitosan has been used for, via a one-pot high-temperature refluxing strategy, the simultaneous synthesis and assembly of gold nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet−visible−near-infrared (UV−vis−NIR) extinction spectra allowed us to identify the existence of nanoparticle linear aggregates. Importantly, through such a preparation procedure, the chain length of the nanoparticle aggregates could be tuned by facile adjustment of the reaction reagent ratio. Further, the growth and assembly processes of gold nanoparticles were studied by quenching the intermediate reaction solutions with an ice−water bath. The structure evolution proceeded through a two-stage process: initial generation of isolated nanoparticles, followed by the interconnection of nanoparticles into an aggregated morphology. Abstract:Gold nanoparticles were synthesized via a bolaform amphiphile with hydrophilic ethyleneamine spacer at a liquid-liquid interface. By stirring the aqueous solution containing AuCl4- ions with the chloroform solution of bolaform amphiphile, AuCl4- ions were transferred into the oil phase and reduced to gold nanoparticles. UV-vis and FT-IR spectral measurements indicated that the bolaform amphiphile could serve as both capping and reducing agents. Crystalline gold nanoparticles were predominantly obtained if the bolaform amphiphile solutions with appropriate concentrations were applied. The generated gold nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force spectroscopy (AFM). It is predicted that gold and other novel metal nanostructures may be produced by bolaform amphiphiles whose properties can be well-controlled by designing different headgroups, spacers or substituted groups.

Abstract:The judicious selection of capping agents has been proven essential for the one-pot synthesis of high-purity two-dimensional noble-metal nanocrystals. In this study, we highlight the synergistic effect of using lauramidopropylamine oxide, a typical zwitterionic surfactant, in conjunction with the quaternary ammonium surfactant octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. This pairing facilitates the production of Au nanoplates distinguished by their reduced lateral dimensions ( i.e. , sub-50 nm) and distinctive atomic packing. This ability to vary the structural features enables the Au nanoplates to exhibit enhanced electrochemical activity for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) in an alkaline medium, characterized by improved reaction kinetics and prolonged cycling stability. DFT simulations suggested that the lower energy barrier of the rate-determining step on Au(211) compared to Au(111) and Au(100) indicates a higher electrochemical activity for the Au(211) surface. The present work underscores the potential of amine oxide-based zwitterionic surfactants in the controlled synthesis of two-dimensional Au nanocrystals, a method that could be potentially adapted for use with other noble metals and/or alloys.

Abstract:Interface/emulsion catalysis is an effective approach for many organic and inorganic chemical reactions. Positioning catalysts at the interface is essential for highly efficient interface/emulsion catalysis. The sheet-like Janus nanostructures may have great advantages in stabilizing emulsions and improving reaction efficiency. In this work, by using a simple emulsion reaction and photodeposition, we successfully prepare the Janus nanosheets with opposite sides composed of AuNPs/PdNPs and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) respectively, referred to as AuNP-rGO/PdNP-rGO Janus nanosheets. Due to the distinct hydrophilicities on opposite sides, the prepared Janus nanosheets demonstrate high efficiency in emulsion stabilization and emulsion catalysis. By introducing the prepared PdNP-rGO and AuNP-rGO Janus nanosheets in emulsion reactions, highly efficient hydrogenation of p-nitroanisole and photocatalytic degradation of Nile red are demonstrated. This work provides a simple and cost-effective method to prepare Janus nanosheets and realize highly efficient emulsion reactions, and this strategy can be extended to promote many other interface/emulsion reactions.

Abstract:We report on a robust approach to the size-selective and template-free synthesis of asymmetrically functionalized ultrasmall (<4 nm) gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stably anchored with a single amphiphilic triblock copolymer chain per NP. Directed NP self-assembly in aqueous solution can be facilely accomplished to afford organic/inorganic hybrid micelles, vesicles, rods, and large compound micelles by taking advantage of the rich microphase separation behavior of the as-synthesized AuNP hybrid amphiphilic triblock copolymers, PEO-AuNP-PS, which act as the polymer metal polymer analogue of conventional amphiphilic triblock copolymers. Factors affecting the size-selective fabrication and self-assembly characteristics and the time-dependent morphological evolution of NP assemblies were thoroughly explored.

Abstract:We describe a synthesis of Au wavy nanowires in an aqueous solution in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The resultant Au nanowires automatically separated from the solution and floated at the air/water interface. We investigated the formation mechanism by characterizing the samples obtained at different stages of the synthesis. Both particle attachment and cold welding were found to be involved in the formation of such nanowires. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis, the CTAB molecules adsorbed on the surface of a Au nanostructure went through a change in structure from a bilayer to a monolayer, converting the Au surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. As a result, the Au wavy nanowires were driven to the air/water interface during the synthesis. This growth mechanism is potentially extendable to many other systems involving small surfactant molecules.

Abstract:A variety of metallic nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution have been synthesized in a facile one-phase method in which amine-borane complexes are applied as reducing agents. It is particularly striking that large colloidal crystals with sizes up to tens of micrometers can directly form from the reaction mixtures without any further treatment. By using the synthetic route described, large-scale syntheses of both mono- and alloyed metallic nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution can be easily achieved.

Abstract:A facile one-pot method has been developed to synthesize uniform gold@mesoporous silica nanospheres (Au@MSNs), which have a well-defined core-shell structure with ordered mesoporous silica as a shell. The resulting Au@MSNs have a high surface area (∼521 m2/g) and uniform pore size (∼2.5 nm) for the mesoporous silica shell. The diameter of the gold core can be regulated by adjusting the amount of HAuCl4. The catalytic performance of the Au@MSNs was investigated using the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction. The mesopores of the silica shells provide direct access for the reactant molecules to diffuse and subsequently interact with the gold cores. In addition, the Au@MSNs display the great advantage of sintering-resistance to 950 °C because the mesoporous silica shells inhibit aggregation or deformation of the gold cores. The high thermal stability enables the Au@MSNs to be employed in high-temperature catalytic reactions.

Abstract:We report a facile, green, and high yielding approach for the synthesis and stabilization of relatively monodisperse gold nanoparticles using typical nonionic biosurfactant ethoxylated sterol (BPS-30). The obtained gold nanoparticles capped by BPS-30 not only showed remarkable stability after several months of storage under ambient conditions, but also exhibited exciting stability in high concentrations of electrolyte aqueous solutions such as acid, base, salt, and even physiological phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory was introduced to interpret the relationship between the capping mechanism and the excellent stability of the nanoparticles. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the yield of the gold nanoparticles. Moreover, the catalytic efficiency of the gold nanoparticles was evaluated by using the reduction of 4-nitroaniline by potassium borohydride in aqueous solution.

Abstract:Shape-controlled gold nanostructures were successfully synthesized in an aqueous solution by a one-step, non-templated thermal reduction method through heating of a poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/HAuCl4 aqueous solution. Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) serves. as both the stabilizing surfactant and reducing agent for the controlled synthesis of gold nanostructures with different shapes. Upon adjusting the chain-length and the concentration of the PVP, decahedral, icosahedral and platelike gold nanostructures with dominating distribution were fabricated, respectively, with the ratio of terminating OH groups at the polymer to Au ions as an important experimental parameter. The results suggest that the morphology of the gold nanostructures could be tuned by this method. The successful preparation of gold nanostructures exemplifies a very facile, effective, and generic strategy for fabrication of gold nanoparticles with various shapes.
